4 out of 5 stars Great read with a few cheesey lines.......2006-03-28

Overfal is my first David Dun and it was a fast-paced thrill ride. Sam Wintripp rescues actress Anna Wade as she is running from corporate crazies who have altered her brother's mental stability.
Thus lies a tale with some cheesey dialog, scenes that are totally unrealistic - and a great plot that will keep the reader going.
There are some scenes that I simply couldn't hold back the laughter, but the writing is so good - and the plot interesting enough - that it kept me hooked. Dun gets a little long winded with explanations of overfals and brain activity (those parts I tended to skim), but I liked this book enough to want to read more. And, like the female I am, I hope Sam Wintripp finds a woman to give him the balanced harmony his Indian mother says he lacks.

1 out of 5 stars readable but not good enough to be great.......2005-11-12

75% of this book wrote very well, 25% a bit randomly messy and overdone. some parts of this book should be deleted to avoid of not reading as an independent book but part of the 'sam' series. those parts read quite wordy and almost killed the tempo and smoothness. i have to leapfrog and flip thru those pages to get the connection and kept my focus. guess maybe dunn should do something as today's dvd version of a movie with 'deleted scenes' provided. this flaw could be improved if dunn got a better and more courageous editor who could advise the author where should be boldly omitted. if 480 pages in total could be reduced to 400 pages, this book might deserve a very high or even the highest rating. if every book follwing up the precedent one that would force the reader to repetitively read some extra pages about the books before it, it's obviously an unnecessary burden to all the parties involved albeit more paper wastes. the other thing i've found out during reading was that sometimes, the dialogues were a bit confusing, you couldn't clearly distinguish or identify who said what or which part of the dialogues. the final part was extremely messy and rush.

3 out of 5 stars OVERFALL KNOCKED ME OVER!!!.......2005-11-11

This is the 3rd book I've read by DD. Sam Wintripp started out being a big hero in my eyes but after he met Anna, he seemed to turn into a wuss.

It bothered me that when Sam lost a trusted ally (his dog, Shoshei, Aussie, and a few other buddies, there was very little regret on his part. At least, the book went right on. The premise was a sick one, (changing DNA to breed Raging Soldiers, etc.) but I read on.

It took me a longer to read this book than it did Diana Gabaldon's 992 page tome. It just didnt 'hook' me into the plights of the hero and heroine, but I finished it anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Fast Moving!.......2003-06-17

Give this one a try if you like thrillers. It's a go fast book about an unlikely duo, Sam and Anna trying to solve an unlikely problem. You do have to suspend belief a little bit now and then but that's what these books are for. The writing is pretty fair and the fresh plot ideas are good. The way Dun puts the book together keeps you guessing and keeps you reading. In this book that bad guys are a real trip and a story unto themselves. If you want high brow fiction don't read it. If you want a traditional mystery don't read it. Otherwise you'll find that you're glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars loads of intrigue and action.......2003-06-17

Boy meets girl in the middle of an exciting rescue that is probably one of the best passages in the book. I had never heard an Overfall before I read the book. There is loads of intrigue and action when Sam and Anna set off to figure out what kind of a mental cloud has come over her brother and how it is that he seems to have fallen under the influence of his corporate handlers. Jason Anna's brother is a brilliant mathematician with some mental quirks. The book gets a little high tech in explaining the brain stuff but aside from that is a cool roller coaster ride. You can't go wrong for seven bucks.

All the world’s wisdom and magic resides within the iridescent depths of a small white pearl. “All my sorcery,” the Ancient Ravenna had said of the pearl. “It is left to you to save the world.” But is the pearl powerful enough to enable Aeriel to defeat the White Witch? Aeriel’s people have assembled an army--led by the redeemed darkangel Irrylath--and are soon to attack the Witch and her darkangel sons. But their cause is hopeless unless Aeriel can unlock the mysteries of the pearl . . . and of her own destiny.

I believe that Pierce's writing has a very aesthetic quality to it that very few writers can pull off. The ending was very depressing to me because it felt like the character just has to keep making sacrifices over and over again; she has a second of happiness and then is left feeling numb. Not to say that the exploration of Aerial's feeling and the details of her journey are not important, I just wished it ended a little differently because I am a romantic, optimist, and idealist. I also would have liked to know what Irrylath was thinking, and feeling the whole time. After thoroughly enjoying the books, I feel that it could have been even better if we could see, hear, feel what he was feeling. My curiosity to know has tempted me to try and create Irrylath's Point of view myself. I think he's a really great character and if Miss Pierce ever reads this, I would love to ask her to let us take a glimpse of Irrylath's mind.

The third book in the Darkangel trilogy is a bit of an improvement. More is discovered about the planet and the background of some of the major players running around the place.

Aeriel and others must decide what to do when it seems that some very serious sacrifice may be required to keep everything going.

5 out of 5 stars A great end of a series that is not just for kids.......2006-06-19

The last book in the darkangel trilogy is regrettably short but does a great job of tying together all of the lose ends of the series. In this book the white witch's origins are reveled, the world and the mysteriouse amcient creators are finally explained and of course, the battle is joined with the darkangels.

There are many twists and turns to this book. You will be surprised, and a little shocked, to learn all of what happens in this book.

I loved this book as a kid and was surprised to discover that it translates very well as an adult fantasy novel. This is really the kind of book that is classified as young adult only because there's no sex or swearing.

                    Five stars.

5 out of 5 stars "Ravenna's Own Daughter Shall Kindle the Crown...".......2006-02-10

As the last installment of the "Darkangel" trilogy, "The Pearl of the Soul of the World" had a lot to live up to, as well as a lot to wrap up. In the first book "The Darkangel," slave-girl Aerial saved the darkangel Irrylath from the misery of his own existence under the power of the White Witch and returned him to his mother's house. In "A Gathering of Gargoyles" she undertook another task, in searching for the lost lons to fight against the White Witch in the coming battle and in doing so discovered her own extraordinary heritage. Now the various countries of Aerial's world have gathered together in a great army to march against the witch, with her husband Irrylath at its head.

But the story begins in the most unexpected way. As the story opens, we find a young woman in a cave deep underground, with no memory of who she is, mute, with a silver pin driven through her temple and a sinister feeling that someone is following her. Although the "amnesia" plot device may seem cliched to some, Pierce uses it brilliantly by instigating it right from the beginning, so that the girl's identity and the events that led up to her awakening in the cave are kept shrouded until the time is right (and as it turns out, her forgetfulness plays an important role in the narrative; it's not just a silly plot twist and it's *not* brought on by a bump on the head).

Found by three duaroughs (beardless dwarfs basically), the young girl accompanies them through tunnels and caverns, all the time endangered by the presence of the witch's evil creatures. Eventually the girl finds a hidden passage to the ancient city of Crystalglass where the last of the Ancients - Ravenna - awaits reveal to her the truth of the White Witch and the world's history and to give her a final task: deliver a (literal!) pearl of wisdom into the Witch's own hand.

The girl (as you've probably guessed) is indeed Aerial, and when she meets Ravenna her memories return to her. We learn what happened in the space between "A Gathering of Gargoyles" and the time she found herself in the underground caves, (including the gathering of Irrylath's army, the rebirth of Avarclon, the equine lon that died in the first book, and Aerial's newfound reputation as a powerful sorceress). Most importantly of all is the dynamics between herself, her devoted servant Erin, her detached husband Irrylath and his cousin Sabr. Pierce excellently and poignantly weaves the bonds that tie these people together; Aerial's hopeless love for Irrylath, his seeming indifference toward her, Erin's devotion to Aerial and her scorn for Irrylath, and Sabr's sneaky innuendoes to discredit Aerial and snatch Irrylath for herself. It's certainly a tangled web of intrigue!

As well as these core characters Pierce also keeps good track of the rest of her (by this stage, rather large) cast of characters, all of whom have an interesting and vital part to play in the progression of the story. As such, we have reappearances from Talb, Syllva, Eoduin and the maidens, the Ma'a-mbai, the lons, Irrylath's brothers and Roshka. Only Roshka was a tad underused - as Aerial's newly-discovered brother I would have liked to have seen more of the bond between siblings. Pierce's gift is that none of her characters are strictly good or evil, and just as Aerial must cope with her jealously of Sabr and the pain she feels in regard to Irrylath; Sabr herself is not wholly bad, acting as she does out of love for Irrylath. And as for the White Witch...well, I don't want to give her story away, but let's just say she is given a name, a heritage and a heartbreaking motivation for the evils she does during the course of the story. Just as a darkangel was once redeemed, so too is there hope for the Witch...if she chooses to take it.

Pierce creates a vivid portrayal of a world; which is hinted at being our own terraformed moon set far into the future. However, no fantasy fan should be put off by the vague allusions toward science-fiction (such as archaic machinery and burning "chariots" that transport the Ancients from planet to planet), as this trilogy is fantasy at its core. However, ideas that Pierce brings into the narrative, such as the reasons behind why the moon was terraformed in the first place and the ultimate fate of `Oceanus', should resonant in the readers' minds as contemporary statements of our world's present condition.

And then of course there's the ending, and as one can see browsing over the other reviews most were quite disappointed. However, in my opinion there was no other possible way for the story to finish. Pierce carefully laid out the elements of the story, and the conclusion makes sense given the facts that she had established. The ending thus takes on a tragic, inevitable and fateful air, reminiscent of all the best love stories. Though saddened, I could understand why things happened the way they did.

                    BUT!

For all those who were upset at the conclusion, hope remains. In an interview Meredith Ann Pierce had this to say:

"Anybody who considers that a satisfying ending is nuts. Take heart! I intend to shift focus to Irrylath and show him as a very human character coming to grips with a life of duty, devoid of personal satisfaction or love. No longer overshadowed by Aerial, Irrylath must forgive himself for his crimes as a darkangel, regain his wings and discover the secret that will set both him and Aerial free. Aerial will learn the high personal cost of surrendering herself, however nobly, to Ravenna's planetary rescue plan."

"Here end for a time the adventures of Aerial. The adventures of Irrylath have only begun" - this was the line that Pierce wanted to end "The Pearl of the Soul of the World" with until her publishers vetoed the decision. Now that we have hope for Irrylath and Aerial, all we can do is wait impatiently. Until then, "The Darkangel" trilogy is a fantastic set of books.

One of those hybrid sort of books. Throw in fantasy, horror, and a bit of SF, and see what you get. Something like a little of the later Tepper, perhaps. Slightly phantasmagorical, or something like that.

Anyway, I didn't find it too compelling, and struggled through the maid's quest for her boss who has been taken by the Darkangel vampire guy.

The first one was the best, in my opinion.

4 out of 5 stars The books that got me hooked on Fantasy.......2007-07-20

I read this trilogy when I was 13 in the mid eighties and I loved it. Just loved it. I could easily picture the desert, the dark castle, the dead virgins and Irrylath - oh, Irrylath - the vampire. I was completely in love with this character. So perhaps one has to be a teenager to fully appreciate this trilogy.

This series will for ever hold a special place in my heart and though I don't appreciate the ending (hence only 4 stars) it is most definitely worth a read.

If Meredith Ann Pierce ever comes to her senses and writes a sequel I will be the first one to buy it!!

                    5 out of 5 stars A wonderful trilogy........2007-05-02

I read this trilogy in high school, and after 5 years, I discovered it again amongst the long list of books I've read over the years. It's rare when a book series actually sends a stab of nostalgia and the overwhelming desire to read it again through me, but this is one of few series that does so.

This series is well written and completely absorbing, which is as expected from Ms Pierce. I read this series and I will be completely oblivious to the world for hours.

The creativity of her environments, the fantastic creatures, the societies and peoples, the memories and backstories of her characters are all so in depth that when one reads the story they feel as though they are an invisible character that is never mentioned, but always there- you feel as though you are there- in fact, I often was quite startled when Iw as interrupted in my reading of them- I was so entranced and absorbed by the books I forgot I was in my room.

If you're looking for a series to tide you over until the Last Harry potter book comes out, this is definitely the one to get- you will NOT be disappointed.

Aeriel's love has broken the curse on the darkangel Irrylath, making him human again and freeing him from the control of his mother, the dreaded White Witch. But the Witch is far from defeated. Her wicked plans require all seven of her vampyre sons, and she will not give one up so easily. There is but a single hope for the Witch's defeat--solving an ancient, mysterious riddle. So Aeriel sets off to solve the riddle, sailing across a sea of dust and straight into the worst of the Witch's terrors. The second in Pierce's Darkangel Trilogy. The protagonist of the piece has made nice with the vampire guy, and wants to do the darkangel mambo with him, as well, basically.

There is still more odd questing to be undergone to find other things, as this young woman has to walk the line between the whole human and vampire thing in this odd and precarious setting.

Gosh. The darkangel was one of my all time faves.
I didnt realise she'd written more, and I wish she hadnt.
I havent read the 3rd yet, but hope it improves.
There was too much action and magic and too many characters, everything was spread too thinly. This book wasnt written from the heart- sorry M.A.P -but thanks for the 1st, THE DARKANGEL! Which gets 5 stars. This book was just terrible. Its all over the place. I just cant get over it.

4 out of 5 stars Some problems, still a very good book, and still not for kids.......2006-06-18

In this second book of the darkangel trilogy we run into some problems. The main one is that Aerial, our darkangel saving slave heroine of the first book, has become impossibly perfect. The second is that although this book has an incredible amount of action and chase scenes and scary things, it drags in places. The third is that this book involves journeying over much of Aerial's world, but there is no map. Very frustrating.

Other that though, in this book Aerial (who fell in love with her now non-darkangel husband very quickly and somewhat inexplicably) journeys the world to find magical mounts, the guardians or lons of the world, for her husband's younger brothers. She learns more of the prophecy of the darkangel and of her own destiny and heritage.

All in all, not a bad book for the middle of a trilogy, which can always be an awkward novel in any series. I still maintain this series is not truly intended for, and is not just a book for young adults. I'm enjoying it much more in this second read at age 18 then I did at age 12. Having forgotten what happens in the third book since I read it six years ago I happily go on to see the conclusion to the great fight against the evil white Lorelei and her remaining six darkangel sons.

                    Four stars.

Ms. pierce has created a world that is so vivid and enchanting you wish never to leave. If you've never read fantasy before or are a younger reader this trillogy will capture your heart as well as that special place deep inside you called your imagination.

5 out of 5 stars Steeds for the Secondborn.......2004-07-28

Very amazing till the end of the book. You can start guessing from the first but after you get the last chapter, you'll have your reward nicely.

Aeriel's journey continued after saving the halfmade "Darkangel" and change him back into a mortal Prince Irrylath. Their return to Easterness (Isterness) was greeted by the prince's mother, Lady Syllva and his secondborn brothers. Engulfed by his past sins, Irrylath kept distance with his "Darkangel" fourteenth wife despite of Aeriel's effort.

Such a heartwrenching situation despaire her. But her task was not over yet. With the help of the other 13 angel brides, she got the second of the three of The Lady Ravenna's stanzas and set of to fulfill the prophecy. Her main quest was to find the lost lons before the Withe Witch found them.

Will she succeed? Can she cross the distance between her and Irrylath?
