Book Description

Long considered a classic in Bolivia, Juan de la Rosa tells the story of a young boy's coming of age during the violent and tumultuous years of Bolivia's struggle for independence. Indeed, in this remarkable novel, Juan's search for his personal identity functions as an allegory of Bolivia's search for its identity as a nation. Set in the early 1800s, this remarkable novel is narrated by one of the last surviving Bolivian rebels, octogenarian Juan de la Rosa. Juan recreates his childhood in the rebellious town of Cochabamba, and with it a large cast of full bodied, Dickensian characters both heroic and malevolent. The larger cultural dislocations brought about by Bolivia's political upheaval are echoed in those experienced by Juan, whose mother's untimely death sets off a chain of unpredictable events that propel him into the fiery crucible of the South American Independence Movement. Outraged by Juan's outspokenness against Spanish rule and his awakening political consciousness, his loyalist guardians banish him to the countryside, where he witnesses firsthand the Spaniards' violent repression and rebels' valiant resistance that crystallize both his personal destiny and that of his country. In Sergio Gabriel Waisman's fluid translation, English readers have access to Juan de la Rosa for the very first time.

5 out of 5 stars Great historical novel.......1999-04-05

Juan de la Rosa takes us to the 19th century in Latin America (Bolivia) and shows us how a people fought for its freedom. The novel mixes real facts with fiction; through its rich landscape and character descriptions, it transports us in time and space. We become sympathetic to little orphan Juan's suffering while growing up with unfriendly people, and his struggle to escape from opression. Through Juan's struggles we also see a whole people's fight for independence. There is a paralell maturing of Juan with the Bolivian independence movement. A high point in the novel is the battle between women and children on one side, armed with sticks and led by a blind woman, and the well-armed and cruel Spanish army on the other side. The novel is very effective in depicting the major players and crucial events in the independence movement. The development of Juan's particular story against the backdrop of the independence movement is really moving. While we become engaged in the historical developments we never lose sight of the personal struggles of the main character, including his search to find out his own identity. Higly recommended reading.

He commits his memories to paper in order to pass on that uniquely personal understanding of the past "with which serious historians never busy themselves." Juan recreates his childhood in the rebellious town of Cochabamba, and with it a large cast of full-bodied, Dickensian characters both heroic and malevolent, from Juan's wise and self-sacrificing tutor, Brother Justo, to the ruthless colonial general Goyeneche. Few novels combine historical scholarship, operatic drama, comic detail, and political fervor so seamlessly. In Sergio Gabriel Waisman's fluid translation, English readers have access to Juan de la Rosa for the very first time.

        5 out of 5 stars Caleb's the man!.......2007-08-08

Before reading this story I had never paid much attention to Caleb. Now I don't know how I ever overlooked him. His faithfulness to God truly is encouraging to the reader. I wish the book had been longer, I didn't want to stop reading about him!

5 out of 5 stars Caleb, the greatest of the Jews........2006-10-27

THE WARRIOR by Francine Rivers is the second of a five part series. I was a little disappointed with the first book in the series, The Priest, but volumes 2 and 3 (yes, I read them out of order) have been extraordinary and a welcome return to what I've come to expect from this very gifted writer. This one follows the story of Caleb, the half-breed from the tribe of Judah who, after the death of Moses, would become not only the greatest warrior of the twelve tribes of Israel, but I believe also God's most dedicated servant of a generation.

Caleb undoubtedly possessed the most unwavering faith among the Jews and this book closely chronicles his struggle, not just with his own sin, but with his inability to sway the people who, over and over, so quickly turned away from their Almighty deliverer. Caleb spent his life, when not destroying the idol-worshippers which infested the promised land, desperately reminding the people of God's grace upon them. Caleb's was a life surely mired in frustration as he watched not one, not even two, but three generations turn away from the Lord God.

Though Joshua is so often the one remembered of the generation of Jews delivered into the land, it was Caleb who was the strength of the people, often standing alone on the side of God. And though even his twelve sons would disappoint Caleb, near the end of his life it would be his one daughter who would give him hope for the future of the Jews.

Once again, Francine Rivers takes the reader through the stories of the Bible in intricate detail, adding narrative, but never venturing from the details.

        5 out of 5 stars Spectacular Storytelling.......2006-07-07

The Warrior by Francine Rivers continues her biblical men of faith series--Sons of Encouragement. I have read all Francine Rivers' books and have never been disappointed. I was delighted to learn "The Last Sin Eater" is in feature-length film production.

The hero of our current story is Caleb, warrior of God. The first paragraph--"Run!"--hooked me and I reluctantly inserted my bookmark when other duties called. Kelubai's--Caleb's given name--belief in God begins when in the throes of one of the disasters rained down on Egypt because Pharaoh wouldn't let God's people go. "The God of the Hebrews could turn water to blood and call forth frogs... Here was a God he could worship." He runs to the Hebrews, led by Moses, and asks for acceptance for him and his family to exit Egypt with them. But the Hebrews, just beginning on their journey into the desert, look down their nose at him and tell him no, since he is but a half-breed and descended from the lineage of Esau. When asked his name and he replies, "Kelubai," they jeer and call him Caleb -- dog. Not taking "no" for an answer, he and his family tag along on the fringe of the huge exodus. Finally accepting the name Caleb, his love for God and following His commandments eventually earn him a standing in the community.

When the Jews reach the Jordan River, Caleb is chosen to represent the tribe of Judah to spy out the land with a member of each of the other eleven tribes. Also among the twelve is his young friend, Joshua. For forty days the spies surreptitously inspect the land of Canaan and its people. When returning, they all say how wonderful and fertile the land is; the magnificent crops--some of which they've carried back as witness to the rich fertileness of the land. But ten say the people are too big, too well defended and there is no way they can take the land from them. Caleb and Joshua, however, say God has given them this land; they must fight for it and drive out the Canaanites. They must obey God. But the people don't listen and God returns them to the desert to wander for almost forty years because of their unbelief, disobedience, and complaining. The only two of the current adult generation who will be allowed into Canaan are Caleb and Joshua--the entire adult population dies during the forty years of wandering in the desert.

Francine Rivers has penned a marvelous and poignant story of one man's desire to be all that he can be for God. She's taken the scriptures and brought them alive. And she's done it beautifully. One can't miss the parallels of our own lives and Caleb's, nor God's call to respond to Him as Caleb did. Absolute obedience, no matter the cost.

2 out of 5 stars Too preachy, too perfect.......2006-06-13

The first book by Rivers that I read was Redeeming Love, and I loved it. I haven't found another of hers that I liked as well, yet I keep trying. For this story, the potential is there to weave the story and engage her readers. Yet there are a few bumps that interrupt this.

Caleb was too perfect. He didn't seem like he ever did anything wrong - except to defy his family and move in with the Israelites (which turns out was the right thing to do). He was seen as more holy and influential than Moses or Aaron. Caleb was always right, and telling others that he was right. He was a Gary Stu. It got a bit tedious for my taste. Rivers seemed to use her Caleb character to preach through him. I'd rather see the characters do Godly things than hear them say Godly things.

There were some fine parts to the story and some interesting things to think about. But this wasn't a page turner or a great work of literature. If you want a light quick story about a Biblical character and you don't mind being preached at, then you'll probably love this.

        5 out of 5 stars refreshing.......2006-03-17

The book was a very good book. If you forget how GOD was is awesome read this book and it will remind you and it helped my faith also. Its wasnt just a book to me it helped me with things that i have had trouble with. It was a great book. I love anything of Francine Rivers though.

It is a great read and my nephew and niece loved reading it.

5 out of 5 stars What a great idea. .......2005-09-29

This has to be one of the most refreshing ideas/stories I have read in all my years. The way the writer shows Thor's progression to worthiness, and his undying sense of adventures, is masterfully handled. Though the art/coloring is a bit spoltchy in parts, I think this is an absolutely great take on an unexplored and oft wondered part of the life of Thor, and his closest friends. To thee I say bravo.

The year is 1895 and young Nathan Williams wants nothing more than to be a "storm warrior," one of the brave men of the U.S. Lifesaving Service on Pea Island, off the North Carolina shore. Again and again, Nathan has helped the team rescue frightened sailors from floundering ships during the winter storm season. But Nathan's father is a fisherman, and he expects Nathan to be the same. After all, Pea Island is the single station open to African American surfmen, and the precious few jobs are passed from father to son. Still, Nathan is coached in lifesaving skills by the Pea Island crew and dares to hope that one day he may share in their ranks. But after helping with a particularly difficult rescue, Nathan is forced to face the truth: "In that moment I knew, without a shred of doubt, that I did not have the courage to risk my life that way. The dream, and all the months of hoping, blew away as quickly as the foam off the waves." After a close friend makes clear the obvious, Nathan realizes that there are other ways to save lives and discovers his true destiny.

With Storm Warriors, Elisa Carbone has illuminated a fascinating corner of history that is both exciting and meaningful. The novel, based on real people and actual shipwrecks, will be devoured by fans of true adventure stories such as Jon Krakauer's Into the Wild and Jennifer Armstrong's Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World. (Ages 11 and older) --Jennifer Hubert

          Book Description

Driven from his home by the Ku Klux Klan and still reeling from the death of his mother, Nathan moves with his father and grandfather to the desolate Pea Island on the Outer Banks of North Carolina to start a new life. Fortunately, life on Pea Island at the end of the 19th century is far from quiet.  The other island residents include the surfmen--the African American crew of the nearby U.S. Life-Saving Station--and soon Nathan is lending an extra hand to these men as they rescue sailors from sinking ships. Working and learning alongside the courageous surfmen, Nathan begins to dream of becoming one himself. But the reality of post-Civil War racism starts to show itself as he gradually realizes the futility of his dream. And then another dream begins to take shape, one that Nathan refuses to let anyone take from him.

I totally disagree with the two reviews below! This was a wonderful book detailing an amazing part of history. The characters were well developed and the storyline was gripping. I felt connected to all of the characters in this book and I loved the fact that the story was historically accurate. I thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to end and I will definitly look for other books written by this author. Her writing is refreshing.

          1 out of 5 stars Storm Warriors.......2005-10-31

The waves crashed up on the shore. We were the last hope for the boat stranded out in the waves. Storm Warriors is about a young boy who is growing up when there is much discrimination. He hopes to grow up to be a surfman, a person who is part of the all black Pea Island Life-Saving Station. He is repeatedly told by his father and others that he will never be able to achieve his dream. He borrows some medical books from one of the surfman and learns all that he can, memorizing every page. One day he is ordered to help treat a man who has frostbite and succeeds, saving the man's life. This is how he gets what he wants, but in a different way than he expects. This book was not very good because of the vocabulary and detail that was used.
The way this book was written makes it sound as if it were written by a caveman. Examples like "powerful good" or "powerful hungry" show the author does not know how to use those words. They make it very confusing to read, even though you know what he means. You sometimes have to read several of these sections over two or three times to comprehend.
This book also does not display emotions very well. It sometimes just says "I was mad" or "It made me happy" and those are not very descriptive words and could be changed. The author did not tie in the boy's emotions and just states the obvious. It makes it like you are talking to a two year old.
The way that the author makes the child behave doesn't really make sense. If he was a ten year old boy then why did they make him work with the injured? How many kids ten years old would not react at all to a man whose arm has a piece of wood sticking through it and has a concussion? The child would not have reacted this way in real life so the way that he was described in the book is very unrealistic.
This is a very bad book and you should not read it. If you can read bad language easily and comprehend it, then this book might be acceptable. It's principle was good and it might have originally been a good book, but the way it was written was not very good.

          ISBN 0-440-41879-8

The surfman motto: "You have to go out, but you don't have to come back."

Storm Warriors is about a kid Nathan who lives in Roanoke Island. One day he wants to become a surfman so he can row out in a boat with five other rowers and save sailors during a storm. This all takes place after the Civil War. It's a non-fiction book.
I found the book to be an okay book. It grabbed your attention most of the time but it didn't really seem all too interesting. The time that it'd grab your attention would be at the end of the chapter. It'd make you wonder what's going to happen next. The whole surfman thing was pretty cool. I'd never heard of surfmen before until I read this book. It was also a very short easy book though. It was only 158 pages long. It was in big letters and it was double spaced so it was short. I find short books like that to be boring because there weren't enough details. I recommend this book to people in like sixth grade. If you're older then in sixth grade and have a really slow reading level then this would be for you. Or if you like the sea and adventuress boat saving stories then you'd like this.

          4 out of 5 stars Historical Fiction.......2003-11-14

This is an interesting book because it is about an unfamiliar subject and time in history. Readers will learn a lot about the "surfmen" who rescue crews of crashed ships as they follow the story of Nathan, a boy who wants to someday be a part of it all. I purchased the book because it is nominated for the Rebecca Caudill Award this year, but I have yet to read it with or to any students. Due to some images and language I would recommend it for students older than 5th grade. As a read-aloud, it could be thoroughly discussed, which would be necessary for understanding for middle school children.

4 out of 5 stars Informative and a good story.......2002-09-11

In the world of 1895, Nathan, a young Negro boy, dreams of becoming one of the black surfmen on Pea Island, saving the lives of sailors and passengers shipwrecked off the coast of North Carolina. When his father tells him the odds are against him, Nathan believes the problem is racism. However, in his first summer on the island, he learns there are other hindrances, and perhaps other dreams.

This book, inspired by real life characters, tells a part of American history many of us have never seen or heard. The men of the life-saving stations, both black and white, were brave and true to their professions. It's a good read for young and old.

The only thing that did not quite ring true was the language of the characters. Most spoke near perfect English and given their times and their backgrounds, there should have been at least a hint of a lack of education, perhaps even of their southernness.

Elisa Carbone has created a good read, a story for anyone interested in the dangerous North Carolina coast, American history in the late 19th century, or in the dreams of the young.

                  Book Description

The Liber Manualis is a guidebook to conduct and survival in tumultuous times written by a Carolingian mother for her adolescent son. This edition provides the only complete translation in English, accompanied by the Latin original. The introduction places her handbook within the context of French and Germanic literary traditions, while explanatory references illuminate the life and work of a remarkable ninth-century woman, and place the text squarely within its contemporary social, feminist and religious contexts.
