In the world of contemporary travel writing, Bill Bryson, the bestselling author of A Walk in the Woods, often emerges as a major contender for King of Crankiness. Granted, he complains well and humorously, but between every line of his travel books you can almost hear the tinny echo: "I wanna go home, I miss my wife."
Happily, I'm a Stranger Here Myself unleashes a new Bryson, more contemplative and less likely to toss daggers. After two decades in England, he's relocated to Hanover, New Hampshire. In this collection (drawn from dispatches for London's Night & Day magazine), he's writing from home, in close proximity to wife and family. We find a happy marriage between humor and reflection as he assesses life both in New England and in the contemporary United States. With the telescopic perspective of one who's stepped out of the American mainstream and come back after 20 years, Bryson aptly holds the mirror up to U.S. culture, capturing its absurdities--such as hotlines for dental floss, the cult of the lawsuit, and strange American injuries such as those sustained from pillows and beds. "In the time it takes you to read this," he writes, "four of my fellow citizens will somehow manage to be wounded by their bedding."
The book also reflects the sweet side of small-town USA, with columns about post-office parties, dining at diners, and Thanksgiving--when the only goal is to "get your stomach into the approximate shape of a beach ball" and be grateful. And grateful we are that the previously peripatetic Bryson has returned to the U.S., turning his eye to this land--while living at home and near his wife. Under her benevolent influence, he entertains through thoughtful insights, not sarcastic stabs. --Melissa Rossi
Book Description
After living in Britain for two decades, Bill Bryson recently moved back to the United States with his English wife and four children (he had read somewhere that nearly 3 million Americans believed they had been abducted by aliens--as he later put it, "it was clear my people needed me"). They were greeted by a new and improved America that boasts microwave pancakes, twenty-four-hour dental-floss hotlines, and the staunch conviction that ice is not a luxury item.
Delivering the brilliant comic musings that are a Bryson hallmark,
I'm a Stranger Here Myself recounts his sometimes disconcerting reunion with the land of his birth. The result is a book filled with hysterical scenes of one man's attempt to reacquaint himself with his own country, but it is also an extended if at times bemused love letter to the homeland he has returned to after twenty years away.

Not my favorite author in this genre.......2007-07-22
I read through about the first third of this offering by Bill Bryson and found I simply could not get into it. Written in the spirit of Dave Barry, Mary Roach and maybe Erma Bombeck, it is intended to draw humor from the little idiosyncrasies of daily American life as seen by an expatriot returned from years in the U.K.
Where I find Dave Barry's turns of phrase highly amusing I tend to find Bill's commentary more rankling. Each article highlights some aspect of American life that I find less than satisfying and the commentary, though trying to be amusing, simply comes off as frustrating.
Funny and thoughtful about the US and Britain........2007-07-03
This book has a charming premise. Bryson is an American writer who lived in Britain for over twenty years, marrying an Englishwoman and raising two children. He moved back to the States with his family, where he wrote a series of essays about America for a British audience.
Bryson is a keen and witty observer of life. How many of us could write an entire essay prompted by the existence of a 24-hour help line on a dental floss dispenser? The essays are uniformly amusing, sometimes side-splitting.
Thought not as consistently funny as Dave Barry, Bryson goes further by adding a healthy dose of thoughtfulness to it all. Throughout the book he ponders what it means to be American, comparing and contrasting it with what it means to British. Every so often the question of Canadianness pops in as well. As countries divided by a common language, they provide a nice playground for Bryson, and he has a good time with them.
The sheer silliness of being American.......2007-06-03
Laugh-out-loud hilarious. Bryson's observations about American society and its absurdities rings so true and the author is the perfect vehicle for showcasing these stories. He is just so lovable in his books. His absentmindedness and his sharp wit both serve him extremely well. While poking fun at others, he also pokes fun at himself. His work is just priceless.
One funny little story after another.......2007-06-01
In this book, Bill Bryson presents a compilation of weekly columns he had published upon his return from England to the States, after being away for 20 years. And boy did he had a cultural shock! He presents in a VERY funny way the things that we take for granted every day and, one by one, dissects the very elements that make up the American way of life in an insightful way.
The book is assembled in a chapter fashion with a certain structure that connects them whenever applicable. The chapters are short and self-contained enough to turn the book into an endless feed of amazing 5-minute fun reads before bedtime or while you are sitting in a waiting room.
My favourite author.......2007-05-30
Bill Bryson has to be one of the 'most readable' authors for folk who prefer a good chuckle. My wife is not so happy and moans about my giggling keeping her awake.
Keep up the good work Bill
Book Description
Notes from a Small Island
After nearly two decades in Britain, Bill Bryson decided to move his wife and kids back to his homeland of the United States. But not before taking one last trip around Britain, a sort of valedictory tour of the green and kindly island that had so long been his home. The result is a hilarious social commentary that conveys the true glory of Britain.
Neither Here nor There
Thirty years after backpacking across Europe, Bill Bryson decides to retrace the journey he undertook in the halcyon days of his youth–carrying with him a bag of maps, old clothes…and a stinging wit honed to razor sharpness by two decades of adult experience.
I’m a Stranger Here Myself
Bill Bryson read “somewhere” that nearly three million Americans believed they had been abducted by aliens–clearly the Americans needed Bill back. So after years raising his family in Britain with his English wife, the brood moves to the United States, and leaves Bill to chronicle the quirkiest aspects of life in America as he reveals his own rules for life.

Great stories - when you can hear it..............2007-07-05
I purchased the audio book to listen to on a long car trip. The reading by the author is great, however the quality of the recording is inconsistent. Mr. Bryson's natural intonation is fairly low to flat, but as his voice rose (occasionally) and fell (frequently) during his reading of the material, there was little to no effort by the post production team to modulate and equalize the volume - making the lower tones inaudiable. At one point I had the volume on my car stereo at maximum and was still missing words and parts of sentences, only to be almost blasted from my seat when a new chapter would start and the volume level rose precipitously. I own 2 other audio books by Mr. Bryson and did not have the same experience with those products.
Great Company.......2007-03-16
I have a small collection of Bill Bryson audio books and I enjoy them all immensely. The fact that they are read by the author, only increases the enjoyability. These stories are not only entertaining, but quite educational as well. Bill Bryson is a gifted writer who can really "bring you there", makes you want to visit the places he is in...and right now. I'm looking forward to expanding my collection. You won't be sorry with your purchase.

Ogden Nash (1902 - 1971) - Thanks for the Laughs! RIP.......2006-09-16
Ogden Nash
(American poet; born 1902; died 1971)
I love Ogden Nash perhaps because my father was such a devotee of Nash and was always eager to share his love of the author's humor by reading his poetry aloud to our family. Nash's pun-like rhymes, sometimes with words deliberately misspelled for comic effect.
Nash often wrote in an exaggerated verse form with pairs of lines that rhyme, but are of dissimilar length and irregular meter.
The Ant
by Ogden Nash
The ant has made himself illustrious
Through constant industry industrious.
So what?
Would you be calm and placid
If you were full of formic acid?
I was probably one of the few 6-year old kids in San Diego with any knowledge of the word formic acid.
This purchase facilitated the opportunity to relive pleasurable past experiences.

Light My Fire- Hillarious.......2007-08-24
I loved this one just as much as the other books in this series! I laughed out loud at the comedy scenes and can't wait for the next one.
Brilliant Fun!!.......2007-07-21
I adore Katie Macalister and this series. I'm a native New Yorker, and ride the subway to work every day. Even though the subway is overcrowded and there are usually some less than savory characters, my commute just flies by with Katie's books (the entire Aisling Grey series, as well as her other books, including her vampire series!). I am beyond excited when I find out she's written another book. Serious, deep literary stuff it is not, but if you're looking for a FUN read for travel, before bed, or to even give you some new ideas with your love life, buy her books. I'm so glad I did!!
Silly Fun Series.......2007-07-10
I love this series. It is definitely popcorn and chocolate not fine wine. That is what makes it so great. It is silly. It is very easy to read. The dog is a great side kick. He constantly makes me laugh. This book is fun to read. It is never a chore to read.
In this edition we learn a lot more about all of the characters. We especially get a final understanding about who or what Jim is as well as who Rene is.
My only complaint is that like her previous two novels, this one is just too short. Well not really but it leaves me begging and wishing for more. I can not wait for the next one to release. I always preorder this series well in advance from Amazon to ensure its prompt arrival on my door step.
I love the series.......2007-06-03
She will get you waiting for the next book. The only thing that make me mad is that Katie MacAlister only come out with one book a year in this series.
getting there...........2007-05-11
So this is book 3- I've read all three- in order- over the past few months. There is a lot I like about these books, I've enjoyed reading them, and look forward to more.
But- and you heard that coming- It's starting to feel like the story isn't really going anywhere. Don't get me wrong- there's action, and things keep adding in to the trials and tribulations- but it's becoming circular. It seems like Aisling hasn't made any progress, she's still just reacting to things- which is mentioned in the book. As frustrating as it is for the main character, it's becoming even more so for the reader.
Hopefully the next book in the lineup will get us going in the direction I'm hoping for, and we'll get to see more answers then questions.
Again- I enjoy them, I will read the next one, I just have high hopes.

Aisling Grey is a courier enjoying a free, work-related trip to Paris when she learns she's a Guardian. That's a keeper of the Gates of Hell, for those who don't know. She finds this out from Drake Vireo, who's scrumptiously sexy-at least in his human form. Now Drake has stolen the package Aisling was sent to deliver, and she must track him down, get the package, and try to resist the passion boiling inside her.

Excellent Read!.......2007-09-07
I really love Katie Macalister's books. Her heroines are not perfect Barbie dolls and the men are not all perfect alphas. I laughed out loud at several pages, I even had to put the book away because it was so funny. I was in public eating lunch.
Jim is my favorite sidekick. Remember that saying about a good friend bailing you out of jail, but a best friend will be with you in jail. That's Jim.
Can't wait for the next installment.
Super Reader.......2007-08-27
This is pretty lightweight stuff, meant to be so, I believe. Sort of somewhere between Men In Black and Midsomer Murders.
A clueless girl finds out she is a Guardian, basically supposed to keep watch over a portal to make sure not too many demons and monsters come through. She has a few super powers to help with that she starts to learn, including demon summoning, which means she has a big black demon dog to follow her around.
Seems it is tricky as she has a dragon she wants to shag, as well.
Stupid.......2007-08-05
These books slay me. How this sort of rubbish gets published I'll never know. AND why do I read them? I should have learnt from last time. **Sigh**
A Silly shallow story about Aisling Grey, a supposed Guardian who is a Wyvern's Mate. Of course not any Wyvern but the Leader of the Green Wyvern (Do Heroines EVER love the Janitor?) The Plot is thin at best and it kills me that trees died for this drivel. Very poor quality 4/10
the 4.5 reader rating is wrong.......2007-07-03
usually the reader ratings on amazon are dead on, but not this time. i am glad i checked this out at the library. i read the entire book, just because i hate not finishing a story. i was 2/3 in before the story picked up. don't understand how she could not know she was a guardian or find someone who was willing to teach her how to be a guardian, then all of a sudden she just knew how to access her magic. i did like the dog, had the best lines. i also liked how she didn't submitt to drake even though she was his mate. i have noticed that mate automaticly fall in love without know the person. i am going to read the next book in the series, maybe it gets better
Okay.......2007-06-23
I am a huge fan of the vampire books, but could not get into the guardian books at all. :(
Book Description
Aisling Grey is back-and in more trouble than ever. She thought being a courier would be easy. It's not. She thought being a Guardian would come naturally. It doesn't. She thought she could get out of being a wyvern's mate. She can't. And she never thought she'd be irresistible to men. But she is.

Hot Hot Hot.......2007-07-17
I loved it. Aisling Grey's relationship evolves with Drake but the passion stays red hot.
A Great Read.......2007-07-10
This one has a real mystery element to it. It is still the silly fun read you expect from Katie. Her books always leave me wanting more. They are easy to read. This one is no exception. Buy the whole series at once to make life easier.
Not a big fan.......2007-06-23
I am a huge fan of Katie MacAlister's vampire books, but just could not get into the guardian books at all.
Second installment in the series is a winner.......2007-05-10
Aisling, Drake, and Jim are all back, and Aisling is searching for a trainer for her Guardian duties. Romance, drama, and intrigue, as well as the hilarious troubles that Aisling creates by challenging Drake.
Laughed out loud..........2007-03-10
Oh my gosh, keep these coming. I love these books! A very enjoyable read, I find myself laughing out loud and can't put the books down. I enjoy Aisling as much as I enjoy Stephanie Plum (and that is saying a lot for me, since I'm addicted to Stephanie Plum novels, I think I found a new addiction). And the dragons..hot, hot, hot! Katie is definately a favorite author of mine now!

Perfect Ending.......2005-12-10
It took me YEARS to find all the books in this series and by the time I finally did I re-read all the books again before reading this last one. It's hard to rave on without spoiling the surpise but I think that by the time I opened this book I was feeling that Indigo's character had really deveolped in some ways over the course of the series but that in other ways she still seemed very juvenile for all that she is like really old after all adventures. This book was a masterpiece because it doesn't take the easy way out at the end but allows Indigo to push past these barriers. It's like things that I thought were flaws in the storyline ended up being purposely written in so that the ending was all the more dramatic in their resolution. It sounds corny but you get a sense that at the end Indigo's adventures are only just beginning. Absolutely put in the effort to get all the books for this series.
I wish there were more!.......2005-09-18
I loved the Indigo saga so much it was great, The ending of Aisling was beautiful! I wish that the story would not end there. I wish I could read a little more about Indigo and Grimya's everlasting life after the destruction of all the demons.I guess all stories have to have an end!
I just loved it so much!
Surprising conclusion to an enjoyable series.......2003-09-07
I first started reading this series a good few years ago, and now I own all the books in the series, though at the time they were hard to find.
In this book, after a long and harrowing journey that covers three quarters of a century, Indigo finally returns to her homeland of Carn Caille, to face the last of the demons she released from the tower of regrets.
Upon arrival at her native land, there is a nasty shipwreck which separates Indigo and her wolf-companion, Grimya, and leaves Indigo with a loss of memory. The plot revolves around Indigo's struggle to regain her memory while struggling to understand her connection to Carn Caille and the current ruling family, who become central characters in the book. It also revolves around Grimya and her struggle to find Indigo and help to restore her memory, as well as fight the evil at hand.
When I finished this book I wondered if the ending, as well as the different direction the series seemed to take after book 5 (Troika) was reflective of a change in the attitude of the author herself.
Personally, I thought this to be a refreshing ending, as a 'fairytale happy' ending would have been too predictable and ordinary. Not my favorite book in the series, but nevertheless I couldn't put it down the first time I read it.
Surprising ending!.......2000-10-23
After 7 books, it's natural that one is expectating what will happen in the end.
In the beginning of the book we find Indigo traveling to the Southern isles, her homeland, in hope of finding her love Feran still alive. But her ship wrecks and though she doesn't suffer grave injures to the body, she finds herself with her memories totally lost. She doesn't even remember Grimya, her faithfull companion. But in this land she doesn't remember and is now ruled by a family she doesn't even know, things threaten to go very badly indeed. For once we find the last demon waiting for her in an unexpected guise. And only the 'aisling', a magic tune, can bring back her memory, so that she can finish her mission.
I liked the way the book ends, I think it's according to Ms. cooper's style and very realystical.
WHAT?.......2000-08-17
That's what I said when I finished the book! After all that happened in the previous books, the ending was not what I expected. I guess that's what I get for believing in happy endings. I would still recommend the series to anyone though.

A thorough companion.......2006-12-07
If you plan on visiting the Islands of Cape Verde, this travel guide is essential. I have not found a better or more thorough guide. I currently live here but I am American and I knew nothing of the islands when I arrived. But after living here a while, I discovered that this book is as accurate as I initially thought. There are few things misspelled but that is to be overlooked by the amount of truely uselful and thorough the information is. I also liked the little touches of background and history on each island. It is very well done.
An essential for the cruising bookshelf.......2002-01-28
I first visited the Cape Verdes in 1987 while researching the ATLANTIC ISLANDS, a sailing guide covering the Azores, Madeira group, Canaries and Cape Verdes, now in its third edition. Getting information on the Cape Verdes in the English language was difficult in the extreme -- if only Aisling and Colum's excellent book had been available then! These days no sane person should visit the islands without reading it first. The Cape Verdes come as something of a culture shock after the Canaries -- this book will explain why, and help you get the most from the experience. Buy it!
Perfect blend of insight and practical help.......1999-06-01
This was just the sort of thing a hardened backpacker needed. It had all the useful nooks and crannies of info you need - plus the fact that it filled in a lot of the extra info you like to get about a place you're seeing. They gave a great account of the islands' history - it was really moving.
Finally a guide in English - And it is excellent!.......1999-01-30
Irwin and Wilson's guide gives you all the factual information you need, and in addition succeeds in capturing the spirit of Cape Verde, with boxes on cultural and historical issues linked to each island. There is no doubt about it: This is the best guide available. If you read German, Rolf Osang's "Kapverdische Inseln" from Dumont is nearly as good and a useful supplement (especially when it comes to photos). The chapters on Cape Verde in Rough Guides' and Lonely Planet's books on West Africa are neither up-to-date nor in-depth enough if you plan to spend more than a few days in Cape Verde (which you should!).
The appendix on Crioulo language in Irwin and Wilson's book is brief but good. Don't be put off by the nasty details on horrible diseases in the section on health!

A unique and unusual book of poetic paragraphs.......2003-07-17
The Dream Of Being: Aphorisms, Ideograms, And Aislings by Jack Haas is a unique and unusual book of poetic paragraphs, enhanced with black-and-white illustrations of freestyle art, and embracing personal transformation as well as an esoteric evolution. The single (or few-paragraph) vignettes are not in a verse format, yet the rambling sentences evoke images and emotions similar to brief poems. The Dream Of Being is a very different type of inspirational work and highly recommended as an example of the art of poetry -- and the poetry of art. "Dreams end. What ends is a dream."
