Book Description

AGATHA OWNS A weaving shop in Manhattan and likes to answer the questions of children who want to know the source of her beautiful fabrics. She always recites a little verse to them: Everything comes from something, Nothing comes from nothing. Just like paper comes from trees, And glass comes from sand, An answer comes from a question. All you have to do is ask. Perhaps Agatha forgets her own advice, for one night her pleasant sleep is disrupted by six cranky, cold, naked geese. They want to discuss the source of the feathers keeping her so warm in her brand new feather bed. In a delightful O. Henry-inspired ending, Agatha arrives at a solution that benefits them all, teaching readers to understand the delicate balance between our resources and responsibilities.

5 out of 5 stars Agatha's Feather Bed.......2007-09-27

I have purchsed many copies of this delightful book for grandchildren and others. I have read it to first through fourth graders in our neighborhood elementary school who loved it also. Older children and adults appreciate all the double entendres in Deedy's stories.Illustrations are great, too.

5 out of 5 stars Creative story for inquisitive little minds.......2007-06-05

I'm so glad a friend of mine recommended this book and that Amazon had a copy. I bought one for my new little niece. I only wish I had this book when I was a child. I would have read it again and again.

5 out of 5 stars One of a kind book.......2005-08-12

If everything comes from something, where do the feathers in a feather bed come from? This dilemma (or rather the dilemma of six naked geese) confronts Agatha as she snuggles down for the first time in her brand new feather bed. The geese whose feathers she's sleeping on are not happy with the current state of events, and tell Agatha so. Seeing the justice of the geese's complaints, Agatha makes the geese warm, fluffy white coats to wear until their feathers grow back.

This story loses much of its charm in a summary. The best part of the story is the idioms it uses. Agatha is a spinner and a storyteller: "She can spin a yarn better than anyone I know". That quote is just one of the many examples of the common phrases that take on a new meaning when talking to geese. That is what makes this book so special. Other than that, the story is told well; it flows nicely and is easy to read out loud.

The illustrations are beautiful, but different. They abound with detail, and on each page is a box with a picture of a raw material, and what it is made into. (Cotton boll, cotton. Dinosaurs, fossil fuel.) The pictures are very expressive, very detailed, beautiful, and fun. A great story.

5 out of 5 stars Agatha's Featherber is a Fine Feathered Friend.......2002-06-24

I've used this book in the classroom and have found students telling me when we've discovered where something comes from it's just like in Agatha's Featherbed. The book is remembered and students love the story. The ending comes as a wonderful surprise. What a wonderful modern day O'Henry adaptation for the Gift of the Magi. This book could be used for comparison to the O'Henry story. I read this book with my students year after year and each time I enjoy it a little more. It is too bad it is out of print. I think it's a remarkable book full of humor. It spurs students to inquire about where things come from. The author should know she's made an impression on me as well as my students. Thank you Ms. Deedy. The illustrations rank as a Caldecott. Thank you Ms. Seeley.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite children's book and baby gift!.......2001-11-15

I love, love, love this book. I love to read it to children. I love to read it myself! I have given at least six of them as baby shower gifts and have just ordered another one to give. Children love it for its fun story; but,as they get older, they keep liking it on different levels--just for its beautiful illustrations alone, for its word play (which they understand more and more of as they progress so there is always some "new in it", for the side pictures that teach us where things come from, and so much more. As an adult, I never get tired of reading it as I do so many other children's books -- even good ones -- that I feel like I could recite in my sleep. If you were allowed to give 10 stars, I would give this book that many! I cannot say enough for it. Sadly, it is usually not available in bookstores anymore...BUT, Amazon has it!

      1 out of 5 stars Pathetic!.......2006-04-06

I am ashame to know that an asian person wrote this book....that's just how bad it is. To those that rated this book with high marks: dont believe everything you read - you were duped. And by the way, unlike how the author describes the asian culture - chinese, japanese, korean, and all of the various asian ethnic groups do NOT share the same traditions.

      1 out of 5 stars Cultural Co-opting.......2000-01-29

I bought this book, or rather I picked it out and, very nicely, my boyfriend/fiance paid for it, and it was really cheesy.

A Chinese American woman wrote this book about how to gear your wedding to include some cultural aspects of one's ethnicity but the book is totally useless. She says stuff like "My fiance and I picked out invitations that had crances flying over a peaceful lake and instead of having traditional italics, we chose an ORIENTAL style of writing" First of all, Being asian is more that some cheesy cranes flying over a lake and no asian person invented that kungfu bamboo style lettering you see at take out chinese places. Also, what the heck is "oriental"? Uggh.

This person doesn't seem to know that having or doing things as an Asian or Asian American would do them involves more than an invitation with motifs based on caricatures of what non asians think represent asian culture or apeing practices from the past if you don't carry yourself and think of yourself as Asian american or asian. I mean, a yak won shik (engagement ceremony/dinner) is normal if your friends and sisters and brothers and cousins and your future kids are going to do it and it has an affinity with the past and the future in your family, but when you do it to think it will give your wedding an "Asian" flair than that is when a culture is in danger if being co-opted for the mere opportunity to dress in costume and feel that you are more asian than you think you are.

It's like thinking of a hanbok as a costume rather than as an item of clothing (albeit one that doesn't get that much use) in one's wardrobe.

I'm about halfway through and am loathe to finish the rest but I hate to let the book go to waste.

Anyway, a warning not to buy this useless, wedding industry, book.

1 out of 5 stars Too Generic with some false information.......1999-09-16

I bought this book on a whim since my cousins & I are at the age where we are getting married. This book may be useful if your family has been in this country for several generations or if you are not of Chinese ancestry. As a 1st generation American Born Chinese, I was hoping to ready more about the do's & don'ts - (i.e. the tea set used to serve tea for the new in-laws must be purchased by the bride, her family, or a friend.) Also, in the section about Chinese wedding banquets, she states that 'in China, 4 is a lucky number'. BAD MISTAKE. In some dialects, the pronunciation of the word four sounds like the Chinese pronunciation of DEATH. Eight is the luckiest number. I do Not recommend this book because of some mistakes and lack of interesting information.

4 out of 5 stars Good overall view of Asian-American wedding customs.......1999-07-06

Gives equal time to different ethnicities, and points out that the rituals and customs described are generalizations, and that customs vary from region to region. Focuses more on 1st-generation Asian-Americans, but is still useful to a 3rd-gen. Chinese-American like me. The legends, folklore, and poetry sprinkled thru-out the book are beautiful and very touching. Could use a bit more detail in places, but this book is a great place to start investigating Asian wedding traditions.

      Book Description

This work is a singular mass of information illustrating the lineage, honours and achievements of families connected with Ireland by birth, rank, title or alliance which took the author over 50 years to compile. Many of his sources are now lost to time, but his work survives.

A body of 30.000 - 40,000 Irish, plundered of their estates left Ireland under different leaders, and entered the service of France, Spain, Austria and Venice. The 'Wild Geese' of Ireland are each documented here by name. (Every family from 70 regiments is D'Altons starting point.) For Each family D'Alton gives historical and genealogical illustrations. For Irish families he concentrates particularly on ancient locations. For families who came to Ireland from England and Scotland, he often gives the place from which they came and at what date .

D'Alton, dedicated to the ancient family history of each of the Wild Geese of Ireland, takes each family into to the 17th century confiscations and Acts of Settlements down to the 1800's as possible. The information in this work will link Irish families together worldwide back to the homeland.

This is a very under used resource. It has the names and family history of these "wild geese" in Ireland who fought on the Irish sied in the war.

This is a very useful source of genealogical information. It gives a genealogical history for the families of most of the officers involved in the Irish army of King James the Second.

      Book Description

Wild Geese caused a sensation when it was first published in 1925. To a generation bred on sentimental escapist literature, the idea of a heroine as wild as a bronco and as fiery as a tigress was nothing short of revolutionary. In the character of Judith Gare, Martha Ostenso had painted so naked and uncompromising a portrait of human passion and need that it crossed all bounds of propriety and convention.

Today, Wild Geese is widely recognized as a milestone in the development of modern realist fiction. Set on the windswept prairies, it is a story of love and tyranny, of destruction and survival, told with vigour and lyric beauty. It is also a poignant evocation of loneliness, which, like the call of the wild geese, is beyond human warmth, beyond tragedy, “an endless quest.”

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars Canada's Willa Cather........2000-12-23

In 1925, Martha Ostenso was a young student enrolled in a writing course at New York's Columbia University. Upon hearing that the publishers Dodd, Mead, and Company were holding a contest for the best North American novel she decided to return to Winnipeg Manitoba and devote herself to winning the prize. From her rented room, she completed the draft of Wild Geese in a mere six weeks. Her submission beat out 1,389 competitors to win, and became her first of many published novels.

Wild Geese is the story of the Gares, a very secluded rural family that is presided over by the tyrrannical father/husband Caleb Gare. He subjects them to what can only be described as daily slavery... fiercely suppressing anything that does not contribute to his maniacal tilling of the land. Because of Caleb's selfish need for constant control and domination of others, freedom of expression is not allowed in the Gare household. But this does not set well at all for his fiery tigress of a daughter (Judith) and their live-in schoolteacher Lind Archer. Together, these two women represent the hope of passion, the power of beauty, and the occasional whiff of perfume amidst the manure of Caleb's machinations. Will he be able to ultimately thwart his daughter's freedom? Will Caleb be able to destroy Lind's lover with the terrible secret that only he and his wife know about? Not until the VERY last pages do we really know the answers to those questions, and Ostenso does a great job of keeping the reader interested up to that point and beyond.

She is very much in the style of Willa Cather who also wrote of the windswept plains of the early 1900's. If you enjoy Cather's well-known "O Pioneers" or "My Antonia" I think you will really enjoy Wild Geese.

      4 out of 5 stars A true story.......2000-04-03

While visiting in the area that this book is from, the interlake of Manitoba,Canada,I met a few of the people who can identify the true life characters who were the models for this epic.

      It is a true saga.

I found the story that more captivating for this knowledge. It delves into the human spirit especially in the harsh early years of the building of the nations.

      5 out of 5 stars A very good read........1999-12-05

I thought this was a really good book. I read it in one sitting. The characters are believable and well-written. You can totally become engrossed in their lives. It's a powerful story about how people can not only endure, but overcome, oppression and tyranny.

3 out of 5 stars A study of human cruelty and human love........1999-11-18

It takes a while to get into this book. I had to read it for grade 11 history. It's not that great, but you find yourself empathizing with the characters Lind and Judith. It's a little slow at the beginning, (okay, the first 150 pages, or so), but it picks up near the end. It reminds me of a soap opera, the way the characters have their secrets, and their lives are intertwined

1 out of 5 stars Even a classic on prairie life as a book is monotonous........1999-05-07

This book may be a classic work, with realistic, down to earth believable characters, but the fact that it is based on monotonous life leads the book the be the same, boring and mostly pointless.

        4 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction.......2005-07-02

I have been looking for a good book about the legendary Wild Geese for many years. Unfortunately, the history of Irish expatriate soldiers is a very long and intricate story. It is very difficult in one volume to cover the story from the years immediately following the Battle of the Boyne to the end of the American Civil War.

Maurice Hennessy has a lot of history on his plate and unfortunately he does not have the narrative skill to elegantly wrap it all up in one volume. Like many popular military histories written in the 1970's by non-historians, Hennessey touches on the high points but does not get very deep into the subject. A person wanting to know more about the Wild Geese will have to read more specialized books about individual units and actions. Finally, like many books written in the 1970's, the illustrations are relegated to a few black and white photos lumped together in several sections. Publishing and printing has gone through technological revolution in the past three decades. If you are looking for good illustrations, stick with the Osprey book.

4 out of 5 stars The Irish Soldier in Exile.......2004-01-19

"The Wild Geese" are the legendary Catholic soldiers of Patrick Sarsfield who fled Ireland after the Willemite War (Nine Years' War) and entered the service of French, Italian and Austrian regimes. The Wild Geese include the legendary Marshal Duke of Berwick, French general, bastard son of James II and hero of the Spanish theater of the War of the Spanish Succession. They also include a succession of French regiments, whose various feats include spearheading de Saxe's victory at Fontenoy (1745). Hennessy then takes us to the American civil war, the Italian unification wars and numerous other far-flung fields in which Irish exiles have fought.

5 out of 5 stars You pull for the characters .......2006-02-21

What makes this book good? First: it's the writing, and the writing is good. Carney handles the narrative very well. He also inserts a discussion of Africa between two characters, a discussion about race, politics and the violence of the times, which hasn't changed all that much from then, circa 1970 to now.

Now, the book is different from the movie in that more characters are introduced, and these character have `depth,' and considering the story is basically about mercenaries finding a why to make them likable isn't just important, it's necessary, and Carney success there also. Each character on which Carney spends time has a history. All the characters change during the course of the story and many die.

This story has some romance, but is not a romance, just as it has `action,' but is not an adventure. There is gunfire, but no `gunplay.' There is no nobility of course, but no bloodthirstiness. Being a mercenary is a job. You pull for the characters simply because you don't want someone you like to die.

4 out of 5 stars Great mercenary adventure.......2003-03-01

A group of over-the-hill soldiers are called upon to assemble a mercenary army for a single mission: rescue the dissident leader of an embattled African nation. When the current regime proves intractable at the negotiating table, a consortium of British companies hits on the perfect plan to turn things in their direction. By springing the country's popular but jailed former leader out of jail (I guess he was supposed to be a stand-in for Patrice Lumamba, murdered former president of the Congo, but that's just a guess), they'll have the needed leverage. The mercs they hire sound like they're about ready for retirement, but gamely decide on "one-last-mission". The novel lightly but briefly plays up preparations in a way tat suggests the mission will be a walk-over. Eventually, it is - unfortunately, our heroes forget that being mercenaries, they are not the only side that owes no allegiance. When the regime caves in too quickly, the mercenaries' contractors decide that the Wild Geese are now a liability, and abandon them. Now cut off in enemy territory, the mercenary army must fight its way out. It's no easy go.

This was a great story, but it's not told all that well. The real meat of the book is the desperate escape, but the entire story feels rushed, even though there's a great story to be told. When our heroes are first introduced, the book hints at their complex lives ... without ever really fleshing them out. Also, it's hard to believe that our heroes - hardly innocent characters - couldn't see their betrayal coming. Still a great story, and certainly no small consolation for those who can't find the flick.

5 out of 5 stars A rousing adventure from start to finish!.......2000-07-29

I read The Wild Geese after seeing the movie and I was not disappointed! The novel covers everything from romance, action, politics and even takes a stab at racism. I truly love the film as it is one of my favorite films ever. The story is easy to follow, engrossing, and one feels for the characters. Terrific for those interested in Africa, military matters, and action. Note: After searching six years for the film on video (out of print unfortunately) I had to go on another trek to find the book also out of print! So my advice to anyone interested is buy it when you see it! Ebay is a good place, thats where I found mine.

5 out of 5 stars A thumping good read to rival Wilbur Smith.......1998-12-12

The late Daniel Carney (d 1985) was one of Africa's greatest writers and The Wild Geese was his finest book.

Mercenary action and some scary predictions about the Congo. Well structured which makes the story easy to follow.

The film starring Richard Burton, Roger Moore and Richard Harris is still available on video and is true to the novel

5 out of 5 stars Very detailed and realistic adventure! A must-read........1998-10-31

This book has it all! Lots of military action, but of the sophisticated kind. Romance, too. Exciting, very deep and moving at times. We get to see the mercenaries not just as shallow cutouts of soldiers, but as people, getting a glimpse into their inner selves. Very detailed and factual, almost as if Carney is writing from personal experience. Has a great closing paragraph! I could go on and on, but you'll have to read it yourself.

        4 out of 5 stars "I'll call him Hugo...".......2007-08-02

Based on a fantasy video game series, Suikoden III: The Successor of Fate Volume 1 takes place eighteen years after Suikoden I and opens with the birth of Hugo, the son of the Chief of the Karaya. Moving quickly into his childhood, while out hunting with a Karaya warrior, Hugo comes across a fallen gryphon shot down while leading it's chick away from danger. Hugo finds the orphaned babe, brings it home, and names it Fubar--however after living with him for a few months, Hugo's mother decides it's time to sell the growing animal with the reasoning it could kill someone since it is still a wild beast. Sneaking into the shadows of darkness to save it's life, Hugo sets Fubar free only to have a surprising experience change their relationship forever.

The second storyline is about Lady Chris Lightfellow, a girl orphaned by a father who is presumed deceased. After entering the Service Academy, Chris rose to the position of Secondary Knight in the Zexen Federation and this is where her story begins, with Chris on a battlefield accompanied by Sir Salome, a character of which we are introduced to through a flashback along with several other key players as the backstory continues. Jumping back to the present, Chris watches helplessly as the soldiers fall around her, mercilessly slaughtered until an unforeseen incident leads to her earning the title of "The Silver Maiden."

It is at this point where the two storylines converge and build the groundwork of why these two clans, and specifically Hugo and Chris, suddenly find themselves deep in conflict even though they both were trying to build towards peace.

The artwork effectively elaborates the storyline and generally speaking Suikoden III is drawn fairly well providing fine detail as needed, like with Chris's backstory, and offset enough with a heavier pen to show contrast in scenes of high action or when featuring masculine personas like Hugo.

The characters themselves, from Chris to Hugo to a varied assortment of usual archetypes came across as distinct personalities, although there's always that one that makes you wonder what the authors/artists were thinking ;)

In closing, Suikoden III: The Successor of Fate Volume 1 is good Manga that offers the beginning to a complex storyline and shows good promise of developing into an attention-holding, entertaining read. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars More of the same.......2005-10-23

Well at this stage you're either commited to buying the manga or not. I've been getting it myself more for the curiousity of seeing how well the game translates into a manga. I would say this is one for the fans only. The manga is of an adequate standard but its nothing groundbreaking.

        4 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2005-09-24

So far I've only read this edition of this series. I bought it for a friend and nearly didn't send it to him >.> I very, very much enjoyed the characters and the drawing style. Definetly recommended.

        5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2005-08-04

I don't like the suikoden III game very much because it's slow to get through, with general dialogue, and I got stuck in a pointless chapter. It's also rather low-impact. I wanted very much to find out the story, though, because the game enjoys a very good reputation for its plot. Thankfully, it's been converted to comic book form.

There is a plethora of reasons why the manga suceeds- for one thing, the script is either causal or emotional, leagues away from the informative tone of the game. The character interaction really shines through for dutiful Chris, fiery Hugo, and enigmatic Geddoe; what's more, they're all drawn beautifully and resemble their original design. The look of suikoden III is very distinctive, yet the artist managed to make even background characters unique, but true to the fashion of thier respective cultures. The color pages are an added bonus.

Being a story of war there is the occasional battle, of course- and that is where you can see the mangaka's skills at capturing both the human mind and human figure. Not only are the clashes visually dynamic, the politics, inner-conflict, and self-discoveries of war have a big role, and are presented in a way that is both intricate and entertaining.

What really helps is that the manga has a great origin-the game-but evolves into it's own medium. It doesn't feel like a retelling, but a story in its own right, especially since the author makes alterations (which don't impose upon the game's concepts) The comic is good for fans- but it's excellent for everyone.
