Drop the years.......2007-07-23
My wife and I became interested in Kettlebell fitness techniques and decided we would give it a try.
I ordered this for my wife who was over the age of 60. She has always been in fair physical condition, not a fitness freak but also not a couch potato. After a couple of weeks of this exercise plan the difference in her body and sense of well being was obvious. After about six months, she shocks most 40 year old women with her energy and appearance.
There is no doubt that she has reset the clock on physical aging with this plan.

The content on the excersises is good, although there should be more shown. my biggest problem with this book are the pages and pages of what i call advertisement for the kettlebells. i can see one or two comments from people who have used and reccomend the kettlebells, but there are so many that it is distracting and annoying!! I might be less tempted to purchase another of his books if this is the format for all his books.
Kettlebells rule.......2007-02-16
Kettlebells offer unique advantages over other ways to exercise. Instead of alternating days of weight training for strength with aerobics for fat loss, you can do it in one workout, doing ballistics. Snatches, swings, cleans and jerks give you twice the exercise in half the time. There is also a remarkable carryover effect from kettlebell training onto other, seemingly non-related sports activities.
At the moment of writing this was the best book on kettlebells. The newer one, Enter the Kettlebell, is more elaborate and more hard core. This one is more suitable for the ladies, in my opinion.
Best workout ever!.......2005-08-02
When I first heard of kettlebells a couple months ago they seemed like they were for hardcore macho-man types--commandos, Green Berets, whatever. Not for me, a plump middleaged woman trying to get into shape and lose fat.
But then I found out about this book and video for women, and suddenly I knew I had to try it. I'm so glad I did!!!
Pavel's attitude is highly amusing as he milks the macho Russian drill sergeant schtick for all it's worth, but it's all tongue-in-cheek. And at the same time, he's giving priceless information and motivation about a training method that I'm sure will be huge once it catches on, because the results are so spectacular and quick and it's so physically satisfying and fun to do.
I ordered this book, the accompanying DVD, and one 15-lb. kettlebell to get started with, and I received them and started using them about a week ago. I can honestly say that this kettlebell workout is the greatest form of exercise I've ever tried.
I'd been eating a super-healthy top-quality diet for about five or six months and going to the gym and using the machines (both resistance and cardio) for about an hour to an hour and a half. Hadn't seen much in the way of results yet, despite my healthy diet and working out several times a week. I was feeling good, though.
But when I tried the kettlebell, it just ***blew away*** my gym workouts. I've been using the KB for about a week now and plan to cancel my gym membership ASAP. The KB stays in my bedroom and I use it at least once a day, sometimes twice, for up to 20 minutes at a time. It feels so good that I WANT to do it--and that means no more time-consuming trips to the gym for me.
I'm already starting to feel a difference in my body composition. According to Pavel, if you work out a lot with kettlebells you can shred up to 1% of your body fat per week, which is a LOT.
The book has a lot of pictures showing the correct form, which I like, and it explains the WHY's behind KB training, which helped me to quickly gain a basic understanding of everything KB-related without having to read the book cover-to-cover.
As for the DVD, I watched it through twice, and then started just skipping to the workout at the end, where the two women (DC and Andrea) are doing a freestyle KB workout as Pavel comments in the background. I watched that freestyle workout every day the first few days, as I did my own freestyle workouts, but now (yesterday and today), I've started just doing a freestyle workout to my favorite music instead.
I feel I don't really need the book or the DVD anymore, except for occasional reference. So, to me, I'd say the most valuable part of the three things I bought to get started (Pavel's book, DVD, and a kettlebell) was by far the kettlebell itself. You pretty much need to have either the book or the DVD, or both, to get started, however, because you need to learn the various drills, correct form, etc. The DVD physically demonstrates how to do it, whereas the book explains why and gives more detail. In my opinion you need both, although for me I think the DVD was more valuable.
These KB exercises are very different from dumbbell exercises. Way more fun, for starters! It just FEELS incredibly good to do the KB workouts. I get a flood of pleasant endorphins after only about 15 minutes, whereas it used to take me about an hour to achieve that at the gym. My flexibility has already improved a lot too--now I spring out of bed in the morning like a panther, rather than dragging myself around with morning joint pain/stiffness. After only a week of daily use!
I'm so glad I found out about working out with KBs--I know it will make a profound difference in my life and health. I'm telling everybody I know about them. I'm completely confident that I will be able to shed over 100 lbs. of body fat in a year with my kettlebell training. I'm so ready to become a FEMME FATALE!!!
An Evolution In Method.......2005-07-28
"From Russia With Tough Love" represents an evolution in Pavel's methods of teaching kettlebell techniques. "The Russian Kettlebell Challenge" was male-oriented, taught basic exercises and then said "Have at it." "From Russia with Tough Love" is designed for women, assumes that the reader is an absolute beginner, starts from ground zero, and builds an effective workout step-by-step. I recommend "From Russia with Tough Love" for anyone, male or female, who is just starting out with kettlebells.

Fleming at his peak.......2007-10-07
Among the many James Bond movies, From Russia With Love has always been my favorite, a feeling that I know is shared by many others. It seems fitting, as the novel upon which it is based is also one of Ian Fleming's strongest.
Interestingly, in this top notch Bond novel, the British super-spy is not even mentioned until after page 50 (in my 378 page version of the book) and does not appear until page 123. Superficially, this might be a weakness, but it actually makes the book stronger, as we are introduced to a couple of the best villains in the series. Red Grant is a psychopathic killer who has defected to Russia to be allowed to murder more freely as the chief executioner of SMERSH. Even more sinister is Rosa Klebb, the top SMERSH officer who will oversee a conspiracy to kill Bond.
Why kill Bond? The simple answer is to embarrass the Western Intelligence agencies. This is not to be a simple assassination, but a carefully plotted homicide designed to humiliate the British Secret Service. To lure Bond into the appropriate place, the beautiful Tatiana Romanova is recruited to pose as a defector who has fallen for Bond after seeing his picture in a file. Bond and his boss M suspect a trap, but they have no idea what it might be. In case Tatiana is sincere, however, Bond meets with her in Turkey and starts the process of bringing her west.
This book does have its little problems - such as the standard villain monologue in which a bad guy explains all to Bond - but overall, this is Fleming at his best, probably because there is no grand conspiracy of destruction or conquest; instead Bond himself is at the center and the opposition is formidable. This is a must-read for Bond fans.
Classic Bond.......2007-08-08
In From Russia with Love, Ian Fleming weaves the fifth tale of his James Bond adventures. Certainly this book is a classic, and the film was one of the best. In this tale, SMERSH decides to take out Bond permanently to make a point to the worldwide intelligence community and to divert attention from mistakes made by the Russians. To accomplish this mission, SMERSH calls on their chief assassin to do the deed. He is a memorable character, but in the end proves to be no match for Bond. The inevitable love interest comes along as Tatiana Romanova, a beautiful young Russian woman. Of course, the story would not be complete without Rosa Klebb, the head of the Department of Torture and Death for SMERSH. All of these characters, plus the memorable Turk Kerim Bey, are involved in a unforgettable ride on the Orient Express. This is a must-read James Bond adventure.
Ian Fleming Still Hasn't Lost His Touch.......2007-08-08
By this time, the fifth novel, Ian Fleming has mastered the character of James Bond and the story telling that goes with. There is a lot of action in this story, but I didn't really feel it was worth five stars-more like four and a half. A couple of things kind of made the lower score for me. One reason being that Bond doesn't even show up in the novel until page 95. Don't get me wrong, the story building up to the main plot is very interesting and informative, but those who want just Bond might not care for the first ninety five pages that much.
The other thing, which is a good thing, is that this novel is actually very much like the movie! All the books previous to this one are some what very different from the movie, but this is real close, a lot of the lines from the movie are in the book. It's not a big deal, but it does get a little dull knowing what is going to happen and does happen. If you have seen the movie, then you pretty much get the idea of the book. Overall, this is a really well written story and an improvement over the novel Diamonds Are Forever. It's just that it is so similar to the movie, there are really no surprises.
Super Reader.......2007-08-04
This novel goes back to the world of super villain espionage. Bond's successes against SMERSH are starting to cause problems for the assassin organisation, and get them political heat from higher up. As a result, they plan to send a top guy to rid them of their 007 problem. Unfortunately for SMERSH, Bond gets a bit of help from Q-Branch.
The Soviets try the beautiful double agent gambit again, but this one falls for his manly charms.
The SMERSH agent finale is attempted murder on the Orient Express. No torture for Bond, but he ends up in a bad way.
Beware of the beginning!.......2007-07-01
Ok, I wanted to put in my two cents here because I think there is something about this book that will upset many would-be-readers. Bond doesn't even coming into the story until like page NINETY!! The first few pages of the book are interesting, setting up the whole background of Nash, and how he got into the business. But... it just KEEPS GOING ENDLESSLY, then they start talking about Tatiana for another ten pages or so before Bond is even introduced. From a technical point of view, this is a HUGE writing mistake, and if it weren't for the huge fan base Bond already has, I don't think many people would fight through those ninety pages.
Other than that, it's a great book and follows the movie extremely closely. I liked that they didn't make the part with Captain Nash and Bond as lame as the movie was. In the movie Bond KNOWS Nash put the drug into Tatiana's drink, then turns his back on Nash so they can look at the map. Stupid beyond belief, but the book handles it quite a bit better. Over all, if you like Bond, read this book, but be aware you might be skimming some pages in the beginning.

This guide helped me a lot on stuff like bond moments the objectives were straightforward so I didn't really need it there. But the bond moments were hard to identify! I also used the maps a lot to see places that items to pick up resided. overal, a simple but good guide.

Bond. James Bond. This book is an instant classic. This is exactly how Ian Fleming created it. In this book, James must deal with saboteurs, women, and international conspiracy. As a three part book, this novel requires a decent chunk of time to complete, but is worth every minute! It includes the classic stories: From Russia with Love (in which James must escape from Russia with a dangerous Russian organization desperate to prevent him from ever escaping alive), Doctor No (A man with robotic hands is plotting something against the United States. Can James stop him, and escape his deadly obstacle course with his life still intact?), and Goldfinger (Someone is smuggling gold out of banks, and may be connected with Bond's long-time friends in Russia. Can James uncover this plot? And is something even bigger at stake?) As a long time fan of James, I highly recommend this book. Some scenes are quite descriptive as of Bond's relationship with the women he sleeps with, s this book is mostly suited to anyone over the age of 14.
The three greatest 007 novels in one volume!.......2002-04-06
This great collection of Ian Fleming's three James Bond thriller novels, From Russia, With Love, Doctor No, and Goldfinger is the best deal anywhere if you're looking for cheap classics. Even though it's not avaliable anymore, ... so if you get an oppurtunity buy it instantly.
From Russia, With Love is about a Soviet conspiracy involving a code machine called the Spektor, a lovely Russian female named Tatiania Romanova, and a professional killer who is affected by the moon. The girl sends for Bond, pledging her love and at the same time luring him into a trap that would seriously damage the Service's image. Great read and the best Cold War thriller out there.
In Doctor No, James Bond is sent to investigate two agents who have disappeared in Jamaica. He soon discovers the clues linking him to Doctor No, a Chinese/German doctor who has an island base in Jamaica, where he disrupts U.S. missile firing. James endures through his toughest physcial test of his career, and some consider Dr. No to be the best 007 novel ever written.
Goldfinger is in my opinion the best 007 novel of all. While investigating a cheat at cards by the name of Auric Goldfinger, James is informed that he is also involved in smuggling Great Britain's gold reserves to India, where the Russians wait for it. As James is captured, he discovers Goldfinger's master plan--to raid Fort Knox itself! With the smartest villian, the toughest henchman, and the most thrilling climax of all the James Bonds, Goldfinger is the by far the best masterpiece ever to come from the desk of Ian Fleming.
This wonderful trilogy is an enthralling epic of the Cold War, and I recommend it to anyone who has either read Ian Fleming before, or is thinking of starting very soon.
Better the the movies.......2000-02-09
This is a great book, and after reading this I watched all the movies again, and they can't even compare. If you enjoy James Bnd you will enoy this, I mean I am only eleven and I couldn't tare my eyes away. I enjoyed the action, suspense, romance, and even the detail, Iam Flemming is truly a master writer, and can only portay James Bond. The movies are nothing comapred to this, this is a must get.
Great collection...but with a correction.......1999-12-29
These three books together are, in some ways, the epitome of James Bond. However, I must correct one of the reviews. These books *are* sequential. These books are 5, 6, and 7 in the order that Fleming published them. The 8th was The Spy Who Loved Me and the 9th was Thunderball, the first book in the Blofeld trilogy. Aside from the 10th book, For Your Eyes Only (a collection of short stories), the story picks up in On Her Majesty's Secret Service and ends with You Only Live Twice. These three Blofeld books are available in the James Bond Omnibus, volume 2.
Excellent storytelling.......1999-12-22
I am a fan of the James Bond movies but the recent ones have let me down. So instead of giving up on Bond, I have taken to reading the stories and they are far better than I had imagined. Almost every one is better then the film that it spawned. Ian Fleming's Bond is far superior to the Bond that Hollywood is sticking us with. Bond does not spout off one liners, shoot everything in sight, or have an obligatory load up on spy gadgets scene in Ian Fleming's books. This book is just great.

Unlike Loren Coleman's 1st Age of Conan trilogy, this latest start to another set of trilogies left me flat. The premise was good, but the pace and prose left much to be disired.
Thus, the lack of tons of good reviews - or reviews period!
Even though I didn't think Loren Coleman's trilogy was worthy of the Robert E. Howard Conan name attached to it - it stood alone on its merit. It didn't capture the essence of Conan for me, but was still a solid trilogy in its own world. Just not Howards.
This one less so. Reads like it was for elementary school kids. Sorry, but if you are going to write in the realm of Conan - only rated R will do!
A fun read........2006-03-16
Being a Robert E. Howard fan, I'm excited that someone has finally started writing other stories taking place in his Hyborian age. However, it has to be done right, if not for the entertainment values, then out of respect for REH. Mariotte does that here. Of all the places and peoples of the Hyborian world to write a story, none better could be picked then the Pictish frontier. Howard himself wrote of his fascination with the Picts.
A forbidden friendship (hinting of future romance) between a young Pictish warrior, Kral, and an Aquilonian ambassador's daughter, Alanya, gives an ambitious uncle the excuse to break the fragile truce of the frontier. After his clan is massacred, Kral fights a one man war against the empire and starts his quest to return the sacred Teeth of the Ice Bear. Alanya becomes his ally as she must right the wrongs done against her and her family.
I do question a couple things that Mariotte has in this story. I'm not sure what the Aquilonion policy would be with the Pictish people, since Howard wrote of the racial hatred between King Conan's people, the Cimmierians, and the Picts. Then again, if anyone could understand and respect the savage Picts, it would be the ultimate barbarian himself. Also, Mariotte's take on the Picts isn't as brutal as the way Howard wrote of them (in Howard's stories, "brutal", would be a compliment). Of course, we must remember this story is told more from the Picts's side then any of Howard's.
At times the story seems a little simplistic, but that's only part of the fun. This story reminds me of the books like, ERB's Tarzan and REH's original Conan stories, that I loved so much as an adolescent. It's only a couple hundred pages long with short, to-the-point chapters, and all wrapped in a cover sporting the exiting illustrations that make you daydream of barbaric warriors and exotic beauties. I can't wait for the next book.

Conan meet Ghengis Khan.......2007-06-23
John Maddox Roberts writes my favorite Conan spinoffs and this is the best of his lot. Roberts has shown with his S.P.Q.R. series set in ancient Rome that he can write solid, character-driven historical fiction. It is no different in Marauder. Conan meets a steppe chieftan on his way to world domination and much of the technological and cultural references throughout the book are accurate to the Mongol empire under Temujin. Roberts obviously did his research before setting about writing this tale. A few other notable features of Marauder are the large-scale battle scenes, the unique environment of the steppes (I can't think of any other Conan adventure set entirely upon the grasslands south of Turan and west of Khitai), and the richly detailed city of Sogaria. You will find yourself rooting for Conan as he ascends from captured slave to the khan's second-in-command to outcast to freelancer. In all, an exciting story, a unique take on the Conan genre and a solid alternative history combine to make Marauder well worth the $1 it costs to buy a used copy.
A different kind of Conan.......2005-08-07
In this Conan pastiche, we see the Cimmerian go from slave to general and back to his barbarian roots. Captured by the Hyrkanian tribes, he battles his way to a spot in the army of Bartatua, would-be ruler of the world. Betrayed by Lakhme, one of the nastiest females in the Conan saga, he finds himself trying to rescue the city he has just laid siege to. He also finds himself helping an annoying poet rescue the city's princess. The book has some nice touches. One moment that struck me, and it was only one line, was when oil drenched corpses are used to light the work site for a siege ramp. Surprisingly for a Conan story, there is no girl for the barbarian and the sorcery (with monster)is compressed into just 3 pages. In addition, though I often find the secondary characters in a Conan pastiche to be forgettable, Roberts creates several characters who merit stories of their own. Lakhme, Manzur the poet, Bartatua, Conan's friend Rustuf are all characters I would like to see again. It's a different kind of Conan story but a superior pastiche.

This is one of the best Conan knock-offs. Conan is captured and sold into slavery. He works his way into a postition in the army of a charismatic nomad warrior. Conan begins training a squad into elite soilders. There isn't anything deep or meaningful in this book, and it meanders pretty bad in the middle, but the begnning and the end are exciting. I would recomend this oneyour average Conan fan.

i think this is actually the worst conan-story i have read. the plot didn't grab me, seemed to artificial to me. melodramatic. so the rest seemed pretty dull to me too. i never really believed in this story, which was carried out in a dull way too. not much suspence
Why I Like Conan The Marauder.......2001-01-04
This story is about an epic adventure with Conan, a Cimmerian being captured as a slave and working his way up through the ranks in the army. He fights in many battles and wins most of them. In the end he has to fight a very powerful wizard whose name is Khondemir. I really enjoyed this story because I like a lot of action in stories. I like the author describing how people die. Most of the time it shows what is on their minds.
