From 1840 until 1940, freak shows by the hundreds crisscrossed the United States, from the smallest towns to the largest cities, exhibiting their casts of dwarfs, giants, Siamese twins, bearded ladies, savages, snake charmers, fire eaters, and other oddities. By today's standards such displays would be considered cruel and exploitative—the pornography of disability. Yet for one hundred years the freak show was widely accepted as one of America's most popular forms of entertainment.
Robert Bogdan's fascinating social history brings to life the world of the freak show and explores the culture that nurtured and, later, abandoned it. In uncovering this neglected chapter of show business, he describes in detail the flimflam artistry behind the shows, the promoters and the audiences, and the gradual evolution of public opinion from awe to embarrassment. Freaks were not born, Bogdan reveals; they were manufactured by the amusement world, usually with the active participation of the freaks themselves. Many of the "human curiosities" found fame and fortune, becoming the celebrities of their time, until the ascent of professional medicine transformed them from marvels into pathological specimans.

I read this book and I will probably read it again. The subject is handled with respect - I appreciated that. Sure - it could have more pictures and maybe more "gossipy stuff - like the tall man who ran way with the fat lady behind the lion tamer's back, etc" = but I still found every page had something for me.

I loved every page of this book. It gave me the most in depth information on the development of the side show and the expoitation of human beings. Also was included little known personal information on some of my favorite oddities. A very intelligent read.
history of the sideshows.......2002-01-02
This book is a book that tells you about the ins and outs of how the freakshows started and profited. I had no idea that it was a social book. I thought that it would be a a book about "freaks". I was wrong. It is a good book though. I enjoy reading about oddities and liked learning about how they were brought about into the public eye. It's worth taking a look at.
A great introduction to the sociology of deviance.......1999-11-16
I have been using Freak Show in my Introduction to Sociology class since it has been published. I find the book to be a great way to introduce students to a qualitative approach to the sociology of deviance. Bogdan's fresh approach to the material makes the experiences of the so-called "freaks" come alive. Discussion that ensues covers the range from the construction of disabilites, how non-white "races" were constructed as "inferior," and the way modern-day "Freak shows" live on in TV-talk shows. I have frequently cast about for a newer supplemental reading to offer my students, but have always come back to Freak Show. And for all you non-professors out there, I recommend the book as a great read!

The author did an excellent job of writing about freak shows in their historical context. Even though written as sociological qualitative research, the lay person can read and enjoy this book. I am buying it for my mother who is not involved in the world of academia. It is well written and provides the reader with an appreciation of the history. I would recommend it.

Canadian author Johnston forsakes his native Newfoundland for 1960s Toronto to tell a more urban story of growing up in the early heyday of television -- from the inside. The narrator, Henry Pendergast, child star, watching reruns of himself on tape, looks back to a time before.
'My parents, in that other life, were teachers.' Substitute teachers, that is, unable to get permanent jobs. His father, Peter, dreamed of having real time to devote to his novel; his mother, Audrey, churned out TV scripts, routinely rejected. In the evenings they all watched a black-and-white TV dubbed 'the Gillingham,' for the repairman whose frequent visits were essential to its operation. Until one day Mr. Gillingham put the picture tube back in upside down and it operated perfectly for so many years that shameless journalists, spying through windows, consumed lots of ink speculating on why Henry Pendergast had an upside down TV set in his room.
But I digress and get ahead of myself. As in many cautionary tales, the Pendergasts get their heart's desire. Audrey sells a children?s show, 'The Rumpus Room,' which becomes a smash hit, with her as the host, Miss Mary, and Henry as twin, silent, illustrative insects, Bee Good and Bee Bad. Peter goes on teaching for a while, but the money is pointless and the principle vague. Adamantly refusing to have anything to do with the show -- except watch it -- Peter labors on his novel, refusing to discuss it, much less let anyone see it.
Their lives disrupted by aggressive journalists, the Pendergasts move to a security-conscious condominium and Henry attends an uppercrust school. The condo was a compromise that pleased no one. Peter wanted to remain in their old neighborhood; Audrey wanted a secluded suburban estate. As their interests diverge, such wrangles increase. Peter digs in his heels, but Audrey, gentle, earnest, well meaning and focused, is a force of nature.
Audrey takes her work seriously. She regards TV as a powerful instrument for good or evil. 'Good TV would keep books from becoming obsolete, she said, but my father would say it was good books that would keep books from becoming obsolete.'
Eventually Henry gets a little old for the twin bees. Audrey develops a new show about the young Philo Farnsworth, the inventor of television. The network likes it, with some minor changes that remove it from the realm of truth or history, and the show becomes a cult hit, with Henry in the title role.
But if Audrey has success, her husband has all the humor - a quality that any fan of Johnston's knows is essential for a balanced life. Audrey, poor thing, has no sense of humor at all (I did wonder, from time to time, how they ever got together in the first place). Even at its most lighthearted, Peter?s humor has an edge, but as the rift grows wider, Peter's wit becomes a weapon. Audrey gets the sentiment if not the sense, but Henry's understanding inevitably becomes complicitous.
Henry has inherited his father's humor and his mother's desire for family harmony and happiness, a warring combination. He spends a lot of time in his darkened room watching the Gillingham. His understanding of his parents' motives has undergone the dissection of reflection and in this mood he feels compassion for both, as well as a more pitiless understanding.
His own life has been shaped by celebrity. Harassed by journalists, he is virtually a prisoner, with no friends and no activities outside of acting and watching television. He is also becoming a teenager and begins to envision himself as something more than Mom's protege, as something more than Philo Farnsworth, nerd hero. The story builds to a cataclysm of good intentions, rebellion and rejection.
Johnston's ('The Colony of Unrequited Dreams,' 'The Divine Ryans') funny, poignant book is a story of growing up as an icon of popular culture, who is simultaneously a lonely unselfconfident boy. It's an exploration of one man coping with his wife?s runaway success. It's a look at the early upswell of television, with its naivety and burgeoning cynicism and it's a running commentary (mostly from Peter) on mass popular culture. It's a sharp and moving novel.
Great characters.......2002-04-16
This is a compelling story of how fame affects a very nuclear family. A mother and young son start a children's television show, and when the boy becomes a teenager he stars in his own series which develops a huge cult-like fan base. It has another great father character (typical of Johnston's books) who tries to realize his own dreams. But the more nerdy mother who literally and figuratively runs the show is another unforgettable character, and a study in how good intentions can do more damage than good. And the son is realistically written as being torn between what he wants for his father, his mother and himself. The fanatic following of the family's fame is at times over the top, but the real story is what goes on inside their increasingly secluded home.

The Early Silmarillion . . ........2007-02-05
. . . continues in this, the fourth volume of "The History of Middle-Earth" series.
Christopher Tolkien, in his 12-volume "History of Middle-Earth" series presents the notes, stories, fragments, and legends of what was to eventually become "The Silmarillion" in two stages. This book is the final stage of what scholars would consider "The Early Silmarillion"; continuing on the work presented in the two volumes of "The Book of Lost Tales".
If the Tolkien fan is interested in seeing how the mind of the Master developed and progressed his stories, this volume is absolutely indispensable. It is especially interesting to compare "The Shaping of Middle-Earth" with "Morgoth's Ring" and the other volumes of what Christopher calls "The Later Silmarillion".
Once again, thanks is due to Christopher for his labor of love so that we can delve more deeply into Middle-Earth.

I feel like giving this a four for the maps and explaining of the shaping of the earth. I guess I didn't really care much about that cause I liked the evolution of the characters a lot more, but did always like to look at the maps just too get a quick visual to help picture the world that I love. The reason I did give it five stars is because I know most people like this aspect of the whole history, and you will get PLENTY OF INFO on how this world was created.
Now the part that I really liked was all of the globe type drawings, and even more I liked all of the early compressed writings in this. It's kind of funny to watch the evolution of these writings because tolkien would always start out very compessed, then when he rewrote it, it ALWAYS became longer. Then if he did manage to compress it, he would always add something new to the story, or make the tale go from stationery to grim. Then when he tried to add his new idea in like his third rewriting, it never got compressed. So what this means is that he could never completely finish these writings, but on the posotive side we could have anywhere from 3-8 versions of a single writing.
Once again, thank you christopher tolkien for taking the time to publish all of your father's writings, and equal thanks for taking the time to explain these and leave notes.
Early Notes for The Silmarillion, plus MAPS! Better than Vol III.......2005-07-31
`The Shaping of Middle-Earth' is the fourth volume of Christopher Tolkien's exegesis of his father, J.R.R. Tolkien's unpublished writings which were done before, during, and after the writing of `The Hobbit' and `The Lord of the Rings'. It is important to realize that beginning with Volume III, `The Lays of Beleriand', these volumes are prepared according to the date on which the elder Tolkien wrote the documents. That this `real world' chronology is roughly parallel to the great ages of middle earth is simply a happy coincidence.
One little niggle I have about the emphasis of `Middle Earth' in the title of both this volume and the series as a whole is that the land, middle earth, is just one part of the whole world in which this mythology is played out. It is basically a great continent, roughly similar to Eurasia in size, surrounded by a single great ocean which is, in turn, bounded by the undying lands. This fact is eminantly clear in the crude maps by Tolkien senior presented in this volume.
What is also eminantly clear in most of these fragments is the great difference in both geography and physics between our world and the world in which middle earth is embedded. There is no sun and no stars, until the stars are created by some of the `gods', the Valar, who are in turn created by `the one', Iluvatar.
The fragments in this volume are mostly early versions of the mythology which was to become the postumously published `The Silmarillion'. As such, it deals with my very favorite character outside of `The Lord of the Rings', the elven lord Feanor who, in a rough parallel to both Adam and Prometheus, disobeys the Valar based on the promptings of the ultimate bad guy in these stories, Morgoth.
Even if one buys the unique physics, cosmology, and pantheon of gods and demigods, the hardest part of this and similar writings is how to deal with Tolkien's handling of evil. How, one wonders, are eight `good' Valar duped by the ninth evil one, who is left to subvert the Valar's most favored creations, the elves, and create all sorts of mayhem in Middle Earth. Even if one introduces the arguments about `free will', one wonders how, if you posit a very real supreme being, Iluvatar (Eru), plus eight comparably powerful beings, such beings would let Morgoth get away with being the cause of all this suffering.
On a ligher note, I find this book an amazing source of poetic inspiration, even more poetic, sometimes than the overtly poetic `The Lays of Beleriand'. There are phrases and paragraphs here and there which sound like they are straight out of a song by Donoven Leitch or The Incredible String Band.
Like almost all the twelve volumes in this series, this is much more a study of fragments than a complete work. Many of the fragments rework the same material, so you find yourself reading the same story over again, in slightly different words. And yet, the power of the created world holds up through the scholarly framework. As with other volumes, there is an excellent index of names at the end of the book and the aforementioned maps are invaluable in understanding the very odd geography of this invented world.

The Shaping of Middle-Earth concentrates some part of it to actually physically describing the layout of Arda (the World) with some interesting maps drawn by Tolkien in the middle of the book. The book also includes information behind the fall of Morgoth at the end of the First Age.
