Book Description
Two years ago author and horse trainer Linda Kohanov wrote The Tao of Equus — a daring multidisciplinary exploration of the powerful spiritual, emotional, and psychological connections between people and horses. Its provocative narrative, blending her story of prescient dreams and ancestral communication with a wide-ranging exploration of equine-facilitated therapy practices, created a worldwide demand for her workshops and lectures. She also received more than 1,000 letters from readers around the world describing their own strange and wonderful experiences with horses. In Riding Between the Worlds, Kohanov continues sharing the story of her own journey of healing and transformation and further develops the ideas introduced in The Tao of Equus, bolstering her groundbreaking theories with anecdotal evidence. Where her previous book laid the theoretical groundwork for expanding our emotional, mental, and spiritual view of horses, Riding Between the Worlds concentrates on the extraordinary stories that support this view.
Customer Reviews:
Riding Between Worlds.......2007-10-09
Though overall this book is too "new age" for my taste, I believe Ms. Kohanov probably does a tremendous amount of good pairing horses with people and solving inner or repressed emotional conflicts at her ranch in Tucson, and in the clinics she presents. I found the examples she sited very believable for both horse and person, and truly believe horses can heal emotional wounds. I very much agree "it is never JUST a horse!" Horses reveal our deepest secrets and conflicts, they sense these before we even can give them words. I liked, and I promptly employed, the technique of telling my horses things about my life that I believe make me similar to each one. The horse always listens, and the verbalization is good for both. This book adds understanding to our relationship with horses by making the reader more aware of what the horse "knows" or senses immediately about us, and thus makes us more open to the horse.
A Ride You Won't Forget.......2007-09-18
When I saw the beautiful cover of this book, and the intriguing title, I couldn't wait to read it. It promised mysteries and a wild ride into the unknown. Actually, the riding is transformative. The author overcomes a destructive marriage to find her way back to life through her interactions with some very wonderful, talented, compassionate and truly honest animals. A lifetime of fascination with, and interaction with horses leads her into an astonishing field of work, using members of her herd as therapy animals, in the treatment of trauma victims and people with emotional problems.
There is so much to this book that resonates, for anyone who has ever ridden a horse, or wanted to, or just enjoys watching them. Some of the stories are just inspirational. There is a wonderful section in which her beloved mare, Rasa, prematurely foals, and a community of helpers keep the young horse warm with body heat and take turns milking his dam so he can nurse. What a fantastic story.
Some of the horses are stories themselves. There's Noche, the abused horse, who is tender and kind with abuse victims. There is Merlin, a disturbed stallion, who finds love. There is Rasa, a powerful empath and spiritual guide.
I kept waiting for the book to turn New Age-y, but it's not preachy at all. This is one woman's journey that touches and heals. I won't look at horses the same way again.
Better than her first book.......2007-01-11
Linda's second book is easier to read and has more examples of horse-human interaction. I have recommended it even to my non-horsey friends. It has definitely changed my own approach to my equine friends.
A very important book for anyone who loves horses. Empath energy........2007-01-06
This book changed how I relate to my horse, even after a lifetime of being around horses. One of the best horse books I've ever read, yet it goes far beyond just relating to horses. Give this book to all your best friends.
Captivating.......2006-09-20
"Riding Between The Worlds" is an excellent account of the physical, spiritual, metaphysical and emotional connection between humans and horses. I found the metaphysical explanations to be the most helpful and know that I'll keep this book close to me as an inspiration and a reference guide.
Linda's writing style is understandable and captivating. She's able to succinctly put into words what so many other writers in her field have alluded -- yet been unable to describe. Linda's book is a great achievement -- the best book that I've read in the field of understanding horse - human relationships.
Customer Reviews:
Mr. Irving, have you ever considered writing a cook book?.......2006-04-04
Have you ever heard how an artist has a particular strength and weakness? For example, being able to draw really good faces, but not-so-good hands or feet? I feel that Ian Irving is like that -- he writes a good, entertaining read (obviously, since I am going through book #4), but his "weakness" is character development, particularly romances. I know romance plays a pretty prominent role in most fantasy and sci-fi books, but this is not Irving's strong point. The romances seem shallow, improbable, and rushed. I had a hard time enjoying the story because of them. But as other readers have mentioned, there is "something" about the books that make you coming back for more.
So what is Irving's strong point? Food descriptions -- pay attention to every meal mentioned in the books. You will learn the texture of cheese, the ripeness of fruit, the grains in every bread mentioned, etc., etc. It's almost humorous how much detail goes into food, but not character development.
If I had any advice to give, it would be for Irving to to write a cookbook, or perhaps a Zagats review or two. I'm sure they would be captivating, and right up his alley.
from my memory..........2005-06-18
i read this series a long time ago... when i a stupid teenager ((maybe 14? 13??!! 12 maybe 0.o?? i duno really T___T)) and i am seriosuly considering (now that ive matured somewhat) to reading the whole series again... from my understanding and memories... i found it very vivid in the first couple of books... he explained the evironment really well... and i can remember the university quite vivdly! when he burned all the manuscripts in the begining book... (cant beleive i rememeber any of this its been soo long) and after ive finished the tawny man series by robin hobb... ill probably read this series again... maturity changes everything...
truly inspiring stuff.......2003-12-08
I love this series. Why? Because it is a truly thoughtful and thought provoking epic. Wonderfully absent are the hollow minor characters and largely irrelevant plot twists that so plague the masses of fantasy tales available. From page 1, through 4 volumes to the paragraph, a masterful story is being told. Unlike so many authors, Irvine uses subplots to enrich and enhance the events and characters of the main story, rather than simply as a diversion from it, poorly tied together. And, refreshingly, these worlds explored are lovingly crafted in immense detail, and the history, evolution and cultures of these worlds are as interesting as the story itself, rather than functioning simply as an arena for the action. To lovers of fantasy, i strongly recommend this series. If you don't yet love the fantasy genre, put these books first on your list.
great series.......2003-12-04
As a reader of a lot of fantasy books I am rarely really really excited about a series (re-reading of the lord of the rings not withstanding) but this one definately had me mentally salivating as i turned the pages. This book especially, as it is not only the culmination of what is a masterfully crafted adventure set in beautiful worlds, but the episode in which all the intrigues and the gathering tensions of the first three books are unleashed in riveting chaos on the grandest scale of them all. No mere death of a hero hangs in the balance for Ian Irvine, who is satisfied only when all the three worlds are at risk simultaneously from within and without, all the characters in mortal peril, and not a shred of hope to be found anywhere. What sets these books and these characters apart from the humdrum concepts on which almost all fantasies are based is that there is no good and no evil forces here. In the final installment even the blackhearted Rulke, scourge of almost all the other characters and public enemy number 1 of Santhenar is revealed to be as complex, fallible, and ultimately understandable as all the others. These are worlds, like ours, where good and evil are matters of perspective, and both sides and motivations of the characters are explored, leaving them more detailed, rounded and engaging than any you are likely to see elsewhere. This series definately stands out amongst a sea of generic titles, not only because of its scale and the original flair with which the standard fantasy cliches are avoided but because of the love and work that were obviously put into what is much more than just a set of four books.
awesome read.......2003-08-06
this is an amazing book filled with suspense and adventure i recommend this to any one who enjoys sci fi

Rationalizes Genocide Because of New World Food "Discoveries".......2007-09-27
There is nothing about cuisine in this book that has not already been written about before in other publications. The author re-hashes New World foods, which already are widely known. For over 500 years it was common knowledge that maize, manioc, tomatoes, potatoes and corn were "Discoverd" by Columbus. The author of this book acts as though he is the first person to ever realize this. Everything in the book is old news - and I don't think it is worth the price of the book - even used, to purchase information that is already widely disseminated for the last 500 years.
I am uncomfortable with the authors preface introduction to this book which blithely glides over the genocide, horrific oppression of indigenious peoples - the author rationalizes it and justifies it because "Columbus is responsible for discovering all these wonderful New World foods". The author posits that the genocide against indigenous people of the Americas was justified, because the diet of Western culture was improved. I don't care for the authors smug and self congratulatory tone which rationalizes and justifies genocide against indigenous people all so he can enjoy a wider selection of foods and cuisine.
In the preface introduction, the author makes racist statetments about Muslims in Spain - alleging they are "notorious Anti-Semites." It is a historical fact that in medieval Muslim Spain, the Moors made a point of practicing religious tolerance and Christans AND Jews were given freedom of religion during the Moors rule of Spain. The author is clearly racist agains Muslims and historically innacurate - you can confirm my statement that Muslims in Moorish Spain practiced considerable religious tolerance both towards Christains and Muslims for the several hundred years the Muslims ruled Spain. Check this out in any history book or Wikkipedia.
Moors did not destroy synagogues in Muslim Spain - it was the Vatican, Catholic Church that created the Spanish Inquistion - in fact, the Vatican Catholic Church instigated horrendous persecution against BOTH Muslims and Jews. At that point in time, around 1492 - there was actually quite a bit of solidarity and feelings of alliance between Muslims and Jews who were BOTH expelled from Spain by the Catholic Church!
How the author managed to ignore this historical fact and publish rubbish against Muslims is beyond my comprehension. The author plays fast and loose with historical facts.
Anyone with a high school education and basic knowledge of history understands that anti-semitism in Spain began with the Fall of the Caliphate of Alhambra in 1492. When the Moors/Muslims lost rule of Spain, the Catholic Church in collusion with the crypto-facist Spanish Royal Crown began the anti-semetic diaspora which enforced an edict expelling Muslims and Jews from Catholic Spain.
And just for the record - I was raised Catholic so please don't think I am trying to "bash" the Vatican - my sole intent is purely to set the record straight and post historical accuracy which documents the author of this book lies and fudges about historical facts.
There are dozens of other books which all wrote about the cuisine of the New World and all the new foods which resulted in the improvement of Europeans diet. This book just re-hashes information already previously published in a plethora of books over the last 500 years. I wouldn't waste your money on this book. You can read the introduction online on the Amazon site and you can see for yourself the racist tone of the author that justifies genocide against indiegenous people and the racist remark the author makes against Moslems.
If you want to read truly fantastic book about cuisine - please read Michael Pollans book "The Omnivores Dilmena" it is an incredible book and much better written than this book. I wanted to end my review with something POSITIVE and a constructive recommendation for "foodies" and folks who are interested in the history of cuisine.
Cuisine for the Mind.......2003-09-23
One cannot help but be impressed by the prodigious research that preceeded this book. As in his other works, the author travels at a steady pace, casually informing and experiencing and reporting as he goes.
The premise offered here is quite revolutionary: Namely, that it was Spain, through its colonization in the New World and particularly Mexico, initiated a culinary melting pot that has been bubbling ever faster since Columbus's voyages. At first, the idea sounds preposterous but the evidence is overwhelming. He shows that many "African" foods were orginially New World foods, that the chili we associate with Thai, Indian and Korean cooking had its origins in colonial Mexico. The latter also provided chocolate, corn, the tomato, various fruits and another colony (Peru) gave us the potato.
He goes on to demonstrate that French, Italian, Spanish, German and the other national European cuisines are rather recent inventions. The tomato plays an exceptionally large role in the world of food and this despite the tirades and "scientific" arguments against it well into the 19th century. Spanish food affected South America which affected Africa. Some foods, paprika for example, traveled a circuitous route - from Brazil to Iran to the Arab lands to Europe. Thus, the underbelly of Europe - Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia - to this day use the stuff in huge amounts.
Final chapters covered "American" food, what the term really meant and what our future portends. Especially endearing were the tales of lonely innovators, scientists, industrialists and plain folk who - through sheer ingenuity and curiousity - added to the pleasure of mankind.
Food History Detective.......2003-09-06
Sokolov does a splenid job of tracking down the world cuisines and how they came to be what they are today.
The event that backed most of today's eating habits was the world exploration and development by the Portuguese and Spaniards. From Mexico to the Americas, from South America to Mexico and the Caribbean, they served as the carriers of exotic foodstuffs to the far corners of the earth and then back again.
Potato to tomato, chocolate to manioc, the gourmet ingredients are traced out from their roots to adaptation.
Nouvelle cuisine and american regional cooking are essayed as to their development.
Great reading to shed light on how Chinese had originally no hot spices to why Italians had no pasta.
Enlightening and entertaining for the interested reader.
Much food for thought.......2001-01-16
It is a shame that this book has been let go out of print. Someone ought to get to Penguin or Dover and ask them to bring it back to availability. The text is fascinating, and, rather like good science fiction, makes you stop and rethink your assumptions about "the way things are." Our assumptions that the food on today's tables and menus has always been much the same are fascinatingly wrong. The authors treats several places in both the "new" and "old" worlds as to the effect of ingredients imported after 1492, and then looks in more detail at several of the seminal products, such as corn and potatoes. Particularly if you like "ethnic" cuisine, you will never look at a recipe or menu in the same way again.
very readable, entertaining and authoritative.......1998-01-13
This is a very readable and entertaining history of the revolution in cuisine with the introduction
of foods from the New World. It includes some marginal political history necessary to
understand the subject, but is filled with interesting anecdotes. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the evolution of cuisine or just a good read.

Innovative Book.......2001-07-30
I've read this book for the first time thanks to one my friend who had buy it from Amazon just for curiosity; it's well written (I'm an English Litterature teacher), really interesting is the point of view of the author, he consider the Dandysm, Romanticism and Decadent Age like an evolution of the Glamish movement of the so called 'Dark Heroes' a la Oscar Wilde. I like also same features like excerpts from books and recital works that makes the work really apart from the other books dedicated to the same arguent. Really interesting.
