    Book Description

Edges of Empire focuses on the intersection between modernization, modernism, and Orientalism. It is a timely reassessment of the history and legacy of Orientalist art and visual culture. The essays in this volume explore the connections and cross-fertilizations that occur across cultural boundaries via the analysis of Ottoman and North African art practices, as well as the visual culture of European Orientalism. Contested identities and new definitions of self are highlighted in relation to topics as diverse as nineteenth-century monuments to empire, cultural cross-dressing, performance and display at the international exhibitions, and contemporary museological practice. This is a groundbreaking anthology that will be of great interest to scholars and students of art history, architecture, museum studies, and cultural and postcolonial studies.

5 out of 5 stars Creative mix of stories for a variety of sexual preferences.......2006-09-13

I picked this up when flipping through the index of authors and spotted Radclyffe whose prose is always enjoyable - and this short story has to be the hottest I have ever read by her. Not to be missed!

There are quite a few fun stories (32 in all) including those by Rachel Kramer Bussel, Jay Starre, Kristina Wright, Lynne Jamneck and Alison Tyler.

5 out of 5 stars Intro to Undies.......2006-08-16

This was a great way for me to introduce my pecadillos to my lover in an approachable manner. It also spiced up our love life! Very titilating on its own too! I highly recommend it for both those who are new to this "genre" or otherwise well-versed.

    5 out of 5 stars Deliciously Erotic.......2006-08-07

I'm very new to the Erotic stories, but an avid read of Rachel's fabulously titilating Lusty Lady column in the Village Voice. So, I bought her books. Can I tell you..these stories are sooo exciting, and deliciously erousing that I've started to day dream about them while at work, on the way home from work, while washing the dishing, and especially at night.

    5 out of 5 stars Painfully hot.......2006-08-07

As a veteran of Rachel Kramer Bussel's In the Flesh Reading series, I have to say her anthologies are just as smoking. Good work!

    5 out of 5 stars what a fun read!.......2006-07-19

I can't begin to tell you what fun this book is! I've read Rachel Kramer Bussel's work before, and she did a fantastic job editing these wonderfully creative stories. All the writers have a different quality about them. In short, I was immediately engaged by the first story.

Even if you don't have an undies fetish per se, this is still a must-read! It's not only funny and smart, it has an undertone of very touching elements. But, if you do indulge in a panties fetish then this book is totally for you! Whether you're into tightie whities or lacy underwear, this book has everything covered, and then some.

If reading outside of the box interests you, then what are you waiting for? Check out Ultimate Undies!

2 out of 5 stars Don't Listen to the Abridged Version.......2007-08-19

The abridged audio book is terrible. Loretta Swit's reading is awful - especially the southern accents. It was hard to listen to. I am giving it 2 stars, because I can only hope that the book is so much better and fills in all the big gaps. Why Cassidy ever found Claire attractive is not apparent in the audio version. She always is lying to him. What is attractive about that? I like Sandra Brown's books, but will only listen to unabridged versions in the future. (This one did not come in an unabridged version - that I could find...) Also no more with Loretta Swit as the reader.

4 out of 5 stars Murder and mayhem in the Big Easy.......2006-11-15

Charismatic televangelist Jackson Wilde has targeted Claire Laurent and her lingerie catalog as tools of the devil. When Wilde turns up dead, Claire is the prime suspect, much to New Orleans District Attorney Robert Cassidy's plight, as he's falling for the alluring woman who just might be a murderer. This is foreign territory for a tough as nail prosecutor who never mixes business with pleasure.

While it looks like Claire might have done it (and she's without an alibi), there are a host of others out there with motive to kill not so squeaky clean preacher, including his latest wife and son, who are having a hot affair. But as Robert uncovers yet another lie that Claire has told him, will be able to forgive her?

Featuring a spunky heroine with a backbone, sexy hero, plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing and lots of steamy love scenes, this is Brown at the top of her game, and one of her most sensual and enduring stories. A definite must read!

    5 out of 5 stars French Silk.......2006-09-17

Reading this book was almost like watching chocolate pour over a wide expanse, it was smooth reading and very attention grabbing.

    5 out of 5 stars What A Story!.......2006-06-15

I am not really a romance/mystery reader, but I was bored and thought I'd give it a whirl. I usually like the drama-filled stories. I can now say that I have been inducted into the reading world of romance/mystery with thanks to Sandra Brown. This was the most exciting, well-written suspense novel I have ever read. I thought I had it figured out well before the middle of the book. But as I neared the end, all of my instincts were snuffed out, considering how I'm a pretty good judge of character. If you're looking for a good suspense, this will satisfy your search.

    5 out of 5 stars A real page turner..........2006-06-08

Talk about suspense! Just when you think you know "whodoneit," another suspect comes to mind. This is a real page turner with strong characters who are well defined. I enjoy Ms. Brown's books and this is one of her earlier ones, but absolutely worth purchasing and reading. I could not put it down.

    Book Description

Ever consider what the beast really wanted with his young Beauty? Find out in this collection of wittily reimagined fairy tales for a strictly adult audience.

In the title story, a haughty princess parades in front of her people and ends up showing off far more than her leadership skills. A modern-day Cinderella attends the palace ball in a pair of black patent-leather stiletto heels guaranteed to bring the foot-worshiping prince to his knees. The seven dwarves prove that what they lack in size they more than make up for in numbers; young Jackie learns more about pleasure from a beanstalk than she ever thought possible; and Goldie realizes that nothing is too hot when she sets about finding out which of three “bare” bachelors is neither too big nor too small, but just right.

Little Red Riding Hood, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Sleeping Beauty–the erotic potential of these classic fairy tales and more is finally and fully realized in Hillary Rollins’s entertaining and titillating collection of bedtime stories for grown-ups. If you ever have trouble falling asleep, or if you want to get your partner in the mood to call it a day, try snuggling under the covers with these beautifully written and erotically self-assured tales from the annals of childhood. Better yet, read them aloud. There are few pleasures greater than sharing a good story with someone you love.

1 out of 5 stars What is this cr*p?.......2003-12-07

THE EMPRESS'S NEW LINGERIE is basically nothing more than soft-core pornography trying to pass itself off as erotic literature. The stories are basically either perverted or updated versions of favorite fairy tales, but with a sexual twist. Most of the stories are also told from a female point of view. In this collection, Snow White becomes a gang-banging whore as she services all seven of the dwarfs at one time; Jack from the tale about the beanstalk is instead a female and finds that the magic beans raise a giant instead of a plant; Cinderella's Prince Charming has a foot fetish; the miller's daughter in Rumplestilskin has a thing for bondage; etcetera. Most of the writing is poor, reading more like a PEOPLE or COSMO magazine than anything else and when the stories could turn interesting, the writing stoops to the level of soft-core pornography. I don't recommend anyone reading this book, let alone buying it.

    1 out of 5 stars Great Disappointment.......2003-06-19

I was very excited when I bought this book. As soon as I started reading it I discovered what a huge disappointment it was. The stories were lame and unsexy. Save yourself a buck. Don't bother reading this book.

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointing silliness.......2002-06-13

Not much of merit or originality to be found here, I'm afraid. The stories in this collection are the stuff of sex-aid writing, real one-handers -- and the writing itself tends to be on the hackneyed side. I tried to stick with it to the bitter end, looking for a jewel here and there, but only ended up disappointed. Definitely not worth keeping on the bookshelf. I think I'll stick with the original 'Erotic Fairy Tales, A Romp through the Classics' by Mitzi Szereto.

    1 out of 5 stars Not impressed........2002-05-17

Frankly, I found this a waste of time and money. It looks like something an amateur who bought a book on how to write erotica might have written -- except she didn't get it right. Actually, the whole book is rather amateurish, if not downright silly. It seems like it was written very quickly, as if there was some reason to hurry up and get it into the stores. Talk about trying to ride on someone else's coat-tails! I agree with one aspect of the Library Journal review posted here -- it's strictly for one-handers.

      Book Description

What do the thousands of images of bras and panties on perfectly sculpted bodies that we see spread across billboards and magazines say about our society? Many women indulge in lingerie to please men. Yet, since Antiquity, women have always kept lingerie hidden away under outer garments. Thus, lingerie must be more than erotic bait. Authors Muriel Barbier and Shazia Boucher have researched iconography to explore the relationship of lingerie to society, the economy and the corridors of intimacy. They correlate lingerie with emancipation, querying whether it asserts newfound freedoms or simply adjusts to conform to changing social values. The result is a rigorous scientific rationale spiced with a zestly humour. And the tinier lingerie gets, the more scholarly attention the authors believe it deserves.

3 out of 5 stars OK, Good, but not great.......2005-08-04

I read the back of this book and thought that it would be really great. Usually I am a good judge when it comes to that. But boy was I wrong about this one. The writer needed to take more time and deepen her characters. The main thing I hate about certain women writers is that they do a "STEREOTYPICAL" gay guy. I am an avid reader of gay male fiction and none of the characters in those novels are anything like the ones written in Chick Lit. She also greatly underestimates the intelligence of her reader. There is a part in the book where the manufactuer sends some bathrobes to the lingere store where Moxie works. In it was a note that said there was a mistake on the tags. The S was actually an XS the M and S and the L a M. That is not at all complicated for a compentent adult to figure out. The writer has Moxie be confused by this for a few minutes. Why would anyone who went to college and then to graduate school have any problem with those instructions? They wouldnt. And her jokes are not at all funny. They are trying to hard to be witty. She is not dry enough with her sarcasm. The book only got better right when it was about to end. Right as I was starting to enjoy it, it was over. I was so disappointed. I do NOT reccomend this book. But I do reccomend that you pick up SOMETHING BORROWED and SOMETHING BLUE. Both by EMILY GIFFIN. I loved these. Couldnt put them down. I finished each in a day.

      5 out of 5 stars wicked pissa.......2005-05-31

      1 out of 5 stars Terrible.......2005-05-28

I picked this book based on the adorable cover and was sorely disappointed. The story line went nowhere and the characters were cardboard cutouts and stick figures. Disappointed with the latest Avon offerings and this one is no different. Don't waste your money.

4 out of 5 stars very humorous chick lit Bostonian joyride.......2005-04-06

Rebecca "Moxie" Brecker tried teaching science to middle school students, but while she remained in a state of rest her pupils seem to be in a perpetual state that proves sexual energy never vanishes only changes form. Unable to deal with the fifth state of matter (teenagers), Moxie quits the classroom to work at the local lingerie chain store. She still feels tired.

Moxie is attracted to her new Combat Zone neighbor Steven Tyler who receives a lot of packages from fans confusing him with that singer-father of the actresses. Though he is friendly he never seems to move beyond showing her his latest "gift"; Moxie wonders if he sells drugs. Moxie is dragging from dealing with cups and serial underwear thieves so is unable to follow up with the ringless hunk that came in to buy lingerie. Her shrink insists her fatigue is psychosomatic, but when Moxie finally gets tested, she learns that she must deal with a physical disease not mental burnout. While her only friend Gerald freaks out over James Spader, Steven tries to persuade Moxie that she is his foxy.

Although the story line contains a serious subplot involving health, the well being of this story line centers on the heroine's amusing asides. Steven is a delightful support character trying to convince Moxie that he is not a dealer and that he wants her; Gerald enables the audience to see deeper inside Moxie. Although the numerous subplots tie together, they can leave a reader weary trying to follow yet Eugenie Seifer Olson provides a very humorous chick lit Bostonian joyride.

        Book Description

The world's bestselling novelist is back with Secrets, a steamy novel chronicling the rise of a lingerie chain. Jerry Cooper of The Predators is back to launch his new empire of intimate women's apparel. He now has a son, Les Cooper, a streetwise young lawyer who slowly uncovers the family's mob involvement, a secret which Jerry has desperately tried to conceal until he finds himself in need of a lawyer. Combining the grit of his early work with the glamour of his later novels, Robbins once again provides readers with a pantheon of street-raised hustlers and anti-heroes who would use their hard-won knowledge to claw their way up the ladder of success.

        Customer Reviews:

        1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2004-10-23

Before I picked up this book I knew that it was written by a ghost writer, posthumously. But since it was a "sequel" I wanted to get it anyway. What a waste of time! It is obvious that Harold Robbins had jotted down some notes and ideas and someone with no talent whatsoever had tried to make it into a novel. It is fairly clear to distinguish some of the passages that are Robbins' and then there are those that he would be ashamed to even look at. There is actually a part where the same sentence is repeated, with two words changed, on the next page. The intensity of characters, the eroticism, the storytelling that are so evident in most of Robbins' work is nowhere to be found in The Secret.

4 out of 5 stars Not too bad a legacy.......2001-07-26

This one is more like Harold the Storyteller. Some of his more recent work has been as much about sex as it has been about character development-and some rather debased sex at that. Which was a shame-over his long career, Harold Robbins has created some of the most interesting and sympathetic characters I have ever encountered in fiction. Film industry pioneers. Union leaders. South American revolutionaries. Young prizefighters. Auto industry pioneers. You name it. This one is the sequel to "The Predators", the story of a lingerie industry magnate (??) and it's two novels in one-a father and his son. It switches back and forth between the two men in the way Evan Hunter's "Sons" did with three generations of American fighting men. There's one small flaw in this book which is more amusing than off-putting-in the early stages of father Jerry Cooper's setting up the undie company, he has to deal with some mob types, and I'm afraid Harold Robbins is no Mario Puzo there. You get a family with the name Boiardo and of course the head of the family is called "Chef". They have a cousin named Napolitano and everybody calls him "Ice Cream". Otherwise, this is a pretty decent book. Part of Cooper & Son's business dealings involve a subsidiary in Hong Kong around the time of the "Handover" to China (coincidently, I just finished a Stephen Coonts book set there at that time). Being that clothing is involved, the issue of sweat shop labor comes up. This is hardly a landmark book for Robbins, but it's more consistent with why I was one of his steady readers for decades. What a relief-I thought he was totally losing it. At least he goes out with something readable. Gonna miss ya, old timer.

1 out of 5 stars Missed The Boat!!!!.......2001-03-21

I was extremely disappointed in this book. I kept waiting for something to happen besides "scanties", than technology came into play, but the storyline was so boring and nothing worth reading about happened.

        2 out of 5 stars Repetative.......2001-01-30

This is the first book I can remember reading by this author so perhaps he's a better author than this book leads me to believe. I became interested right from the beginning and found him to be a good storyteller but mid-way through the book, I became disapointed with the repetition. Too much talk about women in their scanties. The ending left very much to be desired. In short, came out of the gates well but had no stamina.

1 out of 5 stars Let the dead stay dead.......2000-04-29

One of the best books I ever read was A Stone for Danny Fisher by Harold Robbins. Great characters and a great story. I think I've read that book 5 times over the years.

The Secret - should have been kept a secret. No plot - no story except sex. Characterization not too shabby - but nothing extraordinary

Leave Harold Robbins alone. These are notes that someone embellished and is trying to characterize as Robbins'. Let the dead stay dead.

            Book Description

Set against backgrounds of the British coast and London, and ranging from the 1920s to the present day, here are ten stories from the pen of the incomparable Catherine Cookson.

In these compelling tales we discover once again the magical storytelling ability that has made Catherine Cookson one of the world’s most popular writers. A husband is forced to re-examine his family relationships; life behind the scenes in a department store is revealed; friendship blossoms in the London Underground during the Blitz. And in an ambitious set of three stories, Cookson traces the changes she has witnessed during her life in the way we view marriage and pregnancy.
