Book Description

"Customers are the heart of any business. But we can't succeed if we develop only one talk addressed to the 'average customer.' Instead we must know each customer and build our individual engagements with that knowledge. If Customer Relationship Management (CRM) is going to work, it calls for skills in Customer Data Integration (CDI). This is the best book that I have seen on the subject. Jill Dyché is to be complimented for her thoroughness in interviewing executives and presenting CDI."
-Philip Kotler, S. C. Johnson

Distinguished Professor of International Marketing Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University

"In this world of killer competition, hanging on to existing customers is critical to survival. Jill Dyché's new book makes that job a lot easier than it has been."
-Jack Trout, author, Differentiate or Die

"Jill and Evan have not only written the definitive work on Customer Data Integration, they've made the business case for it. This book offers sound advice to business people in search of innovative ways to bring data together about customers-their most important asset-while at the same time giving IT some practical tips for implementing CDI and MDM the right way."

-Wayne Eckerson, The Data Warehousing Institute author of Performance Dashboards: Measuring, Monitoring, and Managing Your Business

Whatever business you're in, you're ultimately in the customer business. No matter what your product, customers pay the bills. But the strategic importance of customer relationships hasn't brought companies much closer to a single, authoritative view of their customers. Written from both business and technicalperspectives, Customer Data Integration shows companies how to deliver an accurate, holistic, and long-term understanding of their customers through CDI.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CDI Resource.......2007-03-15

As with her past books, Jill once again takes a "hot" subject - in this case, customer data integration - and addresses the questions "Why do I need to care?" and "How does this impact my business?" The book is for anyone (functional and technical) who wants a practical understanding of CDI, i.e., its relation to other data management issues and what it looks like and how it plays out in the "real world." As can be expected from Jill, the book includes plenty of case studies and examples so that readers can learn how others are succeeding (or not) in this arena.

The book is easy and enjoyable to read - it's like having Jill and Evan sitting right beside you having a discussion on a topic they are very passionate about. The book is complete with diagrams, assessment questions and manager do's and don't's lists at the end of each chapter. These tools are extremely helpful for folks like me. As a software vendor who needs to understand the implications of data integration, this is a must-have book in my business library.

5 out of 5 stars Great "how-to" for novices!.......2007-03-13

One of the strengths of this book is the author's ability to tie new
technology issues to real world examples. Dyche and Levy deliver a clear
and straight forward description of master data management and customer data
integration without getting caught up with esoteric terminology or the
academics of technology. They focus on providing me with details that can
help me (and others) understand the complexities and benefits of CDI in
business.

5 out of 5 stars Like the case studies!.......2007-03-13

This book is perfect for the person that wants to learn the practical aspects of customer data integration. It's clear from the book's numerous case studies (more than 10) that the authors have spent the time and energy researching what companies REALLY do when it comes to implementing master data management in the customer data integration space. There are many places to read about an academic approach to this topic -- this book provides a refreshing, real world perspective of how CDI works and how real companies use this new technology.

5 out of 5 stars Good book to read and learn.......2007-03-12

I got this book from my account rep, who told me to read the chapter on Data Governance ("Who Owns the Data, Anyway?") While my company is still trying to figure out how to tackle the problem of "harmonizing" our consumer data, I was particularly interested in the chapters that explained why, with MDM and CDI, the formalized management of the data has got to be tackled now!
The book provides great tips for putting data governance in place. It also makes the point that execution capabilities for implementing data governance policies and rules are key-an important lesson for me and my staff.

I also liked the "What Managers Should Know" sections at the end of every chapter-the book did a good job of "cherry picking" the important points for executives like me who need quick value summaries. And, as the other reviewers have mentioned, the dozen or so case studies really paint a picture of how this stuff is really employed by successful companies.

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly informative and helpful.......2007-03-11

I enjoyed reading this book. It provides a great background on why, though we have been trying to solve these problems for a long time through data modeling, CDI and MDM solutions are new and different from other technologies we have in-house.

Chapter 5 discusses an implementation metholology very specific to CDI, and Chapter 9 explains the team structure necessary to develop a CDI solution. It combines exactly the right level of management discussion with practitioner advice.

We are currently evaluating MDM vendors and my boss gave me this book to help me, as the book says, "make the internal pitch" for CDI. I work for a health care products company and we need to understand and match our vendors/customers/distributors. Customer Data Integration will help me and my team make the right business case!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Don't leave home without it.!.......2007-05-01

This book has instantly become one of the two most important documents I take to the field. Once I have determined my position and orientation using a plenisphere there is nothing I can't know about any part of the sky. It's heavy, and bulky to hold (I take a collapsible table when observing) but there is nothing like having the complete data at your fingertips. Spiral bound lays flat. I thought that was a cute idea when I bought it. Now I know how important it is. Lamination is also critical to have as the first night out with the "free" charts I printed from my computer they were ruined.

This is the master reference to take to the observing site. I reiterate, "Don't leave home without it."

5 out of 5 stars laminated deluxe version.......2007-02-27

the unlaminated deluxe is great, easy to mark btw. but the laminated deluxe is simply fabulous. the size(21 by 16 inches, maps are not folded), the top-binding make the atlas much less clumsy to handle and the spiral-binding really makes sense. also the chart key is in the front. make sure you take a look of both before making your purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2006-11-10

This Atlas is fantastic ... very large but the scale s so large it gives you and excellent idea of what one can see.

4 out of 5 stars Very good but not quite perfect.......2006-08-12

For years the Sky Atlas 2000.0 has been the most popular atlas step up from a 6th magnitude atlas. The 8th magnitude limit is deep enough to enable users to find Neptune and the brighter asteroids. The large charts, while they can be a bit awkward to handle, are great to view, as they show wide swaths of sky.

The Second Edition brought some significant improvements: a useful step up to magnitude 8.5, galaxy shapes which show size and orientation, better representation of star magnitude, detailed charts of the Orion region and Virgo Galaxy Cluster. If you are debating between a used First Edition and a new Second Edition, get the Second; it's worth the extra money.

A few shortcomings remain. The charts are arranged in ascending order of right ascension. This presents problems with editions which are bound on the left side. When users reach the right edge of the chart, they have to stifle the instinct to continue right to the next page, force themselves to reverse direction, and turn--of all places--to the previous page instead. The same with the left edge. Charts should be ordered in descending RA like Uranometria or Millennium. Ordering by ascending RA is a pointless tradition.

Some of the versions are bound at the top, which solves the problem of the chart sequence--and makes the book less floppy to handle--but makes it harder to search for charts. Since the chart number is at the top right, the user cannot see what page they have their fingers on until the book is completely open.

The pages of the laminated versions are very sturdy for field use but hard to grasp and separate, especially when moist with dew. This and the previous problem could be solved by adding numbered, graspable tabs to the bottom of each chart.

A badly-needed improvement to the atlas came in a subsequent printing of the second edition: around the edges of each chart are noted the numbers of the charts which adjoin it. This greatly simplifies navigation through the atlas. It would be good to take this measure a step further and, on each chart, mark adjacent chart borders as well to save guesswork as to where each one ends and the next begins.

The many virtues of this atlas have been amply documented by other reviewers. The space I have spent on the shortcomings is simply an attempt to round out the picture. The many improvements already made to this work speak well of the publisher's commitment to an excellent atlas. The Sky 2000.0 is now only a couple steps short.

So which atlas to choose for your observations? I would completely ignore the 6th magnitude atlases on the market. For a beginning to intermediate observer, the magnitude 7.6 Pocket Sky Atlas is very well designed and affordable. For intermediate observing, the Sky Atlas 2000.0 is an excellent choice. For advanced observers who frequently go deep, I would suggest skipping the Sky Atlas and bringing both the Pocket and the Millennium along on outings.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent charts - but for home or field?.......2006-03-18

These are definitely the best charts I've used to date. I have the unlaminated deluxe copy spiralbound, and to have the objects color coded really helps a ton - makes it quick and easy to find stuff and even helps me orient the map faster. However, I would caution using this in the field. If you have problems with dew, definitely get either the laminated version, or buy it unlaminated and pay to have it laminated. (You may have to compare at stores where you live to figure out if it would save you much to buy unlaminated and then take it somewhere - some have said the price isn't that different, others have said they saved a lot by doing the lamination theirselves.) Another solution is to make copies of the area or constellation you want to observe, then if they get ruined or if you want to mark it to death, you can always make more copies.

You really need a good way to lay out the map in the field, like a table or something to make it easier to flip thru - definitely not for the grass and too big to just lay in a chair. Marking the constellation patterns (i.e. connect the dots) also helps, and it's convienent to do on laminated copies as you can use a dry erase or grease marker, and if you make a mistake you can fix it or even mark places for observing sessions, as they easily wipe off.

Overall.. I would most certainly recommend the deluxe spiral version (the one w/ color identification). A Great Buy!!!
Pros: color, nice big charts that show a good expanse of sky, not too detailed but more so than average charts in a book, not exceptionally heavy and easy to pack
Cons: susceptible to dew, can be awkward to flip thru w/o a table or similar prop, unlaminated

A born-again computer whiz kid bent on proving the existence of God on his computer meets a middle-aged divinity professor, Roger Lambert, who'd just as soon leave faith a mystery. Soon the computer hacker begins an affair with professor Lambert's wife -- and Roger finds himself experiencing deep longings for a trashy teenage girl.

              Customer Reviews:

              5 out of 5 stars A worthy novel from a living master.......2006-10-01

I am an avid reader of John Updike, but I sometimes have trouble relating to some of his characters.

This novel centers around the theme of faith versus science in the world of divinity professor Roger Lambert, who is aging and questioning many things these days. When confronted by a faithful computer science student who believes he can use computers to prove the existence of God. Lambert is attracted to the idea and the debate but is, ultimately, intent on discouraging or discrediting the students efforts.

As is always the case, the book is about much more than the theme. Updike captures the mood of the Reagan era, the environment of a decaying Northeastern city, and the attitudes and changes that come with aging like no other author can. This book shows, yet again, why Updike is a modern master of fiction. It is intellectual and engaging.

5 out of 5 stars Science Vs. Religion at a Harvard/Boston Like Community.........2006-04-13

Reading this finally convinced me that Mr. Updike really is a true master of the language! It seems impossible to top this as purely imaginative, yet true to life commentary on 1984-85 America, written in 1986. When a 29 year old computer Grad Student approaches Roger, the ex Methodist Divine, now Theology Prof, about a Grant which the young man hopefully pursues to prove (?) the existence of the Deity through Computer Technology, we're off to a great start in world of Academia, Theology and Scepticism, Family History, Friendships, Race Relations, Medicine, Evolutionary Science, Computer Science (hard to follow, even if dated!), City Neighborhoods of all kinds, not to mention author's usual reflections on adultery and stale marriages. Note how Mr. Updike smoothly switches between 1st and 3rd Persons, which is probably Roger's dream version of his wife's seamy escapades. The very last sentence seems strange, but throws another loop into this fine and seamless story!

5 out of 5 stars God and computers.......2005-11-30

Can the computer be used to prove God's existence? Dale Kohler, a computer scientist, attempts to find out. He goes to Roger Lambert, a professor of theology, to seek out funding for his project, and much of the novel consists of "debates" between the two men, Lambert siding with faith as the only way to know God. (There's irony here, too, and not a little bit of self-interest on Lambert's part, because he fears if Kohler succeeds he [Lambert] will be out of a job.)

All does not occur in the stratosphere of philosophical debate, however, as some very down-to-earth happenings are dealt with. It's possible that Kohler has had an affair with Roger's wife Esther, though there's no way Roger (or the reader) finds out for sure. Even when she becomes pregnant there's no way of knowing whether it's by Lambert of Kohler. Ironically, this is Roger's "by faith alone" argument coming back to haunt him.

Lambert has a brief affair of his own with the somewhat seedy Verna, who also seems to know a lot about computers (she's a friend of Kohler's). Kohler's experiment eventually fails, or at least it can't be repeated after some kind of "image" appears on his computer screen. Many people might be turned off by the depth of the argument between Lambert and Kohler as Updike makes references to the Patristic Fathers and rather technical scientific and theological points of view. But I thought that was one of the most interesting things about the book. There are also many similarities between this work and Hawthorne's THE SCARLET LETTER. In general I thought the book not as good as the Rabbit books, but among the top tier of Updike's novels.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful; Updike hitting on all cylinders.......2005-08-03

This is the first John Updike book I ever read, and it's still one of my favorites. I've since read many, many more, but this is the one that really stays with me. Even though I initially picked it up because I heard that it explored the theme of technology intersecting with theology, I quickly discovered that that was a secondary issue at best. Any disappointment I may have felt was short lived, however, as I soon became engrossed in the writing, the story, the characters, and the attention to detail. Not only does Updike masterfully capture place, time, and mood, but he uses such expressive, artful language to do it that even now, years later, I'm still able to recall whole sentences and snatches of dialogue. This book taught me that great writers go beyond using language merely to tell a story; they use it, like all great artists, to reveal underlying truths about the world and to get us to see and experience things in a new way.

5 out of 5 stars Faith in science?.......2002-11-25

I thought that this was a very enjoyable novel - indeed, shades of "Rabbit Redux". The plot centres on Roger Lambert, a Professor of Divinity, his wife Esther, his half-niece Verna, and Dale, who is convinced that he can prove the existence of God by scientific analysis.

The book is really a paean to uncertainty. Is religious faith or faith in science a sure way of explaining the meaning of life? Are human relationships as certain as we should think or wish them to be?

Updike devotes much space to a fascinating analysis of the struggle between the scientific and traditional Christian explanations of the Creation. The question arises of whether the theory of evolution has in fact become a new religion, demanding faith rather than reason, and complete with its own zealots and heretics.

Running parallel to that is Roger Lambert's own views of the lives of the other characters in the novel. And here the reader is not sure how much is real and how much is Roger's fevered imagination. Is Esther really having an affair with Dale or is it just "Roger's version" of what might have been happening?

I felt that Updike was at his challenging best in this novel - exploring many interesting themes in an entertaining way, for example the uncomfortable interaction between Roger's middle-class world and the underworld occupied by Verna is particularly disturbing, and exposes latent tensions in society.

                5 out of 5 stars Transforming.......2006-11-10

Deep and wise book, wich gently temptates to step forward and teach how to do it safely. I find working according to Nema's Maat Magick effective and interesting. I highly recommend.

4 out of 5 stars An update to an older magickal system.......2002-05-30

From what I can tell Nema has attempted to do for the Aeon of Maat, The same thing Crowley did for the Aeon of Horus, Even though I wasn't even aware that we were in the Aeon of Maat. Nonetheless the quality of this book is astounding, and very well brought together. I haven't personally had a chance to perform any of the rituals, but have a basic understanding for the Theory. The word that comes to mind when she speeks of the astral temple is enchanting, very imaginative. My only beef is that I have noticed of late that recent magick books have drifted from the artistic aspect of high magick to a more astral/imaginative area of magick. Personally my favorite part of magick has always been the beauty and complexity of the ritual garb and tools.

Many have said that nature is truly the greatest teacher, and when the time for word and thought rests in the immortal essence of the moment, her lessons come to us and may speak to us and teach us the truths of our heart as we weave through the seeming complexity of day to day life and find ourselves back in the moment, as truth disolves all illusion and love teaches us all lessons. This is the message of the ancient egyptians as it is also the nature of NEMA's book to provey this message. Nema's book is about this truth and the search for inner vission as it reaches its refinement in our day and age. And we find, that between us, this truth is ultimately much less different than the centuries before us have led us to suspect...leading us to the realization that only love could allow such chaos to exist, and only will could bind such truth. As an introduction to the magickal arts, this book provides the neophyte with a mature, well though out and researched evolving view of a "magick," as a willed mind change, which can not be confined by "tradition" but which represents the culminating flower of human compassion.
