Book Description
On the front lines of the global war on terror, CIA superagent Mitch Rapp races to save one more life: his own.
An eye for an eye: that's what the powerful father of a dead terrorist demands in retribution -- and with his hate-filled plea, Mitch Rapp becomes the target of an explosive international conspiracy. The fearless operative has both killed with impunity and tortured to avert disaster, all in a battle to preserve freedom. But even among America's allies, some believe the time has come to bring Rapp down. Now the hunter is the hunted, and Rapp must rely on his razor-sharp instincts for survival -- and justice -- as he unleashes his fury on those who have betrayed him.

"For years, Mitch Rapp's bold actions have saved the lives of countless Americans. He has killed with impunity, tortured to avert disaster, and shown he will do whatever it takes to prevent terrorists from fulfilling their bloody wishes. His battles for peace and freedom have made him a hero to many, and an enemy to countless more. In the tangled, duplicitous world of espionage, there are those, even among America's allies, who want to see Mitch Rapp eliminated. They have decided the time has come. Now, the powerful father of a dead terrorist demands vengeance in its simplest form -- an eye for an eye, and Rapp instantly becomes the target of an international conspiracy. This time, he must use all of his vigilance and determination to save himself before he can turn his fury on those who have dared to betray him. "

Republican Propaganda.......2007-09-28
This novel gets my "Razzz!" of the year award. I see all of the 5 star reviews and can only explain them by supposing that the people reading Flynn's books are looking for this particular sort of nonsense.
The hero is a HERO and a one of those bully boys for the President that take care of business that can't be left to those pinkos in Congress. If you have a loose sense of reality, and are among the 29% who still give Bush a positive approval rating (perhaps a redundant statement), this is the book for you. If not give it a miss and try some Lee Child, or the new novel "Volk's Game".
Mitch Rapp Series.......2007-09-11
Always a good read when you can follow an intriguing character through several novels. The Mitch Rapp series by Vince Flynn is the best I have read since Ludlum's early days.
1st book I read in the Mitch Rapp series. Loved it so I went and bought the rest.......2007-07-25
Enjoyed this book so much I went and bought all the Mitch Rapp series novels. Really have enjoyed going through them from the start. About to start Executive Power. I highly recommend this book and author. Do yourself a favor though and start with Transfer of Power.
Pushing all the right buttons.......2007-07-18
This is my first Mitch Rapp novel but it won[t be my last. A great story about the classic rogue CIA agent, but rogue for the good guys. And the book serves up rough justice on an assortment of bad characters, from imam apostles of hate, to inside-the-beltway paper-pushers, to amoral terrorist enablers. SPOILER ALERT. I mean, when you have the protagonist go to Saudi Arabia, strap a bomb vest on the evildoer's son, then blow up the son and the bad guy while flipping off a security camera, there isn't really anything more to do to satisfy the bloodlust of the reading audience, myself included. I only worry about one thing, which is that I share many of the geopolitical attitudes of the former East German bad guy. I hope Flynn isn't trying to tell me something.
amazing.......2007-07-01
consent to kill is one amazing book. from the beginning to the end it never slows down. i only stopped reading to work or sleep.

Book Description
Twenty five multi national corporations form an offshore political action group to subvert the American Constitution into a "corporate state." They fear partisanship and woeful incompetance in Washington and believe the people don't care. One powerful man organizes opposition to reverse the political decomposition and informs the people of the truth and reality versus the perceptions used to delude them.
Customer Reviews:
This is a great story!.......2000-07-05
Gerry Balcar has extensive experience in the corporate world as a lobbyist, entrepreneur and a corporate officer. He brings this breadth of experience to a book about an attempted corporate takeover of the federal government that will make the baby boomers squeal that they knew it all along. However, Balcar draws up two opposing corporations, sort of a good witch of the west and the evil witch who should be exterminated. Consent Of The Governed begins with the formation of POLACO, a Political Action Coalition formed with massive amounts of money from 25 of the world's largest multinational corporations all chipping in seed money of $50 million each, with the purpose of, as they put it: "The broad goal is to take greater political control. The purpose is to preserve the context in which our companies can best function in terms of fiscal, monetary, and other aspects of public policy. Our main thrust will be to get people into office who understand the world and agree with us." Based on Harbour Island in the Bahamas, POLACO's major purpose of destabilizing the American government for their own ends became readily apparent to Tony Destito, who was sent by Ian Macauliffe, CEO of PENMET, one of the most successful and well-run corporations on the DOW JONES. POLACO wants PENMET to join, and Ian's advisors quickly surmise POLACO's intent and decide to launch their own version of a presidential candidate who speaks the truth to the people, but is talented enough to withstand the pressures of modern day campaigning with such high stakes. Consent Of The Governed should be required reading in the schools. Its message of the dangers of an apathetic public exposing our democracy to takeover by clever and insidious corporations is very real. The novel itself has all the elements of a well-crafted political intrigue: murder, manipulation, mayhem and lots of sex that is kept in good context. The characters are engaging, the action never stops, and the plot thickens. Gerry Balcar exhibits his depth of experience and wisdom, with just the right mixture of affection for all the good things which make life worth living. His idealism is reflected in the "good guys and girls," and his "bad guys and girls" make the reader shudder with disbelief. This is a great story!

Let's elect Adrian Daggat.......2000-05-20
Yes, it's long, yes, it's a first novel, yes, but...
Look beyond the typical sharp-edged criticisms that keep many a fine new work from reaching the general public and find a story of committed people who truly care about democracy. These are people who put their lives and their fortunes on the line. The setting is an American presidential campaign where candidate Adrian Daggat garners the enthusiastic support of millions and millions of Americans because he dares to present truthfully the challenges facing society.
Consent of the Governed is a story of political espionage--the hero Daggat, his platform and the virtuous backers behind him fight for democratic principles as they were drawn up by our American forefathers. They are challenged to the extreme by a candidate backed by an organization of the richest global corporations, Polaco, for which economic advancement is the only goal--they scheme to dissolve the constitution in favor of a corporate state. Henchmen, moles, murder and intrigue have a large role behind the scenes of this presidential campaign, and the reader begins to admire Adrian Daggat and the courageous people who dare to fight the ruthless, untiring Polaco.
It is easy to get behind a presidential candidate like Adrian Daggat and it's easy to admire Consent of the Govern's author, Gerald Balcar. He comes forth with wisdom and insight regarding some of America's biggest challenges. Consent of the Governed, is more than a novel of political espionage--it questions and thoughtfully considers grave concerns of contemporary, global society.
Yes, it's long, yes, it's a first novel, yes, it's worth reading.

Interesting concept - in need of an editor.......2000-04-02
Despite the heavy-handed presentation of political ideas, 700+ pages, and numerous punctuation and grammatical errors, this book will be interesting to the hard core political junkies. The story follows the Presidential campaign from behind the scenes with plenty of insights into a candidate's message development, advertising, and events planning. Character development is not the point here, it's the politics and the message that politicians and American citizens need to deal honestly and more realistically with the range of complex issues we face, from our role in the world to health care, education, and the national debt. If someone had edited this book to tone down the blatant "good guy" vs. "bad guy" presentation, the book's appeal would be much broader. As is, not many will want to bother.

Book Description
Nothing is "pure" in America, and, indeed, the rich ethnic mix that constitutes our society accounts for much of its amazing vitality. Werner Sollors's new book takes a wide-ranging look at the role of "ethnicity" in American literature and what that literature has said--and continues to say--about our diverse culture. Ethnic consciousness, he contends, is a constituent feature of modernism, not modernism's antithesis. Discussing works from every period of American history, Sollors focuses particularly on the tension between "descent" and "consent"--between the concern for one's racial, ethnic, and familial heritage and the conflicting desire to choose one's own destiny, even if that choice goes against one's heritage. Some of the stories Sollors examines are retellings of the biblical Exodus--stories in which Americans of the most diverse origins have painted their own histories as an escape from bondage or a search for a new Canaan. Other stories are "American-made" tales of melting-pot romance, which may either triumph in intermarriage, accompanied by new world symphonies, or end with the lovers' death. Still other stories concern voyages of self-discovery in which the hero attempts to steer a perilous course between stubborn traditionalism and total assimilation. And then there are the generational sagas, in which, as if by magic, the third generation emerges as the fulfillment of their forebears' dream. Citing examples that range from the writings of Cotton Mather to Liquid Sky (a "post-punk" science fiction film directed by a Russian emigre), Sollors shows how the creators of American culture have generally been attracted to what is most new and modern. About the Author: Werner Sollors is Chairman of the Afro-American Studies Department at Harvard University and the author of Amiri Baraka: The Quest for a Populist Modernism. A provocative and original look at "ethnicity" in American literature BLCovers stories from all periods of our nation's history BLRelates ethnic literature to the principle of literary modernism BL"Grave and hilarious, tender and merciless...The book performs a public service."-Quentin Anderson

Good politics, terrible novel.......2002-02-23
True believers in the theory that the Democratic Party / left liberal political establishment is more interested in maintaining party power than in the good of the country, and is willing to intentionally demean and degrade the American public to accomplish that end will give this book 5 stars. Anyone who believes that story threads should be continuous, that grammatical rules should be followed, or that a good proof-reader or spell-checker should review a book before it is printed will give this book 1 star. Technical errors abound as well. Being a true believer I liked it. If I were an English teacher, I would use it as an example of how not to write a book.
Turner Diaries, next step.......2001-11-14
The softcore version of the "Turner Diaries." The writing is leaden and the characters cardboard, but no matter - that's not what the book is about. The author gets your goat quickly enough so that you're riled up about every "them" you've ever imagined responsible for what you don't like and consequently the book becomes a ripping read - and gives you a good self-satisfied "mad-on."
Definitely go to the "Turner Diaries" next.
A "Must Read" for Military Personnel.......2001-04-12
The book blew me away. I'm in the Army and accepted the prospect of going to war before I ever signed the enlistment papers. But that wasn't war against the American people. It really started me thinking about a lot of issues for the military that I never considered before. Could I order my men to fire on unarmed Americans to protect the politicians in Washington? If the things in this book actually happened, I honestly don't know how I would respond. Thank God, it's fiction and I never have to find out.
Whether You are Right or Left, It'll Make Your Blood Boil.......2001-04-01
After the first night of reading a few chapters of this book in bed, my wife 'suggested' that I finish it in another room of the house at another time of the day. At least once within every 10 pages, I found myself shouting "YES!" and "AMEN!" in agreement with lead character Senator George's commentary of the modern day political landscape. If you are Conservative-leaning in your political philosophy, you need look no further for a novel that will weave your observances, fears and concerns into a page-turning thriller. Hey - S.L. - How about turning George into a returning series character (a la Clancys' Jack Ryan)? This would make an excellent movie.
I agree with KirkinRichmond.......2001-02-21
I heard about this book from a flier I received at a Richmond bookstore while I was there for Christmas. I kept waiting for it to come up on this site, and finally ordered it from iuniverse.
I have to say, I agree with KirkinRichmond. However, the thing that appealed to me was that this guy never uses two words when one will do. Instead of rambling around in long winded descriptions, he gives you a crisp, clear snapshot and moves on.
Beats me why the big publishing houses didn't pick this one up. It will make a great movie, lots of action and drama.
On a personal note to Mr. Pearce, I'm ready for the next one!

Book Description
Mike Zabusky first sees Katherine Staresina at a party given by Mike’s doctoral-thesis adviser, Matthew Weingarden. They are instantly drawn to each other--so instantly that they have a sexual collision against a bathroom wall less than two hours after they meet.
Mike immediately feels surer of his love for Katherine than of anything else in his life--his moribund thesis about the Golem (an artificial creature in Jewish folklore); Weingarden, who appears to simultaneously support and undermine Mike’s studies; and his lonely, angry stock-trading father, soon to commit suicide and thus further entangle the emotional knot, first tied in childhood, that Mike must try to untie.
While Katherine begins a mystifying game of intimacy and rejection, Mike learns more about her troubled past and seems to lose ground with every effort to win her heart. Finally he comes face-to-face with his own Golem-like existence. Who is controlling him? What can he do to escape-and determine-his own fate? What is the truth behind his father’s death?
Consent paints a poignant, surprising, and ultimately profound portrait of a young man facing the universal challenge of balancing passion with wisdom.
Customer Reviews:
A Compelling, Lyrical Look on Sex and Relationships.......2002-05-16
Ben Schrank's second novel is a compelling, vivid exploration not only of sex, but more importantly of family and friendship. He elegantly weaves in the medieval Jewish myth of the Golem as a metaphor describing the protagonist's relationship with his father, friends, and especially with the object of his affection, the young lawyer with whom he shares some intense sexual encounters. Without divulging much of the plot, I shall say that this is one of the most intriguing examinations of relationships I've read, blessed with lyrical, poetic descriptions of sex that almost rival any I've read in the novels of John Hawkes. I greatly enjoyed reading Ben Schrank's literary debut, MIRACLE MAN; CONSENT is a worthy successor from one of our best young American writers.
unusual and compelling.......2002-05-01
Grad school, parents' mortality, career uncertainty, romantic confusion-- elements of life in the 30's that too often end up parodied or dumbed down in popular fiction. Schrank's book is not one of those tiresome gen-x novels about sophisticated young New Yorkers. Consent is truthful, contemplative and moving, and, in places, very effectively erotic (which is all too rare an accomplishment-- why is literary writing about sex usually so awful?) The scholarly background (the main character studies the Jewish myth of the Golem) is convincingly rendered and adds dimension to the story, making it feel more expansive and universal. The only thing that lent an occasionally slightly off note was that the love interest was such a rhymes-with-witch. But Schrank made his character's attraction to her urgent and irrational enough that it worked and was quite compelling. I liked Miracle Man a lot and was extremely pleased that Consent was so good-- there's nothing more depressing than a sophomore slump in a talented young writer, and Consent is emphatically not an example of this. It shows development and maturity. I strongly recommend it-- support young writers so that they can become mature writers! Buy the hardcover. It's worth it.
The Golem meets the American Family.......2002-03-15
What a great mix of mysticism, folklore and contemporary family life, as the hapless hero confronts work, relationships and -- this is really quite wonderful -- the Golem, returning Isaac-Singer like from too long an absence in American fiction. Singer does come to mind here, only fast-forwarded to very contemporary America. Schrank has a great sense of humor, a wicked eye for the travails of contemporary family. It reads like a rocket ride. The mysticism is applied with a brilliant hand -- not too much, not too little. Very surprising, and even enchanting. This book is touching and fun, and if you are struggling to deal with almost anything relating to family, and need a bit of mystical help or guidance, right on target.

Super Reader.......2007-08-31
This book has all the elements, a hero of sorts all muscly and armored, and a sneaky gorgeous sorceress that he must initially make a deal with her to enable him to overcome in a coming conflict.
The Horned Helmet that she gives him does make him superpowered, hard to hurt, and all that, but very much has a touch of the Stormbringer about it, which he learns and has to struggle against.
The writing just isn't too good, though.
Great sweeping fantasy.......2007-05-04
I come to write this review because after almost 15 years since I first read the book, I tried to find it again and came on the Amazon page. I read all the reviews and I agree with most of them. This (and the rest of the series) is a great fantasy read, far and above most of the junk that's out there now.
One word to describe Silke's writing style is, "florid." Undoubtedly, Silke is great at conveying with words the varied and colorful world that exists in his mind. In a way, however, he makes the reader a less involved in that the reader only passively consumes the rich tapestry of Silke's words. But it does make for an incredibly absorbing read, aided tremendously by Frazetta's drawings. A nice trick in each of his Gath books is that Silke makes an effort to fit the cover art into the narrative, a single scene that segues neatly into the plot where the cover art is described in perfect detail. A transmutation of a picture into a thousand (or a few less, actually) words!
I highly recommend this series. I would love to see this turned into a movie series. I feel that "look & feel" design has already been done by Silke.
Interesting, I tried Silke's other writings and was less than enthused. It's the same with my other favorite fantasy series "Seventh Sword" by Dave Duncan, and to a lesser degree, "Deeds of Paksanarrion" by Elizabeth Moon. While I found most of Duncan's writings other than the "Seventh Sword" to range from average to unreadable, I am enjoying Moon's "Vatta War" series.
excellent book.......2006-06-09
this is the first book of series, obviously. it is really detailed. the pic on the front cover is the good guy. i dont want to really tell u the story line, but sufficeth to say, it catches you on the very first page.
i am glad they made another.......2005-07-24
hey i have read the first 4 numerous times and i am glad they made a fifth i cant wait to read it
Great cover art, but trite formulaic writing.......2004-07-22
Series review: Death Dealer
There are 4 books in this series:
1. Prisoner of the Horned Helmet
2. Lords of Destruction
3. Tooth and Claw
4. Plague of Knives
I was disappointed with this series.
I made the classic mistake of novice book buyers ... I foolishly bought the books because they had really cool baroque-fantasy cover art. Take my word for it - you money would be better spent buying a Frank Frazetta artwork calendar than buying this series, because it's all downhill once you open the cover.
The writing is remarkably mediocre and packed with trite cliches. It reads like bad Conan. And it's not even "bad" in the sort of way that's sometimes still pretty good, if you're not too discerning (like bad pizza, or even bad sex). No. These books are honestly, truly, and genuinely BAD. Bad as in did-someone-forget-to-take-out-the-garbage-for-2-weeks kinda bad. The I-havent-showered-in-7-days-and-the-sheets-are-sticking-to-me kinda bad. Not quite bad enough to make one of Douglas Adams's infamously odious Vogon poets wince, but still plenty bad.
I can sum things up nicely with this observation - these books were apparently written AFTER THE FACT, strictly to cash in on the cult popularity of Frazetta's "Death Dealer" artwork. Yes, you read that correctly - the books were spawned by the artwork, rather than the reverse.
The story is basically a takeoff on the Elric/Stormbringer 'cursed artifact' motif, except in this case the central character is a big barbarian who gets taken over by a cursed enchanted helmet inhabited by a powerful demon (plot device alert: thin excuse for mindless hack & slash action).
A potentially cool premise, but very poorly executed by the authors.
Michael Moorcock (Elric/Stormbrinner) and Poul Anderson (The Broken Sword) have done similar plots, and done them far better.
