IRELAND DURING THE BEATLE YEARS.......2003-10-27
This is a brilliantly written book that gives a literary portrayal of an Irish town. In reading this, one gets a feel for the places, political issues and people of Ireland in the early 1960s.
This author also has a flair for providing full descriptions of his characters. One of my favorite parts in the book was when he described one character as having a Beatle moptop "like George Harrison" (the youngest Beatle who was also known for having the longest hair during the Moptop Era) and making Beatle references. I loved the nod to George Harrison's beautiful wavy hair. (The Beatles with the exception of Ringo were of Irish extraction).
All in all, an excellent work and a "yeah, yeah, yeah!"
The heart of Ireland unvailed.......1998-08-23
Patrick McCabe is one of the more extroadinary writers to emmerge from Ireland in recent times, anybody who experienced his sadistic tale, The Butcher's Boy will understand what I mean by this. In Carn, he beautifully unvails his microcosm of Irish life through the inhabitants of one town. McCabe traces the town through poverty, prosperity and finally utter chaos. Blending together a stong Irish dialect, McCabe tells a tale that may sound familar or completely alien. Definately a good read, especially for those political types.

My favorite low carb cookbook!.......2005-02-17
I have nearly every low carb cookbook known to man, but this one is definitly my favorite. It's not for those just starting out with low carb (meaning, those on Induction levels) since Fiona is more liberal with fruits and certain vegetables that are not permitted in the beginning. But once you've moved on to Ongoing Weight Loss phases and beyond (or if you're just low carb in general) this will quickly become a favorite. Since I am nearly at goal weight I've had to lower calories significantly and that is why this cookbook caters so perfectly to me. Although she does have some more "luxurious" dishes with rich ingredients, most of the recipes utilize lean meats and good fats (like olive oil) over things like lard or butter. (I've found most other low carb cookbooks use excessive fat, meaning a dish could have 700 calories or more at times). Some exceptionaly good recipes include the roasted red bell pepper and feta cheese fritatta, the roasted chicken quarters with pear (not the exact title), the mashed cauliflower, the turnip and rutabaga chips, the lamb chops with tomato sauce (not exact title) and her breakfast shakes. I'm still working my way through this book, but I have yet to be disappointed...

Thoughtfull, touching, entertaining, classical literature.......2000-03-15
I first read this book (actually it is a play) in highschool and though I generally hated to be forced to read a book I really loved this one. I finished way ahead of schedule.
The reason: this book is extremely very well and has an up-to-date message even though it was written several 100 years back. The story is abou a Jewish merchant called Nathan, a templar and Nathan's daughter and the love between the templar and the daughter and the conflicts arising from it.
It is set in the time of the crusades and its message is: it does not matter which religion you believe in as long as you are a decent human being. This message was only written in a play because the author was officially forbidden from teaching his reconciliatory views on religion in university! It must have been a hardship for him, but today we can enjoy a literary masterpiece for just that reason. For me it is a perfect book and it might very well be the same for you.

One of worlds masterpieces.......2000-04-14
"Nathan the Wise" is one of the greatest and wisest dramas I ever read, not only the picturesque and interesting backround but also the wise, idealistic and forwardlooking image that the author produces makes the drama worth being read by everybody. Lessing wrote this drama two-hundred years ago and that fact makes it even more interesting to see the message that it tries to spread, because in our-days-world the demand for humanity and tolerance is more important than ever.
