    Book Description

With her acclaimed novels Hanna’s Daughters and Simon’s Family, international bestselling author Marianne Fredriksson captivated readers with the extraordinary power of her emotional landscapes. Now Fredriksson gives us Two Women, the unforgettable story of a remarkable friendship–and the secrets that threaten to tear it apart.

They meet on a spring day in the local garden center: Inge, a native Swede, lovely and refined, a woman ruled by reason and her own deeply held moral beliefs; and Mira, a Chilean immigrant who still feels out of place in the cold Scandinavian north. Through many shared afternoons in Inge’s garden, Mira slowly reveals the horrors of a shadowed past and the heartbreak involving her beloved daughter. As Mira and her family begin a wrenching journey of discovery, Inge unwittingly uncovers secrets in her own life that make her question the very order of her world. An elegant novel of time and memory, love and distance, and the wounds they create and conceal, Two Women is Marianne Fredriksson’s most affecting work of fiction to date.

    1 out of 5 stars Terrible.......2004-07-24

I had never read one of Marianne Frediksson's books before this, and after reading Two Women, I will never again. I have read better stories from my fourth grade students!! This book was extremely choppy because she tried to have many story lines but none of them were ever developed. I am only give this book one star because 0 stars is not an option. Skip this book and move on to a real author!

5 out of 5 stars An incredible work of prose.......2003-12-19

I have read Fredriksson's other books and this one, while slender, is definitely a keeper. I really enjoyed this novel.

It is about two women with secrets held deep inside them and by chance, they met at a garden center. There is Mira, a Chilean refugee from Chile who escaped to Sweden during the uprising. There is Inge, a native-born Swedish woman who is divorced and her two daughters are in London in school. Mira is also divorced and while her husband is rarely mentioned in this novel, he was somewhat central to all that has happened in the past. And these two women begin a long friendship based on mutal respect and trust.

This is a lovely book ~~ written lyrically and beautifully. Fredriksson draws the two characters with emotion and feeling and depths ~~ she introduces nightmares that every woman fears and how they both overcome it. They have discovered an inner strength within and found themselves more open and fragile as a result.

If you enjoy books written about friendships, this book is for you.

2 out of 5 stars Reads like a first grade primer.......2002-02-22

I like Hanna's Daughters and was looking forward to reading this one, but her choppy, unimaginative style of writing left me wondering if she was hurting for money. I found the development of the friendship between the two women and their children to be forced and unrealistic in the period of time she was covering ( about a year?) The emotions seemed exagerated. The sentence structure typically resembled what one might find in a grade school primer. I'm wondering if perhaps this is a result of it being translated from Swedish to English. At any rate, not a pleasant read, fortunately it was very short.

3 out of 5 stars I enjoyed her earlier books a lot more.......2002-01-23

I've read all of Marianne Fredriksson's novels in the original Swedish and some in English translation. The translations, this one included, have all seemed choppy and forced. But this may have something to do with the original language -- Swedish often uses very short sentences. Still, it doesn't make up for the very thin storyline. It's as if she's run out of ideas.

If you've never read Fredriksson before, skip this one and go for her earlier books, such as Simon's Family.

Unfortunately, her first several books, which are her best, in my opinion, have not been translated into English.

3 out of 5 stars Keeps your interest , but very choppy.......2001-05-30

The novel discloses how two women meet, become friends, and through time disclose their darkest secrets. Although the book kept my interest, it was written in a very choppy fashion between chapters and sometimes when switching characters. There were also some absurd descriptions of sexual abuse which I found to detract from the story. It was as if she tried to create a dramatic effect quickly and it floped. the development of the character who was her son could have been developed much further. She also could have written this book with an ending that would have allowed her to continue with a series of books following this friendship, but did not.

It was a fun fast read, but seemed to be written as a formula novel, and it was too choppy. Clean up the rough spots and you could have a much better novel.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest independent comic series ever........2007-09-22

Terry Moore's series Strangers in Paradise is a fantasic study of modern life and love. It's about breaking down social stereotypes and learning to love a person for who they are not what they are. It's about true friendship and how hard and how beautiful that is. It's about growing up and knowing yourself and being yourself and rising above your history. It's also an action/adventure thriller with twists and turns and plenty of surprises. There are stories within stories. It's a multilayered, many splendored thing. It's such a good read. Read it.

      5 out of 5 stars A wonderful addition to a fast-paced and enthralling series.......2006-04-08

Katchoo and Francine are roomates, and Katchoo has a crush on Francine. Francine loves Katchoo but prefers men. David is in love with Katchoo, but she hates men. This is the love triangle that anchors this multivolume series. In volume one we learned that prior to living with Francine, Katchoo worked for David's gang boss sister, Darcy Parker, as a call girl and also was her lover. She went into hiding when she ran away from Darcy with a whole lot of Darcy's money.

Now in Volume 2 Darcy has found Katchoo and forces her back into her mob with threats on Francine's life. Darcy needs Katchoo in her biggest blackmail project to date. The main theme of the volume is how Katchoo and David, with help from Francine, escape Darcy's nefarious plans.

Terry Moore takes us through three different time periods in this book. The main story takes place in the time when Darcy's plans are foiled by Katchoo. Then Mr. Moore takes us back to when Francine and Katchoo first met in high school. It is in there that we learn about the troubles that have shaped their current inability to develop loving relationships. Then we find that the high school flashback is just a reminiscence of Francine who hasn't seen Katchoo for ten years and is a wife and mother in a loveless marriage. If she ever needed Katchoo's love, it is at this moment.

The book ends with a short fantasy piece where Francine and Katchoo role play Zena, Warrior Princess. All in all, a delightful book with lots of twists and turns to keep you wanting more.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for comic fans.......2005-11-19

I was late jumping on the SiP bandwagon, but in the end I'm sure glad I did. If it's one thing Terry Moore is good at, is writing stories that pull on the strings of your heart. It's certainly the most unconventional comic to say the least as all of the characters seem like real people, with no superpowers to be found. Yet all of them do have a real villain- reality. The pain of a love relationship gone wrong, gang crime, brutal murders and dissapointment of dying dreams. It is also a book filled with genuine warmth of friendship, romance and happiness that simply doesn't exist in other books.

All in all, I recomment this a must read for any comic fan. I do agree with what the reader below me said, that the faces of Casey and Katchoo are almost identical. But it's still a damn good book and I'm sorry to see that it will soon becoming to and end.

5 out of 5 stars The way it should be.......2004-11-20

I have to say that I have tried to read the individual comics that comprise this book. I just couldn't really get into the characters and had no desire to read the series. These pocket books are the way these characters need to be represented. With this format, the reader has a greater chance of seeing the depth and all the turns in the lifes of Francine, Katchoo and David. We see how minor characters interact and come back again. I have really come to enjoy these books.

If I had one complaint it would be in the art work. Now stop booing me. The art work is really excellent but the faces of most of woman are drawn the same. It takes me a few minutes to figure out who I am looking at and her role. Fancine is no problem. Just the characters that I believe to be blonde all look the same.

Other than that, the real strength of the series is in the writing which is top notch. I have come to care for these characters and look forward to book 3.

      5 out of 5 stars Just wonderful!.......2004-11-13

This was my first foray into the 'Strangers in Paradise' series, and what an incredible series it is. Infact, it is one of the best comic works I have come across, and I recommend it highly. I am completely excited about reading the rest of Moore's collection and was sorry when this had finished.

This pocket book is wonderful value and provides hours of entertainment. I am pleased to see that the series has been compiled, it is just too difficult to find the chronology of little books, and it was the release of these pocket books that inspired me to investigate 'Strangers in Paradise.'

The female characters are fleshed out, strong, very real, utterly likable and unlike the female caricatures so common in the comic genre. I particularly loved the high school portion of the work, which charters the beginnings of their intense friendship. As well the Xena story, which is also wonderful and quite funny.

Moore's work has a subtle gentle humour and he is quite amazing at nagivating the female psyche. While I wished I could have read the Pocket Book 1 first, it is not impossible to start a 'Strangers in Paradise' journey with this work.

But I do suggest you begin it. It is such a wonderful comic.

            5 out of 5 stars This is a masterpiece.......2005-12-19

Having studied and befriended Professor Dorfman while studying under him at Duke University, I came to know his tale, Death and the Maiden, very intimately. It is a universal story that will likely serve as his masterwork, and as a result, will serve as one of the theatre's most important and most original hallmarks of the 20th Century.

As other reviews have noted, the brief play very deeply and very engagingly touches on myriad issues related to war, to dissent, to love, to loyalty, to trust, to men and women; to memory; to torture; to government; and so on and so forth. It is brilliantly done, and is punctuated with an amount of restraint that renders this play unforgettable.

5 out of 5 stars Is justice ever really served?.......2004-04-08

Ariel Dorfman was a Chilean exile who feared that he might "disappear" if he attempted to live and work under the Pinochet dictatorship. "Death and the Maiden" is a sort of autobiography for Dorfman. The play centers around the character of Paulina, a woman who ultimately kidnaps the man she suspects of holding her prisoner and presiding over her torture and rape many years ago. It's a suspenseful play that tackles the issues of justice and retribution, but it also has elements of suspense and mystery: is Dr. Miranda really the person that Paulina thinks he is? This is an excellent play that's fairly well-known, yet it's hardly ever staged for some reason, which is a shame. (Note: Never, EVER subject yourself to the Sigourney Weaver/Ben Kingsley movie version. It is so awful.)

4 out of 5 stars The Secrets in Death.......2004-02-11

Death and the Maiden is a biographical work by Ariel Dorfman. At the time it was written Chile was in the middle of a dictatorship and the people suffered from constant fear. Was the person lurking outside their house someone coming to capture them? The people of Chile were constantly kidnapped and tortured, which is portrayed through Pauline. She represents the Chilean people who were victimized and the rights which were 'raped'. Pauline finally meets up with the doctor she believes did this to her, and whether or not he did, she creates her retribution around him. Until the people could attack Chile and gain a confession from the ones who were supposed to protect them (the police) they could never live in comfort or be satisfied. As is Pauline who demands a confession from the doctor in order to have a face to blame. In the end it is a mystery to whether or not she killed the doctor, but when she sees his face in the end, while listening to the song he played while raping her, she can merely stare and look away. No longer is their hatred because she has finally been able to accept the past and move on, which was the message Dorfman was trying to portray. The fear of living was in the past and the people, though they would always remember the past injustices, should allow themselves to forgive and move on.

4 out of 5 stars Empowerment in different forms.......2000-07-27

although i have only read this novel once so far,i found it to be extremely compelling. questions of: deceit, betrayal, revenge, desire and power tirade throughout the play. for who is really honest?- certainly not gerardo(a recarnation of robespierre); nor paulina (your frustated, dillusional, prototypical housewife);nor ricardo (the sly,oil slicked stranger accused). these characters undeniable flaws (it could be argued that dorfman has potrayed every piitful and pathetic trait ever known to man)seem to cause their downfalls, but also growth within themselves and their relations with others. surely the final setting will influence the reader to think so.

5 out of 5 stars DEATH AND THE MAIDEN finds excitement in ideals........1997-03-29

Thousands of Chilean citizens are said to have "disappeared" during the regime of General Augusto Pinochet, who reigned from 1973-1990. Though not specifically set in Chile, DEATH AND THE MAIDEN is about learning to live again in the aftermath of such an era.

Gerardo Escobar has just been named to a commission that will investigate human rights cases against the old government that ended in death (or the presumption of death). His wife, Paulina, was victimized herself fifteen years earlier, and still has not recovered from the trauma. Now she believes Roberto Miranda, the good Samaritan who came to Gerardo's aid on the road when he had a flat tire, is the same doctor who oversaw her torture years ago, and since there is no hope of gaining justice from the courts, she decides to put Dr. Miranda "on trial" herself.

Playwright Ariel Dorfman pits his characters' heads against their hearts, and the result is a play that is as exciting intellectually as it is emotionally. They are forced to try to answer the kinds of questions with which human beings prefer never to be faced.

How can we be sure of our own ideals? How can we escape our demons when they surround us every day? How can there be justice if the criminal is never punished?

How can we ever learn to forgive, and NEVER learn to forget?

Coming into Batman: Death And The Maidens, I did not expect much, but I could not put this book down. It is incredible creative and original. The way the story bounces around from the past to the present is masterfully coordinated, and the script is high caliber.

4 out of 5 stars A very lesiurely paced story.......2005-07-17

Batman: Death and the Maidens is pretty much essential reading for any fan of the Ra's Al Ghul character. To say why would be to spoil the ending, which shakes up things in the Batman mythos quite a bit (or at least until DC decides to cop-out and ret-con everything once again).

The main draw of this graphic novel is seeing Batman communicate with his deceased parents. Those who are expecting real, definite communication will be disappointed, as the story leaves it vague whether Ra's potion is for real or just a hallucination. That's not the point however, because it's Bruce's actions and decisions following the conversation that are important. I don't follow mainstream comics much so I don't know how much of this development has been incorporated into the regular titles, but it's definitely another step for the Batman character.

There really is no driving plot line to this story, no doomsday weapon to destroy or plan of world domination to stop. It's all about the characters and their interactions, and the result is a very lesiurely-paced story that might not appeal to all readers. This isn't a bad thing, but I do wish Greg Rucka could've tightened his script a bit more. A lot of time is spent on Nyssa's history and relationship with Ra's. It's almost as if Rucka and Jansen asked for an issue or two more of space than they actually needed, and as a result stayed with a "director's cut" rather than a tighter, more streamlined narrative.

So there's more story here, and as a result this volume is slightly thicker and pricier than you might want to spend on a blind purchase. Ra's Al Ghul fans can nab this without worry, other fans might want to read more reviews or maybe borrow a copy first.

5 out of 5 stars Subtle and insightful.......2005-03-30

This is a beautifully done story. The art is very well executed and is a strong compliment to the thoughtful, intelligent and powerful story told by Rucka. Lots of people didn't seem to "get" the story, and clue into its subtle power. This is not a flash bang superhero story. This is a story about the characters of Batman, R'as Al Ghul and R'as estranged daughter Nyssa. The characters drive the story, not some artificial plot. The centerpiece is the parallel stories of Batman/Bruce Wayne and Nyssa and how their pasts have shaped them. The story revolves around the two characters coming to terms with their past and parentage and the choices between being shaped by the past or ruled by it. In the center, like a manipulating spider is R'as, spinning webs with which he hopes to carry on his apocalyptic vision for the Earth. The conflict between Batman and R'as has been a compelling corner of the Batman mythos. Batman seeks to save the world by intervening and being and example, a warrior fighting to end the never-ending war against evil and injustice by working with the world as it is. R'as wants to start the world over, by destroying the bulk of humanity and then taking over as the "enlightened" ruler of a new Utopia. The resolution shows the strengths of Batman and R'as as respective hero and villain and begins a new chapter for the competing visions toward saving the world. If you are ready for an introspective, thoughtful and ultimately powerful story, this is the graphic novel for you.

This title was unfortunately worse than I expected.
            ..Can't recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Johnathon aint Jack.......2003-05-30

I really enjoyed all the books in this series, even if it didnt last long enough! In between waiting for a new Jack Fleming Novel from Miss Elrod, I picked this up, and like everything she writes its wonderful. Now its very different character wise..........mostly I suppose because of the settings being so vastly apart, But Johnathon's world is just as excited it seems!
I was very moved by how he explains his "condition" to his sister....and how his man-servant comes to grips with the newness of being a servant to a vamp! Over all this is a very Classy book, and a super great series, but then again, maybe Im just biased!
I only regret not seeing more of these storys while I wait for a new vampire files book!
Miss Pat, dont listen to these boneheads who dont like your work, the majority of the people like your work, give us MORE, more, more, and let the rest of the idiots stick with Bram stokers Dracula, and stay in thier little rut, who needs em!

4 out of 5 stars Awesome!! Revolutionist vampires at their Best!!!.......1999-03-30

Wow I just read this again and all I can say is wow. This is one of the better books in this series. This whole series puts a new twist into vampire story telling. I loved how Jonathan had to deal with his treacherous and back stabbing family. He's a vampire and they're killers out for money. Talk about dysfunctional families. Unfortunately the author seems to have stopped writing this series and so I urge Elrod please keep this storyline going!!

5 out of 5 stars Very good - I read the series twice.......1999-03-08

The Jonathan Barrett series was wonderful. I regret only that the books were all given such morbid names (each including the word 'death'), because they give an unattractive image to a series that is far more cheerful and amusing than you ought to expect from vampire novels. The series didn't harp on the same old themes of the vampire's lonliness at his separation from humanity and guilt at needing to take human life, because Jonathan Barrett was not separated, nor did he take human life. I read the first book and enjoyed it before I realized that it was called "Death and the Maiden". If I had known that, I might not have picked it up.
