Customer Reviews:
Arban's review.......2007-08-24
It is an excellent book from start to finish. I would recommend it to any trombone player from beginner to professional. All the approaches were very understandable and well explained. It will help take your talent to new heights that you never expected. It is an extraordinary book to help you with every aspect of your playing.
It's a reprint of a book from the year 1936 .......2007-08-09
Sorry - but it's 70 years old, (Back to the Future?) pages and pages of old manuscript (sheet music) and not much explanitory text.
"The Art of Trombone Playing" by Edward Kleinhammer is much better.
Arban's Method is a Requisite.......2007-02-14
Jean Baptiste Arban has created an astounding trombone and baritone (bass clef) reference for students of any music level. Whether it is used to supplement private lessons, teach remedial music to a latecoming student, or advance an aspiring young musician, it is direct and thorough. Arban covers everything from the correct way to hold the instrument in the first few pages, to the final section of the book containing etudes on the professional level. The books is divided such that the student skips around to reach various aspects of practicing; there is no ploughing through a gigantic volume page by page.
The Foundation.......2007-01-06
Arban's book is the foundation for any student of the trombone. Although some of the book is dated, it should be practiced and devoured on a daily basis. It is a basic building block of trombone mastery.
Sounds great........2006-09-19
I'm a trumpet player in high school and very serious about playing. I have currently a copy of the Arban's book for trumpet and have noticed unmeasurable improvement in my technique, sight reading and overall playing. Though, this is not the trumpet book which I use daily, I am certain that this book will be or, will be close in perfection as my trumpet Arban's was for me. If you play trombone/euphonium and are serious or, just want to improve, I suggest you buy this book.

Just Wonderful.......2007-07-13
My dad teaches Sunday School and was looking for this book to incorporate into his lesson plans. I found it here at Amazon and fell in love with this book. Absolutely wonderful to read and very profound. Exceptional!
Historical Preservation - Community Backbone.......2007-06-10
The title says it all: "Trombones" represents the preservation of the history of the community backbone of prayer, persistence, and strength. The poetry gives some insight to the suffering of the elders, and speaks to the continuing fight for the full parity of the AfricanAmerican community in a country that was literally built upon the bleeding, sweaty backs of my ancestors.
Amazon is to be commended for participating in this historical preservation of a works that I would recommend as mandatory reading for generations to come - regardless of religion, gender, or color.
God's Trombones: Poems That Galvanize the Soul.......2007-04-25
My soul is galvanized everytime I hear or read James Weldon Johnson's God's Trombones. I have directed student perfomances of this deeply moving African American text. "The Crucifixion," for example, tells the story of how Jesus Christ, my Lord, my Savior,my Friend, suffered death on an old cross so that I might have an opportunity to be more sensitive to the hurting. The "Prodigal Son" urges me to experience and, thus understand, that I must live with a redemptive consiousness. And, of course, I am compelled to understand, through the poem "Go Down Death" this reality: God does call His children home. Those who have suffered "long in the vineyard" are deserving of rest. For sure, God's Trombones is a poetic tribute to an experience that is Christian and African American. I thank James Welson Johnson for creating this poetic masterpiece. Let's continue to read it; let's perform it. Let's live within the context of the spirituality of the voice. Amen!
Unfamiliar Harmony.......2007-03-15
While James Weldon Johnson's theology is not always orthodox ("God thought and thought" - who could put a new thought in God's mind? unless it was God and, then, God would not be God - this insight compliments of E.V. Hill in his sermon "When Was God At His Best?"), JWJ's poetry and, especially, his Preface displays the harmonious beauty of a long tradition of African American preaching not generally known or appreciated outside of African American circles. If one really wants to become familiar with and, indeed, edified by the godly reaching of E.V. Hill (now deceased), Fred Luter, Tony Evans, Robert Smith and a host of unknowns who preach with substance and, sometimes, in the "whoop"ing style, then, Weldon's book is a must read. May Christianity never lose what God has brought forth in a substantial style which stirs heart, mind and soul.
A Priceless Cultural Artifact.......2007-02-28
When I was a youngster, we all knew of these poems. "The Creation" was, in fact, a standard part of the 10th-grade English curriculum and was one of the most often selected pieces for what was then called "dramatic recitation." (This was in Oklahoma, Alabama and South Carolina in the late 1950's and early 1960's.)
Now I cannot find anyone much under the age of 50 who has ever heard of them. This is but one of a great many tragic cultural losses of our time.
The poems evoke those trombone-like voices of Black preachers ringing with their simple themes, imaginative colorations, and powerful deliveries contrasting the pain of mortal life with the glory and joy of the eternal one. With their plaints and affirmations, their truths and contradictions, they embody a crucial aspect of the American heritage.
Moving? "Powerful" hardly expresses it. When I first acquired the book, I read to my wife the poem, "Go Down Death -- A Funeral Sermon." We were in the car on the way home from the bookstore. We had to stop at the mall for her to make a purchase, and she had to wait in the car while she dried her eyes before going in.
These poems cannot be allowed to be forgotten. They just cannot.
Book Description
Marco Bordogni (1788-1856), a celebrated tenor of the 19th Century, wrote these vocalizes during his later career as a voice teacher. Transcribed and adapted by Joannes Rochut in three books, these became the cornerstone of the trombone repertoire. Book one offers the trombone student the first sixty etudes in the series and promotes musicianship, flexibility and technique. A must for all trombone students!

Great standard!.......2005-11-01
Few lesson books carry this much use! I've been using this to help students for quite some time. A great buy.
Excellent Service.......2005-10-29
We received the book in excellent condition in an expected timeframe. Thanks for the wonderful service. Janis Pressley
Very useful and not boring!.......2005-08-10
This book teaches great technique, particular tonguing, but my favorite part of the book is the studies sound great when played correctly and it is not monotonous like other books.
TIMELESS VALUE.......2005-08-04
I have purchased this series [3] three times over the past 40 years because there just isn't any better way to sharpen your legato tonguing technique and improve your artistry. Did I mention that these etudes just plain sound great when played well. Some things are classics and this book of melodious etudes is surely one of them. By the way, I did not misplace them, I repurchased them [twice] after literally wearing them out.
This book is awesome.......2002-04-30
This book helps trombonists work on their tone, their legato tounging, sight reading, and playing in general. There is always a new etude to play and when you are done there is another on the next page!
Book Description
This is the first comprehensive study of the trombone in English. It covers the instrument, its repertoire, the way it has been played, and the social, cultural, and aesthetic contexts within which it has developed. The book explores the origins of the instrument, its invention in the fifteenth century, and its story up to modern times, also revealing hidden aspects of the trombone in different eras and countries.
The book looks not only at the trombone within classical music but also at its place in jazz, popular music, popular religion, and light music. Trevor Herbert examines each century of the trombone’s development and details the fundamental impact of jazz on the modern trombone. By the late twentieth century, he shows, jazz techniques had filtered into the performance idioms of almost all styles of music and transformed ideas about virtuosity and lyricism in trombone playing.
Book Description
This is the first illustrated history of the horns that have defined jazz and enhanced rock, pop, and R&B with an astonishingly expressive range of distinctive, classy sounds. With a bright mix of sparkling color photography and engaging narrative, the book explores the evolving music, brilliant musicians, and leading makers of these inspiring instruments from the 1920s to 1990s. 200 color photos, including three fold-out spreads. 120 pages, 7-1/2 inch. x 9-3/4 inch.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent resource.......2000-09-16
I was part of the original conceptual team for this book and was very pleased to see the final outcome. This book is extremely well-written with lots of great photographs and charts. The focus is primarily on the saxophone, and die hard collectors/enthusiasts will appreciate the factual integrity of the book. I found the pictures particularly interesting, since most (if not all) of the horns pictured were distributed in the UK. Thus, you see some great export variants of the classic Selmer Balanced Action and Conn 10M. I highly recommend this great work to anyone who loves the saxophone.

After two years he was accepted by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, where he remained for his entire career until he retired in 1985. He has played under every Chicago Symphony Orchestra conductor, covering from Frederick Stock to Sir Georg Solti. In 1986 he received the Distinguished Service Award from the International Trombone Association. While Kleinhammer states that his book 'is written for the student who has no teacher available or for the teacher seeking more fundamental knowledge of the field of trombone

38-yr old book a "bellwether" for Symphonic Fundamentals.......2001-04-17
It is not by accident that Mr. Edwin Kleinhammer's name appears on many, many symphony musicians' bios. There are plenty of outstanding players, but "teaching" world class artists is another thing. CSO artists Mr. Kleinhammer and the late Mr. Arnold Jacobs and the late Mr. Frank Crisafulli have trained innumerable (global) lower brass artists for well over thirty years each. I have had the pleasure of receiving a group lesson from Mr. Kleinhammer with two others and individual instruction from the late gentleman's gentleman Mr. Frank Crisafulli. What about the book? Mr. Kleinhammer states in his book that he strongly encourages lessons, but at the "worst" the book can self-teach the reader...this is NOT an exaggeration. His highly detailed diagrammed/photo-filled pages on embouchure alone can not be replicated in any other text, they are worth the price of the book by themselves. The (paperback) text includes HIGHLY practical sections on breathing, tone, range, slide technique/legatto (when to use "loo" vs. "doo", etc), intonation control, daily exercises and the cruicial tongue-ing and concurrent air flow (emphasize the "air" get the flappy thing out of the way) mistakes of even advanced amateur players. If you "see" the pros calmy whip through a passage of a rapid Rimsky-Korsakov, for example, without jerking the slide or doing face contortions, etc. you're seeing all of Mr. Kleinhammer's book suggestions put into motion..this level of 1st flight pro does "make it" look easy. Go see a Joe Alessi, an outstanding jazz trombonist as well as the NY Phily first chair, and you'll see what I mean.
The book contains also contains a concise section on trombone prep. literature including Clarke, Arban, Blazhevich, Carl Fischer, Rochut (Melodious Etudes Book III--a masterpiece of symph. prep.in my opinion), and all the significant classic solos and ensemble pieces.
Again, Mr. Kleinhammer correctly mentions throughout the book that the student needs models to listen to, pattern after..simply put he's talking about "recordings" (not necessarily concert halls as you will not be able to sufficiently pick out the passage)Get the Ralph Sauer (Audition excerpt)or Christian Lindberg CDs and listen, and listen some more.. The student who gets on this early in the game combined with this book and a decent brass teacher will be far ahead of the game.
Another suggestion is to tune into the current Boston Symphony bass trombonist's website, Doug Yeo, he provides some fabulous suggestions and advice. (Mr. George Krem, Mr. Yeo's first college played with me in Wheaton, IL. He has served as the Chicago Civic Orchestra, Winnepeg & Victoria Canada and now Cedar Rapids, IA principal. He also has a CD out, taught at the U of Iowa for 12 years after being taught himself by Mr. Keith Brown a legendary Phily Orch. trombonist. Mr. Krem is a very fine teacher and artist). This book, with some good CDs to model after and a decent brass teacher (doesn't have to be "lower" brass teacher frankly) will provide some distinct advantages in accelerating your progress. ...

Book Description
The Jazz Solo Series for Trombone by Mark Vega is a great instructional tool for musicians and music students to learn or improve their improvisational abilities in the jazz - swing idiom. There are 66 examples in the book, starting at a somewhat easy level and gradually increasing in difficulty throughout the book. This book is divided into four sections: Section one, tracks 1 through 36 cover all twelve keys using 11-V-1 and 11-V-111-V1-11-V-1 chord progressions. Section two, tracks 37 through 60 cover all twelve keys using 1-V1-11-V-111-b111-11-V-1 chord progressions. Section three, tracks 61 through 66 are complete worked out solos over the chord changes to the popular Jazz standards "Stella By Starlight", "Take the A Train" and "There Will Never Be Another You." There are two solos for each of these three examples, an easy version followed by a more difficult one. The first version being a prime example of how to approach medium swing Jazz and the second version covering the more complex and demanding style of Bebop Jazz with its faster tempos and more difficult melodic and harmonic note choices. Section four, tracks 67, 68 and 69 are repeated choruses of the chord progressions to the above mentioned songs for extended practice. Please refer to the end of the book for a selected discography of Mark's favorite Jazz albums featuring great soloists.

Customer Reviews:
Best comedy manga ever--but not for kids!.......2006-08-20
I've been amazed at sme of the reviews. This is one of the best comedy manga ever. Is it up to Simpsons' or Family Guy quality? no..but it comes close..really really close. The premise is pretty cool and universal. Incompetent Sgt Keroro (the star) comes to Earth with a small platoon to advance an invasion of Pokopen (the universal name for Earth). Being a boob though (they could have totally done this as a live action show in america since we are so familair with this concept..think Sgt. Bilko, Gomer Pyle and so on) the platoon never has a chance and each volume chronicles a series of misadventures as the family who is simultaneously covering for the aliens and likewise having conquered the aliens (making them do menial labor in exchange for room and board) learns more about the aliens, the ever -expanding universe (complete with satires of Gundam, Kamen Rider and many other popular american and japanese pop figures) as well as themselves, There is enough tawdry humor of the girls in the manga (mainly the mom but occasionally the daughter and youthful looking lady Moa) to give a dirty laugh alongisde of the often flat out inspired comedy. Great manga, great read and have been amazed that so far over 6 volumes it;s maintained a fun and pleasant reading experience.
Sgt. Keroro Reporting for Duty!.......2005-10-10
The basic premise behind Mine Yoshizaki's SGT FROG manga is this: froglike alien Sgt. Keroro and his extraterrestrial compatriots, in a failed attempt to conquer Pokopen (the Earth), find themselves stranded in the company of two Pokopenian siblings, Fuyuki and Natsumi Hinata, and their friends and family. Hilarity ensues. There you go. That's the series - beyond that there is no real coherent plot. But that's not particularly important, because the fact is a complex storyline isn't required for madcap comedy of this order.
The best comparison you can draw to Sgt. Frog is probably to Pinky & the Brain: overloaded with pop culture (Japanese anyway) allusions and socio-political send-ups, our protagonist conjures up preposterous scheme after preposterous scheme, to no avail. Another easy comparison would be with Invader Zim. The biggest difference between Sgt. Frog and these others, however, is the ensemble size: while P&B revolved around the clashing personalities of the title characters, and Invader Zim a team of four or so, Sgt. Frog is propelled by a stable cast of about a dozen unique, distinctly off-the-wall personalities.
There's Natsumi Hinata, for instance, the Pokopenian teen whose authoritative hot-headedness remains the biggest obstacle on the path to invasion - apart from Sgt. Keroro himself, equal parts inept interstellar conqueror and freeloading plastic Gundam model fanatic. Then there's Natsumi's younger brother Fuyuki, a quiet, introverted kid with a keen interest in the occultm or Momoka Nishizawa, the insecure heiress to a worldwide fortune with a keen interest in Fuyuki. Not to mention Private Tamama, one of the Sgt.'s fellow-invaders, whose adorable exterior belies a violent split personality; the ditzy Lady Angol Moa, sent to Earth by her father the universal Lord of Terror to destroy it, but diverted by Keroro's misadventures; and many more.
The various plots, goofy and overblown as they are, make full use of the characters' interpersonal chemistry. For instance: when the School Sports Festival rolls around, athletic Natsumi petitions mom Aki to join her in the child-parent activities. But Aki is unable to attend due to her demanding career as a manga editor, which causes her to be gone most of the time anyway. Natsumi is forlorn by yet another absence, and while Keroro schemes to stand in for Mom Hinata in an attempt to put Natsumi in his debt, Corporal Giroro, whose hard-boiled shell hides a monstrous affection for the girl, has other plans. Meanwhile, Fuyuki suffers from a lack of self-confidence living in his sister's athletic shadow, and wealthy Momoka's attempts to aid his cause at the Festival, like having her bodyguards tranquilize the other racers, are sweet but probably misguided. That's just a sampling, from one of the tamer chapters at that - the insanity quotient is generally far more in excess.
Many of the installments have sensitive undercurrents: unrequited love, the clash between friendship and duty, jealousy, emotional insecurity, family dynamics, and so on. But there's something of overanalyzing in that evaluation, because any pyschological underpinnings involved are offset by copious coatings of over-the-top illustration, harebrained scenarios, laugh-out-loud hilarious gags, and unforgettably zany characters. Be forewarned: in spite of Keroro and Company's admitted adorability it's not for kiddies - there's enough sexual suggestion here to border on ecchi at times. But it's all in fun, and if you have a well developed sense of the absurd, as I like to put it, Sgt. Frog is as good n' silly as it gets.
Don't bother buying it........2005-09-04
Alright, well, I saw this Manga in my library and I thought I'd borrow it, to read it and boarden my horizans of different genres because I'm a Shonen Ai and Yaoi Fan.
This book was rated 13 TEEN and let me tell you, if you think this is a cute little kiddy story it's not! Not only is it [...], featuring a woman with [...], girls showing their [...] in almost every shot they can get away with, there's almost no plot too. It isn't even funny, just increiably stupid.
It's trully is a horrid Manga. If your a fan of Bishonen, stay away from this one! There is none and no Yaoi!
