Book Description

A Healing Divorce is unique. There is no other book devoted solely to rituals for divorce and ceremonies of parting. Written by a formerly married couple who have remained friends, this compassionate and practical book demonstrates how ritual can transform and heal the end of a relationship. If you divorce, your marriage will end in a ritual -- a court hearing; cold, impersonal, adversarial. You may also find yourself in thrall to the Myth of the Bad Divorce. This myth insists that all couples breaking up must recite the same harsh ABC’s: accusation, bitterness, conflict, anger, blaming, and contempt. It doesn’t have to be that way. Based on the authors’ personal experience, as well as interviews and extensive research, A Healing Divorce offers a way to diminish anger, alter destructive patterns, and end a relationship with truth, love, care and forgiveness.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a Helpful 'How-To' About a Painful Process.......2001-05-25

When I picked up Barbara and Phil Penningroth's book at a local bookstore it was with a mixture of curiosity and disbelief. How could a book about transforming divorce be anything more than new agey, pie in the sky wishful thinking? Then I read it. The story of how Barb and Phil consciously approached the end of their own 25 year marriage, along with the examples they cite of ending rituals from various cultures, inspired me to use a few of their ideas to honor the dissolution of my own ten year relationship. The effect was powerful and, yes, transformative. Thanks to the authors for this down to earth, clear, helpful guide to honoring our most intimate relationships even as they end.

5 out of 5 stars A Noble Way, With Heart.......2001-05-24

If you ever suspected deep down that there was another way to get through a divorce, A Healing Divorce will make you rejoice that you were right all along. Thank God for people like Phil and Barbara, who think outside of the box and as they reach for their higher selves during their own heart crisis, are willing to take us along. We become partners in their endeavor to heal, not only our actual parting, but by extension the world around us. This book is a reminder of the goodness and the positive inherent in us all which, even in the deepest of heartaches, is waiting to be honored by being tapped. Success transforms us and touches those around us and the universe smiles. Go it alone, with your X, whatever, this book shows us a noble way through the pain which then births a new kind of love and gentleness within your heart.

5 out of 5 stars Be Smart Enough To Read This Book.......2001-02-23

When I heard of a book dealing with rituals and ceremonies around divorce, I envisioned a feel-good, "we're all okay" kind of sedative. That's not what I found. Instead, Phil and Barbara Penningroth have assembled a comprehensive collection off rituals, services and other tools that real people can use to cope with the real pain of divorce.

Not only do they present several models of divorce services; they also have included comprehensive checklists to help people plan their own rituals and ceremonies and bring them alive in a personal way. Sprinkled throughout are the stories of people who have sued used rituals as part of their healing after divorce, some after tender, cooperative divorces, and some after bitter, rancorous divorces. Each of the stories, however, seems real. Each in its way is instructive.

I was delighted to see that, although the authors obviously have a sharply defined faith, they have lovingly gathered services, traditions, and perspectives from a wide variety of faith traditions. A great example of this is the chapter that explores the question "Is divorce a sin?" with contributions from Christian and Jewish clergy.

What makes this book so powerful is its consistent practicality. This is not a contemplative, introspective tour through someone else's emotional healing. It's a logical, methodical "How-to." As one example, consider the section for people who have a divorcee service on what to consider doing on the one-year anniversary of that service (return to the place, set aside time for quiet meditation, recall favorite moments, celebrate progress, etc.)

Many people will be smart enough to read this book. A few will be so smart they will actually follow the advice in it. They, their children, and all who care about them will be the stronger for it.

5 out of 5 stars HEAL YOUR HEART AND THEIRS.......2001-02-20

Divorce is certainly one of the most painful periods of anyone's life. Once the shock, anger and sadness are behind us, this book offers a vareity of nurturing and spiritual rituals to "untie" us from our former spouse while honoring all that was good and right about the union. This is an important book for anyone going through a divroce and it is certain to help heal the hearts of both parties.

5 out of 5 stars An Alternative to Bitterness.......2001-02-19

When Barbara and Phil Penningroth decided to divorce, they created a ritual to honor the ending of the relationship as it had been honored at the beginning. That in itself is an innovation. They went further, however, and created a book which can provide countless others with the tools to do the same.

There are lots of books out there which purport to help people heal from divorce. Many of them go no further than to explain, "this is how we did it, and if we could so could you." That is good as far as it goes, but it doesn't go far enough. What about the couples where one is still consumed with hostility and the other wants to end it with dignity? How do you create a healing ritual if your former partner refuses to participate? What about the different societal and religious traditions? And, on an even more basic level, what is ritual itself so powerful? What gives it such ability to heal? They clearly explain the power of symbol, and why the ritual needs to be witnessed by someone else (i.e., public) as the original vows were, and why the act of creating your own ritual is an essential component of the receiving the benefits of its healing power.

All these questions are explored with sensitivity. The story of their own discovery of the power of ritual and ceremony is interwoven with case histories of others who have created rituals to symbolize the end of their relationships. The case histories are told in the first person, which gives them the ring of truth.

They then give implicit instructions about how to construct your own ritual, with concrete examples and suggestions of ways in which you can personalize the process. I'm a fan of practical solutions which people can tailor to their own situations, and Phil and Barbara do an admirable job of providing lots of ideas and options which can be sued to create your own process. I particularly like the way they weave together their own experience, the case histories of others, the explanation of why ritual and symbolism are so powerful, and suggestions about how to go about creating your own.

Having done all this, and done it well, Phil and Barbara went one step further. They researched the various religious traditions, and provided sample rituals consistent with each.

In my nearly twenty-five years as a divorce lawyer, I've often been struck by the fact that, popular ideology notwithstanding, most people don't want to harbor bitterness indefinitely. They want to end the relationship which is no longer serving their needs in a way that preserves their dignity and heals the inevitable wounds. It is a sad commentary that our society not only provides no assistance to such people but, to the contrary, almost forces them to be adversarial, blaming and hostile. It is not surprising that the method of accomplishing the growth and healing most people seek is not found in our traditional institutions, but outside of them. "A Healing Divorce" goes far toward filling this void. Anyone who sincerely wishes to develop a mechanism to symbolically heal and cleanse the ending of a relationship cannot fail to find useful and practical assistance in this book, regardless of the level of animosity which previously existed. I highly recommend it to anyone who, recognizing the toxicity of carrying bitterness and regret after the end of a relationship, seek to heal them instead.

For those who think there is no alternative to carrying bitterness and venom into their futures, I suggest that reading this book may change their minds and heal their lives.

5 out of 5 stars Would make an excellent movie.......2007-03-11

Great story, very well written. The character development, especially Kestrel's, was excellent as were names of the characters and places. Very good plot, appreciate very much Carrie's writing style. Action, magic, artifacts, weapons and plenty of enemy encounters. It was similar to playing a RPG computer game, in the different tasks that were completed through out the story. One of the better D&D books I have read thus far.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best D&D books I've read!.......2006-03-18

I loved Carrie Bebris' Pool of Radiance. I have read it about 5 times and each time, it still entices me into a world of magic, heros, and fantasy. Anyone who loves D&D should really read this book and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Great book with a deep quest and interesting characters.......2006-03-07

I've been a huge fan of fantasy RPG games, including various D&D titles for quite a while. I picked up a collectors edition of Pool of Radiance: ROMD that had the pc game, some accessories and the novel by Carrie Bebris. I finished the game first and then decided to read the novel. Having played the game definitely added to the excitment of reading the book. Many of the big events coincide and enjoying the game allowed me to enjoy the book just as much, if not more.

The characters are very well developed and the setting/ scenery is well written. It was pretty much great from start to finish and I highly recommend this book to a fantasy novel or Forgotten Realms fan! It made me want to hop back into the PC game and play it more, even after beating it.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2003-04-01

Pool of Radiance was a very good novel I read recently. I enjoyed it so much I recommended my friends to read the novel. Reading this book made me realize that reading is fun, well with the proper book its fun. I don't like to read subjects that don't interest me. The reason why I enjoyed this novel is because it's based on Dungeons and Dragons so it's very interesting to read.

The characters are unique and interesting, they all have their differences but they all work well together. My favorite character was Kestrel she was a thief that got her self into helping Corran a Paladin, Glenna a Sorceress and Durwyn a Fighter to keep watch on the Pool of Radiance. The funny part about Kestrel helping keep watch is that she didn't remember because she was drunk when she told this High Mage about the pool, so apparently she volunteered on accident. It's ironic that she is now helping the law but her whole way of life is breaking the law without getting caught.

The authors were able to hold my interests because it was such a good novel. The authors kept putting surprises everywhere, they also put a lot of fighting and they were very descriptive so I don't think that little kids should read this book. Pool of Radiance is three books in one and each book had different authors. They kept me on the edge of my seat for 90 percent of the time.

In conclusion I can say that I learned more about friendship and trust than I knew before. In this book there is a lot of verbal fighting between the friends but in the end they end up holding back their anger and keep going with their expedition. I already recommend this novel to my friends because they are into fantasy kind of novels and I'm sure that they will like this novel, and hopefully recommend it to their friends.

4 out of 5 stars Just like a computer game.......2001-10-30

At least this novelisation was done decently. A rogue, Kestrel, found herself inexplicably drawn into a quest in Myth Drannor to liberate the corrupted Mythal from a dracolich and its gang.

Strangely, while Elminster appeared in the background as the patron, he did not despatch more powerful adventurers even though he should be aware of the critical nature of the situation.

As story-telling goes, the writer made good use of newly introduced characters and gave them enough of "role-playing" such that their backgrounds were gradually fleshed out with consistency and sensibility. A paladin, a fighter, a mage and a rogue started out as strangers to each other, gated to Myth Drannor to pick up on a quest from a fallen group sent previously by Elminster. Like a computer game, they meet the easier foes first, gradually learning more about their quest, clues to the solution, and even found a sanctuary amidst the ruins of Myth Drannor to recuperate from their wounds. They even get to get new members as the story develops.

The author did it in a simple and straight forward manner, lending several twists customary to an RPG. Unlike traditional novels, this one took it from the computer game, without narrating any part from the adversary's point of view. The baddies were just there, having sprung from nowhere, with enough firepower to drive off the phaerimms and baazetus etc from Myth Drannor, but just careless enough to be taken by a small group of mid-level adventurers. Some inconsistencies here, but none really glaring that detracts from a good story.

4 out of 5 stars Pure Fantasy.......2006-08-23

This book certainly embodied the true essence of fantasy. Of a heros... on a quest... and good prevailing over evil... of a comming of age for many characters. To realize that the potential was always there .. but you only had to open the door and take the step out.

The three main characters are .. a mage apretice.. a fighter/cleric.. and a thief/ranger..

mainly sitting at a 'normal good' aligning.. erradicating evil..

as well this book leaves an open ending - ready for future books to fill..

A great book to start in the realms - pretty easy to understand and enjoyable all the way through.

4 out of 5 stars Good book with a solid story, although somewhat hard to believe at times..........2006-07-14

First i'd like to say this is a really good book that was just a bit hard to swallow at times. It was an enjoyable and easy read, with good character development. The story was good and the characters were likable!

My only complaint (no spoilers, don't worry) is that the character Shal's magic goes from apprentice level to SUPER WIZARD POWERS ridiculously fast. That seemed hard to believe being that at the beginning of the book she was just a novice apprentice. By the middle of the book she was taking on a... well, just read the book and you'll see what I mean.

Still it was an overall fun and enjoyable read, and I would recommend it. I just think it could have been a bit more believable in spots.

4 out of 5 stars If a fan of Forgotten Realms, Definite Reccomendation.......2006-06-13

I liked this book. I only gave it four stars, though, as the first three chapters are hard to get through. After the first three chapters, the book picks up a nice pace and the characters begin to flesh out more.

1 out of 5 stars Horrid.......2005-05-06

Man, this books sucks. I just can't read it any more. I HATE not finishing a book, but this book is just too lame. And it looks like the series doesn't get any better until Ruins of Myth Drannor. Life is too short for something this totally unconvincing. If you want to read a good Forgotten Realms series, I HIGHLY recommend the Finder's Stone Trilogy. Starts with Azure Bonds. Those are fun books.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2004-12-03

That book is one of the best in the fantasy world. I think it's so good I have 2 copies and read each at least once a month. this book deserves the top ranking 100 stars!! This book is perfect for ANYONE! NO MATTER WHAT THE AGE!!!!

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars It's a roleplaying product, so it'll be reviewed as a roleplaying product.......2007-07-04

Unlike many of the previous reviewers I haven't played the computer game that this module is apparently based on - I'm going to treat that as a good thing because it will allow me to review this item on its merits (or lack thereof) and not be predisposed to a negative review.

The adventure is unfortunately very linear and the authors have assumed that the players will naturally move from encounter A to encounter B. Any experienced GM will know that a group of PC's can be distracted by the most benign of things - mention there are some shadows moving in the trees as they walk down the path and off they go finding out what the shadows are all about - even though they were only intended to add colour to the scene.

Additionally, the hooks are very weak - but then its been my experience that all hooks for published modules are weak and that is for the simple reason that the writers of these things have absolutely no idea what shape or size individual campaigns are going to be in hence they go for the lowest common denominator - but every module is prefaced with the advisory that individual GM's know the best way to get thier players invovled, so I don't understand why people complain about hooks.

The thing that annoyed me most about this module was the fact that the main battle happens in the castle of Myth Drannor (which by any measure is a big frigging city) and yet the characters are led by the nose to the castle and the big fight in the dungeon. It seems so simplistic as to be laughable (and I suspect here is the strongest link to the computer game).

One final criticism is that of the creature index. I agree with a previous reviewer that having the index listed 'when encountered' is very frustrating; much better to have everything listed alphabetically.

On the good side, I thought the plot was reasonably well constructed and kind of clever having the PC's 'stumble' into it. Unfortuanately that's about it for the good parts, hence why it only gets two stars.

I would advise you only buy this if you're looking for a good way to get dracoliches involved in your campaign, otherwise you're probably better staying away.

1 out of 5 stars Mindless drivel adapted for your pleasure.......2003-07-22

As other reviewers have noted, taking the plotless banality of a hack and slash video game and putting it into print while attempting to pass it off as an actual role-playing product is the height of idiocy. This is something Reynolds seems to enjoy doing to his fans (what there are of them), but I'm surprised Carnes got roped into this project. Save your money, folks.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but could be better.......2002-09-12

If you are a DM looking for a decent adventure to fit into your Forgotten Realms campaign, you could do worse than to run this adventure. The hook to get the players involved is a little weak, but you can always write your own in. It was obviously written before the new (excellent) Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting and Creatures of Faerun were released (it has a Phaerimm listed as a random encounter, and sez it is WAY over the heads of 6th level characters, which is not necessarily true), the monsters and NPC's are listed in full stats at the end of the book, but in order of appearance, which is a little difficult to reference (I like the method that WOTC uses now, listing NPC's & Monsters' stats alphabetically in an index). The story is not bad, certainly better than some of the 3rd party modules I've seen. The adversaries seem a little under-powered in terms of magic items, so DM's may want to beef them up a bit with more equipment. The adversaries can be truly nasty, in my opinion truly fitting of the Cult of the Dragon. A Dungeon Master can get a lot more out of this module if he applies the info on the Cult found in "Lords of Darkness" (which I heartily recommend), as well as "Creatures of Faerun."
It is useable as written, but with a little DM work, it can be a truly memorable adventure.

3 out of 5 stars It is worth a shot........2001-11-22

This game struck my ire in the first five minutes... on the install. It wouldn't let me install it to anything but my main hard drive. I tried installing it to a different drive and it told me I didn't have enough space (30 gigs left). Contacted customer support and they had released a update for it. But that isn't a good way to start on a game... when you spend over an hour trying to get the darn thing to install.

But anyway, onto the game itself.

Once I got into the game it was alright. I haven't got anywhere close to beating it because my interest waned quite a bit. The game is difficult to play because you have some pretty tough things to beat in the start of the game (that is where more frustration set it).

Finally, in the typical WoTC way, you end up.... guess? Yup, in a dungeon. A very large one to boot where everything looks the same. They have some cool interactive options. But they completely change the interface for the whole thing. It doesn't follow your typical Baulder's Gate format for the characters. And it's going by third edition rules (thats a completely different review).

If you have never played a Wizards of The Coast game then this isn't a bad one to start out on. It has a good tutorial that you can go back to throughout the game if need be.

Not a bad game, but certainly not their best.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2001-11-12

Like previous adventures based on computer games, this product proved to be extremely linear and unimaginative. The adventure hooks are extremely weak and it's just assumed that the party will head straight from point A to point B with no deviation whatsoever. The plot is extremely simple - keep the dracolich cultists from realizing their evil plans and free their wrongfully imprisoned slaves in the process. The opposition is supposed to get tougher and tougher as play goes on until you meet the 'big boss' at the end. Aside from being chock-full of typos, I found this product to be uninspiring and, quite frankly, boring. No chance at all that I'll be working this adventure into the ongoing campaign.

5 out of 5 stars So helpful!.......2003-07-17

I was having trouble with Pool of Radiance because there is SO much to do and everything is so spread out. I like to do all the quests and see and experience as much as possible. I got the book for the maps, so I could make sure I got to everything in the game. The book is incredibly useful for that - it has extremely detailed maps and tells you about every single creature/quest/item there is to find and experience in each section of the game.

It also does a pretty good job of describing the characters/skills/traits/etc... but I'm not much of a min-maxer, I just like to play the game. I give it five stars because it did exactly what I wanted it to do - gave me a map and some direction for playing.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Companion to the game........2002-06-09

3 out of 5 stars This guide could use some improvement.......2002-01-06

While I agree with everything the other reviewers said about the description of character classes and the easy-to-read maps with great descriptions of the areas and details of exactly what you will find there, this hint book has two very serious flaws I found.

The first is that in all the "walkthrough" descriptions, in many of the places they tell you what to do to get through the area ONCE YOU GET INTO IT. But they do NOT say, for instance, "before you can get into this area you have to complete such and such quest." I thought I was at a serious impasse early in the game because the book described in the main halls that the word of the dragon was required to open one of the doors, and you had to talk to some creatures there to get the right word. When i first went there, THERE WERE NO CREATURES THERE. They did not make any mention of the need to complete previous quests that would activate the creatures in the area. This is not the only section of the book with this flaw. You can't walk through the areas as they are presented in the book, step by step...there are still a lot of things to figure out and finding the right hint can get very confusing.

The second bad flaw this book had was the incomplete index. For instance, I found something called a "stronghold key" that I could not figure out which door to get open. If you want to ask "what is the stronghold key and which door does it open" the "stronghold key" does not appear in the index, nor does "key, stronghold". Again, this makes finding the right hint you want very difficult...unless you know exactly the area you are in and look up the hint IMMEDIATELY after you find something new, the book is just a pain to search through for the correct hint.

If you just want a general overview of the game and area descriptions, and some good maps to follow, this is a good book to get. If you're looking for an answer to a specific problem, this book will only help you if you are willing to spend a bit of time searching through it...it can take time to find the right solution...very disorganized in that sense.

1 out of 5 stars Why buy a beta?.......2001-10-28

Don't buy it, it's full of bugs. And if you buy it, wait with installing the game until they have released all the patches.
It crash often, the save games gets corrupted and worst of all, the uninstaller have been reported to making havoc with your windows register.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2001-10-09

This truly is one of the better guides I've seen in a long time. With Prima being the larget producer of such books, I generally approach these manuals with more than a little wariness, since the experience is generally hit-and-miss, but I have to say that the Prima guide for Pool of Radiance efficiently and effectively covers all the bases that a good guide should.

The centerpiece of the guide is the walkthrough for the game, which is fairly well written. Of course, considering the fact that this is a Dungeons and Dragons game that they were writing a guide for, they probably didn't have much trouble ahead of them (random encounters are rare, and the guide itself is written like a book and paper adventure key). The maps they provide are well rendered and easy to follow in most cases, and the occasional side tips that they offer are helpful, for the most part.

One thing that I would have liked to see is a little more focus on character creation and subjective advice from the book's editors. As is so often the case with these sorts of guides, the sections on gameplay are little more than reprints of the game documentation. A greater number of sample characters, some expanded elaboration on character design, or another fully illustrated sample party or two would have been a welcome aid. The point of these guides, after all, is to allow the player to more completely experience the game, and it seems as though a lot of potentially useful material in that regard has been cast off.

On the whole, however, the guide is still exceptional, with complete coverage of every location or encounter in the game and, if not exceptional, a respectable amount of character creation advice and explanation on elements of the gameplay rules.

            Description:
Spectral description of thermal emission from fires provides a fundamental basis on which the fire thermal radiation hazard assessment models can be developed. Several field experiments were conducted during the 1970s and 1980s to measure the thermal radiation field surrounding LNG fires. Most of these tests involved the measurement of fire thermal radiation to objects outside the fire envelope using either narrow-angle or wide-angle radiometers. Extrapolating the wide-angle radiometer data without understanding the nature of fire emission is prone to errors. Spectral emissions from LNG fires have been recorded in four test series conducted with LNG fires on different substrates and of different diameters. These include the AGA test series of LNG fires on land of diameters 1.8 and 6m, 35m diameter fire on an insulated concrete dike in the Montoir tests conducted by Gaz de France, a 1976 test with 13m diameter and the 1980 tests with 10m diameter LNG fire on water carried out at China Lake, CA. The spectral data from the Montoir test series have not been published in technical journals; only recently has some data from this series have become available. This paper presents the details of the LNG fire spectral data from, primarily, the China Lake test series, their analysis and results. Available data from other test series are also discussed. China Lake data indicate that the thermal radiation emission from 13m diameter LNG fire is made up of band emissions of about 50% of energy by water vapor (band emission), about 25% by carbon dioxide and the remainder constituting the continuum emission by luminous soot. The emissions from the H"2O and CO"2 bands are completely absorbed by the intervening atmosphere in less than about 200m from the fire, even in the relatively dry desert air. The effective soot radiation constitutes only about 23% during the burning period of methane and increases slightly when other higher hydrocarbon species (ethane, propane, etc.) are burning in the LNG fire. The paper discusses the procedure by which the fire spectral data are used to predict the thermal emission from large LNG fires. Unfortunately, no direct measurements of the soot density or smoke characteristics were made in the tests. These parameters have significant effect on the thermal emission from large LNG fires.
