Book Description

When she died in obscurity in 1960, all her books were out of print. Now, Zora Neale Hurston is recognized as one of the most important and influential modern American writers. This volume, with its companion, "Zora Neale Hurston: Folklore, Memoirs, and Other Writings," brings together for the first time all of Hurston's best works in one authoritative set. It features the acclaimed 1937 novel "Their Eyes Were Watching God," a lyrical masterpiece about a woman's struggle for love and independence. "Jonah's Gourd Vine," based on the story of Hurston's parents, details the rise and fall of a preacher torn between spirit and flesh. "Moses, Man of the Mountain" is a high-spirited retelling of the Exodus story in black vernacular. "Seraph on the Suwanee" portrays the passionate clash between a poor southern "cracker" and her willful husband. A selection of short stories further displays Hurston's unique fusion of folk traditions and literary modernism--comic, ironic, and soaringly poetic.

If Ms Hurston finally gets the readers she deserves, she will take her place among America's finest writers of the 20th Century. She is a joy to read and repays second and third perusals. The oral narrative quality of her writing places her squarely in the company of the best of her Southern contemporaries. She shares their great gifts. By all means, don't deny yourself the pleasure of reading her work.

Book Description

This novel of turn-of-the-century white "Florida Crackers" marks a daring departure for the author famous for her complex accounts of black culture and heritage. Full of insights into the nature of love, attraction, faith, and loyalty, Seraph on the Suwanee is the compelling story of two people at once deeply in love and deeply at odds. The heroine, young Arvay Henson, is convinced she will never find true love and happiness, and defends herself from unwanted suitors by throwing hysterical fits and professing religious fervor. Arvay meets her match, however, in handsome Jim Meserve, a bright, enterprising young man who knows that Arvay is the woman for him, and refuses to allow her to convince him otherwise. With the same passion and understanding that have made Their Eyes Were Watching God a classic, Hurston explores the evolution of a marriage full of love but very little communication and the desires of a young woman In search of herself and her place in the world.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book.......2005-10-15

I am a huge fan of Toni Morrison,in particular Song of Soloman, but after having read Seraph on the Suwanee, I have a new favorite author in Zora Neale Hurston and a new favorite book.

4 out of 5 stars Thematically disconcerting, but often brilliant and funny.......2004-05-16

Hurston once told the author Carl Van Vechten (who, although white, wrote best-selling works--both fiction and non-fiction--about blacks) that she had "hopes of breaking that silly old rule about Negroes not writing about white people." Her last major work, "Seraph on the Suwanee," fulfilled that hope; her lead characters are an impoverished upper-class Southerner, Jim Meserve, and his Southern "cracker" wife, Arvay.

The first 70 pages or so are among the slyest Hurston ever wrote--it's impossible not to chuckle at the description of Jim and Arvay's courtship, especially his handling of her psychosomatic catatonic fit. The novel takes a sharp turn, however, once the couple are married and have three children. Part soap opera, part morality tale, Jim and Arvay's story begins as a clash of the Titans and ends like "The Taming of the Shrew."

As Jim becomes wealthy and rises in social status, Arvay's insecurity increases, and she worries that "he had never taken her for his equal. He was that same James Kenneth Meserve of the great plantations, and looked down on her as the backwoods Cracker." She feels increasingly out of place around their educated, well-off neighbors and even her children. For his part, Jim fears that all his efforts at providing comfort and security to Arvay have come to naught: "He didn't make her out at all. Didn't she want him anymore?" And he feels that Arvay expresses her "love like a coward." What plagues the couple more than anything else is simply an inability to communicate.

Yet it's unclear what message Hurston is trying to convey; at times the "lesson" seems a little creepy. Although Jim never abuses Arvay (in many ways, he's a dashing prince to her Southern Cinderella), the mental and social "tests" to which he subjects her are, at the least, emotionally vexing. Hurston seems to feel that the real problem is Arvay's refusal to mature with her surroundings instead of Jim's expectation that Arvay should appreciate what he's done for her and their family. He clearly loves his wife, but wants her to change. (Sound familiar?) Ultimately, the barometer for success in their relationship is Arvay's ability to redefine herself on Jim's terms, and one wonders if Jim's last name, Meserve, is meant as a wicked pun. (A cynic might argue, hyperbolically, that it's a short skip to the premise of "The Stepford Wives.")

Hurston wrote "Seraph" in 1948, when she had become increasingly conservative, both politically and socially. She was a zealous Republican, she once asserted that "the Jim Crow system works" (although she later claimed she was quoted out of context), and she condemned the Supreme Court decision in Brown vs. the Board of Education. She also joined the Florida Negro Defense Committee largely because she felt the group did not view blacks as "victims"--similar to the way that she seems to lack sympathy for Avray's lack of confidence. One is tempted, then, to read the novel through this prism. Fortunately, however, the book's message is a little more ambiguous than I make it out to be; in the end, "Seraph" describes the emotionally excruciating path necessary to achieve a mutually sympathetic relationship. Whatever the meaning, it's a great story: sometimes funny, often brilliant, and absorbing like a train wreck: you can't take your eyes off Arvay and Jim even when you see they're heading for a collision.

3 out of 5 stars Seraph on the Suwannee.......2001-12-18

"Seraph on the Suwanee" provides interesting dialog details into the lives of the "Florida crackers" (i.e. poor southern whites) in the early 20th century, but at times, it's difficult to follow where this story is going.

The novel follows the marriage of Jim and Arvay Meserve. The novel paints Jim Meserve as an ambitious and resourceful, yet also chauvanistic and sometimes violent man. The central character is the wife, Arvay, who is timid, uneducated, and (overly) sensitive. Told from Arvay's point of view, the problem with the story is that it is essentially one-sided and is more like the story of her life from her point of view. Only toward the later 1/3 of the book is she given a challenge and a mild conflict emerges when she is challenged to prove herself worthy of her husband. Here is where I think the novel fails-we never really see any growth, development, or maturity in Arvay throughout the novel. It is only in the last couple of chapters that she has a "self-awakening" experience caused by the death of her mother. This "self-discovery" and the following reconciliation with Jim is weak and disappointing in my opinion. I enjoyed the book, Hurston is simply a great story teller-- she paced it appropriately, injected lively dialog, believable characters and situations, and provided colorful imagery. However, I think I would have enjoyed this story if it were two-sided; I found myself wanting to know more about Jim, his background, his thoughts and motivation.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2001-03-06

This is my all time favorite novel. Although I already have several copies of this book, I'm buying another copy today.

2 out of 5 stars Not on par with Hurstonýs other works.......2000-11-02

One of the reviewers below stated that admirers of Hurston "won't be disappointed" by this book. I beg to differ: I've read pretty much everything Hurston has written, and I think she is without a doubt one of the best American (and perhaps world) writers of the twentieth century. But "Seraph" was a great disappointment. Hurston simply overreached with this one. By the time I had finished reading it, I found myself wondering what the point of this book was. The story follows the marriage of a Florida couple over several decades. The husband is ambitious and forceful, yet also arrogant and sometimes violent, while the wife is timid and (overly) sensitive. Told from the wife's point of view, the problem with the story is that it essentially goes from a more or less realistic give-and-take between the two to an account of how she tries to prove herself worthy of her husband (there is little in the way of growth on his part by the way, e.g. he never expresses any regret for having acted like a brute during the early years of their marriage). Thus, "Seraph on the Suwanee" basically reads like a romance novel. It's true that anthropologist Hurston provides some interesting details into the lives of the "Florida crackers" (i.e. poor southern whites) in the early 20th century, but this is hardly enough to compensate for the novel's weaknesses. It's hard to believe that the literary genius who wrote "Their Eyes Were Watching God" (among other excellent books) could produce such a lackluster work

The Ace's Dream I've always been lucky, although you wouldn't necessarily know it to look at me. Take now, for instance, 15,000 feet off the ground in the seat of a baby Nieuport, Archie bursting shells all around me, German Pfalz buzzing around like someone stirred up a wasps' nest, machine guns tracing lines of fire through the air. But not a single bullet-hole marring the canvas of my Nieuport, much less me. Like I said, lucky. A Pflaz roars past, guns chattering. I pull back on the stick hard, pulling up my machine's nose and climbing up after him. I roll to the side and come up right behind. The Hun pilot doesn't even see me. With a grin I get him in my sights and hit the trigger on the paired machine guns mounted on the nose of my machine. They yammer out 650 rounds a minute, tracers lighting the way to the Pfalz's tail. I see smoke pour out in a steady stream and the Pfalz starts to go into a dive, the wind fanning the flames spreading across his tail. He! 's finished. I don't bother watching him go down, not when there are so many other tempting targets to deal with. I climb up to 20,000, the ceiling of my little Nieuport, and look down, spotting another Pflaz some 4,000 feet below. I bank to the left and come down in a dive, putting the Hun directly in my sights. Machine guns roar and the tracers announce my attack, but too late. The Pfalz banks one way, then the other, trying to get away, but I stay on him, my rounds ripping through canvas and cracking framework, looking for a vital spot or the pilot himself. I find it when some rounds reach the Pfalz's engine, which starts to smoke and the machine goes into a long, slow dive, trailing smoke like a flag of surrender. Making a close pass, I give the Hun pilot an ironic salute as he starts to drop, almost close enough to imagine he can hear me, even over the roar of the wind and the crackle of the flames starting to spout from his crippled engine. "When you get to ground, tell 'em Nathan Zachary sent you!"

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book based on the popular character.......2007-05-07

This book is the prequel to the computer game and gives a really good back story. It follows how Nathan Zachary got his start and set himself up as a pirate of the air. There were a few mix-ups compared to the game, but the book explains better and makes more sense, if you liked the character, read it. Otherwise the world of this book is amazing on its own.

4 out of 5 stars Great, A must for anyone who loves an exiting read.......2001-01-09

I must say that this is one of the best books I have read in a long time. I own the Crimson Skies computer game and love it also. This story kept me hooked to the book, I couldnt put it down. The only reosen I gave it 4 stars insead of 5 is because in some areas it gets kinda cheesy and there are some noticeable errors throughout the book, other than that it is a simply riveting story and I was sad to finish the last page.

5 out of 5 stars Good background material on a recurring character.......2000-12-20

Nathan Zachary pops up a lot in CS fiction, such as "Wings of Fortune #1: Rogue Flyer" and some of the online short stories at the game's Website, and this brought me up to speed on him. The dogfight scenes were exciting, although some of the World War One dogfight manuevers like the Vrille and Renversement were lost on someone who's used to the more-modern Immellmann, Split-S, High Yo-Yo and Scissors. It requires familiarity with the game to make complete sense, but it's easy to read and quite enjoyable.

The '25, '61, '78, '79, and '92 national championships, the first game under Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant, the Alabama-Tennessee rivalry, the Alabama-Auburn rivalry, and twelve more power-packed memorable moments make up the legend of Alabama Football. Eli Gold brings these memories to life with the same clarity and fervor that fans have come to love as they listen to football on the radio.

Featured are legendary Alabama players and coaches including Joe Namath, Johnny Musso, Kenny Stabler, Gene Stallings, Harry Gilmer, Don Hutson, and other names that are still part of everyday conversation in Alabama, regardless of when they attended the university. So much of what was great at Alabama is because of the leadership and influence of Bear Bryant, and his story is told as well as his part in the story of every one of these important moments.

Set roughly in chronological order with photographs throughout, Crimson Nation is a journey back through time that every true Alabama fan must own.

4 out of 5 stars An Easy-Read book on the Crimson Tide.......2007-01-18

As a life-long Alabama fan, I was excited to read Eli Gold's new book on the Crimson Tide. Written in typical Eli Gold style, the book was an easy read that makes you feel you're sitting around a table with other Bama fans talking about and reliving the great moments in Alabma football history. The chapters on former UA President George H. Denny, Wallace Wade, Harry Gilmer, Don Hutson and Frank Thomas were really good and informative, but the stories in the chapters on Joe Namath, Pat Trammell, Kenny Stabler, etc. really offered no new insights and would be well-known by old-timers like myself. Overall, it is still a good book and would make a great read for any Alabama fan

4 out of 5 stars Nice overview of Bama history by the Voice of the Tide.......2006-11-03

When Eli Gold took over as the play-by-play announcer for the Crimson Tide radio broadcasts, I was initially put off by his high-pitched voice. After decades of classical callers like John Forney, Paul Kennedy, and Doug Layton, Gold sounded downright shrill. But he has grown on me over time - and his voice sure cuts through the din of a crowd!

Eli has had sports connections within the state for years and it certainly shows in this volume. There are anecdotes to spare. Honestly, many of the stories are well-worn to old-timers like me. But if you're a relative newcomer, if you're making your first Tide-related book purchase, or if you grew up in the 1960s and '70s and simply love to relive the days of perfection (sigh), you can't go wrong with this one.

5 out of 5 stars Warm and insightful ... a great read for any sports fan .......2006-08-30

Eli Gold, the voice of NASCAR and University of Alabama football, came to radio via his humble roots in Brooklyn, NY. How he did, and how he became such an integral part of the Alabama family, are an interesting sidebar to a larger story that Gold weaves--a rich tapestry of football, culture, and camraderie.

Gold has done his homework, but this book doesn't get bogged down in the arcane. It's simply a warm, broad overview of Alabama football history, including some of the key coaches, players, games, characters, broadcasters, locations and moments that make Alabama football such a national treasure.

One of the strengths of the book is that Gold writes like he talks--you can really "hear" him as you read, which is a good thing, given that Gold is one of our nation's finest sportscasters. He is also gracious, and goes out of his way to honor his colleagues and predecessors in the broadcast booth. His descriptions are colorful and accurate...and always interesting.

This is an excellent book; a must for any Alabama fan, but also enjoyable for fans of sports everywhere.

If you are a big alabama fan like I am then you will like this book. It is simple and well written and gives a brief and short history of some of the teams. It majors on the late great "Bear" but over-all is a very enjoyable book. Michael Beck- Florence, Alabama

                4 out of 5 stars Entertaining Read!.......2007-08-17

I found this Rogue's book to be just as entertaining as the other 3 books. Whether or not Tazi should not be a rogue is irrelevent, I liked it . I hope there will be more Rogues books in this series.

2 out of 5 stars Blew it at the finish.......2007-08-11

Author Voronica Whitney-Robinson follows up her book "Sands of the Soul" (which is not required to read this book) with another tale featuring Thazienne Uskevren, a thief/rogue who comes from a wealthy family but is extremely tomboyish (but, of course, she's still drop-dead gorgeous) and has a history of minor rebellion from her parents. I thought that her previous effort, "Sands of the Soul," was below-average (in writing and plot), but I was hoping "The Crimson Gold" would redeem that previous debacle with a more solid effort. For much of the book, it did.

The storyline has our heroine traveling to the ruthless lands of Thay, ruled by the power hungry Red Wizards. At first, we don't know why she's there, and really don't discover the reason until the 2nd half of the book. Nevertheless, except for the last 50 pages, I enjoyed the trials Thazienne was forced to overcome and the build-up for what should have been a great ending. There was lots of Red Wizard intrigue to chew on, and I was very interested to see how it would all turn out. And then, it happened. Everything just fell apart at the end, and story not only lost momentum, but became entirely laughable and just plain ridiculous. It was awful, really. I won't give spoilers, as that's not fair to potential readers, but it was a real shame how much potential the plot had built for itself, only to be utterly destroyed.

"The Crimson Gold" is a standalone book. Although there's room for a following novel, the tale ends right here. Don't come into this one expecting to be fulfilled. The buildup was very good, but to say it fizzled would be an understatement . . . I think "imploded" is a better word. Sadly (or not, depending on your opinion), this will likely be the last novel about Thazienne, as Ms. Whiteney-Robinson is no longer an active writer.

1 out of 5 stars Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's Thazienne Uskreven!.......2007-01-25

I usually start my reviews with positive comments, followed by negative ones. This time, I'm going to do it other way around.

                This book is all wrong.

The lead character is so perfect, to the point of being terribly annoying. She is so smart, athletic, witty, pretty, sexy, strategically brilliant, lucky, emotionally stable and fearless that Superman himself would be ashamed. I can't give way examples of mentioned traits without giving away spoilers, but trust me I'm not being cynic or spiteful, but merely realistic. The villains (the whole bunch of Thay's zulkirs and other Red Wizards) are so simplified and outright stupid, that it is really insulting. They actually let themselves be ordered by slaves. Characters have no plausible motivations behind their actions, and contradict themselves page after page. This book disregards (a mild word) all the good work Wizards of the Coast developers have done in and around the land of Thay in the last few years. The villains have a tendency of explaining their scheming to their enemies, and all of the characters have a tendency to speak to themselves (or "to no one in particular" as the author likes to put it). The plot is choppy, but otherwise is not as bad as the rest of the elements in this book. There are a lot of logical errors in it, but that goes on the editor(s). I liked Whitney-Robinson's book in the Spider Queen series, and I really can't perceive the reason behind this novel's such poor quality. I have a feeling that this book was written with a lot of love for its main character and minimal effort otherwise.

Otherwise, I liked one of the supporting characters, Justikar, and that is probably the only thing I liked. It might have been different if I was under ten years of age. In fact, this book might be well suited for younger audience.

Besides Elminster Series (I know Greenwood has a lot of fans who won't agree with me on this one), and first three books of Avatar Series, probably the worst novel to come out of TSR/WotC publishing.

                1 out of 5 stars Not a Story of a Rogue.......2006-05-24

My biggest complaint about the book is that it does not belong in the series "The Rogues." I have read the other books in the series and enjoyed them. I find rogues the most interesting character because they acheive results through cunning. Magic users just nuke everything in sight, warriors seem to be able to absorb enough damage to bring down a T-rex, but rogues need to be clever. Well, forget about that in this book. The main character Tazi has about as much subtlty as King Kong. She seems to simply be a fighter, as far as I can tell. Give you an example, which may give away a little story. When she rushes to confront the "big bad" enemy at the end instead of trying to sneak up on him and backstab him (as any normal self respecting rogue would do given the chance) she calls out and challenges him to one-on-one combat. Which also results in a completely unbelieveable confrontation between Tazi and this opponent who is about ten times bigger and stronger than she, in which she very unbelieveably wins. A backstab might have been beleiveable (since we all know rogues can dispatch just about anything if they can sneak up on it) but her adoption of the might warrior persona was out of place in a book about rogues, and just not credible. I wanted to see more disarming traps, sneaking past guards, picking locks -- that is, thief-like behavior.

Some of the details about Thay were interesting but I got tired of the constant preaching about slavery. The author obviously dislikes slavery, but I think the reader got the message, the book took on a moralistic tone. Not to mention her depictions of conditions of some of the slaves were so unrealistic and exaggerated that it detracted from the book. I also did not find the characters compelling. The two "sides" in the book were both pretty worthless and evil, so the reader didn't care who won.

So if you are thinking of this series "The Rogues" read the other three books and skip this one.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not great either.......2005-08-15

It seems to me the reviews below had to look at minor things to find faults with this book. They need to look at what this book was meant to be. It was meant to be a continuation of the stand alone novels in the Rogue series set in the Forgotten Realms.

I think this book was entertaining for what it was meant to be. The author did a good job of telling the story. If you want to complain, you can say that nothing new, meaning things that haven't been done before, occured in this book. Yet, that doesn't really detract from the story.

It was well told and fun to read.

                  Book Description

Bear's Boys is a collection of inspiring stories featuring 36 men whose lives were altered by their encounter with the legendary coach while they were players and coaches at Alabama. The stories of star players such as Joe Namath, Ken Stabler, Marty Lyons, Bob Baumhower, Ozzie Newsome, and Gene Stallings show how the Coach forever changed them as young men and ball players on the field and later in life after football.

When Bob Baumhower was released from the Dolphins in 1986, he immediately did what Coach Bryant would have done: he made a plan. Instead of feeling sorry for himself, he snapped into practical mode. First, he sold his boat and his big house. Then, he systematically began exploring business opportunities and setting goals for the next several decades of his life. When he started his first restaurant, he knew he had yet another chance to apply the principles he learned on the football field in real life. "Coach Bryant said there's a lot of blood, sweat and guts between dreams and success," Baumhower said. "That's true in the restaurant business. . . . Today, every success I have, every win that I have, in my opinion, came from the fact that Coach Bryant cared enough to talk to me and turn the light on for me

Includes stories for such men as 1) Gene Stallings 2) Bob Baumhower 3) Dwight Stephenson 4) Joe Namath 5) Ken Stabler 6) Johnny Musso 7) Barry Krauss 8) Marty Lyons 9) John Mitchell 10) John Croyle 11) Jerry Duncan 12) Leroy Jordan 13) Ozzie Newsome 14) Billy Neighbors 15) Cornelius Bennett 16) John Hannah 17) Mal Moore 18) Joey Jones 19) Terry Jones 20) Tony Nathan 21) Wilbur Jackson 22) Don McNeal 23) Ray Perkins 24) Bill Battle 25) Sylvester Croom

                          Book Description

After you read the book you'll know why I'm dedicating my book to every Jew in the world, past and present! Thank you , thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart! Sincerely, to Israel with love because of Romans 11:15, 25 and 28, 31, and 32! (Both Romans and Hebrews were tenderly written to Jews first!) The idea for Crimson and Gold came to me one morning as I stood praying in my living room. My eyes fell on a small replica of the Wailing Wall I'd purchased while in Jerusalem. Artistic leanings had led me to "doctor up" the little icon several months earlier. Suddenly, the story line for this very book and movie ran through my mind. It so surprised me I recall saying out loud, "Oh, my Lord! What a story!" Four American Jews go to Israel for different reasons, yet they're all searching for similar answers. Two of them have very serious issues to overcome while the other two have had their problems solved in America. Eventually, the four strangers meet at the Wailing Wall where friendships begin, dreams are realized, dark pasts uncovered, love develops and eventually all problems are solved. Their common ambition is to change the world for the better. My four protagonists meet one the antagonists also from the States. His plan to change the world negatively is antithetical to the plans of the heroes. Love, hate, jealousy, personal triumph, soul discovery, intrigue, passion, and the miraculous are played out between Jerusalem, Joppa and Telaviv! Very delicate issues are handled tastefully and moral issues the world has long debated are solved! Questions which have gone unanswered for centuries are answered in this novel! The intent to murder and finally murder is committed. A murder in America is linked across the ocean to Israel. This love story is very different with values and morals foreign to today's society! It's a love story reminiscent of the 1950's though no time line is given. It will linger in your

                          Book Description

Crimson & Gold: The Denver Pioneers' Magical Run to the 2004 National Championship follows the Pioneers through their incredible, unpredictable drive to the program's first national championship in 35 years.

Go behind the scenes and learn the thoughts of the players and coaching staff as the Pioneers rallied from a two-goal deficit in the national semifinals against Minnesota-Duluth, and why, at the end of their incredible journey, there was little doubt they would hold off a late Maine power play in the title game to secure the program's sixth national championship. Then join the celebration as Crimson & Gold follows the raucous Denver homecoming that greeted the team and their hard-earned trophy.

The electricity that surrounded the Pioneers throughout their NCAA tournament run, from their thrilling victories against Miami of Ohio and North Dakota in the NCAA West Regional to the frenzied atmosphere of the Frozen Four, is recaptured through the insightful writing of Pat Rooney who covered the team all season for the Rocky Mountain News.

Included in Crimson & Gold are comprehensive stat pages, biographies on each national championship player, and recaps of DU's glorious hockey history, all wrapped in a volume bursting with an impressive collection of action photos.

Rooney has done a nice job tying the ups and downs of the championship season around the theme of For the Team, For the Journey, For the Event--a mantra passed along by former DU hockey legend Keith Magnuson who tragically passed away in December '03. The book provides a inside look at one of the top programs in college hockey. It is interesting to read how close this team was to falling completely apart before their miraculous run through the NCAA tournament. Rooney was able to get numerous quotes from both coaches and players. Game articles from the Rocky Mountain News are a nice touch.

The book is pitched as a commemorative piece which it is certainly that. Well-done and an enjoyable read.
