1 out of 5 stars My Word WhatTrash!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-11-23

For the last 5 years I have read 1 book a week. This is by far the worst book I have ever read. The other reviewers who thought this had some merit are dreaming at best. I could write better and as you can tell from this review I can't write. If I ever have a labotomy, I will read this again and reconsider my review.
Trash. Lousy. Junk. Can I rate this less than 1 star?

2 out of 5 stars This is Bad..........2001-05-14

You ever listened to one of those audio books that is so bad, yet you have find out how it ends? This is it. Maybe it's because I haven't listened to the other books, but the author gives a great recap that I didn't have to worry about that. My problem was that the characters were totaly unlikeable and there were tons of inconsistantces. First of all, the characters. I didn't like anyone, though Ruby wasn't too bad. Like parts of the story, some of them get a little inconsistant. At first Fanny is a strong-willed woman and then reverts to a pathetic figure when the plot demands it. I also think Ms. Michaels wasted Celia. What could've been a decent woman who happened to be a bit of a goldigger is quickly revealed as your run-of-the-mill femme fatale. I know that I probably have a lot of the fans mad, but continue to hear me out. That over, now the consistantcies. If this family is so rich, how come they act like they're poor? I'm no expert on rich folks, but I think that a family as wealthy as them wouldn't expect their wives to clean and cook. Also, Thronton Chickens is suppose to be a multi-million dollar business then why does it seem that Ruby is doing all the work for what seems like it's described as a small farm. And Celia's baby, I think Ms. Michaels was hinting that it was Birg's even though he hadn't touched since she they got back from that jungle. There's some other things I'd mention, but I don't have the room. Let's just say the only reason this book doesn't fail is becasue of the great recap of everything and you still want to find out how it ends. Love, Yaoi Huntress Earth

4 out of 5 stars Fast Reading.......1998-10-20

I read this book without having read the 2 previous books in the series. It was fairly easy catching up on who the characters were. One thing I found annoying is that during conversations, characters would bring up things that other characters had done throughout the book, but there seemed to be no relevence to the conversation. It is almost as if Miss Michaels was trying to remind the reader what had happened previously. It seemed unnecessary to me. I am, however, looking forward to reading Vegas Heat and Vegas Rich.

5 out of 5 stars Great book. Could read it again........1998-08-15

Vegas Sunrise was really great. Enjoyed the whole series of these Vegas books by Fern Michaels. They just keep getting better. Loved the way she did this one though. Would love another one. Onto Finder's Keepers next.

      Book Description

      Vegas Rich
With a heart full of dreams, Sallie Coleman leaves Texas and heads west determined to get as far from the squalor of her dirt poor beginnings. With its shifting sands, smoky saloons and bingo palaces, Las Vegas seems like a paradise. A paradise where an extraordinary twist of fate makes Sallie the most powerful businesswoman in Nevada. Suddenly she is rich. With the help of Philip Thornton, the handsome Bostonian, Sallie is transformed into Vegas's most elegant first lady. Philip gives her two sons, Simon and Ash. One will bring her great joy, the other, heartbreak.

      Vegas Heat
The powerful story of the Thornton dynasty. . . of Fanny's twin sons, Sage and Brich: alienated from each other, one is content in his conventional life while the other's search for happiness leads to tragedy - and renewed hope. It is the story of Fanny's two daughters: Sunny, betrayed by her husband, fighting a battle no woman should ever have to face. . . Billie, whose obsessive devotion to the Thorntons' children's clothing empire has kept her from finding love. It is also the story of Fanny's search for her own roots. . . and her relationship with Marcus Reed, the wealthy but mysterious businessman who promises her a passion she has been denied for too long.

      Vegas Sunrise
Fanny Thornton, the proud matriarch of the Thornton dynasty, will do anything for her family. Her four children, now grown, mean everything to her, as does Babylon, the most dazzling casino in Las Vegas and the Thorntons' crowning achievement. But her children have dispersed across the globe, and so she chooses Jeff, the illegitimate son of her deceased husband, to run the casino. But Jeff has plans of his own, and soon devises a scheme to turn Fanny's four children against her. As the siblings vie for their rightful heritage, deceit, distrust, and thwarted dreams of power threaten to divide the Thorntons once and for all.

4 out of 5 stars Great for commuting to work.......2002-10-03

I am sick and tired of commuting to and from work and listening to the same old song and dance on the radio so I picked these up at Cosco one night and thought I'd give it a try. It was great mindless entertainment. I wouldn't say they were Hemingway or even Oprah Club Books, but they were pure entertainment. I loved the storyline, with the Veags backdrop and I will be on the lookout for the Texas series on cassette or maybe some other Fern Michaels books. I'll save the thought provoking reading for my actual books and the senseless entertainment for the audiobooks.

      5 out of 5 stars Vegas Rich/Vegas Heat/ Vegas Sunrise.......2002-03-21

Have read all three books they are great could not put the first one down and then I could not wait for the other to come out. Then they were past to my mother n law and have since went through the family and now to the neighbors so my paper backs are about worn out now!

From the supplier: Marc Gardner, former vice president of Colombia/HCA's Sunrise hospital, discussed the scandals involved in the management and profitability of the hospital. He resigned from the hospital due to its profit-oriented strategy. The hospital reduced its cost of operations by decreasing its staff which led to medication errors. Other corrupt practices done by the hospital were manipulation of Medicare billings and excessive physician referral payments. The hospital's practice is being reviewed by the FBI.

The school year is coming to a close, and that means one thing: final exams! Ai is pretty confident about the academic part, but as for the psychic tests, let's just say his head is spinning. And to make matters worse, some of the envious students are setting out to make sure Ai's first year at the Psychic Academy is his last. Attendance is definitely required for this next volume of Psychic Academy.

4 out of 5 stars THERE ARE HATERS AT THIS SCHOOL!.......2005-08-22

Well, it's time for final exams at Psychic Academy and we're not talking about a test with pen and paper. The class is divided up into three-person teams to search for a 500-year old holy tree in the forest surrounding a sacred temple. Ai, Orina, and Kyaru begin searching but are interrupted by some of their enemies. Tanja, the bully from Class A who has a hankering to defeat Ai, teams up with an equally dastardly girl named Purse, who wants to stick it to Mew. What starts out as a simple ego-trip fight might just lead to someone's death. And then, to make matters worse, Ren, the school's street thug, is arriving back at school after a suspension, and he too wants to knock Ai down a peg or two.

Ok, Psychic Academy is not going to win any prizes for originality. It comes off as a fan serviced Harry Potter for a more mature audience. Like Rowling writing for 17 or 18 year olds. But it's still interesting and the art and characters are first-rate. The tangled beginnings of a love triangle are handled very tenderly and the humor almost always works.

5 out of 5 stars CRAZY LITTLE THING.......2005-09-04

As Ai tries his best to do good in school, the mysterious girl from Volume 2, FaFa (who happens to share a body with her brother, Ren) kidnaps Ai to have some fun on the town. While his friends desperately search for him, they learn the truth about FaFa. She has no powers of her own, instead serving as a conduit for others psychic powers, almost like Rogue from the X-men, she absorbs psychic energy from others, which also allows her to control the minds of others. The problem is that she has no control over her powers and will very likely hurt innocent people! With her on the streets, it also gives impetus to a growing group of normal humans who see psychics as a danger. Calling themselves "aura hunters", they seek to eliminate that threat! Add to this Ai's continuing conflict over who he likes better, Sahra or Mew!

What a good series not meant to be taken seriously! It's more like the X-Men without all the convoluted baggage and history. The characters are great and the romance intriguing. With a bit of fan service thrown in too. Where else can you see a talking pink rabbit with a Bronx accent, I ask you? Good book.

5 out of 5 stars after reading it all, this is what I think of it.......2007-01-04

first of all you should know that my english isn't perfect ^^

This manga has a boring start indeed, but I hate reading anything without ending it, and I'm glad that I did it with this one cuz the manga gets very good at the last 4 or 5 volumes.

if someone spoiled the story for you then reading the manga is meaningless, so I'll just give you some good and bad points about it

                    good points :
                    - the art is good and you will see so much movements and nice shots that you will like
                    - the chapters has their own fun so it isn't just " how it will ends "
                    - there is romance and tragedy things but of course not in the first volumes
                    - there is some comedy as well
                    - it has many important characters and it has unexpected ending

                    bad points :
                    - as I said it has boring slow story at first
                    - the fights are boring, they just use skills, defending or attacking, and then one of them rape the other and they say "wow! that person is great", it isnt life or death fights except those in the final volume

note that the girls all of them are busty here, and remember if you don't like the 2 main girls "you will see them in the covers" then you don't need to read it

1 out of 5 stars Who knew that psychic power is proportional to bra size?.......2006-12-26

I thought I'd throw in an opinion that isn't from a male who reads fanservice manga in his spare time. Psychic Academy is a fanservice manga. Get used to it. Yes, it is not-so-subtly disguised fanservice wrapped around a story that a three-year-old could have thought up.

The "story" is about a boy named Ai Shiomi who is sent to an academy for students with psychic powers. Unfortunately, he has no idea what his powers are. To make matters worse, his brother, Zerod Aimu Kyupura Pa Azaraku Vairu Rua Darogu, a.k.a. "The Vanquisher of the Dark Overlord", is a teacher at the school and continually embarrasses Ai with his displays of brotherly love. Meanwhile, Ai gets stuck in a love triangle between Orina, his childhood best friend, and Mew, a mysterious and powerful girl with one of the stupidest names ever. Finally, there's Master Boo, the telepathic rabbit with an annoying accent, who climbs on Ai's back on page 24 and doesn't get off for the rest of the manga.

When the first volume of a manga starts with an introduction, it's a bad sign. Why must the author explain everything that happened before the story started? Why can't he explain as the story progresses? Well, he is too busy with the fanservice.

Psychic Academy is a lame rehash of every other "kid with super powers/magical abilities goes to a special school" story you've ever read. Ai undoubtedly has amazing powers that no one has ever seen, and will probably rise up and do...something. I'm not really sure what, since there has been no antagonist introduced so far.

The characters are very two-dimensional, and not at all believable. The Vanquisher of the Dark Overlord subplot started out as a promising comedic idea, but the author never did anything with the character. Unlike most characters in this situation, Ai doesn't try to find out what his psychic ability is. Instead he spends his time whining that he doesn't have any special abilities (when it's pretty clear he does) and how he wants his brother to leave him alone.

At the school, all the kids and teachers are named after their auras. Who decides what the aura's name is? I'm not really sure, but whoever names the auras is a sadist. Why else would some poor souls have names like Shining Dappler, Boo Velka Receptor Arba, Sahra, Mew, and, of course, Zerod Aimu Kyupura Pa Azaraku Vairu Rua Darogu? Doesn't it make you wish you had an aura?

The author has not thought some of his scenes through. In one of the first scenes, Ai is walking to school when he sees a baby falling off a balcony. What mother would leave a baby on a balcony by himself? How can a baby who cannot stand manage to get on top of a balcony railing? Let's say the baby can fly. If the baby can fly high enough to sit on the railing, why would he need to be rescued? Why couldn't he fly back to the balcony? Oops, you've fallen in a plot hole!

Instead, the author has expended his energy creating irritating characters. Master Boo is possibly the most annoying mascot ever. He is not cute, not huggable, and has the most disturbing accent ever invented. Perhaps he thinks he's a gangster? Perhaps a bad translation is at fault, but when Master Boo utters gems like "Sharpy-Sharp-Sharp. I'm chiselin' an arrowhead outta you, Buck," who needs Shakespeare?

Now we come to the biggest problem: the fanservice. There is endless fanservice, which is especially shocking since the manga is rated T for 13 and up. This manga really should have been rated OT for 16 and up.

Fanservice includes naked girls in bath tubs, girls dressing or undressing, topless girls halfway through dressing or undressing, panty shots, girls with their clothes falling off for no apparent reason, girls showing so much skin that you wonder why they're bothering to wear anything at all, naked water fairies (let's get REALLY CLOSE so that you know they're naked!), and many more. Every girl in the book is also suffering from Truly Astronomical Thoracic Appendages Syndrome. It's a little known syndrome that afflicts many girls in fanservice heavy manga. Their thoracic appendages are so enormous that you wonder where they find clothing large enough to fit over their sizable body parts. Heck, these girls probably have trouble finding bras the size of circus tents. The most amazing thing is that all of them are suffering from the same disease. Every female, be she student, teacher, or innocent bystander, is suffering from the dreaded Truly Astronomical Thoracic Appendages Syndrome. Clearly, they should spend less time learning new spell power ups, and more time searching for a cure to the pandemic. Not only do they suffer from this terrible disease, they also feel the need to flout their symptoms by not wearing bras while jumping around (probably because they couldn't find any big enough) and sticking their afflicted body parts in other people's faces. You don't have to wear a bra if you don't want to, but if you're going into combat, wouldn't you want to restrain your swinging body parts? This is what sports bras were invented for, girls.

Ai seems continually amazed by the girls' terrible luck and makes sure to check that their thoracic appendages are real every couple of pages by grabbing, squishing, and squeezing in the appropriate places. The girls allow this behavior, but then again, perhaps Truly Astronomical Thoracic Appendages Syndrome decreases your brain size.

Many of the characters are also suffering from Artist Likes Wrinkles Too Much Syndrome. Many of the characters wear outfits which have wrinkles in completely illogical places, such as across the upper part of the chest, above their Truly Astronomical Thoracic Appendages, on the Truly Astronomical Thoracic Appendages, in the crotch area, across the waist (but running in the wrong direction), and across the shoulders. I may not be an artist, but I can tell when things look wrong and this looks seriously wrong.

So, please don't buy Psychic Academy unless you think that fanservice is a wonderful thing that should be encouraged. There are better manga out there, and you shouldn't be wasting your time and money on this hyena offal.

5 out of 5 stars I never realized how large your breasts had to be to preform magic..........2006-08-15

I found this a highly enjoyable read. The protagonist(Ai) is forced to attend a school for children with Psychic abilities. The problem is, he doesn't have any powers (as for as he knows). He is however, the son of The Vanquisher of The Dark Overlord (no pressure), who also happens to be the newest teacher Aura teacher (Aura is the term used for magical ability). Upon entering, Ai meets Boo. A psychic rabbit with a telepathic connection to Ai, who decids to help Ai realize his power and provide mostly bland comic-relief.

My personal favorite aspect is Ai's forming relationship with two different girls. Orina, the childhood friend who tries to be nice, but gets blown off by Ai most of the time. And Mew, the sexy, mysterious girl who helps Ai realize his power. There is a small amount of fan-service, but nothing too big.

If you enjoy romance, fantasy, or comedy mangas in general, there is absolutley no reason you shouldn't buy this.

                    4 out of 5 stars I DON'T WANT TO GO TO SCHOOL!.......2005-07-26

In the world of Psychic Academy, psychic powers in the population have been on the rise. And it's a good thing too because the forces of evil have also been increasing. The most gifted of these psychics, Zero, defeated the "Dark Overlord" and is now teaching at the Psychic Academy, a school for adolescents with psychic gifts. Most of the time, these powers show up in the first years of life, but for Zero's brother, Ai, he has just shown potential before entering high school, and has been dragged out of his everyday life. He doesn't want to go because he believes that he has no powers, and plus how can he ever live up to the shadow of his famous brother? One good thing is that his childhhood friend that has a crush on him, Orina, is also attending the Academy. He also picks up a pink rabbit named Master Boo, whose voice only he can hear, who guides him on his rocky way of discovering his abilities. Another friend that he makes is Mew, a girl with attitude and beauty who supposedly has a soul 100% compatible with Ai! While most of the Academy looks in awe at Ai because he is Zero's brother, there are some at the school who look on him with complete hostility and might even want to hurt him! It's up to Ai to prove that he belongs there, to others and to himself.

Psychic Academy reminds one of the Harry Potter novels in that a young boy is sent to a school to work on abilities he never knew he had up till this point. But beyond those similarities, this manga carves its own niche. Katsu Aki's storytelling ability is very clear and easy to follow, even during the action sequences. There is not a lot of clutter in the art. The characters are interesting and make up a little for the cliched plot. There's also a lot of humor here, especially from Master Boo, the rabbit.

                    3 out of 5 stars Overrated anime/manga? 3 and a half stars........2005-07-10

I thought this book was okay. Not actually for any of that hocus-pocus stuff, but for the developing romance between Ai and some of the other buxom females. It's kind of lame though, a formula repeated throughout a lot of the anime world. A cute guy has a chance to hook up with all these cute girls, and is really confused on who to choose. Unrealistic ethics in my view.

The bishounen art direction is nice, but the fact every female in this manga has gigantic breasts is also a questionable ethic.
Magic duels in this book are kind of a Harry Potter thing. I can't say I was really interested in the acion scenes though. The standard flashy anime background got kind of lame in this book. I can understand male appeal, but the shower scenes very so often were inappropriate.

IN short, the book was mildly entertaining, humor was kind of low, but the developing romance was very entertaining.

I'd have written a more insightful review, but my computer is on the fritz.

                    Book Description

*From the prolific creator of 18 manga titles including the best-selling series Escaflowne *TOKYOPOP to release animated series on DVD Fall 2005

A kiss here, a touch there, at a love motel... the perfect setting for a steamy romance just between Ai and Orina, or so they thought. Feelings between Ai and Orina are heating up rather well until Ai senses Mew's cries for help in her fight against Tokimitsu. Ai rushes to Mew's aid and leaves Orina in the dust. Could Ai be the boy from the past Mew has been looking for all her life?

                    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I'LL SEE YOU IN MY DREAM?.......2005-12-24

Ai is finally fixing to bust a move on Orina as their bodies meet scantily clothed in a love hotel....but then Ai gets an emergency call from Mew, who is locked in a battle with a powerful ADC agent and he drags Orina along to rescue her. Of course this leaves all parties a little unfulfilled. Mew doesn't want to be around Ai because her feelings for him are getting stronger and stronger and she doesn't want to mess up Orina's relationship with him. This all might be settled by the impending arrival of the "para dream", a vision shared by all psychics in which they see themselves on a beach alone. Except Ai DID see someone the last time he had the dream.....Mew! Mew has some recollection of the dream but has not figured out that it was Ai she saw. This time there will be no mistaking.

The last volume of Psychic Academy dwelled a little bit too much on the romance angle but Volume 7 shows a return to balance. The art is beautiful and you've come to really care about the characters by this point. Katsu Aki really built up the suspense of who, if anyone, Ai would see in the para dream very well. You also want to see who Ai is going to end up with at the end of the series. There's also lots of fan service beyond the 13+ age recommendation on this book. Great series.
