Book Description
Critically acclaimed experimental, literary fiction by the famous Croatian exile author, now in paperback. The Museum of Unconditional Surrenderby the renowned Yugoslavian writer Dubravka Ugresicbegins in the Berlin Zoo, with the contents of Roland the Walrus's stomach displayed beside his pool (Roland died in August, 1961). These objectsa cigarette lighter, lollipop sticks, a beer-bottle opener, etc.like the fictional pieces of the novel itself, are seemingly random at first, but eventually coalesce, meaningfully and poetically. Written in a variety of literary forms, The Museum of Unconditional Surrender captures the shattered world of a life in exile. Some chapters re-create the daily journal of the narrator's lonely and alienated mother, who shops at the improvised flea-markets in town and longs for her children; another is a dream-like narrative in which a circle of women friends are visited by an angel. There are reflections and accounts of the Holocaust and the Yugoslav Civil War; portraits of European artists; a recipe for Caraway Soup; a moving story of a romantic encounter the narrator has in Lisbon; descriptions of family photographs; memories of the small town in which Ugresic was raised. Addressing the themes of art and history, aging and loss, The Museum is a haunting and an extremely original novel. In the words of the (London) Times Literary Supplement, "it is vivid in its denunciation of destructive forces and in its evocation of what is at stake."

History of a sickness.......2003-05-17
Umberto Eco once said (in his book called The name of the rose):"Only thing that makes a man different than the animal is his ability to laugh" Different author (which doesen't have anything to do with the literature, at least not in the one they call clasic), once said:"There is only one kind of sickness that only humans can suffer from, and it is called - nostalgia."
And this is the book, about it. This is the book, about the feeling you get when you lie at your bed late at night, thinking about all the places and person you have visited and got to know and like, this is the book about irreversibility of the time, and book about stupid mass making stupid mistakes.
Wraped in a form where exile is the main focus, with added retrospective of the war which held place on Balcan in the 90's, told with beautiful language skill (I read the book in the original language, wasn't to difficul considering that I'm native speaker of it :), so I cannot judge the quality of translation,) this book is a masterpiece.
Four stars because fourth part of the book is really bad when compared to rest, with flat prosaic skills, and simple sentences.
Pretentious? Look who's talking........2001-06-30
I have become skillful at avoiding books written on the topic of my former homeland and its vicissitudes. After 10 years of exile and statelessness, a refugee is supposed to have grown a thick skin... Ugresic gets me. I cry and I shiver when I read her. I feel as if going through a dark tunnel while holding somebody's hand. However, I don't know (and I don't want to know)if a person with a permanent citizenship and a stable state of mind would like it.
Sensitive and Moving Picture of Exile.......2000-12-25
This book deserves high marks -- well written, well translated, it gives an unusual and sensitive picture of the life of an exile from the former Yugoslavia. But exiles are not always displaced people: they can be elderly, alone, disoriented, misunderstood -- all prey to an inner exile. Ms. Ugresic's intriguing juxtaposition of stories shows the many different ways in which people construct their own biographies or those of others, but ultimately share many of the same emotions and insoluble problems. There are a lot of wise and touching observations in this "collection" of pieces which ultimately form a moving and poetic whole.
Readers should pass on this one.......2000-11-18
i was prepared to like the book, but instead found it pretentious and irritating. the author seemed more intent upon demonstrating her knowledge of literary technique than in getting the message, whatever it was, across to the readers.

The cover story says it all.......2006-01-14
I wasn't as impressed with the material about Leader trying to get his gamma-head back as most. I found it rather standard fare, even as the grey hulk showed a cunning that the green hulk was never capable of. However, the storyline with the abused wife who shoots her husband in front of the Hulk made me take notice. The story focuses on her, rather than the Hulk (whose function is to emerge as the Hulk after getting thrown in jail as Banner) and when she shoots her husband (after "humiliating" him by saving his life during a beating by the Hulk), Hulk's reaction to her declaration that she didn't mean to kill him (a sarcastic "sure you didn't") made me take notice. This was not the Hulk that had been kicking around the Marvel universe since the 1960s. This was an actual new character.
Peter David eventually turned the Hulk green and then stupid but not before a good 3-4 years of excellent stories. This volume (and the next one) is well worth the money.
The beginning of the greatest Hulk stories ever told.......2005-02-17
Whenever a comic fan thinks of the Hulk, they think of Peter David, and the same can be said the other way around. This TPB collects the first nine issues of David's unheralded run on the title, these issues find the green turned grey skinned and cunning goliath attempting to free itself from the mind and soul of Bruce Banner; no matter what. Featuring a run in with the original X-Men, the Hulk's greatest foe the Leader, and with S.H.I.E.L.D. waiting in the wings, this collection is a reminder of the kind of magic that Peter David worked on his 100 plus run on the title. Todd McFarlane gives the Hulk the most frightening and iconic look the character would have for years, but the best was yet to come from the duo on the title. All in all, it's about time that Marvel started re-printing David's classic run on the series, and hopefully more will be on the way.
Bringing back the good ol' days........2005-02-14
I gave my review of the Incredible Hulk: Ground Zero trade paperback the title of "The beginning of a legend." Little did I realize that Marvel was soon to release a collection of Hulk stories from an even earlier point in the tenure of fan-favorite scribe Peter David: the actual beginning.
Finally freed from the depths of Bruce Banner's soul, the crafty gray Hulk starts taking steps to eliminate his human alter-ego permanently; steps which include turning to one of his oldest enemies for help. Meanwhile, the covert organization SHIELD is seriously re-thinking their policy on the gray goliath, leading to an unexpected turn of events that will alter the lives of the Hulk and his supporting cast forever.
Peter David kicks off his twelve-year run with a bang, taking several long-underused concepts from the Stan Lee/Jack Kirby era to breathe new life into the character. Todd McFarlane, who became the book's regular artist an issue before David's arrival, gives the gray Hulk a truly frightening appearance unlike anything seen before. The child-like green Hulk might be referred to as a "savage", but his cunning counterpart shows he's more than capable of redefining the term.
Featuring the very first appearances of bizarre Hulk villains Half-Life and Mercy, a confrontation with the original X-Men (then under the title of "X-Factor"), an all-new intro by Peter David himself, and a special preview of Incredible Hulk #77 (David's return issue), Hulk Visionaries is an instant Marvel Masterpiece. Bring on the next volume!

This is what made me notice Peter David (and even the Hulk for a time).......2006-01-13
As the second volume in the Peter David/Todd McFarlane run, these issues hit their stride as Peter David gives us the Wolverine/Hulk smackdown and then lets the supporting characters call them idiots for fighting in the first place. This moment is one of many (there's a similar Rhino story) that show both Peter David's affection for the genre and his willingness to break "the rules" when it suits believable story telling. (in other words, comic book logic dictates that big muscle bound mutants fight. Real world logic dictates that most men avoid fights. David lets the RL logic invade.)
The 80s were an interesting time for comic books as Alan Moore and Frank Miller were breaking the established rules and telling stories that fell outside the tedious standards. Peter David's run on the Hulk was very similar to Moore's Swamp Thing revolution, in that he took a long established storyline (in Moore's case it was Swamp Thing's thwarted yearning to be 'human again', in David's case it was Banner's inability to control his raging green id.) and shifted it into something new. His version of the Hulk was funny, witty, mean-spirited and grey. He also allowed the weird experiments to change the rules of the Hulk (he became a werewolf more or less).
Sadly, Peter David was working against the entropy that is the Marvel universe which decrees that all characters should go back to their original 1964 concept, no matter how boring. Peter David would later make the Hulk green again (but well adjusted) and then left the series to lesser writers who returned the the same old garbage.
For that reason alone, you should buy this book to see what happened when one writer was allowed to play with a character that had been trapped in the ether of "continuity."
Continuing Peter David's incredible run.......2005-12-27
The second collected volume of Peter David's unheralded run on the Incredible Hulk, this TPB is more ample proof that no one has ever written Marvel's jade (or gray as he is here) giant better. This volume of Hulk Visionaries finds the Hulk taking on the Leader and an assortment of villains, as well as a knock down, drag out brawl with Wolverine. Also in this TPB is the first appearance of the suit wearing "Mr. Fixit" Hulk who takes a job in a Vegas casino. It's truly something that has to be seen to be believed, but for longtime Hulk readers who fondly remember the heyday of David's run, they know that this was the beginning of something really special and unique in the history of the character. All in all, whether you enjoyed the first TPB or are a fan of Peter David's monumental Hulk run, Hulk Visionaries Vol. 2 is a must own.
GROUND ZERO, complete and unedited.... and more!!.......2005-10-14
Marvel continues its series of Hulk Visionaries: Peter David trade paperbacks with a re-release of the conclusion to the famed writer's "Ground Zero" storyline, this time with all the pages and scenes fully restored!
In addition to the Gray Hulk's legendary battle with Wolverine, and his subsequent skirmishes with the Leader and minions Half-Life, Rock, and Redeemer, this collection also includes the first two issues where the Hulk loses the torn pants and dons a three-piece suit and hat to become "Mr. Fixit", an enforcer and legbreaker for a Las Vegas casino, one of the most unique takes on the character to date.
Peter David continues to astound, taking the earliest concept of the Hulk as an "atomic age Jekyll and Hyde" and developing it into something truly remarkable: a Hulk who finally has the life of his dreams, constantly fearing that Bruce Banner will one day resurface and take it all away from him. Todd McFarlane, Erik Larsen, and Jeff Purves lend their artistic talents to these stories, fittingly marking the ending of one era and the beginning of the next.
Also featuring a battle with the Hulk's longtime sparring partner, the Absorbing Man, Hulk Visionaries: Peter David 2 is another classic milestone in the existence of the gray goliath. Keep them coming, Marvel!

Hulk Smash!!!!.......2007-07-02
Peter David is known as one of the best writers to ever take on the Hulk. In this installment, he proves it yet again. David continues with the Hulk as the Vegas strong man, Mr Fixit. Brutish, mean, and loving it, the Hulk is finally able to live a life on his terms. The Spiderman crossover within the book is one of my personal favorites and The Hulk's battle with The Thing in Central Park may be one of the best clashes between the two in comic history. If you love the Hulk, buy this book.
Continuing Peter David's legendary run.......2007-05-28
Peter David's unheralded run on the Incredible Hulk continues with this third collected volume. In this TPB, David once again focuses on the grey skinned, "Mr. Fixit" Hulk that works as a bouncer at a top Las Vegas casino. Things are going about as good for the Hulk as they usually do, until he goes toe to toe with the Thing in a classic brawl. While what's collected in this volume doesn't really represent the best of what David's run had to offer, it still showcases flashes of the writer's superb talents. His transformation of the Hulk from the green-skinned, uncontrollable alter ego of Bruce Banner into the intelligent, grey-skinned, and very mean Hulk that seeks to rid himself of Banner is only one of many highlights of his prolific run. While this isn't the most excellent of David's run, the best is still yet to come. All in all, for Hulk newbies and veterans, this volume is definitely worth picking up.
Not such a great entry in the GREATEST HULK SAGA EVER!.......2007-03-15
Yes, this edition is only the infantile first steps in a 12 year journey the reader embarks on courtesy of Mr. Peter David & the Incredible Hulk. Fans of the legendary run will already know the status of this item, while people just discovering the Hulk based on the current "World War Hulk" storyline may not be as enlightened. That's what I'm here for!
Peter David is a fairly famous comic book writer. He picked up the reins to the Hulk comic in the mid to late 1980's when no other writer wanted it. From that point on, he spent the next 12 years chronicling the adventures of Bruce Banner, Betty Ross Banner, Rick Jones, & Marlo CHandler to much critical & commercial fanfare. Even turning the Incredible Hulk to a "Bottom-Feeder" Diamond Ranking comic, into a Top 10 heavyweight for a short time w/ the assistance of Dale Keown on pencils.
This volume is #3 in the too slowly expanding Peter David Incredible Hulk catalog. Reprinting approximately issues #346-352?, this volume is slightly lackluster compared to what comes later. Featuring art by Jeff Purves, Alex Saviuk, & Joe Sinnot, this edition focuses on the Hulk's days as a Las Vegas bouncer for a top-notch casino. Appearances by the one & only webbed wonder Spider-Man & the ever loving blue eyed Thing, Benjamin J. Grimm, included within.
In short, Mr. David created by far the most captivating, polarizing, & sheerly mind-rending run on the character EVER. If you want genuine quality in characterization & depth of emotion in your comics than stop looking at this point, b/c You've found it! But again, I'll remind you that this is only the 3rd brief entry in a stellar LONG run for Mr. David, & Honestly, it doesn't truly hit its admirable stride until another 3 volumes in circa issues 360+, but from that point & building from here, you get the best & longest continuous & consecutive run on any comic EVER, second only to Mssrs. Claremont & Byrne on X-Men. So go back & get Incredible Hulk Visionaries v.'s 1 & 2 before continuing on b/c the story never stops building. Until Incredible Hulk: The End that is.
Peter David Continues to Make the Hulk Incredible!.......2006-10-02
With each Hulk Visionaries TPB, Peter David's writing gets richer and richer while the Hulk mythos gets more and more engaging. David continues to add levels of depth to the Mr. Fixit storyline while providing tons of action in the form of appearances by Spider-Man, the Thing, and Dr. Doom.
The thing Peter David does really well with the cunning, mean-spirited gray Hulk aka Mr. Fixit is portray him as a nearly irredeemable figure yet we pull for him at the end. He's rattlesnake mean and often malicious. But, David finds a way to redeem him nontheless. One issue that definitely illustrates this point is the one where the relatively weaker and smaller gray Hulk -- in the guise of Mr. Fixit -- goes up against the now-stronger and bigger Ben Grimm aka the Thing. The rivalry between the Hulk and the Thing is very well known. However, Peter David really turns things upside down when he makes the Thing the Hulk's superior in strength and fighting. It's a much needed humility for the Hulk and the fans appreciate and enjoy it as the Thing takes out his 20+ year frustrations of losing to the Hulk out. However, Peter David finds a way to redeem the Hulk in that fight in a unique way that still holds true to all the previous fights that are legend.
Enjoy what will hopefully only lead to many more Visionary TPBs that collect all of Peter David's legendary Hulk run.

The point where Peter David almost left the book.......2007-07-16
INCREDIBLE HULK VISIONARIES: PETER DAVID, Volume 4 collects THE INCREDIBLE HULK (2nd series) #355-363 and MARVEL COMICS PRESENTS #26 and 45, by writers Peter David & Bob Harras, and artists Jeff Purves, Herb Trimpe, and others. This fourth volume featuring Peter David's complete tenure on the book goes further toward establishing the basis for the "merger" of Hulks which is still a few more installments down the path. It's also where the book nearly jumped the tracks, the writer almost leaving the book in protest over the editorial edict that Bruce Banner's wife Betty suffer a miscarriage (in #360, an issue ultimately written by guest writer and future Marvel Editor-In-Chief to-be, Bob Harras). It's sad that this avenue was never explored, at least not in the main series--after all, just think of the possibilities, for Banner's own father abused him, the psychosis leading to the splintering of personalities forming the psychological basis for the many incarnations of the Hulk. Luckily, Peter David didn't leave, remaining on the book for another eight years.
In this volume too comes the climax of the Hulk's adventures as a legbreaker in Las Vegas, his involvement in the struggles of villainous Glorian, and an act of vengeance by the Grey Gargoyle upon Thor and his likes (by attacking ol' Hulky, natch). A thrilling mix of sub-plots and deep characterization highlights this fourth volume, and anyone who likes the psychodrama of previous efforts will get a kick out of this one, too. Four stars.
Next up in volume 5: "Countdown," Dale Keown, the Madman, Mister Hyde, and the Defenders!

The latest collection for Peter David devotees starts off with a crisis Countdown that takes the gray Hulk from one fight to another against the Abomination, the Fantastic Four, and a Madman who can't decide if he's Bruce Banner's biggest fan or worst enemy!
