4 out of 5 stars A beautiful adaptation of the theme of Fate.......2000-12-08

Ana is a fated woman- plagued by visions and dreams damning her and deriding her. And, as her story progresses, we see that her life must follow the path of despair in order to reach redemption. The story draws on elements of the Holy Bible (the stations of the cross), Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles, and Oedipus Rex to play out a story of modern hardships, ancient beliefs, and destabilization of the status quo. This is a beautifully told story that undulates between first and third person, giving the reader the advantage of the first-person narrative and the objective third.

5 out of 5 stars a remarkable read!.......2000-01-15

with The Memories of Ana Calderon, graciela limon gives us the story of an extraordinarily complex, fiercely determined, passionate and courageous woman! -- who, from birth, struggles both internally and externally with disillusionment and suffering. in a world that attempts to pre-determine fates, ana refuses to submit and/or surrender to what's been scratched out for her on life's slate. as the novel begins, the young girl is about to embark on a geographical journey that will take her more than miles away - that will, unbeknownst to her, lead to the greatest destination one can ever hope to reach: self-acceptance, where one realizes one's own self-worth.

ana ....

who -- as a child, blessed with a very vivid imagination, escapes the routines of a rotting world in which she wants no part, by dreaming, the only way to her young mind available ....

who -- fights and dares to be different from the women around her, the "dumb animals" that bow down silently to their own spiritual deaths in shameful disgrace ....

who -- somehow finds the strength to survive the brutal blows of a "father's hatred and rejection" and the heart-breaking realities and aftermath of a "lover's cowardice, abandonment and betrayal" ....

to know, ... and watch this ana grow, ... is truly to love her!

a determined dreamer and fiery fighter, ana, thanks to the "God-given talent of her brains," learns to pick up the "shattered pieces of herself and (over time) put them back into a better place." --- but, not before life's rocky road leads her home again -- where she will find that what she seeks can only be found within -- and where she discovers that SHE must forgive herself, and love HERSELF for who she is -- that she must be HER own saviour -- and she must accept and CHOOSE to live.

in ana, limon captures, with brilliant and uncanny insight, the inner turmoil and outer struggles of a woman who defies the odds -- and survives! and has written a novel filled with often intense ups and downs and highs and lows -- such as is life!

pick up this book! and follow ana in her travels. it will do you good -- and you'll be glad you went along for the ride!

    Book Description

It was one thing to demand vengeance after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii plunged the United States into World War II, it was quite another to have the wherewithal to carry the fight to the Axis powers' front door. The same two oceans that had previously protected the United States from foreign enemies now provided a like obstacle to projecting American military force in the other direction. Battleships, aircraft carriers and submarines could not do the job alone. It was up to the ordinary soldier to occupy and hold the enemy's real estate, and the Navy needed to commission vast numbers of transports to get them there.

The attack transport USS Charles Carroll was originally laid down to be a combi-liner, carrying passengers and cargo on the Gulf of Mexico trade routes. Most of her wartime crew had never seen the ocean let alone manned a vessel of her size or even handled the small boats that were the ship's main offensive weapon. Yet, together they would evolve into the fighting machine that earned six battle stars in the invasions of North Africa, Sicily, Salerno, Normandy, Southern France and Okinawa.

Lt. Robert W. Goldman, USNR (ret), joined the ship after Operation Torch and participated in her five subsequent invasions. I grew up listening to his stories, which, with the invasion maps, documents, photographs, issues of the Plan of the Day, etc. that he saved, form the backbone of this narrative. I have also met many of his old shipmates and have incorporated their recollections and, whenever possible, entries from the weathered diaries in which some of them set down their first-hand experiences, their fears while in combat and the capers they cut to blow off steam. As much as possible, the book evokes the feel of the times and the perspective of those who were there. The generals and heads of state set policy and strategy but it is the individuals in the field and on the seas who must translate the best laid plans into actions which spell victory or defeat. This is their story.

Covered here are the events involved in the preparation and implementation of the planned annihilation of Europe's Jews by the Nazis. The text also deals with the German invasion of Russia and the mass executions of Jews by mobile killing units that accompanied the army, forced ghettoization of Jews in German-occupied Europe, Jewish resistance efforts, deportations from western, central, and southeastern Europe, and rescue efforts and failures. Book Description

Dr. Riesenberg's book describes the development of citizenship, one of the fundamental ideas and institutions of western civilization, during its long first phase: from the Greeks to the French and Americans of the late eighteenth century. It treats Greek theory and actuality, citizenship under the Roman Republic and Empire, and the revival of citizenship that accompanied the revival of Roman Law and urbanism. Later chapters carry the story through the Renaissance and the early modern period with emphasis on such theorists as Machiavelli, Harrington, and Locke. The book ends with a brief discussion of citizenship in relation to the French and American revolutions.

A History Of Citizenship: Sparta To Washington by historian Peter Riesenberg is a solid, scholarly, and heavily researched study of what it has meant to be a "citizen" as human civilization has evolved through the centuries. An extensive selection of documents from classical literature and ancient treatises supplements the eloquently methodical narration of the essence of citizenship from ancient times to the modern day. A History Of Citizenship is a seminal and enduring work of scholarship enhanced with an extensive bibliography and recommended as a core acquisition title for academic reference collections and Western Civilization supplemental reading lists.

      Book Description

Kage Baker's stories and novels of the mysterious organization that controls time travel, The Company, have made her famous in SF. So has her talent for clever dialogue and pointed social commentary with a light touch. "Ms. Baker is the best thing to happen to modern science fiction since Connie Willis or Dan Simmons. She mixes adventure, history and societal concerns in just the right amount, creating an action-packed but thoughtful read," says The Dallas Morning News. The Anvil of the World is her first fantasy novel, a journey across a landscape filled with bizarre creatures, human and otherwise. It is the tale of Smith, of the large extended family of Smiths, of the Children of the Sun. They are a race given to blood feuds, and Smith was formerly an extremely successful assassin. Now he has wearied of his work and is trying to retire in another country, to live an honest life in obscurity in spite of all those who have sworn to kill him.His problems begin when he agrees to be the master of a caravan from the inland city of Troon to the seaside city of Salesh. The caravan is dogged by murder, magic, and the brooding image of the Master of the Mountain, a powerful demon, looking down from his mountain kingdom upon the greenlands and the travelers passing below. In Salesh, Smith becomes an innkeeper, but on the journey he befriended the young Lord Ermenwyr, a decadent demonic half-breed. Each time Ermenwyr turns up, he brings new trouble with him. The outgrowth of stories Baker has been writing since childhood, as engaging as Tolkien and yet nothing like him, Smith's adventure is certainly the only fantasy on record with a white-uniformed nurse, gourmet cuisine, one hundred and forty-four glass butterflies, and a steamboat. This is a book filled with intrigue, romance, sudden violence, and moments of emotional impact, a cast of charming characters, and echoes of the fantasy tradition that runs from Lord Dunsany and Fritz Leiber to Jack Vance and Roger Zelazny.

      5 out of 5 stars A Journey to Salesh-by-the-Sea.......2007-09-26

The Anvil of the World (2003) is a standalone fantasy novel. The Children of the Sun are a very prolific people, spreading throughout the world. The Smiths are the most widespread people among the Children of the Sun. Their god -- the Smith himself -- expects them to be ingenious, coming up with solutions to all problems.

In this novel, Smith -- not his real name -- is fleeing a blood feud. He is living incognito with his cousin in Troon. When the cousin loses a man to a vendetta, Smith is asked to become the master of his cousin's caravan. How can he refuse?

Lady Seven Butterflies of Seven Butterflies Studio is shipping a gross of glass butterflies encased in a specially developed packing material. Lord Ermenwyr of House Kingfisher is taking passage with his nurse to Salesh-by-the-Sea; of course, he fully expects to die enroute.

The rest of the passengers are listed on the manifest as Lyran and Demara Smith and family, jewelry designers; Paradan Smith, courier; and Ronrishim Flowering Reed, herbalist. All are Children of the Sun, except Ronrishim, who is probably Yendri. Nothing can possibly go wrong on the way.

The caravan crew includes Keymen Crucible, Smith, Bellows, Pinion, and Smith. The runner is young Burnbright and the culinary artist is Mrs. Smith. After these introductions, the keymen crank the gears and springs, the passengers take their seats, Burnbright blows her trumpet, and they start the journey.

In this story, they travel across the yellow land to the first way station, where they set up camp. Caravanmaster Smith meets Lord Ermenwyr's nurse and is quite impressed. Runner Burnbright informs him that Paradan Smith is a gangster; she has seen his tattoos, including Bloodfires' insignia.

The next day, the caravan is attacked by gliders. The first shot hits Smith in the thigh. He and the keymen fire back with their pistol bows, Paradan Smith sends bolt after bolt from an apparently inexhaustible magazine, and Balnshik -- the nurse -- shoots with an immense old hunting weapon.

The gliders veer off and fly away, dropping a firebomb behind them. One of their number, however, has been shot down. He looks like a pin-cushion, struck by a dozen bolts or more. Most of the bolts were shot by Paradan Smith, with three from Nursie and two from the Caravanmaster. Two others, however, are poisoned and unclaimed.

This story includes more assassination attempts, road hogs, and other perils. They finally get to their destination with only minor damage. Even Lord Ermenwyr survives the journey. But Caravanmaster Smith's troubles are not yet over.

Highly recommended for Baker fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of exotic cultures, exciting journeys, and interesting personalities.

3 out of 5 stars Actually more like 3 and a half stars.......2007-09-04

Anvil of the World by Kage Baker was interesting. I didn't find it quite as engaging as her Company series, but it had it's moments. The book almost seems like three stories put together to make a novel. They all center around a character named Smith. The one problem with using Smith for a name is she had several characters all going by Smith. It was a bit confusing in the beginning until I got more familiar with the characters.

      **Caution Possible Spoilers Ahead**

In the first segment Smith is the caravan master for a group heading from the farming town of Troon to the city of Salesh by the sea. He must safely shepherd the group through the wilderness fighting off assassination attempts as he goes.

In the second segment he's now a hotelier with the former cook from the caravan train as his chef in the restaurant potion. The various other workers for the caravan are now porters in his hotel. Smith must solve the mystery of a murder in his hotel before the end of the festival, or he'll have all sorts of trouble with the local authorities.

In the third segment Smith is wisked off to a monastery, by the lordling from the caravan, to rescue the lordling's sister.

Each story was interesting in it's own right, but as a whole the plot seemed disjointed. There didn't seem to be much of a connection from the beginning of the book to the end other than the use of the same characters. I suppose many find this sort of day in the life prose interesting. I prefer stories that are driven more by a single plot with various side plots adding depth to the characters. Ms. Baker's world building is sound, and each segment was enjoyable. I did find the end segment to be a bit preachy, but not so much as to detract from the book.

2 out of 5 stars This was a poor fantasy!.......2007-07-20

      Overall:

A good friend of mine recommended this novel, saying that it was one of the funniest fantasy she had ever read. I returned it wonder if she smoked some form of crack. :) Ok, so that was kind of harsh...and I don't think she does drugs of any sort. Stil, this novel was not what I expected. Saying that, it is nowhere near as good as The Company. The entirety of the book is OK-paced, though it suffers from incoherent and illogical transitions between people, places, and events.

      Character Impressions:

To be very honest, the quality of Anvil of the World was severely lacking. Though the author used whit and humor AT TIMES, the overall character design was horrible. Seriously, I can only think of one other book with such poor dialogue, sporadic personalities, and overall mish-mosh of simplistic characters. The only major compliment I can offer is that this story broke from the normal good versus evil fantasy formula. Actually, now that I think back...the first 30 or so pages was actually pretty decent.

For those thinking of reading this tale, Anvil is like a bad slapstick comedy. Though some of the characters inevitably make you laugh...they get REALLY annoying.

Hrmm...this isn't about me bashing an author, so I want to say here, that though I consider Anvil to be very sophmoric...there are still funny proponents to this style. The strongest aspects of this humor, I thought, were the quasi-evil characters...though I guess all the characters are never really given definition. Saying that, the I consider the ****SPOILER ALERT**** battle of words to be one of the best character confrontations in the whole book. It almost made me actually laugh. :)

      Stylistic Impressions:
I can be honest when I say that though the style was not to my liking, the grammar used in this book was solid. (A few errors here and there, but nothing like some of the POD / Self-pub I read). Saying that, and as mentioned before the dialogue in this novel is kind of weak and my greatest complaint. I know, I know. "It can be so difficult to write believable dialogue for characters in a comedy." Well that is true...but some of the things said and then done are just wholly lacking any sort of logical fluence.

Further, I did not enjoy the methods Ms. Baker used to switch between locations and times within the story. To me anyway, it made the story feel herky- jerky.

      Story Impressions:

This novel details the story of an assassin trying to change his life around? And, in the mix he meets up with an insane demon or four, some crazy humanoid herbviores against violence, a bunch of people named Smith, and a whole slew of other things. The unconventional choice of characters allowed the author some interesting leeway when trying to tell the story. Did it add some humor? Absolutely! Was it compelling fantasy comedy? Hardly.

      Final Considerations:

I hate to be so negative about any work. And, I can recognize that maybe this book was just not for me. I can even recognize that maybe I just don't like the author's style. That said, this book was sorely lacking in everything that I think makes a good book.

Overall, in a rating for 1-5, I would give this book a 1.5, and the only reasons it's not lower is because it did make me laugh 4-5 times. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this book to anyone else...and will definately not be reading anything else in Ms. Baker's series.

2 out of 5 stars Not the quality of the Company series.......2007-02-11

The Anvil of the World is not a Company book. It is a fantasy book. It was not a very compelling book. It lacked the depth and layers that the Company books have. It was pretty pointless.

      4 out of 5 stars A Witty Yarn.......2006-07-25

Smith -- a skilled assassin -- has grown weary of his trade. So, he winds up taking a job leading a caravan (his cousin owns the caravan company) full of valuable cargo and some rather peculiar passengers from the inland city of Troon, to the seaside city of Salesh. The trip to the seaside city is fraught with mishap, and, of course, the mishaps do not cease upon arrival, but instead launch Smith head-on into a whole bunch of danger he was really hoping to avoid when he decided to stop killing people for a living.

The Anvil of the World is my first foray into a world created by Ms. Baker. I have to admit, I thoroughly enjoyed the wit and humor woven into the story. The only real complaint I have is that a couple of the characters that are discussed quite a bit throughout the book, only wind up appearing at the very end...kind of cameo-ish. A little more build-up to their entrance would have been nice. That being said, it doesn't really distract from what is, at its heart, a fairly easy-to-read page-turner. This book is recommend to Baker novices (like I was upon picking this book up) as well as old pros, alike.

          Book Description

This history of the Cuban Missile Crisis is based on newly released materials from the John F. Kennedy Library, United States Department of State and the former Soviet Union. This crisis was caused by the discovery that nuclear ballistic missiles had been secretly installed by the Soviet Union in Cuba in support of the government of Fidel Castro. The discovery of these missiles by U-2 spy planes produced a nuclear confrontation between two super powers. As this study demonstrated, both the Soviet and the United States governments misunderstood, misperceived and misjudged the actions and motives of the other side. Both governments were at fault in bringing on this confrontation. In the end, both governments were frightened enough to draw back from igniting a nuclear holocaust.

            Book Description

Dr. Király's book describes 132 years of Hungary's history and explains the causes and effects of ten changes of regimes. During the first five decades, Habsburg bureaucrats made decisions on Hungary's foreign policy and most of its economy. After 1939, Nazis dictated policies, occupied the country, and imposed a Nazi regime. From 1944, the Soviet Union occupied and ruled Hungary for more than half a century. Only in 1990 did Hungary enjoy full sovereignty with complete freedom for its citizens. Democracy prevails in Hungary today. From his vantage point, first in the upper echelons of the military, then later in government, Dr. Király was an eyewitness and sometime participant in events there for nearly half the period.

              Book Description

The Enlightenment, followed by the American, French, and Industrial revolutions, provoked far-reaching political, economic, social and religious changes in the 19th century, which dominated events in the 20th, influencing the course of the 21st century. The papacy found its authority questioned. The present volume of text and documents focuses on the papal response to the modern world. Included in its pages is the Vatican's response to liberalism, socialism and communism as well as historical events from the French Revolution to the Cold War. It also examines papal neutrality during the World Wars, its attitudes towards racism, and its response to the Holocaust.

Simon Bolivar, liberator of five nations from Spanish tutelage, is one of the towering public figures that our hemisphere has produced. As a soldier he gave warfare in America a new dimension by establishing that makeshift forces, if imaginatively led and with grass roots support, could triumph over better drilled, better equipped external armies. Some internationalists credit Bolivar with planting the seeds of the League of Nations and the United Nations.
