Book Description

The Bible is a unique narrative of origins and cosmic powers, of the ageless battle between good and evil, of human potential and human treachery—the very stuff of the graphic novel. This award-winning book presents the entire span of the Bible in a dramatic visual style to enthrall a new generation of readers.

The artwork and narratives are excellent. They truly capture the emotions and characters within the stories and make them engrossing. I was very impressed with this book both for its graphic art and for its comprehensive retelling of Old and New Testament stories.

4 out of 5 stars Graphic Bible missing a story.......2003-04-21

Only thing I found wrong with this Bible is they took out the story of Sodom & Gomorra. I guess they didn't want to offend anybody. Art work is good,it has an adult comic book style to it.

Book Description

When the Cardinal next in line to succeed the ailing Pope turns up dead, Scotland Yard's finest detective, Charlie Northern, finds himself on a plane to Rome with little more than a full pack of cigarettes. With the help of a priest, a coroner and one beautiful lawyer, Northern must uncover the facts in a place legendary for keeping its secrets. There are forces at work in The Holy See that would see the truth remain hidden - forces ancient and dark, with a power not seen in this world for millennia, and an agenda that will leave Northern's world more shattered than he could have ever foreseen.

4 out of 5 stars Dark storyline, Excellent artwork, snappy dialogue: Very Good Series!.......2007-03-05

What caught my eye when I bought Revelations (the bound edition of all six installments) was the cover art. I thought it was darn good. Then the premise of the story. I love tales that are set in a religious milieu.

I will say that the cover art's promise of interesting visuals is fully delivered between the pages. Ramos rocks! And the dialogue has some amusing, sarcastic, snappy moments that made me want to read on. The story itself is dark, it's painful, and it's not necessarily all that unique. You've seen some version of this before.

You have the main character, a detective from England who's lost his faith, a priest from the Vatican who's old pals with him and comes to ask his investigation into a vexing murder of a high church official (that the detective used to know), and a crime that is clearly part of some conspiracy. Our cynical, chain-smoking detective keeps coming against odd bits of facts, and as he unravels the case, he comes face to face with the fact that learning the truth can really flip your world tuchis over tea kettle.

There are murders, there are flagellants, there is sex, there is subterfuge, there's a bunch of latin chanting, there is misdirection, there's a sexy femal attorney, there is friendship, there is suicide, and there is humor to offset some of the dark stuff.

I'd recommend it if this sounds like the sort of story you'd enjoy, and I'd recommend it for the artwork alone, really. But it's not a happy story and, once you come to the end, it's not entirely satisfying. But I don't think it was meant to satisfy, not at all. I think this comics series was intended to bring a thorn into your side, discomfort you, and that's sometimes good.

4 out of 5 stars A quick fun read for Christian conspiracy buffs........2006-09-26

Paul Jenkins' Revelations is an dark and interesting short read. Granted, it is a graphic novel (read: large comic book), but I finished the thing cover to cover in about 90 minutes. The fact that I finished it in a single sitting is a testment to the interesting nature of the storyline.

The storyline does throw a few curves, but overall I would consider the plot reather simple. The story takes a bit to get going, and then wraps up at a furious pace in the last 5-10 pages. Though the ending is very dark, it may be slightly lost on those unfamiliar to Christian mythology and/or the Bible's Revelations (go figure). Having that supplemental knowledge definately adds to the story. At the end, I was left wanting more substance in the conclusion.

I would reccomend this to nearly everyone with the caveat that is probably a PG-13 book for language and graphics.

5 out of 5 stars A SINISTER CATHOLIC COVER UP.......2006-08-18

Revelations is a 168 page trade paperback from Dark Horse comics that collects the complete, six issue mini-series. Revelations is decidedly Da Vinci Code inspsired with its conspiracies and Catholic hierarchy cover-ups although it ends up being decidedly darker in tone than Dan Brown's blockbuster.

As the story opens a Vatican Cardinal falls, or is thrown from a window and impaled on the gates below. Obviously dead, that doesn't stop a Latin-chanting assailant from still attempting to stab the Cardinal with an odd looking dagger. Cut to London and the apartment of Detective Charlie Northern who receives a late visitor one evening, an old friend Marcel LeClair, himself now a Cardinal at the Vatican. LeClair brings Northen to Vatican City to investigate the death of Cardinal Richleau who many considered the next in line to become Pope.

His investigation is hindered by the powerful Cardinal Toscianni who is covering up the events of Richleau's death and the mysterious, dagger-wielding assailant. The Italian police are little help and come off as rank amateur bumblers. The facts don't add up as various guards report hearing different things. Northern finds an ally in Lucille Pelliccia who heads up the accounting firm that handles the Vatican's finances. A mysterious coin leads Northen to a secret society called the Palladian Fathers and rumors of black masses and devil worshipping.

Soon, a coroner friend of Northern's who performed an autopsy on the Cardinal's body is found brutally murdered and someone tries to run down Charlie in the streets. Northern is getting close to something but the question is what? And who is the mysterious man feeding Northern tips about the investigation?

Revelations is a darkly painted mystery horror and surprisingly sinister. I was expecting Northern to be a typical downtrodden police detective but writer Paul Jenkins truly breathes life into the character. Northern is part John Constantine and part Sherlock Holmes, or perhaps Columbo might be the better comparison. Humberto Ramos' art isn't t he typed you'd expect to find in a book of this tone as it is quirky, and slightly cartoony, but ends up working quite well. The climax is starkly horrifying as Jenkins throws readers a big curveball.

My only nitpick about the book would be the somewhat rambling, paranoid introduction by Bob Harris written from a trench somewhere deep on the left. That aside, Revelations is one outstanding book.

Cathy expresses many single girls'un-verbalized feelings. She represents women who wish they were married but have been hoodwinked by society's trend that marriage sells a woman short of her potential. If you are the type of person who is gung-ho about her career and personal achievement, you probably will not like this book. If you admit that women are different than men and that everyone has his/her frivolous side, then you may enjoy watching Cathy trying to figure out how best to survive.

Rupert Thomson has a solid reputation as a cult writer: his earlier books have garnered increasing acclaim without ever really propelling him into the authorial big time. Still, his 1998 novel, Soft!, marked a definite upswing in terms of recognition. And it would be a shame if The Book of Revelation, his sixth and latest, didn't continue this trend, given its level of psychological and aesthetic daring.

The narrator of Thomson's book is a dancer living in Amsterdam. One day he goes out to buy some cigarettes for his girlfriend--also a dancer--and is kidnapped and held for a period of time before being released. It would be unfair to give away too much more. But suffice it to say that each development adds an additional coordinate to what we might call the novel's emotional geography. Indeed, the Dutch metropolis seems to be a full participant in this intricate fiction:

There was a sense in which the city had been trying to tell me something all along. You'll never solve this case. You might as well forget it. But I had not been listening, of course. Look at the map. It's all there, in a way. The whole story.
At a time when so many writers are obsessed with trauma--particularly child abuse and its psychological fallout--Thomson chooses to explore the concept through an event that is both more and less sensational. The narrator's ordeal evokes the sort of highly ritualized bastinado that we encounter in, say, Story of O. Yet the author distances us from these events by switching from the first to the third person, a simple device that complicates and deepens the effect of the book as a whole.

Thomson's strange, disturbing tale asks profound questions about the burden of the past, especially of past events that set one apart from others. In this sense, The Book of Revelation chips away at the very notion of objectivity. How do we relate to others when we have experienced events that defy explanation or resolution? Perhaps such truths can be delivered only by (as it were) revelation. --Burhan Tufail

Book Description

In an edgy psychological thriller that is as mesmerizing as it is profound, Rupert Thomson fearlessly delves into the darkest realm of the human spirit to reveal the sinister connection between sexuality and power.

Stepping out of his Amsterdam studio one April afternoon to buy cigarettes for his girlfriend, a dashing 29-year old Englishman reflects on their wonderful seven-year relationship, and his stellar career as an internationally acclaimed dancer and choreographer. But the nameless protagonist's destiny takes an unthinkably horrifying turn when a trio of mysterious cloaked and hooded women kidnap him, chain him to the floor of a stark white room to keep as their sexual prisoner, and subjected him to eighteen days of humiliation, mutilation, and rape. Then, after a bizarrely public performance, he is released, only to be held captive in the purgatory of his own guilt and torment: The realization that no one will believe his strange story. Coolly revelatory, meticulously crafted, The Book of Revelation is Rupert Thomson at his imaginative best.

Download Description

On a bright spring day in Amsterdam, stepping out to buy a pack of cigarettes, a young man is accosted by three mysteriously cloaked women who hold him as their sexual prisoner. Those 18 days, and the subsequent years of his life, make this a wildly compelling and deeply disturbing novel.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars An excellent insight into the mindset of a victim.......2007-02-06

A male dancer recounts firstly his experience of being recognised by some of his fans while running an errand to purchase cigarettes for his girlfriend. After feeling a prick in his hand he wakes up chained to the floor of a room. Three obsessed female fans tell him he's theirs now. They rape, sexually humiliate and use him for their pleasure. He has no idea if he will ever be set free of if they will eventually kill him. They tell him what he is undergoing would be many a man's fantasy but for him it is nothing but a terrifying nightmare.

The second half of his story (he tells us he escaped after 18 days on page 1 so I'm not giving away anything here) recounts his tale of what it is like to be a male victim of sexual assault, how he believes no one will believe his story and how he becomes obsessed with tracking down his torturers.

This is a great insight into what life would be like for the victim of an horrendous sexual assault, torture and gang rape. The added uniqueness of this book is that it deals with a male victim instead of a female which is more frequently written about. The book as well as well as being a well written account of his ordeal tackles how as a victim he believes society would firstly believe and then treat a male victim of rape by females.

3 out of 5 stars Weird!.......2007-01-01

This book was a disappointment, a decidedly weird book about a young English choreographer living in Amsterdam, who is drugged and kidnapped by three masked women, who then hold him prisoner for 18 days, before inexplicably setting him free. During his captivity he's subjected to sexual and psychological abuse, although it seemed to me that none of it was anything close to the kind of suffering women are routinely subjected to, both in real life and in fiction, at the hands of men. The nameless protagonist spends the rest of the novel searching for his abductors. His method--to have sex with as many women as he can in order to examine their bodies and see if they resemble those of his captors--is an exercise in futility, although it does offer effective testimony to the emotionally disabling effects of sexual abuse.

In the end the book is not merely unsatisfying, but downright frustrating. Nothing is ever explained. The victim never solves the mystery of his kidnapping, and never even finds the slightest clue, although at the conclusion of the book he has at least begun to face up to the psychological ramifications of his experience and his refusal to disclose it to anyone. Perhaps this lack of explanation is the whole point--the idea that some of life's most wounding experiences can never be communicated to others, or adequately explained.

4 out of 5 stars Deserves more recognition, a wider readership........2006-03-05

The Book of Revelation is the story of the abduction, confinement, and subsequent gang-raping a la physical mutilation of a famous ballet dancer in Amsterdam, Holland.
This ballet-dancer is walking to the store one afternoon and is suddenly approached by three hooded [fully cloaked] characters in an alleyway. A needle comes out of nowhere, instantly the dancer is anaesthetized, and hauled off to a [there is no other word for it]... a sex warehouse of sorts.
Shackled to the floor from every limb, the dancer awakens to find the door in the corner of the room opening, and the abductors entering the room to begin their season of sexual torment and "fun." [So far, sounds sort of like some run-of-the-mill Bret Easton Ellis "sicko" novel for sicko-men, right?]
Hah! Guess again!
The dancer in the story is a man.
His captors are three women.
And so it is that for the next eighteen days and nights these dames definitely have their way with him. Their [ahem...] fertile imagination seems to know no bounds!
There is nearly infinitely more to the story than this aspect of it. The confinement section occupies less than the first half of the book. The real bulk of the story involves the way that this event affects the dancer, upon his release. Nothing emerges unscathed. His former relationships, his career itself, his own sexual behavior, all has undergone change.
His life becomes a quest to bring a sense of closure to what happened. And this can only be done, it seems to him, if he finds his captors again. Confronts them.
His search begins...

What an amazingly well-written story. What a bizarre theme. And yet not so bizarre, really [perhaps].
All in all, it is a real sleeper. And Rupert Thomson proves here that he is an author worthy of the recognition of an Ian McEwan or a J.M. Coetzee.

3 out of 5 stars strange and titillating, but not much else.......2005-08-16

The main character, while running an errand for his dancer girlfriend, is kidnapped by three women, who remain masked throughout. Confined to a room at an unknown location, he is essentially made into their sexual slave. Horrific ordeal or fantasy? I suppose it depends on one's point of view. Although the description of the sexual acts performed on the man are certainly the most charged part of "The Book of Revelations," I think the main point concerns the man's obsession with discovering the identities of his kidnappers, and the location of the room, after he is let go. In this regard, it sort of reminded me of John Fowles' "The Magus," which I believe to be one of the most overrated books ever written. In both novels, the main characters' lives become defined by their respective pursuits of their former tormentors, even at the price of sacrificing their own lives and identities.

"The Book of Revelations," contains very little in the way of revelation, but it's an interesting read due to the bizarre subject matter (and alot shorter than "The Magus"!).

5 out of 5 stars a tour de force.......2004-01-15

Rupert Thomson (1955) has written a fascinating and compelling sixth novel, and once you start reading 'The Book of Revelation', it's difficult to put the book down. A nameless 30-year old english dancer/choreographer lives and works in Amsterdam. He has a succesful career and for some years he's been living happily with his nice girlfriend Brigitte, also a dancer. In his life there are no real troubles, until... everything changes forever. He's abducted in Amsterdam by three cloaked and hooded women, who hold him captive and chained naked to the floor of an anonymous white empty room for eighteen days. For no apparent reason. During his captivity the only option there for him is total submission. The young women, presumably of his own age, appear often naked -though always hooded- to him. They have their way and play all kinds of games with him, mostly for their sexual pleasure. When the women's demands become more fierce, total dehumanisation and humiliation follows. The man is defenseless against this depraved performance of power, domination and desire. The ordeal he's subjected to includes rape and even brutal mutilation. For the reader this is a shocking nightmare as well.

The captivity-part of the book reminded me of Pascal Bruckner's bizarre and weird, but brilliant novel 'les voleurs de beauté' (1997), and of two films where a similar sort of events takes place: Pasolini's 'Salo: the 120 days of Sodom' (1975) and Michael Haneke's 'Funny Games' (1998). What happens there is that you're forced to witness extreme atrocities, while you know there will be no escape from these brutal violations of human dignity. And of course, as a 'witness', it makes you sick, you feel horrible. It's the same with Thomson's 'Book of revelation', with one big difference, ... a relief. The man regains his freedom. After eighteen days the women all of a sudden decide to release him.

The book is really about what follows then. Of course, after his release he's not really free. He will carry the horrible events he endured in captivity for the rest of his life, probably without ever knowing the identity of his torturers. In a brilliant way Thomson manages to describe the psychological process that accompanies the quest that now lies ahead of this deeply wounded man. His life-after looks like an endless re-evaluation. How to live with yourself, with these scars, how to deal with sexuality, with the people around you, and how to put your life in some sort of right track again... Facing all these problems the man begins a search for the women who made a ruin of his life. A search that will also bring his innermost self to the fore, in a way he never could have imagined.

The outline and structure of the novel is well balanced, and the shifting of perspective, using the first person ('I'-form) and third person ('he'-form) alternately in different sections of the novel, works fine and efficient. I read all Thomson's novels and one of his best writing skills throughout his work is the use of analogies. In 'The Book of Revelation' display of that skill may not be as abundant as in 'The five gates of hell' and 'The insult' -his most mesmerizing and intoxicating novels- but the outline and the psychological development of the main character is as good as ever. And, what's more, in 'The Book of Revelation' Thomson reveals a deep wisdom to everyone of us about essentials of life, concerning relationships, sexuality, human dignity and freedom. A remarkable achievement, and taking into account the difficult subject Thomson is dealing with here, I consider 'The Book of Revelation' a succesful 'tour de force'. In an oeuvre that's far from complete I hope. [9-1-2001]

4 out of 5 stars Magnificent Volume in Swords and Sorcery Series.......2007-05-01

In this second volume in the superb fantasy series featuring sword-dancers Sandtiger and Delilah, the setting shifts from Tiger's desert stomping grounds to Del's wintery northern mountains. After finding her brother Jamail a willing slave to a Vashni tribal leader, Del must return to her homeland to Staal-Ysta, the Place of Swords. It is here that Del slew her own sword master in order to endow her magical sword with the power she need to complete her mission of vengeance. Accompanied by Tiger, Del must face the governing council to explain her actions and to face the consequences of her obsession with revenge and what it has cost her. As the pair travel farther and farther from Tiger's homeland, he is compelled to face the magic he would deny. For Tiger has a special affinity for magic that becomes critical to their survival when a mysterious force sends a pack of magical hounds to steal Del's jivatma, her powerful named blade. Even as he refuses to admit the existence of magic, Tiger must find a way to fight his unseen foe. But it is in Staal-Ysta that Tiger will face his most dangerous opponent in a betrayal that will threaten the lives of Tiger and Del. Del's obsession with getting back what she gave up persuades her to trade Tiger's freedom for a year with the daughter she has never known. Roberson has crafted a fast-paced magnificent novel that incorporates exciting action with deft character development. The reader and Tiger begin to understand the depths of Del's obsession and the price she has paid to transform herself into an avenging warrior. The book resonates with power and beauty.

4 out of 5 stars They love each other, they bicker, they travel, they . . ........2006-12-31

. . . no, I'll leave that for the end.

This is the sequel to "Sword-Dancer," in which we met Delilah ("Del") and the Sandtiger ("Tiger"), who are both experts with sword-fighting, ceremonial, ritual, and otherwise. Tiger helps Del find her kidnapped younger brother, but the end is not as one would expect.

Now, in "Sword-Singer," Del and Tiger are traveling out of the deserts of the South into the cold, mountainous North, which is Del's homeland. Del has to decide whether she is going to go to Staal-Ysta, where she was trained with the sword, to try to clear her name regarding the death of her teacher, or to go after the rogues who killed most of her family and sold her brother into slavery.

As Del and Tiger travel Northward, they often argue about gender roles, they fall in love, they argue about what Del should do, they make love, they fight off bandits, they avoid talking about their future, they teach each other their differing techniques at sword-play, and they encounter black magic in several forms.

Once they reach Staal-Ysta, things get very, very complicated, and Del and Tiger . . . no, not yet. I'll leave that for the end.

As we get to know these two complex characters, each with a dark history, we also get to see them face numerous challenges. However, the story is a bit slow through the first fifty pages or so. It is only once they start facing magic and non-magic opponents that things get very interesting. Ms. Roberson writes quite well, but I think readers might be lost if they do not read "Sword-Dancer" before reading this book, as most of the character development takes place in the first book. The biggest character changes that occur in "Sword-Singer" is that Tiger finds out he HATES the cold, and he becomes quite curmudgeonly, somewhat reminiscent of Stephen R. Donaldson's character, Thomas Covenant. There is a lot of action and drama in "Sword-Singer," once it gets warmed up. I definitely plan to continue reading the series, with "Sword-Maker" next on the list.

Oh, and what happens at the end? I won't spoil the result, but Tiger and Del end up fighting each other, with swords, possibly to the death, for complicated reasons.

4 out of 5 stars Tiger out of his element, Del back in hers.......2004-08-30

In this second volume of the series (you definitely need to have read the first in order to understand what's going on), Tiger, the Southron sword-dancer, follows his battle-comrade and bedmate, the striking female dancer Del, back to her Northern homeland to stand as her advocate when she faces the council of teachers in an attempt to justify having killed her own in order to take his spirit into her jivatma (blooded blade). She has one year to do this or be foresworn and declared outlaw, whom any Norherner may kill with impunity. Of course, the quest isn't easy. Tiger is still recovering from the aftereffects of his brief enslavement in the tanzeer Aladar's mine, and the weather seems determined to delay them even though Del knows the country well. Tiger inadvertantly releases some loki (apparently a kind of malevolent earth-spirit) from the magical circle that imprisons them, and a Borderer widow and her two children in need of protection and escort hold the pair up even further. Then they realize that they're being hunted by what Tiger christens the "hounds of hoolies"--doglike but clearly sorcerous beasts who seem to have a sinister interest in Del's sword Boreal.

What makes this book hold your attention is twofold: the developing relationship between Tiger and Del, who, having become lovers as well as comrades, are gradually settling into the practicalities of pairhood, trying to blend their differing views of what women can (or should) do and how Del can balance personhood with her quest to avenge her murdered family; and the picture we get of the North and its culture. As you read, you begin to understand more and more of the influences that shaped Del into the woman she is, just as the revelations of "Sword-Dancer," the first book, gives you an understanding of Tiger. Any fantasist needs to learn how to explain her world while still keeping the pace of her story intact, and Roberson succeeds very well in this. I wish that she had provided a map of the lands through which Del and Tiger travel, but that may just be me: I always like to be able to locate characters in space as well as time. In the end Tiger displays both his deep regard and loyalty for Del and the pragmatism of his training as a sword-dancer in a climactic conflict that made me immediately pull out the next book in the series to find out whether he'd really done what it looked like he had. A solid entry into a fantasy series that has become classic.

3 out of 5 stars Great book, contrived ending :(.......2002-06-25

I loved this book, it's an excellent story, without an ending. But the writer really does this all the way through the books. An excellent story line, with very few details to help you fully appreciate the story and the world in which it is set. When it comes to important, character changing events within the character's lives, she leaves out all details. It just makes it very difficult to get to know the characters, beyond the male/female conflict that unerringly crops up in every one of their conversations.

The story itself though is worth the three stars, an excellent storyline. I'll read the next book, I've already purchased it. But I want to see how the story ends. I just wish Tolkien or Jordan could tell it :P

5 out of 5 stars Good continuation of a great series..........2001-06-01

If you liked Sword-Dancer, you'll love this one (naturally). A perfect continuation of the story. Order Sword-Maker now, too...Sword-Singer's ending will have you wanting the next one nearby...

"Although Darkover was a world inhabited by humans as well as semi-humans, it was primarily forbidden ground to the Terran traders. Most of the planet's wild terrain was unexplored... and many of its peoples seclusive and secretive. But for Andrew Carr there was an attraction he could not evade. Darkover drew him. Darkover haunted him - and when his mapping plane crashed in unknown heights, Darkover prepared to destroy him. Until the planet's magic asserted itself - and his destiny began to unfold along lines predicted only by phantoms and wonder workers of the kind Terran science could never acknowledge. THE SPELL SWORD is a Darkover novel to stand with the great ones of the series."
