Customer Reviews:
Good book but I believe there are better.......2006-11-27
The good: This book is easy to read and understand, assumes very little of the reader other than a general understanding of current science. Explainations are clear and build logically throughout the book. Very little math - any high school math would be enough to understand what little there is in this book. Information is up to date and the book has many good pictures and diagrams to aid in understanding.
The not as good: I would have liked more in depth detail. I know this is somewhat subjective the book still has nearly 500 pages, however the text often only covers 60% of a page. In comparison to the at least two compeating books "Astronomy Today" and "The Universe" have over 700 pages each and more like 90% of a text page coverage just to grossly compare them. Each of these books also are easy to read, have good pictures and diagrams too.
So all in all this book is good and covers the subject well, but if you wish more detail other books may be better choices.
Everything you want to know, plus a great CDRom!.......2003-04-07
This book is really good, especially for those interested in the universe and its formation. It also comes with a CDRom with video clips and a study guide for students. A useful, and interesting book!

The trailing off gets old.......2006-10-25
I haven't gotten very far into this book...it's like...it's really hard to get into...I'm not sure why...I want to like it...I've heard good things...about the...writer...
This is how ellipses are used in this book. To distraction. Throughout the whole thing. I tried to look past it or get over it, but I couldn't.
I tried reading it straight through and couldn't, so then I flipped through and read whatever fragments of pages caught my eye. I could tell by doing this that Sarraute has interesting ideas in this book, and that her way of telling a story from a psychological standpoint is admirable, but it was like trying to talk to someone who trails off mid-sentence, every sentence. Even if they were the most fascinating person alive, I wouldn't be able to talk to them because it would bug me.
Maybe everyone who likes this book is a bigger person than I. I hope for poor dead Sarraute's sake that most readers are. That's why it's 3 stars instead of 2 or 1. I can tell if I were a more patient person and could stand the over-over-over use of ellipses for 250 pages straight, this book would be interesting.
An intriguing little read.......2006-05-23
Nathalie Sarraute isn't quite as eccentric and daring as I'd been led to believe before I got around to reading her. In fact her subject matter is decidedly traditional - it's just her approach that's so unusual. She discusses ordinary scenarios of human life - here, the life of a young man, his wife and his aunt - in terms of pure psychology, not of narrative.
The effect is that dialogue blends with stream-of-consciousness in a compelling flow. There's little traditional characterization; rather, Sarraute illustrates her characters solely through what they say and think. I don't know whether she intended literary revolution in works such as this, but it's inarguable that she does something fascinating and new here. Highly recommended.
experiment in the practice of writing vs. enjoyable read.......2002-05-15
sarraute's contribution it the nouveau roman and the radicalisaton of the traditional novel is beyond question, what is doubtful is whether such formal experimantation is conducive to enjoyment of the book as entertainment. interesting but dry

Book Description
The astrolabe was the most sophisticated astronomical instrument of the pre-telescopic age, and one of the most beautiful instruments of any age. Combining a simple observational tool with an elegant analogue computer, it was used for everything from time-telling to surveying, from casting a horoscope to converting among equatorial, ecliptic, and horizon coordinate systems. It was also one of the finest products of mathematically informed craftsmen. In medieval and Renaissance Europe it was emblematic of the astronomer's profession, and often of a nobleman's erudition. In the Islamic world it aided travelers with their daily prayers. Today astrolabes are among the most highly prized instruments of early science.
The Adler Planetarium & Astronomy Museum in Chicago is home to one of the world's three or four great collections of astrolabes. In this volume Roderick and Marjorie Webster, Adler Curators Emeriti, present the Western astrolabes from the Adler's collection. The earliest of these instruments dates from the thirteenth century; others are from the workshops of the greatest craftsmen of the Renaissance. All are described here and illustrated lavishly with photographs showing the front, the back, and additional details such as the maker's signature. Introductory essays by the Websters and Sara Schechner Genuth explain the use of the astrolabe and its role in cultural and social history, while the appendices and bibliography provide information essential to the specialist.
Inaugurating the multi-volume catalogue of the Adler's collection, this book lovingly documents the Western astrolabes, astrolabe-quadrants, and mariner's astrolabes at the Adler.

Book Description
With glowing constellations on every page, young stargazers will love this entertaining and easy-to-read introduction to astronomy.

beginning star gazing.......2000-09-19
my son is 6 years old and has recently gotten interested in the world of science. stargazing and finding constellations has been a big interest of his. this book is easy for this age group to follow and changes subjects frequently enough that they don't get bored. they learn about the night sky and some of the words are also easy enough that he reads some of it himself. the only drawback of this book is the "man in the moon" picture seemed to scare my son a little but he still pronounces it his favorite book..."just not the scarey part"!

Customer Reviews:
A review for volume 8 .......2005-05-10
{Note: I put this review on the page for Volume 8 of Girl Got Game, but for some reason Amazon has put this review under other volumes.}
Here's the summary given by Tokyopop (the summary Amazon has written is for a different volume):
"The perfect combination for love: magical mushrooms and steamy hot springs! Imai decides that the basketball team should go on a mushroom gathering trip to the hot springs. During the trip Kensuke tells an annoyed Chiharu that he's asked Kyo to go steady with him. To spice things up, Kyo and Chiharu mistakenly eat some mushrooms, which make them behave in rather uncharacteristic ways - like confessing their love for each other! Is it love brewing or are the mushrooms doing the talking?"
This volume was as hilarious as the others. Between the hijinx and misunderstandings this book had me cracking up all the way through. And what's great about this volume is that we finally get to see a progression in Chiharu and Kyo's relationship.
Just as the summary said, these two end up in a pretty close encounter when they eat some bad mushrooms on a school trip. But just when you think those two might finally go somewhere, Kyo and Kenseke end up in a pretty "interesting" position . . . one you just have to see. But not to worry, this just helps to set the stage for some honesty in feelings between Kyo and Chiharu.
I would highly recommend getting this volume . . . as a matter of fact I would highly recommend getting the entire series. It is just sooo funny. It will have you rolling on the floor in fits of laughter.
I love this series........2004-12-19
Shizaru Seino has created an awesome series. She acts like she knows so much about basket ball, yet in an interview with Seino from volume 2, she doesn't even know how to play basketball. If I had a conversation with her, I'd tell her she should play basketball, considering I've played basketball for years.
In the last book, a new character, Kensuke Yura, appears. He's very smart and has played basketball before, yet he hasn't shown up for practice for such a long time. But Kyo convinces him to come back. At Kyo and Yura's first practice together, Kyo finds out that Yura doesn't really have a good relationship with the other players.
Then an accidental encounter leads up to a big misunderstanding involving...Chiharu, the guy who is ticked off everyday about something different. But something happens that totally leaves Kyo in the dust.
What is it? Read the book and find out ^_^.
A must Read!!!!.......2004-12-09
This is one story you wouldnt want to miss!!! A story of a girl that got enrolled into a cool school by her father.. its almost perfect, or so she thought.. Until she found out that she got enrolled as a "BOY". Follow how is she going to resolve her predicament, specially when she starts to like a boy, who is by the way her roommate and also a teammate in basketball. What is she going to do??
This Manga, is soo funny that is addicting. Full of Lovable Characters, crazy antics and will just keep you asking for more!!!!
You havent read this yet, piece of advice!! A MUST READER!!
Good series... however.......2004-06-23
The review format is out of whack. I've seen stuff for Volume 2 marked under the section for Vol 4 or 8. This says it is Volume 10, but likely this very review title is wrong. If this is Volume 10, Volume 10 is the last of the series. The situation with her is resolved finally with her recently being discovered to be female. Is she allowed to stay, and will she find the boy of her dreams? You'll have to find out, I haven't read it either.
MUST READ.......2004-06-10
For all shoujo anime/manga fans out there, this is a must read! Of course, that's only my opinion. I really liked this series and I have already finished reading all of it in Chinese. Also, go read Fruits Basket and HANA-KIMI!!!!
