Book Description
I didn't know it then, but I know it now, that what I said to Harold was like crossing a Rubicon. I had declared myself, there was no turning back. I said what I said with feeling and to someone who up to that moment was like a god on Mt. Olympus. He became Harold St. James, secular savior and friend. I could talk to him. I didn't have to choose my words. I could be Izzy Goldstein.
What will later become the legendary St. James-Goldstein duo at Yale begins on the day World War II breaks out in Europe. Harold St. James and Izzy Goldstein meet on the train to New Haven, Connecticut, and both learn that they will be working together in two different departments in the same building at Yale.
Their oddball friendship becomes fodder for snide comments and campus newspaper articles. But it's a strong friendship that carries them through an initial anti-Semitism, Harold's marriage and his wife's premature death, the House Un-American Activities Committee, the Vietnam War, and the Black Panthers.

Sharing an Important Journey: St. James and Goldstein at Yale.......2006-07-04
Sarason's tale of St. James and Goldstein at Yale is deep in character and historical struggle. The development is both extremely personal and global. It is what Sarason does best, and that is understand the individual and the individual within the various layers of community. Anyone who has a family ethnic history that they have tried to understand in the context of their many communities will identify with the characters. Anyone who has struggled to make the most of their talents and gifts, regardless or because of family, community, institution and contemporary forces should understand the story as personal. Anyone who has seen love lost and friendships won will experience empathy. Anyone who believes that justice and the call to defend the oppressed is not removed for a neatly sliced section of life, nor is it always easy to witness to, is with fine compatriots here.
The story started slowly, but as Sarason developed the characters and allowed their context to evolve and grow in richness, the book became difficult to put down. There are ample phrases and understandings to underline or just absorb. Sarason has put flesh on his many thoughts and insights and that flesh is very human.
This is not just a story of Yale per se. Nor is it just a story of a Jew and a Gentile per se. Those are the settings, the context of very dynamic human emotions, passions and feelings as well as intellectual struggles. They just happen to be very appropriate and excellent vehicles. If the reader doesn't know Yale or the history of the late 1930s through the 1980s, this is an excellent primer. If the reader has experienced these settings of the novel first hand, it makes the journey a friend but does not distract from the thrust of the work.
Professor Sarason Triumphs.......2006-01-06
Yale professor Seymour B. Sarason, the nation's foremost community psychologist, has produced a delightfully compelling novel that chronicles the lives of three friends at Yale - all with extremely varied and dynamic backgrounds - from the day WWII starts and into the 1980s.
The book is many things: a social history of much of the last half century, a probing profile of human relationships as well as an insightful look at personal struggles and professional challenges over decades at Yale.
Having taught at Yale for generations, Professor Sarason turns the tables on students and faculty alike by offering the community at large this poignant and unique look behind the scenes at this extraordinary institution.
Most of all, this gifted psychologist and elegant writer has created vibrant, engaging and inspirational characters of depth and passion that should command the attention of even the most infrequent of readers.
I highly recommend this accessible, touching and revealing work.
St. James and Goldstein at Yale.......2006-01-03
Seymour Sarason, whose seminal books on psychology and education have provoked thought and action in his followers, has recently begun a new career as a novelist. This successful venture demonstrates his courage in avoiding the "one life-one career" mantra followed by most of the writers of his generation. He is now in his mid-eighties and has a zest for living that is contagious.
Sarason's rich character development is riveting--always within clearly defined contexts that will engage those of us who love history and cultural studies. The three main characters in his book respect the traditional values of their parents while at the same time striving for their own identities beginning in the 1940s at Yale. Their friendship and love for each other make all things possible while the author sweeps along the reader in tersely describing all of the difficulties and challenges they face.
This book is a wonderful page-turner that will be difficult to put down once you begin reading it. I hope that Sarason will continue to write other novels that share his talents in the world of fiction. He is the best of us for which we can all give thanks.
St. James and Goldstein at Yale.......2005-12-29
It is a common truth that writers of non-fiction, no matter how talented, cannot make the leap to fiction; the genre is simply too different. Seymour B. Sarason, the writer of numerous world-changing books in the fields of psychology and education, has attempted this leap in writing his first novel. His accomplishment brings to mind what all who know him will recognize as one of his favorite observations: "It's hard to be completely wrong." St. James and Goldstein at Yale is a book that I could not put down once I had started it.
The story starts when Izzy Goldstein, straight from the Jewish ghetto of Brooklyn, takes the train to begin graduate study in psychology at 1940's all-WASP Yale. En route, he meets noted anthropology professor Harold St. James. The two forge a life-long friendship, the story of which composes the core of the book. Modeled recognizably on Sarason, Izzy Goldstein and his friend St. James encounter many of the major historical events of the past sixty years, along with reflection of cultural life and assimilation of Jews and Italians, politics and history, psychology and anthropology, all set within the Yale which has been the writer's life-long home.
Through a long shelf of books that he wrote at a rate of one or two a year, Sarason has challenged prevailing beliefs about psychology and education from a perspective that provokes new examination of reader's beliefs. Here he takes full advantage of the novelistic form to talk about the issues close to his heart in ways beyond which he has ever undertaken before.
Like his protagonist Izzy Goldstein, Sarason has always protected great and sensitive feeling behind a superficially somewhat brusque exterior, betrayed by all who know him by great generosity of spirit and action. Here he tells us something of the deep feeling which ha propelled all of his actions.
For those who have not known of Sarason, this is a great, compelling, and illuminating story. For those who have been blessed, as I have been, to know him as a teacher and a friend, to read the book is worth waiting a lifetime for.

THE WORLD OF KONG
A Natural History of Skull Island
It was an uncharted island somewhere off the coast of Sumatra, it was a land whispered about by merchants and sailors. It was a place so unbelievable that no one dared believe in its existence. Except one man, the extraordinary showman Carl Denham. Many will, of course, remember his show on Broadway and its tragic ending. But New York is not where the story ended, it is where it began.
In 1935 a joint expedition of several prominent universities and organizations called Project Legacy was launched. Its stated mission goal was to create the first of several field guides to Skull Island, a land filled with creatures existing outside of their time, where dinosaurs roamed, evolved, and still lived. Only a year later it was discovered that the island was doomed; the geological forces that had formed the island were now tearing it apart. There were only seven more abbreviated expeditions to the island before its destruction and the start of World War II.
The journals, sketches, and detailed notes of the scientists who braved Skull Island would have continued to gather dust on shelves across the planet were it not for the work of the authors of this book. Here for the first time is their work, collected in a comprehensive edition of the natural history of this lost island. Here is The World of Kong.

I love this book!.......2006-10-09
No, I haven't seen the latest King Kong movie.(not yet anyway) I did however pick up The World of Kong at my local library and loved it! The book is a field guide to Skull Island featuring over 200 pages of fantastic creatures and beautiful artwork. I have to have a copy! Even then I will be begging my 11 year old just to have chance to look at it!
Fantastically Detailed Study of the World of Kong.......2006-08-09
This book is no mere list of the creatures seen in King Kong; this is a fantastic and realistic continuation of the story and fleshing out of the "characters" of Skull Island.
Peter Jackson says in his foreword that, "in the end, what you see in the film represents only a tiny portion of Skull Island's possiblility," and the book works hard to prove that. With over 200 pages of 'research' and facts about the lifestyles and characteristics and evolutionary chains of dozens of animals, this book is no mere tie in to the movie; it is a work of fiction all on its own merit. Many, if not most, of the animals in this book were not featured in the film, and for every single one detailed information is given about the lifestyles and characteristics of the creature. Inside this book, you will find a veritable encyclopedia of knowledge about the world of Kong, information that the movie barely even scratched the surface of. You of course get the obligatory pages about the Vastatosaurus Rex, Venatosaurus Saevidicus, and Kong himself, but you also get info on Aspiscimex Exos, Piranhodon Titanus, Sterculithos Arachne, Chalyceratops Seradorsus, and many, many others that were not in the film.
Also, the art is a wondrous thing to behold as well; the crisp, clean paintings also have a certain edginess to them that is needed for any book about Skull Island. The book is certainly not short of fantastic creatures, and the pictures never fail to inspire.
In short, I urge to buy this book if you were a fan of the movie, but longed to see more of Skull Island. With this book, you will not only learn the origins of Skull Island itself, but also the origins of many of the creatures, and ultimately, the fate of the island itself. So I highly recommend this book, just based on its fascinating merit as a 'research' book, and also because of its fantastically rendered art.
awesome book.......2006-06-12
If youve like "after man" by dougal dixon this book is up there with extreme and bizarre ecology. Awesome art and nice species profiles, the only piece i found lacking was the section on herbivorous chameleons, the description was very short and art was extremely lacking. I own quite a few chameleons species myself and the ones i own are more interesting and amazing looking than what was put in the book it would have been better if they didnt include that at all. otherwise a spectacular book id recommend it to anyone with any interest in animals.
kong rocks!.......2006-03-27
loved your goods great delivery rates and superb condition^^
ive recopmended this seller to allmy freinds who visit amazon
Great Book for those who love the artistry and detail of the movie.......2006-03-15
Let me start my review by saying that you shouldn't buy this book if you didn't like the movie, which should be a given. This book is not a behind-the-scenes look at King Kong, nor is it a book on the process of bringing the World of Kong to life, it's more of a fantasy-encyclopeedia for those who loved the movie and would like to explore the world of Kong further. The book does present some impressive artwork, and its a pity that more of the creatures displayed couldn't be in the movie. This book is a must have for fans of Kong.
Book Description
In 1933, American showman Carl Denham returned from a mysterious, hidden island with a priceless treasure. A treasure not gold or jewels, but the island's barbaric god, a monstrous anthropoid called "Kong." The savage giant escaped and wreaked havoc among the man-made canyons of Manhattan, but within hours of the giant ape's death his body - and Carl Denham - disappeared. Twenty-five years later, the son of Carl Denham makes a shocking discovery that leads him back to the site of his father's greatest adventure and to the answers that will unlock the century's greatest mystery and history's greatest miracle. Authorized by the Cooper Estate and based on the original novel that inspired the all-time classic film. This new novel acts as both prequel and sequel to the classic fantasy tale, King Kong. Acclaimed fantasy artist Joe DeVito and top fantasy and science-fiction writer Brad Strickland join forces to make for an interactive visual-narrative storytelling experience unlike any other.

Answers Questions Everybody Had!!.......2007-05-13
Thought the book was an excellent follow-up to the original movie, and answered questions such as what happened to Denham? What happened to the skeleton after the Empire State fall? Are there any more like him? Very quick read, enjoyed it completely. Fans of the original movie will like this very much
KONG IS KING.......2006-03-15
It answers a lot of questions about how everything is the way it is. Like: Why are the doors in the wall the size of Kong? Where did Kong come from? Who build the wall. What will happen to the island? It also gives a nice account after the fall of Kong.
Nicely done,,,.......2006-01-19
Reading "Kong: King of Skull Island" was a real treat! I found the book to be well written and beautifully illustrated. This book makes Skull Island come alive with very realistic settings and credible native peoples. We learn how the wall that isolates the native population from the islands creatures came to be. And of course we learn of Kong. What his early life and death struggles were like. How he came to be the last of his kind and why he chose skull mountain as his stronghold.
I felt the writing perfectly captured Kong's nature showing us a complex creature of almost human longings yet still a very frightening beast. Hats off to Joe DeVito and Brad Strickland for crafting an engaging and thoroughly enjoyable book.
YIPEE.......2005-12-28
Fianally a book that does justice to the long running King Kong. People complain that it does not connect with the movie "Son of kong". Well guess what, that movie sucks. That's why they made a new book to make a new, bettter ending to King Kong's saga. The artwork is stunning, and Skull Island's origins are also revealed, which I liked. If you loved the old, classic King Kong, BUY THIS BOOK!
Awesome.......2005-12-26
Kong returns once again through the artwork of Joe De Vito. His genius in creating this book shows on every page. Through "Storyteller" the secrets of King Kong and Skull Island are revealed. Is it fantasy or did Kong really live? The secrets are revealed in this spectacular book!

Customer Reviews:
In the beginning.......2006-02-15
Have you seen King Kong at the cinemas or on DVD and wanted certain questions answered; Primarily how Carl Denham obtained the map that showed skull island and about the man that grabbed the map. Well if you want answers to these questions then this is the book for you.
It gives living accounts of characters that appear in the movie of where they were before they all met. Even Kong makes a special appearance; however he is not the main focus of the story.
This is not a story that revolves around Kong. This is most probably the reason why many people would stop reading; however many might want answers to the questions that I did and not be able to put it down.
A Roaring Good Prequel!.......2005-12-02
I found this book to be a very entertaining read! Most movie tie-in books are lame in my opinion. This book has all of the familiar characters from the movie and describes their actions leading up to where the movie begins. A good plot, plenty of action, a visit to Skull Island, and just a hint of Kong himself make this an enjoyable prequel to the movie! Kong Lives!
Ge ready to devour this! .......2005-11-26
For a Kong Kong fan, this book, a fast-paced story, is filled with surprises but also deals with a lot of what you'd want to know. What did Ann Darrow do before she joining Denham's expedition? Or what was Carl Denham doing in the Arctic before he began his search for Skull Island? Or how did Jack Driscoll's literary life in the Manhattan of the 30s hook him up with Denham? And the whole thing is so amazingly atmospheric, like a lost Kong book from 70 years ago..
But then it addresses the two big questions-where did the map to Skull come from...and, more importantly, what is happening on Skull Island to begin with? I doubt the film will touch on either of those two cool mysteries. But Costelo's book does and so well as we join a deep diving ship on a journey to a Skull Island that I bet Merriam C. Cooper never dreamed of. Highly recommended and bound to be devoured in one day.
An amazing read!.......2005-11-25
Did not know what to expect from this novel, a prequel. But it turned out to be a totally compelling curtain raiser for what I think will be PJ's new masterpiece. Filled with secrets and stunning scenes, the book moved like a bullet. Now for the film itself!
a lot of potential sadly unused.......2005-11-20
having heard of a prequel for jackson's film(a different interpretation from merrian cooper's version) i was convinced that the author would have ample opportunity to write a new adventure story with familiar concepts, possibly rich enough in detail and excitement to stand on it's own. seeing the great respect jackson's team had for the original, my expectations seemed logical at the time.
what i found was pointless elaborations about life in 1932 new york, stretched for more than a third of the book, the tribulations of carl denham and jack driscoll equally stretched and the action and history of skull island reduced to an afterthought. i was disappointed with kong not making an apperance(we all know who he is, so if, as a previous reviewr has mentioned, the author was restricted in scope by the studios, such a decision is evidently a negative factor) as well as not developing the potential of the paleontologist that discovered skull island but was supressed by the authorities, and so on.
for a truely wonderful prequel read kong: king of skull island by joe devito and brad strickland.
