Book Description
From the author of our popular Secret Lives of the U.S. Presidents comes another rambunctious look at White House history and this time, women are in the spotlight. Secrets Lives of the First Ladies features outrageous and uncensored profiles of all the presidents' wives.
You'll discover that Dolley Madison loved to chew tobacco. Mary Todd Lincoln was committed to an asylum, and Mamie Eisenhower never missed an episode of As the World Turns. You'll also learn why Hillary Clinton went to work for Wal-Mart (long before she started campaigning for a higher minimum wage).
Complete with biographies of every first lady, Secret Lives of the First Ladies tackles rough questions that other history books are afraid to ask: How many of these women owned slaves? Which ones were cheating on their husbands? And why did Eleanor Roosevelt serve hot dogs to the Kings and Queens of England? American history was never this much fun!

First ladies - First rate.......2007-02-24
Recently a foreign journalist interviewing George W. Bush asked the President of the United States to turn out his pockets. What an interesting, humanizing thing to ask of the most powerful man on Earth. And exactly the kind of thing that never occurs in the burlesque of today's 24 hour electronic news cycle. The contents of our pockets, those little handy nooks that serve as contingency storage for our day-to-day indispensables, speak wonderful, accessible volumes about us as people. Show me what you have in your pockets and, whether or not I know WHO you are, I get a glimpse what KIND of person you are. In Secret Lives of the First Ladies, Cormac O'Brien has politely turned out the pockets of the spouses of each of our presidents, and it's a neat-o treasure trove he uncovers. His style is neither lewd nor exploitative, though, to be sure, there's plenty of juicy stuff here. His project is a sort of cameo portraiture of some forty seven intriguing and often remarkable women. The only flattery in these portraits is a consistent, entertaining, and often astounding disclosure of each woman's individual humanity. It is tempting to read the book in little chunks (as I did at first) owing to its concise chaptering. However, it's a real pleasure go back and review long stretches, watching how the public appearance of the First Lady has evolved over time while her private role has remained remarkably consistent: she is the president's wife. Which is to say, sometimes she is a loving yet diminutive spousal anchor and sometimes she is a headstrong engine of scandal and outrage. Sometimes she is a fully enfranchised partner in even the weightiest decision-making at the executive mansion, including public policy. That there were first ladies fitting all these descriptions in every era since the founding of the republic, to me, was quite amazing. If you know any married couples, you will find the First Ladies, good and bad, tragic and heroic, satisfyingly and entertainingly familiar. Predictably, a frustrating aspect of The Secret Lives of the First Ladies is the rigid brevity of its entries, particularly in chapters describing women whom one would like to examine more closely. The challenge is to keep track of those First Ladies whose full biographies you now want to find and read. Alas, one has the nagging fear that those biographies won't be as frank and entertaining as these admittedly brief introductions. But, such is the nature of this omnibus beast. O'Brien's prose is a yummy balance of richness and skim-ability with very few false notes. The design and illustration are a constant reassurance that this is a social visit and not a college text. You're here to make friends and there is no requirement to pass a final exam. A pleasure to read cover-to-cover or simply to table hop as you meet these one-of-a-kind ladies. Of its genre, this is an A+.

If you like trivia, you'll enjoy this book. If you have only enough time to read short chapters or a few pages at a time, again, you'll like this book. Each chapter, which is about one first lady, is only a few pages in length -- perfect for bedtime reading for tired moms like me. There was enough information about each first lady to pique my interest, and make me want to find more in-depth biographies about many of the women.
Worth reading!.......2006-02-27
A very good read! Interesting facts about all the first ladies. It is sure to make you laugh. You will find out things you did not know. Entertaining.
interesting trivia - too bad the typeset is so tiny and feint.......2006-01-17
Warning: Do not buy this book for an elderly person, people with bifocals or people who wear glasses to read - unless you can get it in LARGE print.
I bought this book for my mother. However, the typeset is soooooo small and light weight that the words literally just looked like lines on the page to her.
Much better ... for what it is.......2005-09-17
I didn't think Cormac O'Brien's previous book, "The Secret Lives of the U.S. Presidents," was worth a lot. Though some reviewers raved about how he brought forgotten presidents "to life" for them, I still fail to see the point in bringing William Henry Harrison "to life" if all you know about him are a couple of People Magazine irrelevancies. Combine that with conventional political sneers breezily delivered and you've got perfect modern history-writing.
"Oh lighten up. It's all in fun." Okay: If you liked the author's last dive into hip, ironic, personality-driven history, you'll probably like this one. In fact, I found it less objectionable because the relative historical anonymity -- even insignificance -- of most American first ladies fits better with the author's interest in trivia in the first place. (I recall one newspaper editor gushing about Jacqueline Kennedy not long ago, saying something to the effect that she was "the first first lady to go to college, the first one to have lived overseas, the first one to speak a foreign language!" None of which is even remotely true.)
While O'Brien largely glossed over most of what was important in the presidents' terms in office, his thumbnail biographies of the first ladies tend to be balanced and fairly comprehensive. And although he still gets his digs in at Nixon, Reagan, and George Dubya, his chapters on Mrs. Nixon, Mrs. Reagan, and Mrs. Bush (both of them, actually) are fair and even sympathetic.
I'm not sure precisely who the target market is for this book. But if people in that demographic are seeking lightweight reading that tells them a little bit, maybe, about American history and politics, then I suppose this will suit them well enough.

Biblical, practical, and wise.......2000-11-28
I have not yet read this entire book, but I did read a chapter excerpted in "Cornerstone Magazine" this month (November, 2000). I have also read several of Backus's other books, such as "The Hidden Rift With God," which was excellent.
The chapter I read was on the sin of sloth. Backus address the psychological, spiritual, and moral dimensions of depression as it relates to the "deadly sin" of sloth. I found it to be balanced, biblical, and historically grounded in that the author refers to spiritual doctors of the church who have addressed matters of sin and righteousness in the Christian life. He also used a case study to illustrate how "telling ourselves the truth" about our situations and God's character leads to spiritual liberation. This is the main theme of Dr. Backus's works over the years.
The book addresses "the seven deadly sins" and how to overcome them in the Christian life. From what I read in the excerpt, and from what I have read before, I'm sure this is a fine book. I plan to get it and read it soon. Maybe I'll give another review then.

Book Description
From national bestselling author Rochelle Alers comes the powerful story of one woman and the secrets that will forever alter her vision of her family, her marriage, and herself.
In one night, Morgana Johnson-Wells takes two hard hits: first, news that her mother has died, then evidence that her husband is having an affair. Fleeing Baltimore to tend to her mother's estate in Salvation, Georgia, Morgana finds comfort in the company of her Uncle Julian and in the diaries her mother left hidden in the attic.
Shocked by her mother's most private thoughts and confused about both her illusions of her own childhood and the fate of her marriage, Morgana is drawn to local artist Erick Wilson, with whom she shares the kind of intimacy she and her husband have lost along the way. The connection grows deep, and by the time all of her mother's secrets are revealed, Morgana has a few secrets of her own...secrets of the heart, mind, and body that need never be told.

Learning To Trust Again.......2005-09-14
Secrets Never Told tells of two generations of families with epeated histories of marriage problems. Through out the book, ach of the marriages goes into the brinks of destruction but in he end it always remains in tact. The beginning of the story was low, but as the story continues, it becomes more interesting and suspenseful.
Morgana and Erick are the two main character of Secrets Never Told and the story tells of how each of them must learn to live and love again while dealing with the decisions that have to be made. The events of the past take a turn for the worst leading into an eventful story full of past events that causes turbulence in Morgana's life.
A WORK OF ART .......2005-07-07
Once again, this was another page turner by Rochelle. This was a story well written and quite captivating. From the moment I started reading, I couldn't put the book down. What I found most interesting was Katherine's Journal. Also, the way the story ended kind of left somethings to the reader's imagination. Especially Uncle Julian's so called secret.
For a moment I was hoping for a sequel. I immediately changed my mind and felt that the book lived well up to it's title. End of story.
A Very Pleasant Read...............2004-07-15
My girlfriend recommended this book to me and boy I'm glad that she did. I finished this book in two days! I liked the way that Ms. Alers jumped back and forth from the present to the past which is not an easy task for a writer. Morgana goes home to bury her mother and discoveries these wonderful diaries which gives her a glimpse into another side of her mother. These diaries also helped Morgana to come to terms with her own marriage to Franklin. Morgana meets a young man named Erick while in Salvation who helps her come alive again and in the process, Morgana realizes that everyone makes mistakes and that forgiveness is the key to heal open wounds. Which is not an easy task when one is confronted with infidelity!
Her work just gets better and better.......2004-07-08
Let me start off by saying that I love the book. When you think about relationships, you have to realize that relationships are not going to be perfect. And i think that the approach that Ms. Alers took addressing this topic was superb. I will derfinitely recommend this book to any and everybody I know. Good read..
She's Done It Again!!!.......2004-04-30
I enjoyed this story from start to finish, as I have all of the others stories written by Rochelle. I couldn't put this book down! I found myself waking up in the wee hours of the morning BEFORE the alarm would go off just to connect again with Katherine on her quest to find herself after experiencing the loss her Mom and Marriage on the same evening and proving that most times you "HAVE TO" LOSE in order to GAIN. I could relate with EVERY Joy, Hurt and Triumph. I expected her to admit to her Uncle Julian after reading her Mother's journals that she knew who he really was to her. She had the Perfect blend of characters to take this book to many levels of suspence and surprise. Rochelle is one of my favorite writers and I would like to take this time to Thank and encourage her to keep up the "GOOD" work. I can't wait for the next book, but what choice do I have?

Customer Reviews:
Not what I was hoping for..........2007-01-26
I saw this book online and thought it would be great because of the author. Since this is my first time being pregnant, it was kinda cute to read the little tidbits in each section, but the first reviewer was right. No brilliant, funny, or even little know jewels are shared in this book. I paid a total of about $3 for this book with the shipping, and that's all it's worth. It would make an ok gift for a first time mom, but please don't pay full price!
3rd Grade Reading Level Or Lower Required.......2006-11-27
51 Secrets of Motherhood should be entitled "The 51 useless and most annoying chiches you will hear while pregnant". Presented as a book that is full of good advice your mother will forget to tell you, it's really full of the tidbits you've known since you were 13 and your mother would not insult you by mentioning. It reads only slightly better than a coloring book and prides itself in reminding you that "your life will change" and "pregnancy isn't obesity" as if you've never been privy to such information.
Even worse is the horn-blowing prologue about the author that sets your expectations high for the book. I honestly thought Rebecca Matthias would have some incredible wisdom to share in these pages because, after all, she is the founder of three large boutique maternity chains. Unfortunately she couldn't impart any real or useful wisdom so she published a book dripping with antiquated sayings and pointless "advice", masquerading as a "real" pregnancy book, in order to make an extra buck. This book should not be purchased for anything else than a maternity gag gift and is best shared over lunch with other expecting friends so you can all roll your eyes in unison.

Customer Reviews:
Why this is a "must" read for creating health in your life!.......1999-09-15
The author talks about complex and mystifying subjects that we've had a lot of conflicting information about, like fats for example. She is able to make the subject clear, understandable and put it into ordinary language without condescending to the reader. By the time you've finished reading what Dr. Boice has to say about fats, you realize the issue is complex, and that there is a lot of partial and contradictory information floating around. You also realize you can do something intelligent and healthy about fats in your diet.
The thing I liked best about Dr. Boice's book is that she invites me to participate in creating my own healthy life style and then involves me in the process through goal-setting worksheets. A lot of books try to motivate by guilt or fear and condemnation. Dr. Boice motivates by accepting that everyone is an individual and each person has a different starting point for creating a healthy life style.
Dr. Boice motivates us to take charge of our own lives in this area that we have given over to the "experts" in nutrition, medicine and chemistry. Her approach is also truly "whole"-istic because she reminds us that we are not just a physical body, but also emotional, mental and spiritual. By the time I finished But My Doctor Never told Me That! I realized how common sense a healthy life style can be. I highly recommend this book!
Useable, Empowering, Readable!.......1999-06-30
I read many books on health--alternative and conventional--and this is one of the best combo books I've read. Instead of preaching--to the converted or the unconverted, Dr. Boice invites the reader learn about the "secrets" to optimal health and then invites us on the journey of life long choices to reaching our own personal health goals. I've never seen anything quite like it. I also compliment the author on her writing abililty--it becomes apparent in the "educating" parts of her books. She's facile at explaining chemistry in an understandable, easy to visualize way and NOT be patronizing. That in itself is a feat. Speaking of visuals, this is a very interactive book, with drawings and pages to write in to work out your vision for a healthy life. I recommend this book!

Customer Reviews:
It's better to burn out than to fade away.......2006-03-26
X-Statix vs. the Avengers contains three story arcs. One is "The Cure", the next is "X-Statix vs. the Avengers" and the final issue of the series, which is in a league of its own.
In the Cure, which reprints X-Statix #19 & 20, Myles Alfred, Vivisector decides to `cure' himself of his mutant gene, in order to make a normal life for himself with his new lover and to please his parents. In the end, he learns that not only is the grass not greener on the other side, but the price of his actions could be more than he, or X-Statix can pay.
In X-Statix vs. The Avengers, which reprints X-Statix #21-25, more of Doop's mysterious background and power capacity is revealed, but it leads to Doop's brain exploding. Both the X-Statix and the Avengers (who want Doop for themselves) chase around the world and battle each other for the brain pieces. Some truly funny moments happen. The fight between Mr. Sensitive and Iron Man is worth the price of the graphic novel.
Then, in the final issue, X-Statix #26, everyone is getting ready to disband the team that has brought them wealth and recognition. But one final payday proves to be a proposal that is too tempting to walk away from. And, much like other X-Statix tales, this one doesn't have that happy of an ending....
Milligan and Allred poured their hearts into this series, and it shows. This graphic is one of the strongest in the X-Statix line, and would make a fine addition to any comic collectors graphic novel shelf.
Recommended.
Get the Whole Series.......2006-01-05
This is an exceptional series by an exceptional team.
(...)
The epitome of post modern superhero storytelling - but in a way that most people can relate to. Highly intelligent and well illustrated!!
I loved it with the exception of the last issue.......2005-02-08
I won't reveal what happens in the last issue but i do want to say that it was the only way the series could have ended. On that note, I wish that it would have been a better ending but it didn't satisfy me emotionally. the rest of the stories are very well done and X-Force/X-Statix stands as one of the best contemporary superhero comics.
As a whole, after U Go Girl died in X-Force and the name was changed (I don't consider this a spoiler since if you've read this far then you know it and if you're just picking it up then she is referenced like once as a member who died), the series did seem to lose its emotional core but continue with the same quality of storytelling.
While the art is very good, the fill in art throughout the series has been uneven. The allred stuff has been superb though.
Kudos to Peter Milligan and Mike Allred, the most unorthodox superhero creative team that pulled off a great comic.
