5 out of 5 stars Classic of lasting value, early focus on C4I, rotary, OoA Op.......2004-01-14

This is one of the essential "middle ground" books in my lecture of core readings about strategy and force structure (see my list).

Brigadier Simpkin was one of the first, and is still among the best, to focus on the role that both C4I (command, control, communications, and intelligence) as well as rotary wing capabilities (including vertical short take off and landing) would play in placing eyes on target, boots on the ground, and in strategic, operational, and tactical mobility.

He notes that secret C4I is largely counterproductive.

He also focuses on the dramatic implications for force structure as well as intelligence of "out of area" (OoA) operations becoming the norm. The United States and the rest of the world are, for example, completely unprepared for no-notice asymmetric and tribal warfare in Africa, where the United Nations is trying to deal with five complex emergencies as this is written (Burundi, Congo, Ivory Coast, Liberia, and Sudan).

If you can get a copy used, go for it. Worth republishing.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful, forward thinking military theory.......2001-10-16

"Race to the Swift" is a sweeping review of military strategy, organization and logistics that has suffered little for being 15 years old. Yes, the NATO references are dated, but they in no way impact a core thesis that is even today ahead of its time. That said, this not an easy book to read; in spite of Simpkin's rather engaging, almost conversational writing style, the material is technical and dense. Moreover, given the comprehensiveness of the work, the reader will sometimes find himself or herself losing focus. However, if you are a student of military theory, and comfortable with the field, this is a book well worth the time it takes to read.

As one might imagine, "Race to the Swift" is a call for speed and stealth in military action. It's not just about technology, however; Simpkin goes to great lengths to examine political/home-front issues, logistics, and military hierarchy. Ultimately, though, these all serve as supporting evidence for his core argument: that the current heavy mechanized divisions of today are too slow in light of the incredible increase in available firepower on the modern battlefield. As an alternative, he calls for armored, stealthy, heliborne cavalry. Traveling in something akin to airborne tanks, capable of deploying on conventional tracks when necessary, these new formations would deploy off of submersible helicopter carriers. Obviously, this thinking is more revolutionary than evolutionary, some of it even smacks of science fiction, but the core validity of his argument, that an exponential increase in speed is called for, is undeniable.

Of particular note for the times we live in are the final few chapters, especially the last one. In them he examines what it means to "wage war" in the age of non-state actors. His arguments on the use of Special Forces backed by the appropriate application of conventional forces seems to have been borrowed wholesale by the planners of our operations in Afghanistan. Also very interesting is Simpkin's exploration of the legal language necessary to maintain the integrity of our western values in our post September 11th world.

In the end this is a work of immense value. As I said earlier, though, the reader has to be committed to taking something out of it. When you are, when you look past the Central European staging for the writing, you will find a work that is rich in both theory and practical application. The way in which it relates to our current situation is almost uncanny, and the guideposts it offers for the future are immensely valuable. I suspect that in the years to come we will hear many of Simpkin's ideas being revisited. The nation in general, and our leaders in particular would do well to pay them heed sooner rather than later.

5 out of 5 stars Finally Back in Print.......2000-11-29

Not for your average Joe, but Simpkin's thesis should not be lost on anyone: swiftness. Since first published, the world has witnessed numerous conflicts which either could have been avoided, concluded earlier, or fought more decisively if effective forces could have been deployed much faster. It is incredibly pertinent in the emerging era of the asymetrical approach, where threats emerging faster and in a wide variety of terrain. (We can't expect future adversaries to give us months to build up massive mechanized forces in ideal terrain like Hussien did!) Simpkin points out very practical limitations to our current heavy forces -- like getting a 70 tonne tank over a third-world bridge or down a narrow twisting road. As the US Army begins retooling for the 21st century, Simpkin's work is incredibly relevant. Not the easiest book to follow, but worth the effort.

5 out of 5 stars The sharp edge of the cutting edge.......2000-09-30

Brigadier Simpkin in this work takes us to the cutting edge of battle asking for 3-D maneuver-capable "airmechanized" forces. These are forces that would have a combination flying aircraft and armored tank. This is still way ahead of its time as we are still struggling to get fixed and rotary-wing aircraft together with light tracked Armored Fighting Vehicles (AFVs) as the new book Air-Mech-Strike:3-Dimensional Phalanx by Dave Grange's group quotes Simpkin heavily. Simpkin is right though, we could create a LIGHT armored personnel carrier with rubber "band tracks" that could fold its rotors after flight if the same turbine engine that powered flight was geared to charge electric batteries/motors for silent stealthy operation--it would be a superb scout/recon machine that wouldn't have to burn fuel constantly to remain in a hover like today's scout helicopters, but could set down on the ground and revert to a less energing demanding ground vehicle operation. The entire Air/Land Fighting Vehicle would be made out of non-metallics and be radar-invisible. We could do this if we had the WILL in America to do great things, we certainly have the know-how (TECHNOLOGY) ; we only have to look at nature to see many types of flying insects that are dual ground/air movement capable. If we were to read Simpkin's book and allow ourselves to be re-inspired perhaps we could once again lead the way with conceptual greatness again in America.

THE RACE BELONGS TO THE SWIFT, BRIGADIER SIMPKIN!

5 out of 5 stars Serious Thinking for the Serious Professional.......2000-04-08

First published in 1985, Brigadier Simpkin's book has a forward from General Donn Starry and another from MajGen Perry Smith, USAF (Ret.) and one of our best strategic thinkers. It is the best book I have found to date with which to begin any discussion about the future of warfare. This was the book that inspired my conceptualization of the four warrior classes and also deepened my understanding of the relationships between mobility, accuracy, intelligence, tempo, mass, politics, and cost.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Intellectual.......2007-03-09

Swift Thoughts (2002) is a collection of twenty-four SF short stories. These short works were originally published between 1973 and 2001 in a variety of venues. While most first appeared in the science fiction (and fantasy) magazines and anthologies, some were written for nontraditional publications such as a Japanese AI journal, Popular Computing, and Nature.

In this collection, The Word Sweep speculates on the consequences of words becoming physical objects upon utterance. Starcrossed concerns a probe ship guided by a cyborg brain. The Eichmann Variations considers an unusual form of mental torture. This Life and Later Ones is a cautionary tale about downloaded personalities. The City of Thought and Steel tells of the afterthoughts and nightmares of a mass murderer.

Godel's Doom conveys a way to prove Godel's Theorem and the possible aftereffects. Lenin in Odessa is an alternate history tale or is it? Sacred Fire is a story about future generations and the way they differ from their parents. Stooges introduces a novel means of first contact. Bridge of Silence conveys the frustrations of first contact with a truly alien creature.

Swift Thoughts is about a Moses who cannot enter the Promised Land. The Idea Trap relates the tale of a misfit who is perfect for a supporting role. Behind the Night provides new insight on immigration policies. Wound the Wind asks whether people should be forced to do something for their own good. Rope of Glass is about a man who isn't sure of what he is doing or why.

In the Distance and Ahead in Time is a side story of the Macrolife chronicles, telling of the differences between those on planets and those who travel the stars. Lesser Beasts concerns a Vietnam War veteran who kills alien invaders. The Number of the Sand is about the alternate histories of Hannibal and Scipio the Elder. Let Time Meet tells of the settlement of the New World by Carthagean refugees. Shrinkers & Movers is a tale of moving to a new home and the problems that can occur.

Augie concerns the problems of raising an Artificial Intelligence. The Last Science Fiction Story of the 20th Century is about difficulties of SF writers in the future. Catch the Sleep Ship: The First Science Fiction Story of the 21st Century tells of the demise of SF and one way of bypassing the problem. The Holdouts is about the results of a paradigm shift in physics.

This collection has an introduction by Gregory Benford and Author Notes following each story. These notes contain a good deal of musing on SF writing and philosophy, as do some of the stories themselves. One most unsettling thought is the decline of SF after a theory of everything is introduced. Naturally, this reviewer must disagree since SF would then absorb every other form of fiction (except pure fantasy) as biology, psychology, sociology and all other natural sciences are reduced to physics.

This collection is not for everyone. The author tends to excessive intellectualization in his short works. Sometimes they are way over almost everybody's head and interests. Too much Zebrowski can be hazardous to your mental health (at least for short works, but his novels are more commonplace). It is time for me to return to more active and less cognitive science fiction and fantasy.

Highly recommended for Zebrowski fans and for anyone who enjoys tales of high concepts, mental conundrums and other intellectual fare.

This new collection presents original stories which focus on the theme of evolving artificial intelligences and the questions about humanity versus machine which evolve. From the question of whether a clone of Adolf Ecihmann will ever show remorse for Nazi history to the rationing of speech when words begin to take physical form, [Swift] Thoughts is packed from cover to cover with unexpected twists which will delight both seasoned fans and those who are newcomers to Zebrowski's art.

Enhanced with an informative introduction by Gregory Benford, Swift Thoughts is a superbly presented anthology of twenty-four science fiction short stories written by the undeniably talented George Zebrowski. From an alien takeover of one of the Stooges to the strict rationing of words in an era when speech has physical form, to hardcore sci-fi and tales of excitement and pushing human boundaries, Swift Thoughts in an engaging, varied, and enjoyable read for science fiction buffs in general, and George Zebrowski fans in particular!

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant collection by one of the field's masters.......2002-04-24

George Zebrowski is one of the most philosophically astute writers in science fiction, and this collection of his insightful, mind-bending tales is long overdue. It's no surprise that one of his stories is a Nebula Award nominee as I write this. If there's a successor to Olaf Stapledon, it's Zebrowski. Highly recommended.

      Book Description

This extended study of the treatment of the physical, material nature of the human body in the works of Jonathan Swift and Daniel Defoe examines the role that literary invention (with its rhetorical and linguistic strategies) plays in expressing and exploring the problems of physicality. The book takes up a wide range of issues relating to the body such as sexuality, cannibalism, scatology, and the fear of contagion. In an eclectic synthesis of recent critical approaches, Professor Flynn draws insight from biographical and psychoanalytic criticism as well as social history. Application of feminist theory offers an original and challenging discussion of renditions of female sexuality in both Defoe and Swift.

        Book Description

Jonathan Swift’s prose has been discussed extensively as satire, but its major structural element, parody, has not received the attention it deserves. Focusing mainly on works before 1714, and especially on A Tale of a Tub, this study explores Swift’s writing primarily as parody. Robert Phiddian follows the constructions and deconstructions of textual authority through the texts on cultural-historical, biographical, and literary-theoretical levels. The historical interest lies in the occasions of the parodies: in their relations with the texts and discourses which they quote and distort, and in the way this process reflects on the generation of cultural authority in late Stuart England. The biographical interest lies in a new way of viewing Swift’s early career as a potentially Whiggish intellectual. The theoretical and interpretative interest lies in tracing the play of language and irony through parody.

          Book Description

Modern scholarship has represented Jonathan Swift as both an Old Whig and a non-Jacobite Tory. Ian Higgins’ contextual reassessment of Swift’s political writing and recorded opinion considers the interpretative problems they present. It explores the consonance of Swift’s political writing with militant Jacobite Tory writing on affairs of Church and State, and demonstrates Swift’s dissimilarity from the Old Whig writers with whom modern criticism has misleadingly identified him. Swift's writings of the 1690s, during the last four years of Queen Anne’s reign, and after the Hanoverian succession are shown to contain Jacobitical political implications when examined in their context in the ‘paper wars’ of the period. Higgins concentrates on the partisan meanings of the great satires A Tale of a Tub and Gulliver's Travels, and represents Swift (as he was read by his contemporaries) as a disaffected High Church Anglican extremist with Jacobite inclinations.

                4 out of 5 stars Smart.......2007-10-01

I think that it can be hard to create a story that the reader cannot get ahead of; especially in this genre: the good guys win, and win within the pages that remain in your right hand.

The Alabaster Staff follows the same format, but within that form featured some characters that I couldn't get ahead of. There is a breaking and entering section that I still think about years after reading it. The flavor of the town the story is set in is still on my brain. While that says something about me, it certainly says something about the book as well.

If you are a collector of Realms stories, then you won't need any encouragement. For everyone else I found this book worth the risk that you take when putting your irreplaceable time on the line.

                3 out of 5 stars Fun Story.......2007-04-08

This book is a fun and light read. It's an interesting take on the rogue class, though I was a bit disappointed in the high morality shown by the main character. It seemed a little unbelievable considering her poverty and growing up on the streets, which was demonstrated very well by the author. The climax of the book was titantic and well worth the read.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Series as a whole.......2007-03-31

Great Series! As Forgotten Realms books go this series was a great read. It's nice to see a series cover a different area of the Realms other than the more popular "conflicted" areas. The characters were interesting and the plot and story carried it well enough that the books were a fairly easy read.

                4 out of 5 stars Nice.......2007-01-12

The book is about a young street entertainer getting forced into a race after an artifact wanted by a number of factions in Messemprar, the largest city of Free Unther.
The plot is strong, with a fine number of twists, some more predictable than the others. The leading character is a bit to "good" to be believable, given the circumstances of her life. The supporting characters try to stay away from stereotypes as much as possible, and some of them are quite memorable. The author does a fantastic job of picturing a truly miserable and depressive atmosphere prevalent in a poor, war-torn city.
The writing style is not great, but not bad either.
The Alabaster Staff is a story of a "small" person getting caught in events that are way out of her league, and trying to survive. So, if you are expecting epic battles, heaps of monsters and other stuff usually associated with fantasy genre, you aren't going to get any. And, in my opinion, it is a good thing. The book is also battle-light, with more space given to thieving expeditions and plotting, which is another thing I liked.
On the downside, the book is painfully slow to start, and it has a slightly cliché ending. Could have done much better without it, really. There is also much repeating introspective on behalf of the main character. I know that introspective is in the service of character development, but if the same things are repeated chapter after chapter, it gets rather tiresome. The villains in the book are naïve at moments, but at moments only.
It is kind of a book I expected from "Rogues" series. If you liked Salvatore's "Servant of a Shard" for more reasons than Jarlaxle and Entreri, you should like this book. If you are more into epic fantasy, this may not be a book for you. All in all, an above-average FR novel.

                5 out of 5 stars A large cut above.......2006-01-25

Edward Bolme brings to life another wonderful novel with this story based in the Forgotten Realms. This is not simply just another adventure tale (though it is also that) set in a complex political/religious city, but part mystery and part life lesson as well.

Ed weaves a complex tale of a land fighting to maintain its own existence amidst a choatic background of both religious and political strife. Be prepared for something more than your typical tale of sword swinging and spell hurling adveturers in this one. The characters are at the same time complex and believable. It continually forces the main characters to question who they can trust, while at the same time forcing them to rely on the help of others to complete their goals.

The main character a rogue street performer struggles to hold onto the ideals of her beloved mother, and of a father that she has never even met. Not your typical rogue. When forced to steal, she doesn't attempt to better her position in life (which could stand a great deal of bettering) but rather gives her precious boon away to those in even greater need than she.

This book paints a beautiful picture of a city torn between the religion of their ancestors; a power hungry god who has been overthrown and slain, and the religion of the new god in the area. Tiamat, she who slew the former diety in power. At the same time the city is fighting for survival in a war against superior foes.

Enter Kehrsyn, the street performer. Because of her skills and anonymity she is thrown into the middle of a complex struggle for power between several different factions within the city. All those who would use her for their goals give her but a taste of the truth, only enough to keep her on their hook, believing that theirs is the most just cause. All the while she wants nothing more than to see the lot of the common man bettered in life, but first she has to figure out who she can trust, and how to save her own skin.

I highly recommend this book, whether you are a fan of Faerun or not, it is simply a great read.
