Perfect Timing.......2007-09-28
I thought Perfect Timeing was the best well written. I love Maxine Chandler there not a person who has a Friend like her. I was so glad that she and Chrispother Chandler found that they were in Love with each other. Also that her Best friend Mya and Garrett realized that that there Marriage should be Saved. I cannot wait to Read Perfect Fit. Brenda Jackson is such a wonderful writer. I love all of here books.
Good story.......2006-06-15
I enjoyed this book it is more a romance novel. For once its the hero with more hangups than the heroine re Maxi and Chris. However I agree that Myra blew things way, way, way out of proportion, when she saw the hussy with her husband she should have approached them, to me she wimped out and almost destroyed her marriage cos of it.
This was a beautiful book!!.......2006-04-24
i finished this book in like a day or 2 and i have school. this book really got me into reading Brenda Jackson's books!! i recommend this book 2 any1 who likes romance. it was such a sweet book and it had a really sweet ending!!
Loved, Loved the Book.......2006-03-10
Perfect Timing by Brenda Jackson is a novel about forgiveness, acceptance of others and dealing with issues from childhood that follows us into adulthood. Way to go with your teachings Brenda! This book was a wonderful read and entertaining as well as inspriational. Brenda told a great story from cover to cover.
Good weekend book.......2005-08-09
Overall: I liked the story and it kept me interested.
What I liked: The chemistry between Christopher and Maxi; when Ronald got put in his place; the love of Garret and Mya; Christopher and Maxi's first kiss (yowza!); I thought beginning with Mya and Maxi as little girls was precious.
What I didn't like: Mya's reaction to what Garret did. I mean, COME ON! I am not making light of what he did, but I'll be dog gonned if I'm gonna let my marriage get to the verge of divorce over something like that; Why did Mya have such a demanding job? Her husband makes millions and she could easily stay home comfortably with her children. I'm sorry, that seemed a bit selfish to me. I'm a wife, mother and I work full time. I totally understand wanting to have something established outside of the home. There is nothing wrong with that. Like Mya, I didn't go to college just to get a husband. If I wanted to, I could go after a job that would pay more and require lots of travel, but I don't. It is important to me (and should have been for Mya) that I be home every night with my family; Christopher seemed to make his offer to Maxi just a little to quickly considering he never wanted to get seriously involved.
Like I said, it's an overall good weekend book, but nothing spectacular in my opinion.

Pure Fun.......2006-05-03
Jill Mansell writes the most charming, wonderful Brit Lit, that it's really hard to differentiate plot. She has an unerring way of drawing the reader to her very real characters, so that when they get into their impossible scrapes, romantic and otherwise, we are simply charmed.
"Perfect Timing" is no exception. Our heroine, Poppy, meets a tall dark stranger on her "hen night" (British for bachelorette party) and realizes to her horror that she is not ready to get married. She horrifies all and sundry in her small Bristol neighborhood by breaking off the engagement on the morning of the wedding itself--and hies herself off to London to hide.
There, she promptly gets herself two jobs, and elbows her way into a large house owned by laid-back up-and-coming artist Caspar French, who already has one roommate, voluptuous and very VERY jealous Claudia. Poppy moves in, and the fun just rumbles on from page to page.
During the story, romances are made and broken, hilarious characters appear and disappear, there are tears, some best-to-be-forgotten all-night bashes, and of course everything turns out just fine in the end.
Another Mansell gem!

It's time for the USA to discover Jill Mansell!.......2002-02-05
For this genre (and we all know what it is!!) "Perfect Timing" is, well, perfect. Yes, some of the characters and plot lines are a bit over the top, but life can be a bit wacky too. The dialog is funny and the story moves along just like you'd want it to. I like the twist on the story that's too good to be true - we all know that if it seems too good to be true, it usually is. For those of you who aren't familiar with Jill Mansell's books, she usually takes one or two outrageous elements to begin with. To this, she adds a cast of totally realistic and believable characters that make the whole thing ring true. The result is just enough escapism, with a good balance of real life. She also writes solid dialog that rings true, with gentle humor and wit. She's written many, many wonderful books - too bad this is the only one that's available (as of today) on Amazon in the US. If you like Perfect Timing, I suggest trying Amazon.uk for her other books.
She's written better.......2001-10-17
It's a great book, but she's written some incredible books that you just can't put down. Great for a light hearted read, but read her other books!
A Wonderful Brit - Chick Book.......2001-03-12
I'm a huge fan of Jill Mansell's work.. I must have about 6 of her novels and this is one of my top favs. I found her to be amazingly romantic and creative. She can weave a romantic comdedy like very few others can... "Perfect Timing" is a great little gem that you'll enjoy for that easy - lazy days.
The whole set - up of meeting the man of your dreams right before you walk down that aisle opens up so many options. It allows for every possible senerio. I loved the pace, charm and characters. It's wildly romantic.. I think you'll like it.

For a new generation.......2007-05-06
Derby Day seems like the perfect day to share this book. Isaac Murphy was a three time Kentucky Derby winner and is the only jockey buried on the grounds of the famous Kentucky Horse Park.
Author, Patsi Trollinger makes the point that Isaac Burns Murphy's timing was perfect in life as well as on the track. The son of a slave, he lived at a time when black jockeys could enjoy a successful career in racing, before they were forced out of the sport early in the 20th century.
Trollinger describes his career beginning with his early training in Lexington where he learned the importance of pace and concentration. Murphy went on to become one of the most sought after jockeys of his time. The exciting match race between Salvatore and Tenny is told in such detail that the reader feels like they are standing at the rail watching the race.
Jerome Lagarrigue's soft focus paintings convey the speed and power of the horses. The colors are dark and muddied which imparts the yesteryear feel of the story. The reader eyes do need to linger on the pictures to fully appreciate and discern the images.
Isaac Burns Murphy had a reputation for honesty and fair play.
"He had rules for himself that were firm: no cheating, no fighting, no swearing. And he rode every race, large of small, as if it was the most important one of his life."
This is a lovely tribute to a man of character and who might otherwise be unknown to this generation.

Patsi B. Trollinger, Perfect Timing: How Isaac Murphy Became One of the World's Greatest Jockeys (Viking, 2006)
Isaac Murphy. Even now, over a century after his death, the very mention of his name inspires reverence among most racing fans. Patsi Trollinger gives a good intro to Murphy's life and career in Perfect Timing, a book aimed at, roughly, the preschool set. Her clear prose is well-complemented by Jerome LaGarrigue's impressionist illustrations. A worthy addition to the bookshelf of any horse racing fan, or any horse racing fan's child. ****
Perfect Reading!.......2006-09-25
In PERFECT TIMING, Patsi Trollinger has succeeded in encapsulating the fascinating life of Isaac Murphy, the grandson of slaves--and one of the all-time winningest jockeys in the world. From his first ride on Volcano, which earned Isaac his place in jockey school, through his wins at racetracks around the United States, his marriage, an all-important match between Isaac (and a horse named Salvator) and a horse named Tenny, his struggles in his later years, and his death at the young age of thirty-five in 1896, PERFECT TIMING delivers. Paintings by Jerome Lagarrigue compliment the lively story--an all-around beautiful book! I recommend this picture book biography wholeheartedly!

A book that tugs at your emotions from all directions........2006-11-05
I could easily put myself in the place of the main character of this book. She had a great life but she didn't really know it because she took everything for granted until her world was turned upside down. She felt lost until others helped her realize that a few bumps in the road shouldn't shake her faith. God was still watching over her and she could still find the happiness she had always dreamed she would someday have.

"Time After Time" by Jo Leigh. NYU graduate student Betty Kroger dissertation topic is The Social Impact of Sexual Mores During WW II; a perfect topic for her as she feels out of place as if she was born in the wrong time. However, when she is sent to 1945, Betty feels more at home feeling she will find her true love in this period especially after meeting dear John Stevens.
These three torrid time travel romances are fun tales connected by the modern day sex exhibit, strong protagonists, and solid story lines.

A Ripping Good Yarn.......2000-06-08
Peter Caddy was a man of many talents, a natural-born leader whose adventures during the war, climbing the Himilayas, running a Scottish hotel, then founding and leading an alternative spiritual community and becoming a world traveler and teacher make for fascinating reading. As they used to say, this is an exciting, "ripping good yarn" about a man who dedicated his whole life to God and to the emergence of a better world for humanity. This book is extremely fun to read and comes highly recommended for anyone interested in modern alternative spiritual and esoteric movements, the New Age, Rosicrucians, spiritual communities, or just a good biography. The last chapter was written by Peter's new wife after he was killed in an automobile accident and contains more of her perspective and philosophy than his, even going so far as to turn his life into an object lesson on the greatness of her particular Indian guru and making Caddy seem like an Eastern devotee rather than the initiate of the Western Mystery Tradition that he was, but if you ignore all that, you will be treated to a wonderful story about a remarkable human being.

Mervyn Peake's gothic masterpiece, the Gormenghast trilogy, begins with the superlative Titus Groan, a darkly humorous, stunningly complex tale of the first two years in the life of the heir to an ancient, rambling castle. The Gormenghast royal family, the castle's decidedly eccentric staff, and the peasant artisans living around the dreary, crumbling structure make up the cast of characters in this engrossing story. Peake's command of language and unique style set the tone and shape of an intricate, slow-moving world of ritual and stasis:
The walls of the vast room which were streaming with calid moisture, were built with gray slabs of stone and were the personal concern of a company of eighteen men known as the 'Grey Scrubbers'.... On every day of the year from three hours before daybreak until about eleven o'clock, when the scaffolding and ladders became a hindrance to the cooks, the Grey Scrubbers fulfilled their hereditary calling.
Peake has been compared to Dickens, Tolkien, and Peacock, but Titus Groan is truly unique. Unforgettable characters with names like Steerpike and Prunesquallor make their way through an architecturally stifling world, with lots of dark corners around to dampen any whimsy that might arise. This true classic is a feast of words unlike anything else in the world of fantasy. Those who explore Gormenghast castle will be richly rewarded. --Therese Littleton

Amazing imagery and mood-setting text.......2007-06-12
No need to repeat the previous descriptions of the story/plot. Among the fascinating aspects of this book, is the repeated experience of finding yourself in the middle of the scenes. The descriptions and writing style are absolutely unique, and you find yourself remembering with great clarity some of the scenery and events. If you want action and quick moving events, stay away. But if you truly enjoy great literature and want a reading experience unlike anything else, then grab this book. It is truly a unique experience.
No, It's Just A Chore.......2006-09-19
Nothing more need be written. See, Peake! You can 'say' a lot with a little ...
A chore of Melvillistic proportions.......2006-06-16
Plot: The Groan Family has ruled the land of Gormenghast for over seventy generations. Gormenghast consists of an enormous castle, home to the Groan Family; the Mud Dwellers who live around the outside of the castle; wilderness. The story starts with the birth of a new Groan heir, Titus, and ends shortly after his first birthday is described. The royal family of Gormenghast, and all the inhabitants of the royal castle, adhere to rituals as if they were the food and oxygen upon which they are sustained, and almost everyone strives for a following of traditional that has become crystallized and has spawned a horror and abhorrence of change. But, an element of change has crept into their world of almost-rock-solid sameness, and that element is not named "Titus," as Titus is all set to be groomed as the Prime Maintainor of Tradition. The element of change is named Steerpike.
Steerpike is a very strange character, as he is both villain and hero. He is clever, ambitious, ruthless, and charming. He starts as a kitchen boy, and is destined to always be a kitchen servant. But, Steerpike is the Enemy of Destiny, as he refuses to accept the narrow path upon which he has been told to walk. While everyone else in Gormenghast strives to fulfill his or her rigid role to perfection, Steerpike steps off that path, takes cuts, trips people, charms people, manipulates everyone, and accomplishes two amazing things: he rises above his Station in Life; he breathes life into everyone, challenges them to try to out-think him, and creates that true horror called "Something New."
This book is extremely hard to classify into a genre. There are strong elements of fantasy, as Gormenghast was created in the mind of Mervyn Peake, but there is nothing magical, other-worldly (as in alien), or supernatural here. There are small, quiet, slothlike elements of creeping terror and suspense, but it is not a true horror novel. It is a high, slow, semi-farcical drama, playing out in an unreal land populated by unreal characters, who show elements of all-too-real flaws that we all know in small amounts.
Why do I mention Melville in my review title? Mervyn Peake's writing style actually stands alone, but I think it has some kinship with that of Herman Melville. "Titus Groan" is an incredibly detailed book, that can take pages to describe a scene that could be described in one-quarter of the words used. The pace can be arduously slow. And, tangents and side-stories abound. These factors could be the ingredients for a truly awful book, and Mr. Peake tip-toed along the edge of that, but he never stepped over the edge. While this book is an incredible chore to read, one other thing is equally true: Once you start, you feel compelled to keep going, no matter how challenging, and how daunting, that might be.
Actually, I think that the closest author to Mervyn Peake, in style and topic, is Gene Wolfe. "Titus Groan" and Mr. Wolfe's long, interconnected series ("The Book of the New Sun," "The Book of the Long Sun," "The Book of the Short Sun") share a love of detail, a penchant for tangents, complex characters, and nearly-poetic prose.
I have finished "Titus Groan" and will proceed to the next "Gormenghast" book, with a mixture of trepidation and eagerness. I expect to survive the ordeal, happy but not unscathed.
P.S.: Let yourself admire Steerpike, but trust him not!
Gormenghast trilogy - could it be read better by anyone else?.......2005-11-12
I began to fall for the wonders of the world of Titus and Gormenghast after reading Titus Groan. The complexity and intensity of the language at times feels more like poetry than prose. For more info on the trilogy itself read the editorial review at http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0879516283/103-7360864-2418208?v=glance&n=283155&v=glance. If you can imagine Dickens writing gothic fantasy with the linguistic range of a poet then you are close. After buying the Audiobook trilogy by Michael Williams I can't recommend it highly enough. His voice is as rich as the characters that he is required to give life to. By turns crackling, humorous, bitter, angry, pathetic, depressed, ludicrous: Michael Williams voice catches the many moods and characters of these world's inhabitants and manages to convey the spidery, rasping, cloistered, dark and gothic atmosphere. If Amazon don't have it ask them to stock it! Also don't be put off by what some people say about the third book the third book is a classic if only for the character of Muzzlehatch.
'There should be no rich, no poor, no strong, no weak,' ..........2005-03-01
.... said Steerpike, methodically pulling the legs off the stag beetle, one by one as he spoke. 'Equality is the great thing, equality is everything.'
Extravagant? Yes it is! But what a wonderful type of extravagance. This is a fantasy novel like no other. I first read this novel many, many years ago and shared it with some of my special friends. And then, when I got married, I so loved reading it to my wife. Since then I have seen the television series ('Gormenghast' - based on this novel and its sequel). Now I picked the book up again and it's as enthralling, fascinating, captivating as ever.
Many novels introduce us to one or two memorable characters and detail their interaction - the tensions and the bonding. But in 'Titus Groan' Mervyn Peake creates a whole galaxy of characters - all extravagant and extreme - and then constrains them in such a tight environment. You could compare Gormenghast to another isolated society; that described in W H Hudson's 'A Crystal Age', but these worlds are very different. The interactions are thus intensified. For all their extremeness I wondered if Gormenghast and the people living there were no more than an analogy of a family - a group of people that allows itself controlled intimacies that it does not offer to the wider world.
'Titus Groan' separates itself from that other great fantasy world of 'Lord of the Rings' by its constrained boundaries. This is not a travel story ranging across wide horizons. It is a travel story of the human mind. It has horror, it has madness, it has dedication, and above all it has the most extraordinary vision and humour. There are four great scenes not to be missed - the burning of the library, Titus's first Birthday, the battle between Flay and Swelter, and the earling.

THE PEAKE OF CREATIVITY.......2007-08-04
I have been reading some of the more negative reviews of these books and decided it was time to update my remarks. Let me put it this way: Gormenghast, (like the Magic Theater in Hesse's STEPPENWOLF) is NOT for everybody. It is, indeed, just as great as others (including myself) have said. But! If you're a big fan of action--you won't find that here. If your particular bane is a lot of descriptive passages---flee these books as you would the Bird Flu.
HOWEVER: If you're in the mood for a slower read that inundates you with the wonderful power of the English language---then these books are for YOU!!! In THAT sense, this trilogy is perfect. This is the way the Masters USED to do it. Peake uses English the way Virgil used Latin...in other words, he had the vocabulary DOWN, man, and he shows it and there are a lot of loverly sounding (and emotionally evocative) words that we rarely encounter in the works of more modern writers that are, nevertheless, part of our heritage...and you will find a great many of THOSE here.
But, as I say, it isn't for everybody. It's for madmen only.Titus Groan (Gormenghast Trilogy)
