Everything I Love!.......2002-07-18
I love stories with castles in them! Add magic to the castle, and I'm hooked. And the castle in Deb's story seemed like a real *character* to me - it even talked! The descriptions of Ireland were so well-done that I could almost smell the sea. STEW moved quickly, too, and as I was reading I had a difficult time trying to find a "good place" to stop. You know how sometimes you get to parts in a book where you know you can stop reading for a while and not feel too anxious about what happens next? Well, not so with STEW. The setting, characters, humor, plot, dialogue, *very* hot love scenes -- everything meshed so wonderfully! I also loved the "Deep South meets Ireland" theme. Bridget's southernisms mixed with Riley's Irish words . . . That was fun, refreshing, and different. Honestly, this book had everything I love. I can't wait for Deb's next one!
Not my cup of tea!.......2002-06-22
Although Mulligan Stew seemed the type genre that I usually enjoy, I found Deb Stover's hillbilly slang (such as "reckon" and "ya'll") quite annoying throughout the book. Imaging Bridgette's voice in that whiney, Tennessee twang just ruined the read for me. Overall it was a pretty good story line though.
Winner of the WordWeaving Award for Excellence.......2002-06-13
In Reedville, Tennessee, Bridget Colleen Mulligan mourns the accidental death of her grandmother. Bridget is stunned to learn the tiny trailer they shared has been foreclosed upon due to Granny's gambling debts. She is even more shocked to learn the man she married seven years ago, who disappeared seventy-two hours later, did not abandon her. Instead, his accidental death so quickly after their elopement deprived his family of knowledge of his young bride. Only her eventual divorce papers lead them to contact Bridget, and then, perhaps, only because she bore Culley's son. Desperation for family and new beginning leads Bridget to accept the invitation to her husband's family farm on the west coast of Ireland.
Culley's mother and sister truly Bridget and her son Jacob, but brother Riley disbelieves her tale. Culley had been engaged to a woman in the local village, and Riley did not believe his brother would marry another. Nevertheless, Bridget's straightforwardness and blatant honesty, not to mention her country cooking, eventually begin to work their magic on him. Then he finds her in the abandoned family castle, abandoned a hundred years ago due to a curse. Riley has heard the whispers of the castle since his brother died, though he never puzzled out why Culley believed he could end the curse. Riley believes the story of his brother's bride to a con until he realizes she can hear the whispers, too. And then there are the erotic dreams that lower his defenses and leave him vulnerable to the woman's spell.
Deb Stover writes with a stunning beauty and wry wit that resonates beautifully throughout all of her novels, but never so profoundly as with MULLIGAN STEW. Like the stew for which it is named, MULLIGAN STEW offers something for everyone's taste in this artful blend of Irish contemporary romance, an ancient curse, a haunted castle, gothic overtones and the struggle to reconcile the past with the present. Characters are vividly realized from the heroine who will kick another woman in the shins for hurting her child's feelings, to the hero who cannot forget the dead brother he loved so deeply. Stover creates a poignant tale of loss, healing and recreation that will linger long after the last page is turned. Yet another Stover novel to add your keeper shelf, MULLIGAN STEW earns the WordWeaving Award for Excellence.
exhilarating paranormal tale within a classic-style romance.......2002-06-08
When her grandmother dies leaving her in debt, Bridget Mulligan sees no hope for her son's well being until the letter arrives from Ireland. She learns that her husband Culley never abandoned her as she had thought for years, but actually died in a car accident. His mother and sister want her to come to Ireland to live with them though his older brother Riley thinks she is a gold digger.
Bridget and her son travel to Ireland where she feels the nearby ruined castle calling her. Though her female in-laws shower her with love, Riley treats her rather shabbily. Still even though he does not fully believe that Jacob is his nephew, he begins to act like an uncle towards the lad. Neither one wants it, but soon Riley and Bridget fall in love. However, chances of anything between them are improbable as both savor the memory of Culley and he remains doubtful about her motives. Finally there is the family curse.
Award winning Deb Stover provides her fans with an exhilarating paranormal romance within a classic-style romantic story line starring two souls who mistrust one another while falling in love. Riley remains obstinate a bit too long, but the audience will still cherish this hunk. Bridget is a strong female protagonist doing what needs to be done for the sake of her son. The support cast supplements the plot by providing depth to the personalities of the lead duet. With a strong cast, the key to MULLIGAN STEW is the ability of Ms. Stover to interweave her two subplots into one entertaining cohesive tale.

Mulligan Stew by Deb Stover.......2002-06-02
"Deb Stover just took flight on wings of magic and landed in Ireland in a pot of Mulligan Stew hot enough to singe your eyebrows off with her extraordinary characters that jump off the pages into your heart. This book has everything necessary to keep you flipping the pages because from the moment you meet Bridget and Riley you know there are other forces at work to bring them together to break the curse on the Black Castle that has stood vacant for l00 years. I highly recommend this book. Keep in mind it's quite sensual too."

Book Description
A Nuala Anne McGrail Novel by the bestselling author of Irish LoveNuala Anne McGrail, the enthralling heroine of Irish Love, returns, along with her devoted husband Dermot, to lend her second sight and irrepressible personality to another savory concoction made up of equal parts of love, humor, and intrigue. You'd think Nuala and Dermot would have enough to worry about, what with their brand-new baby daughter being born three months premature, but Nuala's fey gifts aren't about to go on maternity leave just because little Socra Marie needs more care and loving attention than the average newborn. Soon enough Nuala, and therefore Dermot, find themselves steered toward no less than two unresolved mysteries:Someone is trying to kill Seamus Costelloe, a bigshot lawyer from the South Side of Chicago. Nuala already sees the mark of death upon Seamus. Can she and Dermot somehow find a way to avert her fatal premonition?Equally compelling is the puzzle of Chicago's infamous Haymarket Riot, which may be even harder to solve-given that took place over a century ago!

A good waiting spot.......2003-06-08
I started in the middle of the series last summer-- enjoyed "Irish Mist," so much I scoured my hometown and the internet until I found and have now read the whole Nualla series (in order). "Irish Stew" is not the best of the series, but if you were hooked from the previous books, you'll enjoy this one too. The only thing is that this one lives a little too much in the past and you don't get a lot of Nualla and Dermot, but the way he leaves you hanging as you go from the present story of Dermot and Nualla to Ned from long ago Chicago (same Ned as Irish Eyes) you find yourself hooked. I just hope the good father has one more Nualla story up his sleeve to quench my addiction.
Not ashamed to admit I love this series..........2002-08-22
If you are going to read any of the "Nuala and Dermot" books, start with the first one and do them in order. If you hate the first, it's OK to quit. I like them all, but then I like nearly 90 percent of Fr. Greeley's output, and over the decades I've probably read about 90 percent of his total. I am only an eighth Irish, have only been to the airport in Chicago, and no longer consider myself Catholic, but I still am hooked. This group of novels are just plain fun. There are two mysteries, one from the past, one in the present, to solve, plus a progressive love story and cameo appearances by many of Greeley's stock characters in the Ryan-Kane-Murphy-Casey extended families. To enjoy these books, one has to suspend a lot of disbelief...Nuala Anne McGrail Coyne, our sexy, feisty, low self-esteem Irish peasant heroine, achieves a world class singing career rather too easily, for instance, and her husband, Dermot, may be too rich too easily, and too multi-talented to be credible. However, both are so darn likeable you won't give a flip about the unreality. If you like any of Greeley, I cannot imagine not liking this series. Each book has sex, humor, suspense, a bit of danger, a lot of history, an explication of how modern-day yuppies can still be practicing and sincere Catholics. the "Irish" series may not earn respect from the academic literati, but the plots are not dull, and the feeling when you are done is that all can be (mostly) right with the world if you do your part to play by the rules. For a celibate priest, Andy Greeley sure knows how to write about the healthy parts of lust and love and desire and the mysterious compulsion that brings men and women together despite their being different creatures altogether.
Good Read.......2002-03-26
I have read all the books in this series. The conversations between Dermot and his mental alter ego were very confusing at times. I would re-read paragraphs to make sure I was getting the speaker right. I enjoyed the history lesson though!
Sweet Home Chicago.......2002-03-15
In "Irish Stew," Father Andrew Greeley has again interwoven a compelling and interesting historical tale with the equally interesting modern day Coynes. This time the historical sleuthing involves Chicago's Haymarket Riot and the subsequent trial - which to this reader has many correlations to the later Police Riot at the 1968 Democratic National Convention and the subsequent trial of the "Chicago 7."
I suppose one could start with this novel - but why miss all the fun? Start with Irish Gold and follow the family's growth and adventures. Friends from other Greeley series also make cameo appearances, including "the little bishop" (Blackwood "Blackie" Ryan.) As herself would say: "`Tis a brilliant series altogether!" I do, though, have one wee complaint - the fonts on this edition - while very pretty - are hard to read, especially when switching to almost illegible italics to tell Ned's Haymarket tale. Go on with ya, Forge/ Tom Doherty Associates printers! Father Greeley and his readers deserve better!
fun to read paranormal historical mystery.......2002-03-01
Dermot Michael Coyne accompanies his wife Nuala Anne McGrail as she performs at the Celtic international music festival in Milan. While in Italy, Dermot and Nuala Anne meet fellow Chicago resident Seamus Costelloe and his family. After unceremoniously dumping Seamus into the pool for insulting his wife, Dermot and Nuala Anne agree to joining the Costelloe brood for dinner. Nuala Anne noticed the mark of death on Seamus, a blowhard with many enemies not all in organized crime.
Meanwhile the couples' daughter hears the explosion associated with the Windy City's Haymarket Riot. The only problem is that the incident occurred over a century ago. To provide solace to his daughter who believes that someone is crying for fairness through her, Dermot tries to uncover the truth over who really started the riot. Meanwhile Nuala Anne, perhaps being the only person to see any good in Seamus, tries to keep him alive as she believes that is why her Irish fey powers gave her the sign.
The latest Nuala Anne tale is a fun to read story because the two lead characters are a delight to watch in action even if she is a too perfect Irish goddess. The dual story lines require leaps of faith as the audience will struggle with why Nuala Anne feels obligated to protect Seamus and why Dermot believes he must solve the Haymarket Riot mystery. Still fans of Andrew M. Greeley's "Irish" series and those paranormal cozy readers who can forgive the chasm between the first and second dominos of the plot will dine on IRISH STEW.

Book Description
In A Modest Defence of Publick Stews (1724) its reputed author Dr. Bernard Mandeville argues that the best solution to the problems of prostitution (with its related evils of venereal disease, infanticide and other crimes) is not to stamp it out-an impossibility-but to legalize it and regulate it under strict government supervision. This proposal seems serious enough, but Mandeville's satire, with bawdy humor and passages of deliberately faulty reasoning, calls into question the seriousness of this somewhat utopian project. In this first annotated edition, the editor reveals that this complex work often relies upon ancient Classical and Renaissance authors (Plato, Ovid, Martial, Shakespeare, Ariosto, Milton, Butler and especially Montaigne) and that it merits reconsideration as a work richer in literary values and vitality than most readers had previously imagined. It also remains very pertinent to our ongoing debates on prostitution and sexuality in this era of HIV and AIDS.

Book Description
The sixth installment in the exciting Sembia series.
Continuing the overall theme of the Sembia series, Sands of the Soul details the interactions of characters debuted in the The Halls of Stormweather anthology. This series was specifically designed to be an accessible entry point for new readers to the Forgotten Realms universe. This particular title fleshes out an area that is familiar to Forgotten Realms fans but that has not been previously detailed.
The only legitimate daughter of the wealthy Uskevren family, Tazi has suffered blow after shattering blow to her body and her spirit, some at the hands of her most trusted allies.
Even as she struggles to mend her fractured soul, Tazi finds herself on a journey that will take her from the safety of Stormweather to the darkest alleys of Selgaunt and the shining heart of the Calim Desert. There, the ever-shifting sands hide an old foe who holds the key to Tazi’s salvation--or her doom.

Mediocre.......2007-05-17
"Sands of the Soul" is the penultimate novel in the Sembia series, and it focuses on Thazienne Uskreven, the daughter.
This book starts strong, and has a very interesting and deeply magical plot, which is slowly revealed through the novel. It is a standard fantasy plot, but the author raises it well above the average. Next, the descriptions and writing are rich and smooth, giving you some interesting insight into the land of Calimshan and its deserts. The characters are OK, with Steorf, young Thazienne's consort of sorts, sticking out as a really interesting character. After reading the short story in the The Halls of Stormweather (Gateway to Sembia) anthology, I was a bit annoyed with Tazi's spoiled behavior. You won't see any of that in this book, though. This book also contains some very good scenes, almost cinematic in their vivacity.
But, this novel also features some very, very annoying clichés. First, all of the characters have a habit of talking to themselves. Those are not simple swears or short reassurances that we all do, but at times turn into two-page long monologues?! Besides that, there are a lot of washed-out taunts in combat, and some small, but annoying logical errors. I almost forgot to mention, villains are gloating a lot, a cliché that became almost unavoidable in similar novels.
There is a certain spin-off from this book, and it's called The Crimson Gold (Forgotten Realms: The Rogues, Book 3). You don't want to read that, though. A terrible, terrible book. A novel without a reason, really.
All in all, it's far from being a bad book, really, but one just can't look past those monologues. Really spoiled the book for me.
Check it out, anyway.
OVERALL SCORE: (C-).......2004-03-17
Slow, boring, predictable, and the hero is silly and self-absorbed. Also the dialogue is dull and shallow. But, besides that........
{Try, Paul S. Kemp's "Shadow's Witness" (Forgotten Realms: Sembia series, Book 2)" or "Twilight Falling" (Forgotten Realms: The Erevis Cale Trilogy, Book 1) these are really good books!}

Another good one in the Sembia series.......2003-04-19
I have to agree with the majority that have posted here when I saw I really liked the book. Sort of funny to read the review before mine, though. I always laugh when people have some critisim of another's work when they can't even bother to check their own spelling. :)
Tazi gets herself back together, but...spoiler...I sort of wonder what's going to happen to her as she loses those closest to her. Should be an interesting journey for her.
Eagerly waiting for Tazi's next story!
Not bad.......2003-04-10
This book had some real potential, but it sort of de-railed along the way. While it has a great start and a killer villain. However, once Tazi leaves Sembia the story goes from great to mediocre. A once greatly malicious villain turns into your average nasty schmoe and the novle just degenerates into a standard hack and slash unbtil you get to the end of the story type book.
While not bad, this is definately the low point in the Sembian series, which means it is still good, just not as good as the rest of them.
Tazi Rocks!.......2003-03-01
I've gotta agree with the other review that this book isn't as gory as some of the other FR books, but it was thrilling anyway!
Tazi finally has herself back together and everybody better watch out.
I was glad that most of the family wasn't in the story very much because it would have been hard for her to do what she had to without all of them trying to lend a hand. And this was something Tazi had to do alone.
While I didn't get everything I wanted out of the ending, Ms. Whitney-Robinson didn't cop out with a Hollywood one.
Definitely want more of her!

Reviewed by Paige Lovitt for Reader Views (8/06)
I had the pleasure of reading "Sand Play for the Soul" while I was camping in Flagstaff. Flagstaff is nearby Sedona, where the book was created and where Paula Petrovic does her Sand Play sessions. Her writings really touched me on a deep level. It made it feel more special to know that I was nearby where this incredible work takes place.
My initial thought about reading the book was based on my ego. I felt that it would enhance my counseling background to read about a different form of communication. I was familiar with play therapy, but Sand Play goes so much deeper than that. My heart knew that I needed to read this book for myself and for the work that I needed to do on healing and connecting with my soul.
Through Sand Play, you use a tray filled with sand and small objects to make this connection. How you place meanings on these objects and where you place them in your tray gives you answers that you need to understand yourself and to see where you need to heal. You communicate with your soul, and allow it to tell you what work needs to be done. Petrovic says, "There is nothing you cannot accomplish when you and your
soul are in league as `One.'"
The purpose of the sand tray and objects is to provide a three dimensional means in which to have this communication. She believes, "releasing set beliefs and habitual patterns which often hold us captive and causes mental, emotional, and physical suffering is no easy feat." However, being able to see your life story symbolically laid out before you helps you to put things into perspective and to be able to respond with clarity. What I really like about this form of communication is that it is something that you can do on your own and continue to benefit from over time.
Sand Play helps you to discover what is right and true for you coming from, "the knowing place within your soul." You can open communication up with your soul in a way that is "supportive, empowering and respectful." Sand Play is meant to be enjoyable and enriching. I would love to attend one of Petrovic's workshops, but for now I can practice this on my own.
In addition to providing a wealth of information about how and why Sand Play works, Petrovic also has a large section in the book called, "Sand Play Stories." In this section she writes about the healing experiences of her clients. The people whose stories are told come from a variety of ages and backgrounds. Each story will touch your heart in a different way. The healing experiences that these people encounter are incredible. I recommend this book to readers that are looking for a deeper means to connect with their souls and who are seeking answers that really can only be found within themselves. I also recommend "Sand Play for the Soul" to counselors who would like to teach their clients to engage in self-discovery.

Book Description
This study describes the forces and pressures that encouraged or impeded Australians' enjoyment of sand and surf, from early enjoyment of bathing, through nearly a century of repressive restrictions, to freedom won in the face of drawn-out opposition. These provocative arguments will stimulate debate on the concept of national identity appropriate for a new Australian century and promote a deeper understanding of an aspect of life in Australia that is cherished by many who live there.
