Book Description
"Begley writes with a contemplative wisdom that permeates his work....[He] has captured some of the wispy melancholy of midcentury fiction, and this feat in itself is mellifluous to both ear and spirit."
THE BOSTON GLOBE
A man without a country or family, a Holocaust survivor, Ben long ago left the wreckage of Europe and recreated himself as a brilliant financier. He rejects the comforts of love and is shocked to discover Veronique--beautiful, unwisely married, and all that Ben suddenly knows he has always needed. In their stolen hours and weekends, their deep commitment to one another fills their lives as nothing ever has. But the question remains: Can Ben finally take what he has always denied himself...?
From the author of WARTIME LIES.
Customer Reviews:
Good writing, no story.......2002-01-29
Although this book is about Ben, his story is told by his college friend, Jack. Why? I have no idea. Jack's life is orderly and traditional. Ben, a ..survivor, finds love and rejects it. Jack knows all through reading Ben's journal and because Ben tells him all at their occasional lunches.
I just didn't get this book. I've read three others by Begley. All were excellent, told believable stories, had interesting characters and satisfying conclusions. I finished this one only because I started it.
Also, there is way too much male fantasy [stuff]. How many scenes of anonymous or paid for intercourse must a reader witness to get the point? And I am certainly tired of "beautiful" but problematic women and the repetitive descriptions of ..[them]. Enough already!
Many sharp details do not a novel make. If you want to sample Begley, read "About Schmidt."
This is an extraordinary book.......1998-12-18
In prose beautiful for its sheer economy as well as its clarity, here is the story of the genteel life adopted by a survivor of the least genteel event of the century. There are hidden costs associated with the comforts of Ben's chosen path, not least of which is his self-image, as a man who is perpetually late to realize the existential significance of major choices, and late to act thereupon; a man who misses chances; a man out of sync with his own life.
This is simply an extraordinary story, told with a courtliness and understatement evocative of William Maxwell and Ford Madox Ford, from the author of About Schmidt, Schmidt Delivered, Shipwreck, Mistler's Exit, Wartime Lies, and As Max Saw It.

Book Description
This look at people's most common habits and their meanings argues that unconscious behavior is often the physical manifestation of an emotional state of mind. Habits that seem to ease tension in the short term—such as nailbiting, and cigarette smoking—may actually be detrimental to a person's health or relationships, and understanding the issues behind such familiar habits is the first step toward changing these behaviors. A catalog of 70 common habits includes relevant case studies and concrete ways that have worked to overcome each specific negative behavior pattern.

understanding our habits.......2007-07-27
a great book for gaining insight into our habits and working with them. it's one of the more enlightening books i've read in this genre. thank you ann!
Insightful and well written.......2007-04-16
This was the first book I have read that explained the forming of habits. I found it insightful and well written. I thoroughly enjoyed the case histories. This book is going to set a lot of people free and help them to become whole. Ann Gadd has done a great task in recording and discussing habits and their debilitating power. She must be a remarkable soul to be so insightful.

Book Description
Only a miracle can save them now.
Luckily, they have one: the Marines.
Like an invincible tidal wave of evil, the Dark Prince’s conquering armies roar across the land, leaving death and destruction in their wake. So far Marines Haft and Spinner have managed to stay one step ahead of the invaders, picking up hundreds of refugees and soldiers as they struggle to reach their salvation at the edge of the sea. Against all odds, they’ve even managed to inflict some damage on the vastly superior forces.
Yet for every enemy soldier killed, ten more appear in his place, and the Dark Prince’s demon magic ensures their weapons are brutally effective. The outlook is not promising for the ragged band of rebels, pursued by bloodthirsty troops, hounded by bandits, and forced across a desert where death awaits all trespassers. As the noose tightens and the Dark Prince prepares the final coup de grace, it may look like Haft and Spinner and their embattled crew are finished. But these Marines have only just begun to fight.

Bring back this sereis.......2006-12-05
I love this series. I bought all three books at once and read them all in one sitting, only stopping long enough to take bathroom breaks. I am most interested in finding out more about the demons. They don't really seem to be bound to help unless they like you or they think helping you might be fun.
Buy This Book Now ( and buy the rest of the series too).......2006-08-30
This is a great quick read series of books. The characters are well developed and you root for them throughout. Unfortunately the series has been cancelled by the Del Rey publishing firm. Every fan of the Starfist series should give this series a try and hopefully if enough buy all three, as I did, the series will resume. Fans of SciFi/Fantasy military epics will thoroughly enjoy Sherman's work. I long for the day to read more of the adventures of Haft and Spinner, two marines who prove that great training and tradition can turn ordinary men into heros.
The Entourage Continues to Grow.......2006-08-09
Spinner and Haft are still one the run from the invaders and still looking for a safe pot in which they can seek passage back to their home islands but that goal is looking more and more remote because their entourage keeps growing. Refugees keep joining their caravan and the occasional fighting man shows up from time to time as well. That's a good thing because they need all the fighters they can get with the bad guys in pursuit.
Having a couple of marine privates become feudal lords is not without its difficulties. This is especially true when their sergeant, long presumed dead, turns up. He naturally feels that the privates are still "his men" (they are) but the 7000+ camp followers and men at arms have other ideas on the matter..
The series seems no closer to reaching a resolution than after the last book but it is still a series of interest.
Great Series - to bad this is it........2006-07-04
I have read all three and have been wating for the 4th, no I find out that the series has been halted do to lack of sale. The series is a good mixture between battles and human nature with a touch of fantasy mixed in. You get to know the main characters and they stay true throughout the series.
Lets get more of these books!!!!!!.......2006-05-13
I know many of you know that David Shermans Publishers made a very stupid choice by not publising any more Demontech books. I think this series was AWESOME!! We need to do whatever we can to get more of this series. If you are just thinking of getting this book I say. DO IT!!!!!
Book Description
It was the catch of a lifetime. In late January 1998, after a miserable stretch of fishing that hadn't paid for even their groceries, the five-man crew of a seventy-nine-year-old Alaska schooner called the La Conte risked one last run to the Fairweather Grounds, despite the approach of bad weather. The young skipper, a father-to-be, was convinced fish could be found on the shoals, and his instincts were right: they hit the mother lode. For eighteen hours their lines had a fish on every hook: yellow eye, lingcod, calico, halibut, even the occasional sand shark; it was an incredible haul, one that would bring huge profits -- and respect -- back in port.
But they stayed out too long, and a hurricane-force Arctic storm caught them. Though in need of repair herself, the La Conte had weathered bad seas before -- and might have again. But in the cruelest of ironies, the additional burden of its magnificent catch sank the ship, and set the five men -- Bob Doyle, Mike DeCapua, Gig Mork, David Hanlon, and Mark Morley -- afloat in frigid seventy-foot seas. Their radio beacon was sending distress signals to the Coast Guard, but the chances of rescue under such conditions seemed remote.
Eight months later, on a deserted island nearly 800 miles away, two boys found a mutilated corpse that had washed ashore and been mauled by brown bears. A forensics investigator, haunted by the thought that this man's family might never know what had become of him, and with only a single partial fingerprint and scraps of a survival suit for clues, set out to identify the body.
Author Todd Lewan's painstaking investigation into these events began here, too, with the discovery that the man found dead on Shuyak Island had been one of the fishermen aboard the La Conte. Lewan became obsessed with learning what had become of the other crewmen; with understanding how five "end of the roaders" from different parts of the United States had come together in Alaska to fish one of the world's most treacherous patches of ocean in the dead of winter; and with conveying the way in which that "dream catch" represented an opportunity for each of the men to significantly alter his life. In the process he learned of the truly heroic efforts undertaken by no fewer than three different teams of Coast Guard helicopter rescue units to save these desperate men.
Lewan's re-creation of the events themselves -- the discovery of a lost fisherman's remains; the bonding of troubled men on the high seas; the horrifying hours spent fighting to keep from freezing to death in thirty-eight-degree water; the impossibly courageous efforts of the helicopter rescue crews; and the moving account of how one of the survivors, in particular, found during this tempest an unexpected inner strength that allowed him to turn his life around -- makes for an unforgettable tale, a page-turning narrative drama of the first order. It also provides a timeless, affecting portrait of hard-living seekers drawn to Alaska: of adventurers in search of roots, home, and the chance to remake themselves in the spirit of America's last frontier.
Customer Reviews:
An Excellent True Story of Coast Guard Search & Rescue.......2007-03-09
I highly recommend this book! It is a well documented story of U.S. Coast Guard Search and Rescue in freezing weather and during a major hurricane in Alaskan Waters. The Coast Guard Search and Rescue personnel are often the unsung heros in today's world. Yet they truly do risk life and limb in the rescues they do. I also know this from my experience in assisting them at times on cases. Many people owe their lives to these dedicated people. Additionally, this book emphasizes the importance of having a proper respect of nature and the ocean.
Great read.......2006-03-19
This is an action-packed page turner ala Blackhawk Down. The first 20 pages pique your interest, the next 100 or so are a tad slow but develop the characters, while the last third is hard to put down. The story is this: some unlucky Alaskan commercial fishermen finally have fish jumping in their boat only to go in the drink during a huge storm. The first two Coast Guard helo's can't effect the rescue but the last finally does, too late for two of the crew. The point of view is from both the men in the water trying to stay alive and the Coasties who are trying to save them.
One of the best books I've read.......2006-01-09
I read this book and could not put it down. Todd Lewan took this story of a rag tag group of fisherman and the dedicated Coast Guard search and rescue crews to a heart pounding conclusion. I spent 30 years flying in Coast Guard aircraft as a helicopter hoist operator and rescue swimmer. I retired in 1996, but Todd Lewan's writing brought me out of retirement and back in the action. Reading the book actually gave me goose bumps. I knew most of the Coasties that he wrote about and he made each and every one of them come to life on the pages with stories that gave insight into their personal lives as well as professional lives.
Thanks for taking me back into the action, Todd. Bravo Zulu!

Redemption, Bravery, and Tragedy in the Worst Possible Conditions.......2005-12-12
Hurricane force storms occur in the Gulf of Alaska in the winter time. Nothing can sound more ferocious, more frightening, and more foreboding than being in the midst of a hurricane, out in the middle of ocean, in the dead of night, in the freezing waters of Alaska. Yet this is where several fishermen were when they're aging ship sunk from underneath of them, and they had to fight it out to stay alive until rescue could arrive. If you ever want to find undying appreciation and awe for Coast Guard rescue helicopter crews, this is the book.
Although this book covers the same topic as others like "The Perfect Storm" it is told in a significantly different way. This book focuses far more on the human element of the fishermen and what they went through. (Perhaps because some of them survived this time around and were there to relate their stories.) Actually, somewhat ironically because of this, the book starts off a little bit slow with a very exhaustive introduction to several of the fishermen. It, frankly, doesn't paint a very good picture of them. The two the book seems most about include a Coast Guard washout, who drank himself out of his career and his family, and a semi-career criminal drug addict womanizer. It's actually hard to be sympathetic with these guys and the amount of time spent on them gives the book a very gritty edge that at a few times made me want to put it down because I was losing interest in the main characters.
I'm glad I didn't put it down though. The trial the fishermen found themselves in and its resolution set the stage for redemption (in the act of the moment if not in the entire course of their lives), extreme bravery, and complete tragedy. Despite the varying degree of troubled pasts and less than honorable characters of some of the fishermen (the Captain of the boat and two of the non main character fishermen come off more favorable) they all band together and help each other to survive, devoting themselves to the group in a wholly unselfish and admirable manner. Their efforts to keep each other alive are stirring and memorable.
The Coast Guard efforts to rescue them are beyond amazing. No less than three rescue attempts by helicopters, flying into pitch black, hurricane force storms, must be made. In several of the rescues the waves grow so high that they actually raise higher than the hover height of the helicpoter, and the survivors find themselves in the precarious situation of looking DOWN on the helicopter that's trying to save them. Fighting nearly impossible odds rescue attempt after rescue attempt fails, with the helicopters not being able to hold position to drop a basket (not to mention the fear of the basket being lifted on a wave and the cable wrapping around a survivor, such that the trough of the wave would pull the cable taut again and slice the ensnared person in half), and not having enough fuel to stay on station in hundred knot crosswinds at the very limit of their range from base. Despite this some of the fishermen hold on for survival, watching helo after helo seemingly abandon them until one -the last available to fly- finally makes contact, where salvation is delivered while at the same time an ultimate tragedy (you'll have to read the book) occurs.
It's not quite as gripping during the first half as some other books in the genre so it only receives four stars instead of five, but still whole heartedly recommended. If you find yourself bored or put off in the first half just keep reading because it's worth it.
Extreme Tension.......2005-11-28
The pace of the book is tremendous. The description of the rescue (about 60% of the book) was filled with tension. The chapters are broken into shorter segments, many ending with a shocking cliff-hanger that only encourages the reader to continue on. As the author states up front, the dialogue is reproduced as accurately as possible (he lists source material) resulting in a fascinating read.
