      5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-08-04

One way I decide how good a book is, is if I look forward to picking it up every evening until it is finished. The other is if I find myself thinking about the book after I am done. With this book both are true. It was easy to read and follow but kept my interest. I can't wait for the next book in the series.

      4 out of 5 stars Great fun!.......2007-08-01

Of course you know that this is in a similar vein as Harry Potter. But there are also elements that bring to mind the Wizard of Oz, Robert Heinlein, and a certain British sitcom. And of course kids will enjoy the adventure and goofy characters.

5 out of 5 stars CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE!.......2007-07-16

Thoroughly enjoyed reading the first in this new series by new authors, Lou and Lane Lambert. The appeal of the light-hearted tale is multi-generational. Take a copy on a family vacation where everyone can take turns reading it. Clever and amusing with just the right amount of tongue-in-cheek humor. Kudos and best wishes to the Lamberts!

5 out of 5 stars Great Read, Don't Miss! *****.......2007-06-29

I thought Adventures in the Vortex might be uneven for the simple fact that there are co-authors, which is highly unusual for a fantasy fiction series. I could not find where one author stopped and the other started. Indeed, the writing was extremely tight and well done. This book was apparently written for young readers, but I found it to be totally enjoyable on an adult reader level. The writing style is original in that it is layered for all readers, (I think you'd need to have a PHD in English Lit to understand how the authors did that).
The book itself is about a couple of Midwestern American kids, Sara and Tyler, who are thrust together with a strange young man that goes by the name of Dragonslime. The chapter where they meet is quite hilarious. Dragonslime proclaims that he is "some sort" of a wizard and then accidentally burns down the barn on the family farm. Dragonslime is "some sort" of wizard, just not a very good one, but he tries hard, albeit irritatingly. To make amends for his actions he tries to surprise the kids by astrally projecting them to Disney World. Not a surprise that it doesn't work, but that is where the real fun begins! Sara, Tyler, and Dragonslime find themselves in a place called the Vortex. The Vortex is the center and the gateway to the universe, sort of a crossroads of time and space, where all things relate and exist together. The Vortex is a complicated mesh of mythology and reality where all things are possible. The basis of the story is quite a simple and common one where the goal is for the kids to find their way home. To that end they use an old Ford Pinto ("finest car ever made"), outcast wizard, rock devouring prospector, dangerous African warrior princess, dinosaurs, and a talking rat that goes by the name of Basil (Fawlty Towers, anyone). Don't be deceived by the silliness and the 1001 references to other books, movies, and shows as the book has great character development, humor and action. The kids gain mental toughness, physical endurance, and magical power as they survive the experiences of the Vortex and through their survival they prepare for the final battle against the evil wizard Noxin and his henchman Rogue. All the introduced characters end up seeming natural and well defined, but definitely not what we would consider natural in the traditional way before reading the book.
One of the authors is Lane Lambert. She is better known for her musical abilities, but I think it is only a matter of time before she is better known as an author.
I would highly recommend this book for ANY age. If you have a young one that isn't quite ready to read yet then read it to them. It will be quite a motivator for their reading skills. I cannot very well express the pleasure this book gave me, but I assure you that I had a great time in the Vortex and really feel like I have been there! I was sad to reach the end of the book, because I wanted to keep reading. As Adventures in the Vortex is the first book of a series we will all look with great anticipation for the subsequent books. Heck, I can't even wait for the books to be made into movies.

                    5 out of 5 stars Spiffy Story.......2002-02-14

I liked this book because it is a good story of a girl who visits her neighbor who is old and lonely. This lady (Miss Maggie) tells a story to the little girl who visits her (Ellie) about a doll that she had when she was a girl. For her Eighth Birthday she got a doll with big blue eyes. She laid her doll on the hallway table. Then when they heard a crash. It was the doll. Her Birthday was coming up and they bought a present for her. What happened to the doll? To find out what happens next read this book.

5 out of 5 stars I cry every time I read this darn book..........2000-04-28

Call me sentimental, but there's something to this story that tugs at your heart strings every time you read it. And I've read this at least a dozen times.

The story tells of the relationship between Ellie and her sitter Miss Maggie and of the very special birthday gift that Ellie gets for Maggie out of "pure love."

The illustrations are quite beautiful and complement the story very well. A tender story creates a tender heart. This is the best book in the Chicken Soup for Little Souls' series.

                    Book Description

The sixth installment in the exciting Sembia series.

Continuing the overall theme of the Sembia series, Sands of the Soul details the interactions of characters debuted in the The Halls of Stormweather anthology. This series was specifically designed to be an accessible entry point for new readers to the Forgotten Realms universe. This particular title fleshes out an area that is familiar to Forgotten Realms fans but that has not been previously detailed.

The only legitimate daughter of the wealthy Uskevren family, Tazi has suffered blow after shattering blow to her body and her spirit, some at the hands of her most trusted allies.

Even as she struggles to mend her fractured soul, Tazi finds herself on a journey that will take her from the safety of Stormweather to the darkest alleys of Selgaunt and the shining heart of the Calim Desert. There, the ever-shifting sands hide an old foe who holds the key to Tazi’s salvation--or her doom.

                    3 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2007-05-17

"Sands of the Soul" is the penultimate novel in the Sembia series, and it focuses on Thazienne Uskreven, the daughter.

This book starts strong, and has a very interesting and deeply magical plot, which is slowly revealed through the novel. It is a standard fantasy plot, but the author raises it well above the average. Next, the descriptions and writing are rich and smooth, giving you some interesting insight into the land of Calimshan and its deserts. The characters are OK, with Steorf, young Thazienne's consort of sorts, sticking out as a really interesting character. After reading the short story in the The Halls of Stormweather (Gateway to Sembia) anthology, I was a bit annoyed with Tazi's spoiled behavior. You won't see any of that in this book, though. This book also contains some very good scenes, almost cinematic in their vivacity.

But, this novel also features some very, very annoying clichés. First, all of the characters have a habit of talking to themselves. Those are not simple swears or short reassurances that we all do, but at times turn into two-page long monologues?! Besides that, there are a lot of washed-out taunts in combat, and some small, but annoying logical errors. I almost forgot to mention, villains are gloating a lot, a cliché that became almost unavoidable in similar novels.

There is a certain spin-off from this book, and it's called The Crimson Gold (Forgotten Realms: The Rogues, Book 3). You don't want to read that, though. A terrible, terrible book. A novel without a reason, really.

All in all, it's far from being a bad book, really, but one just can't look past those monologues. Really spoiled the book for me.

                    Check it out, anyway.

Slow, boring, predictable, and the hero is silly and self-absorbed. Also the dialogue is dull and shallow. But, besides that........

5 out of 5 stars Another good one in the Sembia series.......2003-04-19

I have to agree with the majority that have posted here when I saw I really liked the book. Sort of funny to read the review before mine, though. I always laugh when people have some critisim of another's work when they can't even bother to check their own spelling. :)

Tazi gets herself back together, but...spoiler...I sort of wonder what's going to happen to her as she loses those closest to her. Should be an interesting journey for her.

Eagerly waiting for Tazi's next story!

                    3 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2003-04-10

This book had some real potential, but it sort of de-railed along the way. While it has a great start and a killer villain. However, once Tazi leaves Sembia the story goes from great to mediocre. A once greatly malicious villain turns into your average nasty schmoe and the novle just degenerates into a standard hack and slash unbtil you get to the end of the story type book.

While not bad, this is definately the low point in the Sembian series, which means it is still good, just not as good as the rest of them.

                    5 out of 5 stars Tazi Rocks!.......2003-03-01

I've gotta agree with the other review that this book isn't as gory as some of the other FR books, but it was thrilling anyway!

Tazi finally has herself back together and everybody better watch out.

I was glad that most of the family wasn't in the story very much because it would have been hard for her to do what she had to without all of them trying to lend a hand. And this was something Tazi had to do alone.

While I didn't get everything I wanted out of the ending, Ms. Whitney-Robinson didn't cop out with a Hollywood one.

                    Definitely want more of her!

                    Book Description

Andrea Varney spent her childhood in cemeteries, finding a certain peace in the quiet cities of the dead. As the first whispers of the dead fill her ears, Andrea learns of a mission she must fulfill: to remember the dead who have lost their hold in the memories of the living. The world depends on it. Darren Jacobs feels something peculiar when Ms. Varney shakes his hand. Saying nothing, he looks at his fingers and wonders about the way she keeps looking at him. Drawn by a sparkling cloud of energy to a decrepit headstone, Darren feels the presence of the person below his feet and for a brief moment, knows everything about everyone buried in this hidden cemetery. Together, Andrea and Darren embark on an unthinkable journey to remember the dead. What they are doing has a higher purpose. Their simple plan is quickly changed, because something is determined to stop them. When the earth cracks and the first clawed hand reaches for the surface, they have to hurry.

Originally from Auburn, Maine, T. G. Arsenault currently resides in California with his wife, Diana, and son, Christopher.

5 out of 5 stars excellent horror tale.......2005-12-07

It saw the Neanderthals die out, watch the rise and fall of Ancient Rome and Egypt, looked upon the visages of Jesus and Mohammad; all the time hating humanity and looking for ways to destroy it. It was responsible for the Black Plague that devastated Europe and is getting ready once again to wreak havoc on humans that reside in the world above it. His realm is one of terror and horror for those who didn't worship him were shackled and set on fire for eternity.

Andrea Varney knows that eventually she will have to fight it but she must wait until the Chosen One comes. When he does she realizes Darren Jacobs must grow up before the two undertake their journey to different cemeteries around Maine releasing the souls that the living have forgotten about and who are one prisoners in it's world. Through the aide of an elderly woman who died and gathered souls ready to help Darren and Andre fight it and it's creations, humanity makes a last stand against an entity that is more powerful and cunning than anyone could imagine.

Through touching headstones of the dead, Andrea releases the spirits so they can enter a higher realm while Darren saves them through the automatic writing of the dead souls whose stories are told to release them from the bondage of it. T.G. Arsenault writes this delightfully frightening tale with the flavor of a Stephen King, the atmosphere of a Dean Koontz and the terrorizing plot of a Bentley Little. It is a safe prediction that Mr. Arsenault will be the new star in the horror galaxy.

If you order this book be aware that it is a 2 volume set. The $99.95 includes both volumes. One of the other sellers under Used and New is trying to sell you One volume (half the book) for an inflated price. You can also buy this book from the publisher and you will get both volumes for the $99.95 price that is advertised. The book is great if you grew up in Florida and were attending all the dances locally. It has great info on the bands that put out records and who went on to stardom nationally. A lot of hard work went into this book since I know some of the local Tampa and Jacksonville bands and some of the people that became national successes.

This is an excellent addition to the Elminster's Ecologies boxed set. It continues the format that made EE so great, and adds more flavor to the Realms by providing adventuring hooks and great analysis of the areas. Make this part of your gaming accessories, but really only if you've EE already.

                      Book Description

Latin America has often been condemned to failure. Neither poor enough to evoke Africa’s moral crusade, nor as explosively booming as India and China, it has largely been overlooked by the West. Yet this vast continent, home to half a billion people, the world’s largest reserves of arable land, and 8.5 percent of global oil, is busily transforming its political and economic landscape.

This book argues that rather than failing the test, Latin America’s efforts to build fairer and more prosperous societies make it one of the world’s most vigorous laboratories for capitalist democracy. In many countries—including Brazil, Chile and Mexico—democratic leaders are laying the foundations for faster economic growth and more inclusive politics, as well as tackling deep-rooted problems of poverty, inequality, and social injustice. They face a new challenge from Hugo Chávez’s oil-fuelled populism, and much is at stake. Failure will increase the flow of drugs and illegal immigrants to the United States and Europe, jeopardize stability in a region rich in oil and other strategic commodities, and threaten some of the world's most majestic natural environments.

Drawing on Michael Reid’s many years of reporting from inside Latin America’s cities, presidential palaces, and shantytowns, the book provides a vivid, immediate, and informed account of a dynamic continent and its struggle to compete in a globalized world.

Of Inca descent, the author describes his childhood in the Amazon jungle and his yearning to come to the United States. Through adversity, with tenacity, the young Peruvian immigrant becomes a doctor of medicine. He lives the American way of life, but his past haunts him.

                          5 out of 5 stars Heart & Soul series - book 10.......2007-03-11

Finding a futuristic romance at a store is very difficult; finding a good one is even harder! Thanks to e-publishing it's becoming easier to find good futuristics. Ms. Verdenius is one of the greats (imho!) I thought it was the most emotionally moving story. When she realizes all of her years in prison were not for the reasons she thought, the writing makes one almost feel what the character feels. I am the proud owner of the entire series so far and am looking forward to books 12 and 13 coming out this year.
