Book Description

It seems now like a different me, the years I spent with Martin, a Doberman dog, and before he came, another me; and it is a new me now, once again, writing this. I would have been dead long ago had I continued to live the way I had before he came.

I think someone would have murdered me, given how I drank and the dives that I drank in and that I was an aggressive, angry man. I had no money and no friends. I didn’t care, I couldn’t have.
Thomas Healy was a drunk, a fighter, sometimes a writer, often unemployed, no stranger to the police. His life was going nowhere but downhill. Then one day he bought a pup—a Doberman. He called him Martin. Gradually man and dog became unshakable allies, the closest of comrades, the best of friends. They took long walks together, they vacationed together, they even went to church together.
Martin, in more ways than one, saved Thomas Healy’s life.
Written with unadulterated candor and profound love, this soulful memoir gets at the heart of the intense bond between people and dogs.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring book you will never forget........2007-07-10

I am a big fan of autobiographies and Thomas tells his story like no other. Thomas shares his intimate feelings and how he overcame his downward descent with the help of a puppy. Anyone who has been down and out knows that sometimes you need something to grab as your life preserver, for Thomas it was his puppy Martin. Anyone who deals with alcoholism, wether in their own family or within themselves, will benefit from reading this story of triumph and overcoming the clutches of alcohol and how it effects us and everyone around us. An inspiring read you will not soon forget.

5 out of 5 stars Dogs, faith, and love.......2007-03-31

I finished this book last night and was sorry to have it end. I had really enjoyed looking forward to picking up where I had left off the previous reading. This story was well written because it was from the heart. An honest look at oneself by a man who was redeemed and given a second chance by his love for a dog. His deepening faith over a long period of time, as a Roman Catholic, was beautifully depicted, as was his love for his mother and his wonderfully supportive sister, Mary. I would recommend this book for anyone who loves dogs; has an addiction; or wants to read an inspiring story of increased faith by a very beautiful author. Hope you keep writing more for us!

4 out of 5 stars This book is about the author.......2007-02-20

This is a very interesting autobiographical book about the author at a crucial decade in his life journey. It's a period of life that he shares with a dog, which why I bought the book and read it. It was very enjoyable to read and I'm always happy to see it on the shelf at the bookstore because I know others will buy and read it as well. This self-taught author is a remarkable person.

5 out of 5 stars Great, great book!.......2007-02-08

I can't remember the last time I was this moved by a book. This is a great book for anyone who has ever loved and lost someone, whether human or dog. I would like to thank the author for sharing his story and inspiring others.

4 out of 5 stars More of a Person Book than Dog Book.......2006-12-11

A great story of how a dog can be a positive force in one's life. I was a little disappointed that the book focused more on the result of the positive force, than on the dog himself. But that's because I like dog books...

Book Description

Communicating is a contact sport! The ability to communicate is the single most important skill determining your success. But to really communicate, powerfully and persuasively, you have to reach your listener on an emotional level -- to be heard, you must first be believed by your listener. To do that, you have to make contact with that elememtal part of the brain that responds to feeling, emotion, openness and enthusiasm -- the part of our mind that Bert Decker calls the First Brain. This tape puts the enormous power of the First Brain at your command, with anecdotes, examples and specific how-to exercises drawn from over two decades of work with America's most powerful communicators. This is a ground-breaking program that will help you communicate more effectively in every aspect of your personal and professional life -- and will help you overcome any anxiety you may have toward speaking under pressure to an audience of ten, or ten thousand.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Still the Best on the Topic of Speaking.......2007-10-02

If you read one book on speaking and presenting, this is still the one. I've read it five or six times and I'm still incorporating Bert's ideas into what I do. The basic science he describes also applies beyond speaking to one-on-one interaction, so it's on my recommended list of the nine best sales books of all time.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best !.......2007-04-11

This is one of the best communication texts written ... I use it as a text for forensic accounting [adult professionals]

5 out of 5 stars One book we all need to read and use.......2007-02-23

This is a classic. Well written, clear and full of very useful tips that you can put into effect today. Lesson learned. The words you use only convey 7% of your message., yet we sweat bullets over the words, neglecting how we deliver it. If you have to communicate in your life, you need this book. I found it in bargain bin, but its a treasure. He has had over 35 yrs experience helping people become better and more spontaneous speakers. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A must for any professional who influences people.......2007-02-19

Book Description

When this novel's eager protagonist, Jerry Chiffon, dressed in a red ladies' suit and carrying a fake Chanel purse, tries to assassinate a right-wing United States senator in Branch Creek, North Carolina, he succeeds in putting the tiny town on the national map. Have You Heard introduces a host of inimitable characters with endearing foibles, not-so-endearing foibles, and closely held, destructive secrets.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars On Being Different in Small Town America.......2004-06-02

On day Jerry Chiffon from Branch Creek, North Carolina, dressed to the nines in a lady's red suit, "the kind favored by Nancy Reagan," with tasteful red, white and blue accessories, goes to a political rally at the State Capitol. Upon arriving, he pulls out a pistol and fires a round of shots at North Carolina's homophobic, racist U. S. Senator Henry Hampton. (Who on earth could Mr. Ferrell have based this character on?) This is just the beginning of Mr. Ferrell's tale of a small Southern town with all its pretentiousness, customs and secrets. The author understands completely the mindset of Small Town USA where everyone attends funerals, whether they knew the deceased or not, and take obligatory casseroles to the wake. And if there is anything unusual about the deceased-- say a father is buried in the same coffin with his deformed son-- then the funeral may have to be moved to the high-school auditorium to handle the crowds. Everybody knows everybody else's business, or at least they think they do. "No, sir. We never leave each other alone or to our own individual devices. I am glad to say I know everybody's business, and I am proud they know mine." But it is in this small town environment, where boys won't "let their mothers help them with a necktie," that Jerry Chiffon takes home economics in high school and instructs the local ladies about style. From him they learn many things: that you live in a house; you are "at home" and that you shouldn't wear too much jewelry to a funeral, for example. Bathrooms should be white; telephones, black. And you never have unlit candles anywhere.

Mr. Ferrell has written a brilliant novel, rich in detail, and funny in the tradition of SPLENDORA but ultimately a sad commentary on being different. Jerry neither fits completely into the glitzy gay life of New York just before and during the worst of the AIDS epidemic nor in the little North Carolina town to which he returns although there is that sort of "let's not talk about it" mentality of the town, particularly among the women. In their defense, they stand by Jerry when he gets in trouble; but of course, the gossip mill works practically 24/7.

This is not just Jerry's story. Maggie Labrette, his mentor, and Dr. Parchman Anderson, the local practitioner, figure prominently as well as the plot takes a surprise twist near the end of this novel.

HAVE YOU HEARD is ultimately about being different, missed opportunities, love and courage, and in the words of the author, "the goodness of people." In describing the awfulness of the AIDS epidemic in New York and how people rallied around the dying, Jerry, in prison, remembers that "the world divided along the lines of those who are willing to help and those who are not. . . Finding the helpful was like finding you [his friend Maggie] and the others again. . ."

Mr. Ferrell has created in Jerry Chiffon a character you will not soon forget. This is a fine book indeed.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous prose, deeply moving.......2004-05-31

I was immediately drawn to this book by the hilarious voice of it's first narrator, Mrs. I. C. Lamm, a deliciously vain southern cousin to the anti-heroine of Robert Plunkett's "Love Junkie". (On opening up her home for a charity tour attended by the lower classes: "The things that usually happen with such people around did...Imagine women holding their spewing children over my front porch railing. My azaleas are still not speaking to me.") Mrs. Lamm steps back temporarily, and the story of Maggie Labrette and her discovery of Jerry-a sharecropper's child with a penchant for performing can-can dances with a fertilizer sack for a dress-is told through a succession of viewpoints, dipping back and skipping forward in time. As the tale of Jerry's harrowing journey to New York and back unfolds, the humor gradually gives way to a surprising, darkly detailed, and deeply affecting love story.

"Have You Heard," is the work of a mature intellect at the top of his game. Anderson Ferrell not only knows how to craft a gorgeous sentence and a tightly woven narrative, he knows a great deal about love and loss, and that wisdom gives this finely wrought tale a rare depth.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars THe inside story.......2003-02-07

THis book have you heard about Elizabeth is really fun to read. It helps you think about how to solve teenage promblems. THen you can alwas read over and over. This kind of books are also addicting to read. Once you read one you have to read the rest.
THis book that I am reading is now is called Sweet Valley university have you heard about Elizabeht? It is a bout Jessica and her sister ELizabeth. THey are having some trouble with realationships . Jessica has a boyfriend named Nick . He does not want her to be in Bobby Hornets contest. It is a Bathing suit contest and nick disagrees because she wants to go on a date with Bobby Hornet. Later nick get drunk and does not know what to do. That is the only thing that he could think of to do.
That's enough about Jessica . LEts talk about Elizabeth. SHE is going through a tuff time in her life because she caught her boyfriend TOm kissing Dana. She saw with her own eyes so she had to break up with him. Elizabeth knows inside that she loves tomm but she can't express it when she see's Dana she starts to cry. Rumor says that Elizabeth is leaving Sweet Valley to get rid of seeing tom, but Elizabeth says no. WIll tom express to Elizabeth that he still loves her? Will Elizabeth stay in Sweet Valley.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good..but also a bit disappointing...........2001-10-09

I just hope Liz had checked 'NO' 'cause Sweet Valley just won't be same with her in Denver!!!!
I always have thought she was kind of a bore, but that doesn't mean she is not my fave twin.....
The reason I gave 3 stars is 'cause I don't like Scott or Tom Watts!!!
Scott Slimeball- as Tom put him, I don't think he is kind of person Liz will go out with......
I think it's just because her terrible break-up with Tom had caused her to do uncharacteristic things and that is why she is going out with Scott...(I think..)

But anyway,I recommend this book to you, but when you read it over and over again it could easily get you to SLEEP!!!

4 out of 5 stars From An Expert.............2000-12-30

I'D GIVE IT 5 OUT OF TEN! Really, Francine- for some serious rommance, you need to make Scott come on stronger. It was OK, but borrow it from a friend, or the library before going out and buying it- even if you do own every Sweet Valley Book ever published.

5 out of 5 stars Good but, please - get rid of Dana and Scott!.......2000-06-10

Much as I love Liz and Tom, I just wish that they would use their B-R-A-I-N-S and T-A-L-K with each other. It's so annoying that they cannot have an adult conversation without resorting to silly insults. And what is it with Dana and Scott? Can't Liz and Tom (two intelligent beings - supposedly) see what manipulative creeps they are? Especially Dana, I mean, if she loves Tom so much - why is she hiding things from him? Scott is just a jerk, it's so obvious that he's just using Liz as a trophy rather than a girlfriend. Jessica should just wake up from La-La land, I mean, what is she on? Police work is certainly not fun - not if someone has a gun to your head. But, I do think that Nick is good for her maybe he'll calm her down a bit. Overall, I do reccommend it, even if the Liz and Tom thing does tend to irritate.

3 out of 5 stars This book was ok. That's all........1999-06-13

This book was ok, but I concentrated too much on Elizabeth likes Tom, Tom likes Elizabeth, Scott likes Elizabeth, and Dana likes Tom. Scott and Dana are big sleazes, and I still can't believe that Dana hid the letter from Tom to Elizabeth. But I think that Elizabeth and Tom are too obsessive when they're together, so they hopefully won't get back together. And they need to stop feeling so guilty about not being with eachother. If they hate each other, then why do they keep thinking of eachother? I think that this book was sorriest of all the SVU books.

              Book Description

Come to the world of the River.Come to a world distant in time and space, a world where the pace of life is counted by tides of the great River, but where, as in the river itself, there are swift dark currents flowing under a placid surface.Meet Pamra Don--a young woman scarred by her mother's death, lured to a preist-hood where the truth must be hidden from the faithful. And meet Thrasne, a young boatman who trades from town to town, free from the iron control of the towers of the Awakeners, and the priests of the world of the River--free, that is, as long as he never speaks his mind. These two, by design and accident both, are about to discover many truths. And on the Northshore of the River, the truth can kill you.

5 out of 5 stars Gave me nightmares for a week.......2006-09-03

This book is so strange and so detailed, it is easy to forget the real world. In fact, this book gave me nightmares for a week. I just described the plot to a friend of mine, and it gave her nightmares too! A great read, but very creepy and surreal. The lack of explanation for the ending is a little frustrating but should not deter you. I would love to read some of Tepper's other work, but frankly I am a bit afraid after the intensity of this one.

4 out of 5 stars The Missing Center.......2001-07-09

Started out great, as usual with Ms Tepper. However, on reaching page 161, up popped a short story or something entitled, "All Flesh is Clay," followed on page 168 by "Twenty-two and Absolutely Free" and on page 190 by "Hooked On Buzzer" which ended on page 192 with the reappearance of The Awakeners' page 193.

What I read was fine but the missing 30 pages ruined it. Obviously the publisher, Orb, ripped you off as well as me

              5 out of 5 stars A wonderful surprise from a great author.......1999-12-30

I've been a great fan of Sheri S. Tepper's for years, but somehow I missed this book, perhaps because it was published before I started her books. I'm glad I finally found it! Ms. Tepper is one of the few authors whose work seems to be detiorating with time; the quality of her books have been going downhill since "Gibbon's Decline and Fall". But this is vintage Tepper: a great plot, compelling and interesting characters and even a message about the nature of humans. Don't miss this one!

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyed but still feel there is more needing explaining.......1999-11-06

I enjoyed the book (Sheri Tepper is one of my favorite writers). This book (combo of two volumes) definitly has a plentitude (?) of twists, plotting, romance, and details. Once started I didn't want to put it down....HOWEVER, while you learn a LOT about the Thraish, the Talkers, and the Trecci...it is rather annoying that more detail and attention was not given in developing the Strangeys, their contribution to life on the planet, and the conclusion of the Lila substory. In some ways it feels like the needed explanations were cut out in the editing and unfortunately, the result left me feeling that there is a fairly large hole in the narrat sligtly wanting. Ultimately it was hard for me to give an rating - I think 3 and a half stars really more accurately reflects my feelings.

5 out of 5 stars A complex, carefully crafted, exciting fantasy ride........1999-09-13

As usual Tepper brings to life a complex and extremely realistic world. Her heroic characters are multi-dimensional and evolve during the course of the story. The plot twists and turns as the host of main characters (there have to be at least ten) each add to the story from their own point of view. Somehow Tepper manages to keep all the action coherent and moving in a forward direction but the reader has to really pay attention! This is not a book that you can put down and pick up two weeks later unless you have a phenomenal memory. The only weak element is in the creation of the villians. They are almost one-dimensional and are reminiscent of the flat villians of Tepper's Six Moon Dance. Villians aside though, this is a typically wonderful Tepper book. You'll feel sad when its over.
