Heaven by Randy Alcorn.......2007-10-10
I purchased this book because I wanted to learn more about Heaven. My husband died July 25, 2006. This book has given me so much to hope for. I know I will see my husband again. I know now that we will continue our relationship in Heaven and be able to enjoy all the wonderful things we enjoyed together only in Heaven they will be even better. Our reserected new earth will be such a joy to behold. I gave my first book "Heaven" by Randy Alcorn to friend of mine who was going through the same thing with her husband (both had brain cancer). I wanted her to find the same hope that I had in reading this book. I purchased a second book from Amazon and am so very glad I did. I would recommend this book very highly to anyone who is interested in learning the blessings that God has promised his children in Heaven.
A Great Gift.......2007-10-02
I bought this as a gift for my mother. She really likes the way the author described Heaven. She never looked at Heaven in this way before.
Heaven.......2007-09-18
I found Dr. Alcorn's book, Heaven, very enlightening. It answered questions for me. He addressed many of the questions that I have had since the death of my son. His answers were based on scripture and he was honest in his beliefs. We can only know from what God has said in his word and that is always left up to interpretation. I pray that Dr. Alcorn is right in his analysis. His book brought me comfort and peace.
I can't wait to get to Heaven.......2007-09-02
Randy Alcorn challelnges popular notions of heaven in thought provoking yet easy to understand style without sacrificing scholarly integrity. He cites numerous scripture passages as well as Biblical scholars to support his thesis and lays out a much richer and more interesting eternity than most of us have ever imagined. I highly recommend this book. It will provoke interesting discussions and force you to closely examine your notion of heaven.
Heaven by Randy Alcorn.......2007-09-01
There are many books written on the subject Heaven, this book is the very best on that subject. The author stays with scripture like he should and makes the reading simple enough to stay interested. When you read this book it makes heaven beyond your wildest dreams. Its a place you don't want to miss.

Heaven is real........2000-08-10
Wow, finally a factual book about heaven, told in a Novel form. I liked that I could go along with the story line, enjoying it, while learning truths about the "heaven" I learned about in childrens Sunday school. Only as an adult I hadn't been able to add much more to my understanding of it. Believe me there is much more to it than you & I learned in Sunday School. I can grab hold of and hang on to these truths. It would be a great gift-- i gave 6 copies for Christmas.
Heavens not so cloudy after all!.......2000-03-09
It seems that the modern idea of heaven is a bunch of wispy clouds and bored angels sitting around strumming their harps. Who would want to spend the rest of eternity in such a humdrum state of existence? In "What the Bible Reveals About Heaven", Daniel A. Brown truly adds the color and vitality to our eternal home that our conceptions of heaven are lacking. He guides us through the context of scripture to show us how the Bible has painted for us a glimpse of a heaven that is beyond what anything in this world can describe. Daniel also brings us back to the whole point for why God created a heaven in the first place... His unfailing love for us. "What the Bible Reveals About Heaven" will help you to see more of the heart of a God who knows just what your heart desires and just how to fulfill it! Daniel A. Brown's book is very fun to read and very easy to understand. He has a way of cutting to the meat of the scripture and how it pertains to heaven with out a bunch of spritual jargon or mythical statements. People who are not even familiar with the scriptures will still finish "What the Bible Reveals About Heaven" with a greater understanding of Heaven and of the God who created it.

Customer Reviews:
Biblically supported and wonderfully simple..........2007-05-08
I respectfully disagree with the previous reviewer. A life of faith means living according to God's word. To be a Christian means to accept Christ as the one True Savior. The Bible is God's word, and we need know nothing more or nothing less than is in it. Those seeking a more academic bent will not be satisfied with this book because it adheres strictly to Scripture in giving its answer. God Himself tells us to seek Him as children, and the answers given in this book respectfully and beautifully follow that mandate. Things of faith simply can't (and shouldn't) fall into academic frameworks, aside from learning Bible history or the particulars of the events and/or people presented in it.
The previous reviewer mentioned that many of the answers seemed to stem from the same idea: "God is infallible." Therein lies the answer. God IS infallible, and thus should be trusted even beyond our human capacity to trust. I believe it is incredibly important for children to know this, above all, if they are to live lives rich in faith. Believing in God means completely trusting that His word is the ONLY word. This book does a beautiful job of reminding children (and adults, too!) that God is constant, faithful, and unchanging, and so is His word.
Doesn't attempt to give real answers.......2003-12-30
This book won't suffice to answer the questions of a truly inquisitive, curious child. It's full of circular reasoning. One of the questions is essentially "How do we know that what the Bible says is true?" The answer, of course, is that it is God's Word. Q.E.D. And how do we know it's God's Word? Bible citations. Another quibble: It neatly skips around the issue of nonbelievers going to hell by saying that only Christians will go to heaven, so wouldn't it be a good idea to tell all your friends and neighbors about Jesus now?--implying, but not willing to put it down on paper, that your kid's Jewish best friend or agnostic Aunt Martha are headed for eternal hellfire. You'll be in trouble if your kid takes the conversation in that direction and you're relying on this book to help you "explain" things!
The essential answer to *all* the questions in this book is "because God is infallible." That's fine for some people, but, as I said, it won't satisfy a child for whom these questions are more than idle curiosity. I don't expect such a book to give scientific or non-Christian answers, but I didn't see much discussion of *faith* at all. That, to me, would have been a much better answer to many of these questions, and would be of such greater value to a developing child than, essentially, "because I said so." Who needs a book to tell them how to give that answer?
Note: Catholics will want to stay away from this book--it is of an evangelical cast and I noticed at least one question/answer which contradicts Catholic doctrine.

The writing is ghosted, not the subject. Char may be the real thing, but the overly labored ghost writing kills any real feeling of sincerity.

Who couldn't benefit from using a bit of intuition?.......2007-01-10
I was interested in hearing what Char had to say after seeing how accurate her readings were on her show, especially when it came to identifying very specific, many times very obscure, names of people. Her book gave me insight into the type of person she is - compassionate and optimistic. She offers specific exercises to develop or hone your intutive abilities and even offers advice as to how to protect yourself from negative energies. She also offers objective advice on why you should not be dependent on pyschic readings. I haven't attempted any of the intutition-developing exercises myself and so would be interested if anyone has had any success with them. She says that everyone has "intuition" and that like any other skill, that it takes practice, so for those interested in exploring how to tap into this extra sense or those like myself who are merely curious as to how it all works, this book is an interesting read.

Good for those who just need ideas..........2007-04-18
This book is helpful, though it is rather cheesy in many of the lessons. This is perfect for those who are just looking for ideas, the sparks to get their minds going down the right track, because following their lessons to the letter leaves the ideas either over simplified or just unclear. If you are looking for a total lesson outline that is good and relevant, keep looking. If you are looking for something to give you ideas that you can then beef up on your own to make them the best they can be, then this may be for you.
Dogs are Angels on Earth.......2006-06-18
Of course dogs will be in Heaven as they have pure souls. As the owner of a pet assisted therapy dog who attends a church service weekly -- we have been assured that dogs are Angels on Earth and will meet us in Heaven -- this books is a lovely introduction for children to the thought process.

Sweet read for day or night.......2004-04-01
This book is the journey of a child's thoughts and discovery of love and connection, heaven and G-d. My kids are 8 and 9 (boy and girl) and they still both sit so quietly for it. They smile at the sweetness of the thoughts that Pip shares with his mother. They like the way the mother talks with Pip. It sets a nice tone for us for going to bed. I love this little book. It may make it to the books I save to read to grandkids someday.
You don't have to be any particular religion to appreciate this book. Many Blessings.

The LaZelle family of southern California has a secret: they can do magic. Real magic. As a teenager, a LaZelle undergoes "the Transition"--a severe illness that will either kill him or leave him with magical powers. If he's lucky, he gains a talent like shape-changing or wish-granting. If he's unlucky, he never experiences Transition. If he's especially unlucky, he undergoes Transition late, which increases his chances of dying. And if he survives, he will bear the burden of a dark, dangerous magic: the ability to cast only curses. And curse he must, for when a LaZelle doesn't use his magic, it kills him.
In Nina Kiriki Hoffman's A Fistful of Sky, Gypsum LaZelle is unique among her brothers and sisters: she has not undergone Transition. She resigns herself to a mundane, magic-bereft existence as a college student. Then one weekend, when her family leaves her home alone, she becomes gravely ill... --Cynthia Ward
Book Description
Gypsum LaZelle is the middle child in a gifted family of witches and warlocks. But unlike her siblings, she has no gift to call her own. Until she wakes from a fever--and discovers that she possesses a strange and frightening power.

Customer Reviews:
Haunting.......2007-06-14
This book is wonderful, terrific. Very power psychological tale, very modern setting, very appealing characters - all of them. Both thumbs up!
A waste of time.......2007-05-28
I read over a hundred pages of this book, only to chuck it in the library return pile. For most of the first half of the story, the protagonist just runs around using her new-found powers in silly ways. She doesn't seem to suffer any ill effects from this. She doesn't grow as a person. She doesn't change. And it isn't even all that amusing.
The story hints at depth--Gyp's abusive mother; the disparity between the magical and non-magical in a marriage; life-threatening illness; a power of curses--but none of it ever seems to pan out. The story offers an ocean of possibility, and we're stuck in the wading pool with little kiddie water-wings.
I'm just annoyed I wasted the time I did.
Strange Amoral Wonderment .......2006-10-24
I bought this on a whim; the title reminded of a "Hatful of Sky" by Terry Pratchett. This is a coming of age tale combined with an unusual family dynamic. The family are magic-users in a modern world where magic is thought to not exist.
Gyp(sum), our main character is repressed. She'd grown used to being the normal one in her magical family, when her powers manifested later in life. The one thing she has is a loving family, even if they scare her or accidentally hurt her (whose family hasn't done that?).
Hoffman de-emphasizes situational ethics, as Gyp explores her powers and the consequences of her actions. Gyp's family doesn't set limits, and she doesn't really understand the concept, but she does understand 'do no harm.'
The story has overtones of trust, acceptance, dependency, and self-exploration constrasting a backdrop of mundane vs. magical. Situations arising in the novel are ethically gray, and Gyp has a devil over her shoulder. She acts as her own damaged angel.
Overall, novel elements are fine, but nowhere does the author tell us how much Gyp actually weighs. This information stopped me from forming good mental pictures of some events described.
Three and a half stars (round up to four) because the story runs out, too open ended to be an ending. You could interpret the end as a triumph of trust or a triumph of guillibility. I wanted to love this book, but had to settle on liking it.
A mess.......2006-09-17
I really had high hopes for this book, considering all the good reviews it got. And the author did have a good idea. I just wish it had been executed better. This book never really found a plot. It seemed like the author just wrote from stream of consciousness, explaining one mishandled curse after another. On top of that, it wasn't written very well. I felt like it was written by a 14 year old. The dialogue was ridiculous. People don't talk the way she wrote them. And since it's written in first person, unfortunately the whole book has that same problem. Another problem is the characterization, or lack thereof. I never felt like I knew who any of these people, including the main character. We were told characteristics about them all, but we aren't really shown them, so it's hard to really feel who these people are. The "plot" centers around the main character learning and growing from having to deal with her curse power, but she doesn't seem to do much of either and instead becomes even more codependent through this process. The ending is absolutely strange and completely ridiculous. I honestly can't even believe I finished this book. I think I only did because it was sort of fascinating to see what stupid thing was going to happen next.
GENIUS!.......2006-06-04
This is my first encounter with Hoffman, but definitely not my last. In fact I have just ordered everything I could find that she has written.
My question is, how, in all my years of reading, have I missed her until now? No matter. I have found her. I only hope she keeps writing as fast as I can read.
I read "A Fistful of Sky" with wonder and delight. It is pure magic.
Her characters are vividly alive, her worlds infinitely believable and fascinating.
And her brand of magic is unlike any other. I cannot recommend this book highly
enough. I could not put it down. I could hardly wait until my day was done so that I
could once again curl up for the night and enter this wondrous world of Hoffman's creation.
Sheer genius!
