Book Description

Gail Tsukiyama has been praised as a writer with 'wit, grace, and keen insight'* for her bestselling novels. Now, she moves from Asia to America in this stunning contemporary debut. Set in present day California, Dreaming Water is a wrenching portrait of mothers, daughters, and friends. Cate is caring for her daughter Hana who is suffering from Werner's Syndrome, which makes a person age at twice the rate of a healthy individual; at thirty-eight, Hana has the appearance of an eighty-year-old. As Hana's disease progresses, she and Cate must come to terms with their past and make peace with their future. Their quiet world is turned upside down when Hana's best friend appears with her two energetic daughters after being gone for many years. Gail Tsukiyama is at her best in this poignant, gripping, and beautiful story of love, loss, and friendship.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars She did it again!.......2006-12-02

What a wonderful story! I have read most of Gail Tsukiyama's books and this is second to the Samurai Garden.

3 out of 5 stars Great concept, poor follow-through.......2006-04-07

The idea and concept of a young woman dying of old-age disease could be an intersting story. However, there was a lack of depthness to this novel. Ms. Tsukiyama writes each chapter assuming a different character, however, I had to keep going back to the chapter title to see who was speaking because there was no way to distinguish one character from another - they all spoke in very similar styles and language (almost as if she took on ALL of the characters herself - a one-woman show!), sometimes overly poetic or heavy on the metaphores and similes, that it took away from the story. Towards the end, it did get more touching and I must admit, I did get a tightness in my throat, but the ending left a lot unsaid, unsettled and could have had more meat to it.
I love her other book Women of the Silk, and was hoping for more.

3 out of 5 stars A Warm Fantasy.......2005-11-17

The subject made me leery of reading this book, and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the writing and by its readability. Totally unexpected were the many insights into WWII and the Japanese internment, and how the victims and their children were affected by it. I found that aspect of the book enlightening and realistic. However, the story works in part because of the picture-perfect relationships between Max and Cate, a loving husband and wife, between Cate and Hana, a loving and caring and understanding mother and her child, between Hana and Laura, a lifelong and utterly honest friendship without conflict or jealousy, between Max's parents and himself and his child -- everyone is so GOOD, so LOVING, so UNDERSTANDING. That makes this a warm and satisfying story, and, believe me, the quiet resolution at the end of the book IS enjoyable and satisfying. However, I prefer stories that recognize that few people have such perfect relationships with their parents or their children, few people ever experience a true, lifelong, soul-mate friendship. I prefer stories that show us how real people deal with realistic relationships in our real world. It would have been more satisfying if there had been a little more conflict and a little more coping before reaching the same warm and uplifting ending.

2 out of 5 stars Dreaming Water.......2005-08-24

Gail's writing is again wonderful in this in book, but I found the book disappointing due to a lack of closure. I felt the book led you up to a particular point in the life of the character's and then left you wondering in the end what the message was meant to be. I almost felt as if the writer wasn't brave enough enough to tell you the ending to a tragic, yet hopeful story. I can only compare this book to the Samurai's Garden since I haven't read a third book by this author yet, and I loved the Samari's Garden! So I was surprised that this book lacked closure at the end. I am not sorry that I read this book due to the fact that I enjoy the author's style of writing.

1 out of 5 stars Dreaming Water - More Like A Nightmare.......2005-06-27

Having read all of Gail Tsukiyama's other books, and loving them, I couldn't wait to get my hands on Dreaming Water. It was a huge disappointment, a simply depressing story, with no imagination. To keep to her beautiful story telling, I think Ms. Tsukiyama should stick to the asian background of her previous novels.

          Book Description

The ZERI Fables series includes 18 beautifully illustrated, bi-lingual Spanish/English children's books that use Gunter Pauli's ZERI* Education model to teach children science. The books include a teachers and parents guide and hands on activities that help children apply what they have learned. Gunter Pauli's ZERI* Education model proposes that children, adolescents and young adults learn science in a way that gives them a more profound academic understanding at the same time that it helps develop their emotional intelligence, eco-literacy, and artistic/creative capacities. If children are to learn how to think, design, create, and dream in systems, then they must be exposed to systems thinking at an early age. Critical concepts become part of the child's long-term memory and the student gains an intuitive grasp of the big picture. Then the learning of the specific tools, concepts, and principles involved become far more appealing. When students start with a story that integrates ethics, economics, biology, and mathematics, they will be drawn to studying those disciplines later on. Pauli's work in sustainable manufacturing and agricultural became the catalyst for a major educational reform in Colombia. The strife and violence that exists in this country spawned an urgent desire on the part of college students to rebuild their society. The professors and engineering students at University EAFIT in Medellin, Colombia, eagerly embraced an integrated educational approach, including a compulsory course in biology for engineering majors. As the concept spread to other universities, the need to mold the earlier educational tracks in this new direction became apparent; first in a High School in Manizales where ZERI's coffee and bamboo projects have taken off, and then in elementary schools which asked for a version of this program adapted to their level, comparable to the Garden School projects of the Center for Ecoliteracy.

                      Book Description

                      Christmas in Camelot
It begins with a simple invitation to spend Christmas Eve in Camelot, a magical place that exists only in myth and fantasy. What Jack and Annie don’t know is that the invitation will send them on a quest to save Camelot itself — not from destruction, but from being forgotten forever.

                      Haunted Castle on Hallow’s Eve
The castle looms dark against the light of the moon. Giant ravens circle in the sky. Merlin the magician needs someone to find out what has happened. But who is brave enough to brush the cobwebs aside and go through the heavy doors? Merlin thinks he knows the answer to these questions–Jack and Annie.

                      Summer of the Sea Serpent
Jack and Annie are off on another mythical mission at the request of Merlin the magician. Luckily, they have a young sorcerer, Teddy, to help them. From underwater caves to a Spider Queen, from mystical selkies to a magical sword, this is a Magic Tree House adventure kids won’t want to miss!

                      Winter of the Ice Wizard
Jack and Annie, joined by Teddy and Kathleen travel in the Magic Tree House to a land of snow where the Ice Wizard has captured Morgan and Merlin. The four friends must find the Ice Wizard’s missing eye . . . or is it really his heart that is missing?

                      Book Description

CAN THE WIZARD OF RHYME SOLVE A ROYAL CRIME?

There's little love lost between the kindly monarchs of Merovence and the scheming sovereigns of Bretanglia. But when the brutish Prince Gaheris--heir apparent to the Bretanglian throne--is murdered during a brawl in a Merovence tavern, any pretense of civility between the two kingdoms flies out the window faster than the mysterious brigand who committed the dastardly deed.

While the outraged king and queen of Bretanglia declare their intention to lay siege to Merovence, royal wizard Matthew Mantrell suspects the slain prince was done in by one of his own "loyal" subjects.

As both sides gird for battle, Matt sets out--with trusty dragon in tow--to catch the killer. But the road to royal justice is rocky indeed, and a powerful sorcerer, a sinister cult of false druids, and a mischievous spirit are just some of the obstacles Matt must conquer--by wit or wizardry--to save his enchanted land from unholy forces of darkness . . .

4 out of 5 stars Another solid novel in an interesting series........2000-01-22

This book is a continuation of an interesting series by Mr. Stasheff. I like "historical" fantasy, and this is a fun little romp through an alternative England and Ireland (Bretanglia and Erin). While not as detailed and intricate as some other "historical" fantasy authors (such as Guy Gavriel Kay), this is a well written and entertaining book, with a firm emphasis on adventure and action, with plenty of political manoeuvering and backstabbing, chivalry, magic, and good vs. evil to keep anyone satisfied.

The plot in this book is somewhat predictable at times, such as the virtuous Prince who was "killed" but comes back from the dead to claim his throne from his evil brother, with the help of the good guys of course; and who killed the initial heir to the throne of Bretanglia became fairly obvious to me early on in the book. These gripes aside, I still enjoyed this book, and I recommend anyone who has enjoyed previous books from this series to read this one. However, this may not be the best book to read if you haven't read any of the other books in this series, as you may not understand all the background information that this book is refering to (in other words, read the first book, Her Majesty's Wizard, and all the sequels in order, before you read this one -- trust me, its worth it). The good thing about all the books in this series, including this one, is that each one has a distinct ending, and does not leave you hanging until the next one.

All in all, this book is a good continuation to a fun and entertaining series, and I am eagerly awaiting the next one!

In the Haunted Wizard,Stasheff spins an artful yarn that weaves several eras of English history[ in this universe anyway] into a merry old jaunt thru Bretanglia. For fans of the play and movie "The Lion in Winter", this book captures the wonderful scheming and backbiting of an ambitious royal family in medieval Europe. The use of Celtic and Druidic rituals and magic fits in wonderfully with the premise for this series. Matt Mantrell,The Lord Wizard, continues to keep one entertained in this book with his integrity, mastery of wizardry and his abilty to land on his feet. Other titles I would recommend would be Tad Williams' Dragonbone Chair;Stephen R. Donaldson's A Man rides Through;Margret Weis' The Lost King

                        5 out of 5 stars The story.......2003-12-06

This book is actually based on a town. In fact its the one i live in. Their is an old opera house that is all run down and John Bellairs wrote a book about it. He also based "The House With the Clock in its Walls" off a Marshall house.

5 out of 5 stars "The dead will rise...".......2002-09-23

"Doom of the Haunted Opera" is one of my favorite books by John Bellairs/Brad Strickland, a good mix of spookiness, humor, supernatural megalomania, and a dash of real human fears. Lewis Barnavelt and Rose Rita Pottinger are at their best here.

Jonathan Barnavelt receives the news that a friend -- another wizard -- has recently died, and posthumously asks that Jonathan and Mrs. Zimmermann take care of his old magical objects. The two leave New Zebedee, and Rose Rita and Lewis are left to their own devices. They explore an old opera house and find a crumbling old opera called "Day of Doom," by Immanuel Vanderhelm. As Lewis finds the opera, he sees a ghostly dead man who calls out "Beware the doom of the haunted opera! He means to be King of the Dead!"

Then a strange man appears in the town, claiming to Vanderhelm's grandson. He means to put on as performance of the opera, and at first everything appears to be all right. But soon all the adults in the town are enamored -- and enspelled -- by Henry Vanderhelm, communications with the outside world are cut off, wizards are locked in their houses, and Lewis sees a tomb statue come alive in the graveyard. With the help of a well-meaning ghost and a grandmotherly witch, can Rose Rita and Lewis hope to stop the raising of the dead?

Anyone who has suffered through a badly-performed opera will enjoy the idea of one being a necromancer's spell. The imaginative plot base is only one of the appealing things about "Doom." The incredibly grim and tense plot is leavened by humor, such as Jailbird the whistling cat and Finster, a ghost who inadvertantly freaks out Lewis with ghostly intonations, then makes himself sound more friendly. Aside from the usual fears of evil sorcerers, there is also the chilling fact that the capable adults are not present throughout much of the book -- we get to see how Lewis and Rose Rita can try to handle the situation on their own. Any kid who has had to deal with a crisis on their own can relate to the fear and frustration of the heroes in this book.

Lewis is, as always, a sweet timid boy who has more guts than he knows. Rose Rita is his equal friend (she can't really be classified as a sidekick) who has to take matters into her own hands when Lewis vanishes. Mrs. Jaeger is a little too vague to be entirely believable, but the idea of an absent-minded grandmotherly witch is a nice one. The deceased Finster is a good source for plot-related info, and mildly amusing as well. And Vanderhelm is an outstandingly sinister villain.

Full of the funny and the spooky, this is a first-rate thriller for fans of fantasy, horror, and John Bellairs. Excellent read.

4 out of 5 stars A good book for those into mystery, and horror stories........2000-02-29

I felt that this book really drew me into its plot. The evil man trying to produce this opera made me realize how charming and innocent people sound when you don't have all the pieces of their life story. It was also exciting to see Rose Rita, and Mrs. Jaeger coming together to thicken and enrich the plot. The only criticism is that there's not much of an epilogue at the end of this story.

4 out of 5 stars This was a pretty good book.......1998-02-11

I have reviewed this book as 8. It was a great book but it needed a better ending. Rose Rita and Lewis go searching through a sealed up opera house when Lewis finds a lost piece of Music. Little did he know he was bring a evil ghost back to life to try to take over the world.

5 out of 5 stars Very smooth transition from author to author.......1998-01-03

Brad Strickland must have faced a considerable task when he began the completion of John Bellair's books. For years, John's heroes of Anthony Monday, Johnny Dixon, Lewis Barnavelt and Rose Rita Pottinger kept the reader busy as they explored and fell into all sorts of settings and supernatural events. From the Windrow curse to the dark secret of Weatherend, the books that Bellairs wrote captivated me, and it certainly wasn't just because of the plot twists and ever-changing settings. Bellairs had a style of writing that made his books close to the reader, even with a setting in another time or even another dimension. Brad Strickland has proved that the transition from the now unfortunately late Bellairs to him is going smoothly. His Hand of the Necromancer did not fail as he went "solo", and neither does the Doom of the Haunted Opera, which was begun by Bellairs as a sketch and finished by Strickland.

Our Lewis Barnavelt and Rose Rita are stuck in cozy (But boring) little New Zebedee, waiting for excitement. Discovering an old opera score, the excitement quickly comes when all adults in the town are swept up in the music rush. The composer of the opera's grandson comes to town, and it is quickly revealed that he has more interests with New Zebedee's inhabitants than just performing a dusty old work and setting up shop at the local Four Seasons Hotel. But unfortunately, pending the performance of an aria from the opera called "The Sealing", a mysterious fog has descended upon New Zebedee and trapped everyone inside it. And the sinister machinations of our dear villain (posing as the willing opera conducter, and world famous singer as well) go deeper and deeper...

This book was very good; it provided the familiar characters fans of Bellairs' have grown to love yet produced a new predicament (the sealing off of the town, though this curiously resembles Lewis's imprisonment inside Barnavelt Manor in a previous Bellairs/Strickland novel, The Vengeance of the Witch-Finder) and a new villain. Certainly Brad Strickland has pulled it off; Doom of the Haunted Opera is true Bellairs, yet Strickland has also managed to add a little of his own flavor into the story without warping its style. Not as climactic and eerie as the Ghost in the Mirror (which I consider to be an incredible achievement) or as creepy as The Drum, the Doll, and the Zombie, but very good. With the new books out, Bellairs' series have not died. Brad Strickland has managed to continue the Bellairs spirit, but also with something new.

Good story. Heavy on the romance needed a bit more mystery. This is the 2nd book of a 3, I'm hoping by the time I read the third it will form a complete story rather than incomplete chapters.

4 out of 5 stars the best of the triology.......2007-09-05

this is by far the best out of the three raintree books. it has amazing characterization and lots to keep you glued to the page. it is very obvious that the author had a firm grasp on the subject matter and had a lot of fun.

Gideon Raintree prefers to work alone; nonetheless, he is assigned a new partner, Hope Malory, when a woman is murdered after being mistaken for Gideon's cousin. Quickly, they determine that there is a serial killer on the loose, but one thing that Gideon keeps from Hope is the fact that the killer is after his family, because of their numerous psychic gifts. He sees spirits, both of the dead and those yet to be born. Hope is a die-hard skeptic, but she may well have to change her tune the longer she's around Raintree. For one thing, a certain spirit seems to think that they are her parents.

*** Strong characters carry this fast paced, edgy story. Though you always know "who dun it," that does not diminish the suspense as you watch Gideon deal with the living and dead as he tries to stop the spread of evil. ***

                              4 out of 5 stars Same story; 3 authors.......2007-08-27

I must admit i got these 3 books because i liked the idea of 3 friends writing a serial, especially when one of them was Linda Howard. I liked Haunted. I liked the idea that the fermale lead knew what she wanted and was willing to push to get her man. And I was glad that the author did not have Hope agonizing over the fact that Gideon talked to dead people. She accepted him and his differences in a reasonable amount of time and fashion. None of that usual 100 pages of the heroine vacillating between true love and being repulsed by her lovers abilities, which gets on my nerves. One of the best lines in the book is written after Hope and Gideon make love for the first time, and Hope tells him "You give a whole new meaning to the word afterglow Gideon."----loved that line.A nice short read that continues the story line smoothly, with 2 people you can really care about. What else does a book need?

4 out of 5 stars The second in a good series.......2007-08-13

The Raintree series continues well in this second novel... quick reading but entertaining. The characters are believeable.
