Phenominal!.......2007-03-11
This is a delicious book. I'd love to use it for a college design textbook.
What is wit?.......2006-08-20
This book effectively and clearly outlines different kinds of visual wit. People often say you cannot learn or study topics like this... "A Smile in the Mind" dispels this myth. For anyone who is interested in learning more about communication through wit.
When the brain farts.......2006-06-05
I read the reviews, I like wit. I like deisign. thought that this wiuld be a good book for me to get. WRONG. The book is filled with lackluster designs using wit from the 80's and 70's. WIT is not an excuse for poor design. There are some good pieces, but most of them are out dated. Get this book if you want a history lesson about 80's design. The only good thing about the book are the interviews at the end and that is not worth the price of admission. Phaidon has done me wrong again. Will, no, can they put out a good book?
Inspirational and Invigorating........2005-08-26
This is an exceptional book on the topic of visual wit. It does give more credit to a few pedestrian examples than is absolutely deserved, but it's an awesome read. That is, if you actually READ it, and not just look at the pretty pictures, it is interesting, inspiring, and invigorating. It's an excellent book to read when you are getting burned out by killjoy clients, the CEO's wife, or non-existant budgets.
Especially useful are the interviews in the back. Realizing that even Saul Bass and Milton Glaser had/have issues with creativity and wit is inspiring.
THE solution for creativity block..........2005-08-09
I've read tens of design books, yet this is the one I'd recommend if you were lost on an island and only had access to one.
It contains some of the wittiest designs and creations, and takes a good stab at explaining what made them witty in the first place.
If you want to get your creative juices flowing and innovate to the extend the world has never seen, this is the book to pray to.
A pleasure to read from start to finish.

Humor in Art.......2000-03-31
This book celebrates visual humor in its many forms: whimsy, wit, parody, irony, satire, and nonsense. Nearly two hundred reproductions (many in color) are used to illustrate humor as an art form. Various types of visual humor are traced using comic iconography found in early history down through the ages to contemporary times. Both 2-D and 3-D forms of humorous art are considered as the author explores ways in which artists transform ordinary subjects into strange and unconventional ones.

Customer Reviews:
A Great Book!.......2002-11-20
This book is a must-have for anyone with an interest in cartooning and humorous illustration in general. I had the first edition of this paperback (published in 1973)... that edition has a different cover and shows up in used bookstores occasionally. The chapters about Jack Davis and Mort Drucker were great... two very good Mad Magazine artists (along with Sergio Aragones and Al Jaffee). But my all-time favorite part of this book is the chapter that focuses on Bob Jones. Bob is a great funny animal (anthropomorphic animal) illustrator who created the cartoon Exxon Tiger (also known as the Esso Tiger), a famous icon in America and around the world. There are several great pictures of the Exxon tiger in this book including a model sheet with different expressions! This part of the book alone is great because it's so hard to find pictures of the cartoon tiger like unless you go to the Exxon web site or find old advertisements for Exxon/Esso with pictures of the tiger. In fact, you can go to the Exxon (or ExxonMobil) web site [...] and enter "tiger" in the search field for info from the company about the character. Exxon introduced its cartoon tiger in 1964 as the star of its 'Put a Tiger in Your Tank' ad campaign. (May be hard to find cartoon images now because of the Kelloggs vs. Exxon Lawsuit lost by Exxon in 2000). Anyway, other artists featured in this book are Federico Fellini, Paul Coker, Will Eisner, Jules Feiffer, Gerry Gersten, Johnny Hart, Donald Reilly, Norman Rockwell, Arnold Roth and Maurice Sendack.

Fun book to be appreciated by all........1999-01-01
I supplied the issues of Life Magazine to Dover that was used to produce this book. Carol did a fine job of selecting the illustrations used in this clip art book. They depict the age of the 20's and 30's nicely. I was pleased with the results.

Andy Warhol: Illustrations and Drawings of the 1950's
ASIN: 0821223194 |
Book Description
Before he found fame as the father of Pop Art, Andy Warhol was an accomplished advertising illustrator and commercial artist for fashion tastemakers such as Barney's, Neiman Marcus, I. Miller, Glamour, Mademoiselle, and Harper's Bazaar. This delicately beautiful, colorfully playful, and hugely influential fashion illustration work from the 1950s has never before been collected in a book. A pop object in itself, Andy Warhol Fashion is a fun and gorgeous gallery of hundreds of his most delightful images. These witty drawings -- fanciful shoes, chic hats, smart suits, and perfect accessories to match -- showcase his unique ability to find inspiration in the everyday and elevate the ordinary to the extraordinary. Sprinkled with Warhol's perceptively funny observations ("When you think about it, department stores are kind of like museums."), and a reflection on Warhol's influence in the fashion world by Simon Doonan, Andy Warhol Fashion is a must-have acquisition for anyone with style.
Customer Reviews:
Fabulous Product.......2006-11-29
Beautiful fashion pictures! However, not as much text as expected. A great fashion picture book for adults.
ILLUSTRATING A LIFE MOST ARTFUL: ANDY WARHOL.......2004-11-03
These are the early illustrations from fashion magazines of the `50s, and they are just delightful. Shoes, fans, gloves and other glamorous necessities from the tastemakers of Vogue, Mademoiselle and Harper's Bazaar are full of wit, fun, style and a crazy cartoon-like kookiness that proves irresistible. The preface is written by Simon Doonan, the Creative Director of Barney's New York, who helps place the work squarely in historical perspective. While the drawings are clearly imbued with the unmistakable Warhol sense of fun, they also illustrate a very interesting relationship between what was commercial art and what was to become fine art. These drawings may have been originally done to illustrate articles and advertisements, but that strange, off-center sense of reality that Warhol later brought to his paintings and photographs is clearly present. And clearly still fashionable.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Gift.......2006-10-23
I received this stationary set as a gift, and it's adorable. A great gift idea for the fashionista that has everything!
No soup cans here... .......2005-06-23
Well, the name of this set does say it all. Fashion! That's the theme of this mix & match stationery set. I liked it a bit more than some of the other mix & match stationery sets out there. The paper quality is a teensy bit better with this set as the paper is slightly thicker.
The illustrations are very colorful and pretty, it has drawings and he complements each with colors such as bright blue and fuchsia. The drawings are all bold and enjoyable ranging from a pattern of high-heeled shoes or little kisses to a close-up of a very Warhol-esque face. At the top of each sheet, there are little quotes of Andy's relating to fashion. Very cool for maintaining the overall theme, I think. The different colored-envelopes each have a flap that more or less complements one of the particular sheet designs but of course, as the name suggests, it's all open to a little mix&match. Finally, there are quite a lot of stickers to decorate your mail as your will dictates. They're very pretty too including purses, mannequins, kisses, and oh, they're the clear kind so they look a little bit more distinguished.
All in all, a very good way to spruce up your everyday mail. Get it especially if you're a fan of Andy Warhol or a die-hard fashionista.
Book Description
Perhaps no other artist from the second half of the 20th century is as familiar to the public as Andy Warhol--and his self-portraits can hardly be said to have played a lackluster role with regards to the artist's celebrity. U.S. postage stamp anyone? Occupying a position of central importance in his oeuvre, Warhol's self-portraits also occupy a consistent, long-running one. From the first self-images in gouache painted by 16-year-old Andrew Warhol in the mid-40s to the fright-wig series completed shortly before his death in February 1987, Andy Warhol continually used self-portraiture to reflect on his position and social status as an artist, performing a variety of roles in the process. Yet he never made use of the traditional topos of the artist's self-portrait; his fascination with transience and death is constantly present, as in his other works. Although a seemingly endless number of books have been published on Warhol's various work groups, this is the first monograph devoted exclusively to his self-portraits. The accompanying essays discuss different aspects of the theme and examine Warhol's self-portraits in the light of an expanded concept of the artist's self-portrait in the 20th century.
Book Description
Rarely seen and often created for his own delight, Pop artist Andy Warhol's images of men are among his most personal and sensual work. Collected in book form here for the first time, Andy Warhol Men showcases hundreds of illustrations, paintings, drawings, silkscreens, Polaroid studies, and fine art photographs in a handsome and intimate volume. Mostly nudes, this gallery of delights includes the beautiful boys and drag queens who adorned Warhol's legendary Factory studio, as well as less racy illustrations of notables such as Christopher Isherwood, Truman Capote, and James Dean. Sprinkled with Warhol's perceptively funny observations on love, and a witty reflection on art and desire by Alan Cumming, Andy Warhol Men is a playfully swooning celebration of male beauty.
Customer Reviews:
The Greatness is in the Simplicity.......2006-01-18
Andy Warhol remains a true Icon of the art world. His famous '15 minutes of fame' was a terrific statement, but in Warhol's case his words and his art linger on in museum retrospectives, in art history studies, and in books on photography, fine print making, and art whether drawn, painted, of screened.
This little book is a treasure. From the opening apropos statement by Alan Cumming, the book is devoted to over 250 works of art by Warhol. His line drawings for the most part are undecorated even with cross-hatching: the single continuous line defines the faces, the bodies, the genitalia, the feet, the lips of his models. These are finely reproduced on several different tones of paper, each a full-page bleed. Then along with little quips from his feisty, shy, and sage mouth are his photographs of men including some self-portraits, some of transsexual friends, some of just beautiful male bodies, some of famous men from history. These photographs are at times followed or paired with the subsequent now famous silkscreen interpretations. Some collages and other experiments with imagery complete the set.
By this time most people including the harshest critics have the consensual opinion that Andy Warhol was a significant figure in American art history. This fine book, very beautifully designed by Azi Rad, is a substantial volume of tribute to the simplicity of Warhol's genius. It belongs in the library of every art collector and everyone who appreciates the male form - especially as much as Warhol obviously did! Highly Recommended.
Grady Harp, January 06
A Really Exquisite Book!.......2004-12-22
What a great little book of delights! Here is a really beautiful collection of art by Andy Warhol, many of the works apparently published for the first time. There are color photographs here of men's body parts-- chests, feet, butts, etc.-- a series of color portraits of drag queens labelled "Ladies and Gentlemen", photographs of a few celebrities including Mick Jagger and the artist himself eating a banana. But most of the book is taken up by beautiful line drawings of men-- figures, faces, body parts, even the feet of Christopher Isherwood. Alan Cumming in right on the money in his foreward: "just a simple collection of lines on paper that magically produce a sense memory of something so visceral it can actually arouse." And Mr. Warhol had this thing about body hair! This is a very erotic collection beautifully produced that you will go back to again and again.
