Oprah Book Club® Selection, February 2000: Until Isabel Allende burst onto the scene with her 1985 debut, The House of the Spirits, Latin American fiction was, for the most part, a boys' club comprising such heavy hitters as Gabriel García Márquez, Jorge Luis Borges, and Mario Vargas Llosa. But the Chilean Allende shouldered her way in with her magical realist multi-generational tale of the Trueba family, followed it up with four more novels and a spate of nonfiction, and has remained in a place of honor ever since. Her sixth work of fiction, Daughter of Fortune, shares some characteristics with her earlier works: the canvas is wide, the characters are multi-generational and multi-ethnic, and the protagonist is an unconventional woman who overcomes enormous obstacles to make her way in the world. Yet one cannot accuse Allende of telling the same story twice; set in the mid-1800s, this novel follows the fortunes of Eliza Sommers, Chilean by birth but adopted by a British spinster, Rose Sommers, and her bachelor brother, Jeremy, after she is abandoned on their doorstep.
"You have English blood, like us," Miss Rose assured Eliza when she was old enough to understand. "Only someone from the British colony would have thought to leave you in a basket on the doorstep of the British Import and Export Company, Limited. I am sure they knew how good-hearted my brother Jeremy is, and felt sure he would take you in. In those days I was longing to have a child, and you fell into my arms, sent by God to be brought up in the solid principles of the Protestant faith and the English language."
The family servant, Mama Fresia, has a different point of view, however: "You, English? Don't get any ideas, child. You have Indian hair, like mine." And certainly Eliza's almost mystical ability to recall all the events of her life would seem to stem more from the Indian than the Protestant side.

As Eliza grows up, she becomes less tractable, and when she falls in love with Joachin Andieta, a clerk in Jeremy's firm, her adoptive family is horrified. They are even more so when a now-pregnant Eliza follows her lover to California where he has gone to make his fortune in the 1849 gold rush. Along the way Eliza meets Tao Chi'en, a Chinese doctor who saves her life and becomes her closest friend. What starts out as a search for a lost love becomes, over time, the discovery of self; and by the time Eliza finally catches up with the elusive Joachin, she is no longer sure she still wants what she once wished for. Allende peoples her novel with a host of colorful secondary characters. She even takes the narrative as far afield as China, providing an intimate portrait of Tao Chi'en's past before returning to 19th-century San Francisco, where he and Eliza eventually fetch up. Readers with a taste for the epic, the picaresque, and romance that is satisfyingly complex will find them all in Daughter of Fortune. --Margaret Prior

5 out of 5 stars The western dime novel becomes international literature.......2007-08-16

Joaquin Murieta it seems is the inspiration for a novel about a young girl, young love and 19th century culture in England and
in Chile.
The novelist is a master of plot and characterization who blends understanding of three major cultures: Chinese, English and Spanish-Latin American.
I have read novels by major Americans written in English ( not translated from Spanish) that weren't as well documented or as factual as this one.
There is no doubt that Isabel Allende is probably one of the major popular novelists of our time.
It is a western...
This novel deserves a read!

3 out of 5 stars Gold Rush.......2007-07-26

Eliza is just a tiny baby when she is left in an empty box on the doorstep of Rose and Jeremy Sommers, a Victorian brother and sister living in relative luxury in a British colony in Chile. Rose is a young spinster who plans never to marry. Jeremy also seems destined for bachelorhood, and the two of them compliment each other well, although Rose does long for a child, if not a husband. When the baby is left on their doorstep, Rose insists they keep it and raise it as her own daughter.

So Eliza's young life is pleasant. She has the doting attention of both Rose, who teaches her refinement and culture, and the family's Chilean cook and housekeeper Fresia, who teaches her superstition, herbal remedies and cooking. Eliza is sheltered and pampered and she never thinks to question her place or her future, until she is a teenager and catches sight of Joaquin, a poor worker. It is love at first sight for both young people, and they begin a scandalous and secret affair.

Eliza's first love affair may have burned itself out, but at the height of their passions, the California Gold Rush begins. Chile is closer to California than China and is even closer than much of the United States, so every poor dreamer in the country is sure they can get there first to pick up the gold nuggets everyone says are just lying on the ground. Much of the country's youth is taken with gold fever. Joaquin is no exception, and he soon ships out to find his fortune. Eliza simply cannot do without him, so she stows away on a ship also headed to California, determined to find her lover and intertwine their futures. Nobody seems to have calculated the risk involved in such a move, though, and the devastating losses that all will suffer.

I liked the way this book captured the frenzy of the rush to California, followed by the slower organization of the state into cities devoted to making a living and a life, instead of just mining. However, I thought Eliza's particular experience was very simple, with all sorts of lucky breaks and coincidences that allowed her to escape almost all of the hardship of the Gold Rush.

3 out of 5 stars Chick Book.......2007-06-28

A young girl who travels from Chile to California to found her boyfriend that got her pregnant. Can you say "chick book?" At times I found the culture of Chile interesting, but there was very little of the plot that I found interesting. Another good thing about the book is the many mentions of brothels and women of the night. It does make you wonder if prostitution was so prevalent in California during the gold rush.

4 out of 5 stars Subtle presence of Native themes.......2007-06-12

I wouldn't call "Daughter of Fortune" a Native-themed book because the Native presence is muted. But Eliza's mother is Chilean, so she's part Native. More important, Eliza's upbringing is a tug-of-war between Rose, the Englishwoman who represents intellect, artificiality, and constraint, and Mama Fresia, the Indian woman who represents passion, genuineness, and freedom.

When Eliza escapes to America, the land of opportunity, her Indian side comes to the fore. Like the Californians around her, she learns to eschew antiquated concepts such as honor, propriety, and convention. In other words, she throws off the shackles of European civilization and becomes a "noble savage."

4 out of 5 stars Daughter of Fortune.......2007-05-28

This book was excellent. It was beautifully written and historically intriguing. The story really moved along nicely for about 3/4 of the book. It was the last 1/4 that began to move slowly however. It ended rather anti-climactic with only a partial resolution, which for a story such as it is, might be preferable I suppose.

5 out of 5 stars A Tale of Love and Lost.......2007-08-30

Isabel Allende's A Daughter of Fortune begins slowly but gradually pulls the reader in.

Eliza Sommers is given a life of opportunities when she is taken in by a Victorian spinster. She is given a better life, but leaves all of that when she falls in love. When her lover goes to California during the Gold Rush and Eliza discovers she is pregnant, she leaves Chile in search of her lover.

The voyage and transformation that ensues is captivating and will bring tears to your eyes.

5 out of 5 stars Absorbing.......2007-08-18

A great plot with well-developed characters, educational and rich in historical and social detail. After reading of the wars between the US and Mexico with the acquisition of California in 1850, the opium wars between China and Great Britain around 1839, and the French revolution with the terror of the Napoleonic wars which is mentioned in flashback and considering the present situation of the world the reader discovers why we all can't just get along!!!
Also remarkable is the place of women back then, the plight of newborn baby girls in China and the frequency of natural disasters.Life was surely nasty, brutish and short.
The plot which deals with the foundling child Eliza Sommers taken in by the erratic English woman Rose Sommers is interesting. Eliza's journey to California in search of her lover who had preceded her in search of gold, leads her not only to discover freedom but to find love in an unlikely source. Very well done!

5 out of 5 stars great summer read.......2007-08-10

My book group of course loved this book. Allende takes her time to build the characters and the story (about the first 80 pages) and then you are hooked. Good story, strong characters, very sexual, really tender. We'd recommend it for any book group not hung up on sexual content, language and sometimes brutual scenes.

4 out of 5 stars picaresque novel.......2007-03-16

The first time I saw my mother was the night she died. The second time was at a party in Santa Fe.

After a childhood spent in an institution and a series of foster homes, Avery James has trained herself not to wonder about the mother who gave her up. But her safe, predictable life changes one night when she stumbles upon the portrait of a woman who is the mirror image of herself.

Slowly but inevitably, Avery is compelled to discover all she can about her mother, Isabel. Avery is drawn into complex relationships with the people who knew her mother. As she weaves together the threads of her mother's artistic heritage and her grandmother's skills as a healer, Avery learns that while discovering Isabel provides a certain resolution in her life, it's discovering herself that brings lasting happiness.

4 out of 5 stars Better than Average.......2007-09-27

This is the first of Hendricks' books that I have read. I enjoyed the story line. Some of her descriptions made me read them twice as they were a little over the top. For instance: " Friday night there's a waxing moon, and when I first see it rising up over the hills to hang like a silver apostrophe in the pale blue twilight, I know right away what I have to do." This is a relaxing book to read and I may try another of her books. I am in a book club and this was not on the list. Many of our books are more difficult reads and the subjects depressing. If you want an enjoyable and light read I would recommend this.

3 out of 5 stars Isabel's Daughter.......2007-07-03

I did enjoy it, but thinking about it later I'm not sure why. Judith Hendricks is such a comfortable writer I find myself.... just reading ...... it is comfortable reading her books. I missed the recipes though. I loved Bread Alone and will continue buying her books hoping for another Bread Alone

5 out of 5 stars Another Hendricks must reads........2007-02-21

Great book I waited till I had the time to read it in a weeks time . Her books are hard to put down. I find myself reading at 1:00 a.m.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully emotional, detailed and expressive.......2006-04-13

Not many writers can weave so much emotion into their passages. But Judith Hendricks does this very well. She has combined real, likeable characters, a story packed with emotion, complicated relationships, and incredibly strong, inspiring female characters. The thing that makes this book, and this author, stand out even more is that Judith Hendricks knows the power and magic of female relationships. And she is a genius at portraying these things in words. I really felt like I understood Avery James in ISABEL'S DAUGHTER, I cried for her. But even better, I loved this story of healing and perseverence and the strength that a woman gathers from within herself and from the women in her life.

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking.......2005-12-30

I was a little skeptical at first ... southwestern stories are usually not my chosen genre (I was thinking a little bit more "cowboys" for this one). This book is absolutely wonderful and I read it in one day ... I recommend it to anyone. I loved her work so much I ordered both her others today and can't wait for them to get here!

Book Description

The Portrait of a Lady is the most stunning achievement of Henry James's early period--in the 1860s and '70s when he was transforming himself from a talented young American into a resident of Europe, a citizen of the world, and one of the greatest novelists of modern times.  A kind of delight at the success of this transformation informs every page of this masterpiece.  Isabel Archer, a beautiful, intelligent, and headstrong American girl newly endowed with wealth and embarked in Europe on a treacherous journey to self-knowledge, is delineated with a magnificence that is at once casual and tense with force and insight.  The characters with whom she is entangled--the good man and the evil one, between whom she wavers, and the mysterious witchlike woman with whom she must do battle--are each rendered with a virtuosity that suggests dazzling imaginative powers.  And the scene painting--in England and Italy--provides a continuous visual pleasure while always remaining crucial to the larger drama.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars It's a good portrait.......2007-09-29

I read this, my first H. James novel, on the recommendation of a friend while I was commencing a trip to Rome. It was an excellent choice. I must say I was not entirely on board in the early stages of the book, set in England. Marraige proposals were happening too fast for my taste. Nevertheless, I was pleasantly surprised by the witty repartee, which reminded me much of Wilde. The wit diminishes and the intensity increases on the continent, especially in its Roman locale, and it was here that I found myself much more interested. The book has a soul. Its characters are richly painted and became interesting--I enjoyed them all. The novel also has a beautifully symmetric construction. In its early stages I thought James was trying too hard to perfect his European literary colleagues; by the end, the novel stood on its own. So, despite some minor growing pains, I can recommend and will likely read another by HJ. Peter Washington's introduction in the Everyman edition (James' New York version) is an added benefit.

3 out of 5 stars Fiction writers, nota bene.......2006-06-18

Some fictional works retell the stories of other fictional works but from a different point of view. The retellings may occupy roughly the same time as the story they are retelling. Examples are John Gardner's novel Grendel (Beowulf), Tom Stoppard's play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (Hamlet), and M. Z. Bradley's novel The Mists of Avalon (King Arthur). The retellings may fill in a bit of fictional history that the original story only touches on. Examples are Jean Rhys's novel Wide Sargasso Sea (Jane Eyre) and Haire-Sargeant's H: The Story of Heathcliff's Journey Back to Wuthering Heights (Wuthering Heights). As a subject of such treatments, Portrait of a Lady seems ripe for the picking. Surely Gilbert Osmond and Madame Merle have their own story to tell apart from the events in the novel, and most likely they have their own version of the events that they share with Isabel Archer.

5 out of 5 stars "Money's a horrid thing to follow, but a charming thing to meet.".......2006-01-26

When Isabel Archer, a bright and independent young American, makes her first trip to Europe in the company of her aunt, Mrs. Touchett, who lives outside of London in a 400-year-old estate, she discovers a totally different world, one which does not encourage her independent thinking or behavior and which is governed by rigid social codes. This contrast between American and European values, vividly dramatized here, is a consistent theme in James's novels, one based on his own experiences living in the US and England. In prose that is filled with rich observations about places, customs, and attitudes, James portrays Isabel's European coming-of-age, as she discovers that she must curb her intellect and independence if she is to fit into the social scheme in which she now finds herself.

Isabel Archer, one of James's most fully drawn characters, has postponed a marriage in America for a year of travel abroad, only to discover upon her precipitate and ill-considered marriage to an American living in Florence, that it is her need to be independent that makes her marriage a disaster. Gilbert Osmond, an American art collector living in Florence, marries Isabel for the fortune she has inherited from her uncle, treating her like an object d'art which he expects to remain "on the shelf." Madame Serena Merle, his long-time lover, is, like Osmond, an American whose venality and lack of scruples have been encouraged, if not developed, by the European milieu in which they live.

James packs more information into one paragraph than many writers do in an entire chapter. Distanced and formal, he presents psychologically realistic characters whose behavior is a direct outgrowth of their upbringing, with their conflicts resulting from the differences between their expectations and the reality of their changed settings. The subordinate characters, Ralph Touchett, Pansy Osmond, her suitor Edward Rosier, American journalist Henrietta Stackpole, Isabel's former suitor Caspar Stackpole, and Lord Warburton, whose love of Isabel leads him to court Pansy, are as fascinating psychologically and as much a product of their own upbringing as is Isabel.

As the setting moves from America to England, Paris, Florence, and Rome, James develops his themes, and as Isabel's life becomes more complex, her increasingly difficult and emotionally affecting choices about her life make her increasingly fascinating to the reader. James's trenchant observations about the relationship between individuals and society and about the effects of one's setting on one's behavior are enhanced by the elegance and density of his prose, making this a novel one must read slowly--and savor. Mary Whipple

4 out of 5 stars The Audiobook Is Worth Listening Too If You Have The Adapter!.......2005-10-02

Like the previous reviewer I also have the unabridged audiobook recording put out by Brilliance Audio but I like it, but having the adapter really makes a difference and I listen to most of my audiobooks with headphones anyway using my Walkman and CD/cassette tape boombox. I found my adapter in Barnes and Noble but it can also be found in the company's mail order catalog and online web site. The Catalog is called Audiobookstand and the website is [...]. BTW: You can listen to these audiobooks without an adapter if your car or home stereo receiver, cassette or CD player has balance control and with that you basically just follow the same directions of the adapter. I tried it and it worked fine with no annoying sounds but I did have to adjust the balance a few times until I got it just right! As for the adpater, I personally found investing in it well worth it because I will often use my walkman to listen to audiobooks and because these unabridged audiobooks are pretty inexpensive with prices that range from 10 dollars to around 20 dollars verses companies that offer unabridged audio recordings for the same book at 50 dollars and higher. This audio cassette recording of Henry James' The Portrait of a Lady is read by Laural Merlington who is one of the best readers of audiobooks but even with that said I can understand why the previous reviewer was annoyed about the special adapter thing but I highly recommend this audiobook to anyone who has the BookCassette adapter or a stereo with a fully functioning balance controll knob and I also recommend the paperback book or the hardcover book.

1 out of 5 stars Unabridged cassettes require special adapter.......2005-03-23

This is a review of the unabridged audio cassettes. It would have been nice if the Amazon description had mentioned that these cassettes will not play on a Walkman or other audio player without a special adapter (and the adapter only works with headphones). I have listened to many books on tape but this is the first one that has required an adapter; I have no idea where to purchase the adapter (which appears to be specific to the publisher) and I am not thrilled about doing that to listen to one book, anyway. The tapes will play on a full stereo system with some adjustments, but you have to be able to switch the stereo completely to the left, which results in a really annoying sound.

5 out of 5 stars Ms Cherryh -- Please Write Another!.......2006-11-03

This is one of the books I keep going back to -- and it never disappoints. I think the reason is that love and honor are concepts that can inform our daily lives as well as those of fictional characters. Also -- it's just a great story! Ms Cherryh -- PLEASE WRITE ANOTHER! -- maybe Vanye and Morgaine arrive on Earth..........

5 out of 5 stars Exile's Gate (and the Morgaine saga as a whole).......2006-02-24

In this SF-that-looks-like-fantasy series, the exile Vanye becomes liegeman to the mysterious Morgaine, who travels from world to world closing the Gates between them -- against the violent opposition of her enemies.

This is an interesting series partly because it includes some of the author's earliest work, which has some basic strengths --the characters, the situations they are put in -- but doesn't have the sophistication of her later writing, especially in the worldbuilding. It's good basic fantasy (except that it's really SF) but it shows that there's a learning curve even for the luminaries among us -- a comforting thought for the ranks of the great unpublished.

The final book of the four, Exile's Gate, is the strongest. Vanye and Morgaine, whose fraught allegiance resolves in a partnership that is satisfying but, realistically, doesn't solve their larger problems, are well-developed characters who must make painful moral choices while remaining loyal to one another. The worldbuilding is much stronger than in earlier installments, and I wanted to know more about the qhal, their intricate politics and the warrior Societies. But the qhal are secondary characters, even though they are also well-developed and by the end are demanding a heroic, co-starring role for themselves, and so their culture gets a bit less time than I would have liked. I particularly liked the increasing complexity of the portrayal of the phenomenon by which a person can steal another's body in a Gate; from a simple act of vampiric evil, it evolves through the series into a morally complicated and emotionally involving situation with many potential outcomes. Chei/Gault/Qhiverin is as interesting a character by the book's end as the main characters are, and Hesiyyn isn't far behind.

Fast-paced fight and action scenes add motion to an already dramatic plot throughout the series, and Exile's Gate is no exception.

I highly recommend the series as a whole.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Since GATE OF IVREL........2006-02-23

In this fourth of the Morgaine Saga, Morgaine is starting to come down from her high horse and treat Vanye like an equal. Well, kinda. Sorta. Sometimes. When she feels like it. Other times, not so much. Either way, she is freaking him out.

She and Vanye have rescued a young man from certain death. (Guess whose idea this was.) This man has the same beliefs and superstitions Vanye used to have, which makes Vanye homesick. He also regards Vanye as a witch, the way Vanye used to regard Morgaine. The catch is, Vanye isn't 100% sure the kid is wrong. So this too is freaking him out. (And it's only Chapter Two.)

Cherryh really puts Vanye through the wringer in this one. When I first read this book on my lunch break, many years ago, I actually nearly fainted at my desk at one point. I had to stop reading and breathe for a bit. And really, I'm not the fainting type.

If you have read the earlier books, nothing will hold you back from this last one. If you haven't, then go read GATE OF IVREL, the first and the best of the series. This is only the second best, as a story, because it cannot stand alone the way the first one can. Also, the parts that aren't told from Vanye's POV are FAR less compelling than those that are.

But Vanye himself is as human and compelling as ever, and the way he deals with the continual culture shocks, identity crises, threats of eternal damnation, and hideously no-win moral dilemmas continues to enthrall as the character matures, hardens, and despairs, yet against all odds is still found to be clinging by his fingertips to his faith and decency. Morgaine, likewise, is not chopped liver. Boy, does she know how to turn the tables.

I give this four-and-a-half stars on it's own merits, and five as a sequel. If you liked the earlier ones, it won't disappoint.

            5 out of 5 stars A Great Book.......2004-01-11

I have to say this is one of the best books I have ever read. I read this book before I had ever even heard of the other three books. I was so impressed by how well written it was that I went out and bought the other three the day after I finished it. C.J. Cherryh did a superb job on this book. Very few other stories have drawn me in so completly. Just a great book all around.

            5 out of 5 stars Exil's Gate.......2003-05-23

The novel Exil's Gate by C.J. Cherryh is about an epic journey of Morgine, who is on her way to close the gate of Morond. Many fierce battles take place while she finds and fights her way there. But on her way she meets other characters like Ichandren, Chie ep Kantary, and vayne. Their characters help Morgine to suceed in closing the gate. I rated this novel 5 stars due to its action adventure theme and that its a book that you cant put down. But I would really reccomend this to anyone who wants an adventure.

Fantasy Series. "Scattered about the galaxy were the time-space gates of a vanished but not forgotten alien race.
