A Delightful witty send up of The Old Dark House.......2002-10-19
Cry for the Moon, has widowed Marielle Brandt moving into an apartment house with her small child. Her husband was into big debt for his death and this is the only piece of property left to her. She arrived to find the place like something out of the Adam's Family, nearly falling down and the only thing that is keeping it running is Simon Zebriskie, who has taken on protecting the oddball inhabitants of the ancient building. It is haunted, has the weird crew of misfits, yet Marielle finds Simon and the Adam's Family mansion, her new home and is strangely charmed by it all. As great tribute to the Old Dark House!!
Delightful and fun..........2002-02-19
I just love Anne Stuart!! I thought this was a fun read with great characters and wonderful secondary characters. One of my favorite things about Ms. Stuart is that she always focuses a lot on the extra people in her stories, the neighbors, the sister or brother, the friends. It is such a neat thing and most authors I have read do not do that. In this book, Marielle is a widow gone to live in a "haunted" apartment building. That is where she meets Simon, the somewhat "acting" landlord. And while they continue to fight their feelings for one another, they become best friends. And Marielle finds that the eccentric people living in the building are just as friendly and special and she begins to form strong bonds with them as well. And meanwhile, strange things are happening around the house and one of the psychics in the house performs a seance and Marielle has a minor meeting with a spirit. Or does she?? I highly recommend this book. It is fun and different and I think you'll love it!
comfort book - warm and romantic.......2000-12-07
How can I resist a novel where the surly hero is a DJ who (despite himself) plays "Annie's Song" by John Denver? It's one of my weaknesses and so is this book. Marielle and Simon are soulmates - they just don't know it when they first meet. I find this book very comforting for some reason - probably because it's all about people caring for one another and looking after each other.

No more than your average werewolf tale.......2002-11-10
There's really not a whole heck of a lot you can do with a werewolf tale. Full moon, the change, silver bullets, all that stuff. This short novel by Charles L. Grant is just an average werewolf story told in the traditional style. Regrettably, the book gets off to a very bad start, in my opinion. It was hard to keep the characters straight as I was transported back and forth between them, and I also had trouble picturing the setting of the action in place and time. After about twenty pages, the story settled down into a decent rhythm, and things finally started making more sense to me. It is obvious from the start that the string of murders in town is the work of a werewolf. Basically, you have to wait for the authorities, namely Chief Lucas Stockton, to become convinced of the true nature of the beast. Once that inevitably happens, the only remaining question concerns the identity of the afflicted man. There are a few choices we are given to consider, but I thought the truth was a little obvious long before the conclusion played itself out. This isn't a bad novel, but it isn't a particularly good one either. It can ably serve as a quick diversion, but basically it is a rather forgettable work of fiction.
A simplistic werewolf tale of the old school........2000-05-11
For those of us who grew up (or old) watching all those classic Universal and Hammer films, Charles L. Grant's retro-gothic novels (Dark Cry being part of a "trilogy" of classic monster stories set in his fictional Jersey stomping ground of Oxrun Station) will be something to warm the fan's heart even as it chills the bones, what with all that joyful emphasis on character and atmosphere, mysterious half-explained events, and familiar plots. Horror fans who expect buckets of grue and in your face monster confrontations will just wonder where all the horror is supposed to be.

Great Little Book.......2007-07-24
This book might not be the singular answer to solving the global climate crisis, but it's a fantastic, fun little book with a variety of ideas no matter your commitment or ability.
It's the perfect size for stockings (which is my plan!), but unfortunately also the right size for getting, appreciating, and then losing or forgetting.
Could be fun with kids, and getting them involved in picking something each day or week to focus upon to help save the earth.

Fantastic reference.......2003-07-06
Both beginners and more advanced players should be able to get a lot out of this quality reference work as it offers detailed (yet practical) text, illustrationa and diagrams covering all aspects of the game. The book is considered by most experts in the sport to be among the top two or three instructionals ever published on Squash. It won't make you a championship quality player, but it should help your game no matter what skill level you are currently at.
Good Book on drills.......2002-01-12
I found the drills in this book to be very helpful in improving my game. It is an excellent resource for beginners/intermediate players. The drills are very good for improving accuracy. For those of you willing to impove their game this book is an excellent buy.
A review from squash lover.......2002-01-11
I bought this book to look at the drills and the workouts one needs to do to imporve the oncourt acceleration, endurance and stamina. This books have lot of drills which one can do to improve his or her game. Lot of strokes can be practised by oneself but there are a lot of drills that the book describes which need the help of a partner, which are very good for ball control like playing a game where both partners hit the ball to the back of the court and point is scored if the person hits short of the mid court line. etc., etc.,
In other words this is an excellent for all beginners/ intermediate players.
I'm still spinning wheels on the court.......2001-12-01
I bought this book out of frustration. Unable to beat my partner despite practicing secretly, I was hoping this book may help improve my game. Though it has useful drills and tips, I still cannot beat my partner. Rather than award this book 4 stars and recognize limits of my talent, I hold the author responsible.
This book does offer a lot to an intermediate player who needs to improve their technique. Final analysis: Very useful for the beginner to intermediary category, no revelations for strong intermediates and up.
Be aware that the dimensions of book are similar to a magazine, not something you can shove into your racquet cover.
A basic overview.......2001-05-28
This is a good book for beginners. It covers basic technique and some general court tactics. Squash is a difficult sport to teach via the printed medium.
I have found the best way for intermediate players to improve is to watch live matches, buy or rent video tapings of the pros(and to learn how to juggle).

These Yarrow Sticks Work Very Well.......2000-03-01
I've been using my stalks at home daily since 1997 and another set at work (acupuncture clinic) several times a week since early 1999, both sets without problems. For my small hands, the length is perfect. My acupuncture teacher's hands are quite large but the stalk size is no obstacle to him. I DO treat the stalks gently while casting and take great care every time I handle them. They are, after all, my communication link with the Universe. For casting, I use the "Simple Version of the Yarrow Stalk Oracle" suggested in "The Complete I Jing," by Taoist Master Alfred Huang and the interpretations from "The Pocket I-Ching" by Gary G. Melyan and Wen-kuang Chu. (Excellent study material in Master Huang's interpretations, by the way.) The yarrow set at home rests in a crocheted wrap I made which I use to spread on the table to cast the stalks -- holds the stalks in place during the casting. The set at the clinic is secured in a silk scarf, on which I use to cast them, and the stalks are kept in a specially built semi-open box a patient made. I highly recommend keeping the stalks in a box or having a sturdy wrap around them when not in use. I have given these stalks to friends as gifts. Everyone has reported they liked them.

charles de lint-always awesome.......2005-04-12
I have read just about all of his books, my favorites are still moonheart and his collection of short stories dreams underfoot...and there are all the others...okay do not get me started.
If you have a moment to get to know some vivid gritty characters, turn off the damn tv and pick up one of delints books!!!what are you still doing here?..gogogogogo
Not up to par.......2004-12-15
De Lint came quite recommended by those promoting urban fantasy as an alternative to the Tolkienesque, but in truth, this came as quite a disappointment. This story and its characters lack any serious development. In the first eight pages of text, de Lint introduces Caitlin Midhir, Albert Cousins, Peter Baird, Ben Summerfield, Mick Jennings, Becki Bones, Debbie Mitchell, Andy Barnes, Farley O'Dennehy, Stella Sidney, and Rick Kirby. In eight pages, it simply can't be done with any depth. The reader ends up having to write down a list of names with an attribute tacked onto it just to keep them straight. Level of detail problems continue to plague the book, with mentions of rock groups, streets, and authors reading more like name-dropping or list-making than substance. It ends up feeling empty, like the bare bones of a story. I think those recommending this are more in love with the idea of moving beyond the limitations (and imitations) of Tolkien than they are in telling a good tale. In many ways, this is not quite up to the literary standards of Terry Goodkind, who, with all his trite stereotypes, also fails to be a fantasy master, but he's at least a storyteller with excellent pacing.
An amazing tale..very dark.......2003-09-04
This was my first De Lint book way back in the 1980's, it is still one of his best to me alongside Moonheart and Memory & Dream.
De lint has a darkness in some of his best books, I'm not horror fan but his works have just enough magic and beauty to not read like a horror book. But they do have a deep and frightening darkness...Caitlin's enemy, the creature that steals her dreams is a brutal monster and there are some very scary scenes in this book.
But in the end the entire tale is soo engrossing I can't put it down. Sadly many of his more recent books lack that depth, or maybe I'm just older and less inclined to be taken in by them..and yet I can still read this book and other older De Lint and be drawn in as before.....
What De Lint does when he is truly inspired can only be called true magic...if you want that kind fo magic read this, Moonheart and Memory and Dream...but be warned they are not for children nor readers who do not like some truly, deeply, dark evil in their books.
Scattered and empty.......2003-05-09
Caitlin Midhir is a popular author of fantasy novels, but unlike most writers she actually has an answer to the frequently-asked question, "where do you get your ideas?" When she sleeps, Cat travels to a place she calls Otherworld, where the characters in her stories are real, and so she makes her living off the tales she brings back. That is, until a creature called Lysistratus -- a psychic vampire who feeds on dreams -- is attracted by the vivid nature of Cat's and steals them away. She may lose more than a source of income as a result.
YARROW's story is scattered among a cast that is larger than it needs to be, giving background on those characters that has little relevance, and generating subplots that never come to fruition, while the book's antagonist goes sadly underdeveloped. As a result, events that are important have little impact. The story doesn't really get off the ground until the final few chapters and even then, barely so. In the end, nothing particularly interesting happens. This isn't just a light read; it's hardly there at all.
Another good yarn from Charles de Lint.......2003-04-21
The book starts with an interesting question that forms the basis of the plot: Where do writers get their ideas? For the heroine, Cat Midhir, those ideas come from her dreams. So what happens when the dreams stop? That's what "Yarrow" is all about.
I did find the first part a little bit slow. I thought there were too many scene shifts, and introductions to a lot of characters who turned out to be little more than scenery in the end. I felt that these minor characters were developed almost at the expense of some of the other characters who should have been given more space. Case in point: Kothlen. I would have liked to see his character developed more, even in flashbacks, so that when Cat loses him, we don't have to be told how awful she feels; we should be able to feel it for ourselves.
Other than that, de Lint has woven a wonderful story. I liked Tiddy Mun, Cat's little gnome friend, and the villain, Lysistratus, was deliciously formidable. I highly recommend this book to fans of Charles de Lint who may not have read this earlier piece of urban fantasy.
Book Description
Puff, the Magic Dragon is simply one of the most beloved songs of all time—a classic that’s become as much a part of the childhood experience as Mother Goose and fairy tales. Yet singer/songwriter Peter Yarrow and co-composer Lenny Lipton have never allowed a picture book adaptation of this magical tale…until now. With Yarrow’s and Lipton’s blessing, Puff, Jackie Paper, and the land of Honalee finally live on the page. The exquisite package includes a cloth case with a tipped-in illustration and an embossed jacket with foil touches, as well as an exclusive CD featuring not only Puff, but several other songs performed by Yarrow, his daughter Bethany, and cellist Rufus Cappadocia. This is a publishing event sure to attract broad attention and please Puff’s many fans.
In richly-hued paintings of the deepest sea blues and greens, Puff and his friend Jackie Paper frolic in the land of Honalee—traveling in a fantastic boat with billowed sails, climbing red castle stairs onto a balcony to meet with noble kings and princes, and watching pirate ships lower their flags for the roaring dragon. Artist Eric Puybaret has brought an entire magical world into being with enthralling landscapes, color, and characters. And everyone will love the way the art cleverly turns the song’s end, which at first seemed so sad, into a surprising and joyful moment.
Best of all—this is only the first of many more collaborations with Peter Yarrow to come!
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book.......2007-10-10
This book is simply brilliant. It's great to introduce and continue this song into another generation, and the brilliant images are an excellent representation of the lyrics. I especially like the last few pages, which does a simple, yet masterful job of preserving the song's ending yet conveying Puff exists for future generations.
a magical book.......2007-10-09
It's great to see the story of our favorite magical dragon in print, finally! Beautiful pictures, the kids absolutely love it. They can't get enough of the music on the CD, either, and neither can I!
Breathraking!!!!.......2007-09-28
Absolutely beautiful. I love the illustrations. The CD is a bonus and I will be reading this book to my grandchild while the CD plays in the background. This song has always brought tears to my eyes and I treasure this book.
Absolutly gorgeous!.......2007-09-17
This book came quickly, and it is sooo beautiful. The CD is such a nice bonus. I couldnt be more pleased.
Gorgeous.......2007-09-13
I looked for this book specifically because my 2-year-old son loves books that can be sung to him. It arrived two days ago, and I could not be more pleased! The text is simply the lyrics, no more, no less----perfect! And the illustrations are elegant and enchanting, simple, clear and inviting! I must add that I was especially pleased that the illustrator gave the rather sad ending to the lyrics a very hopeful, touching, and I believe true-to-the-spirit of the song, twist! Lovely! I will say that the CD with the book is only fair---I recommend the Peter, Paul & Mommy edition (also available through Amazon, I believe). Enjoy!
