Book Description
Ada Ruth's mama must go away to Chicago to work, leaving Ada Ruth and Grandma behind. It's war time, and women are needed to fill the men's jobs. As winter sets in, Ada Ruth and her grandma keep up their daily routine, missing Mama all the time. They find strength in each other, and a stray kitten even arrives one day to keep them company, but nothing can fill the hole Mama left. Every day they wait, watching for the letter that says Mama will be coming on home soon. Set during World War II, Coming On Home Soon has a timeless quality that will appeal to all who wait and hope.

Deeply moving!.......2007-07-20
A deeply moving story of love between a child and her mom.
Drawings are pieces of art.
I read it to my 5 and [...]daughters... supposedly! I enjoyed it much more than they did.

Coming On Home Soon
By Jacqueline Woodson Illustrated by E.B. Lewis
War ruins everything! At least that's what Ada Ruth thinks.
The book Coming On Home Soon is about a little girl named Ada Ruth. Her mom has to go get a job far away to get more money while World War II is going on. Sad Ada Ruth has to stay with her Grandma.
Ada Ruth is determined to keep writing to her mom even though she is not writing back. I think this book is really good but is also sad. I would recommend this book to people who are close with their family.
I think Jacqueline Woodson is a fabulous author and E.B. Lewis did a great job on the paintings. If you had or even have a loved one in war you should read this book!

Heart Breaking and Heart Warming .......2005-09-11
Coming on Home Soon is a wonderful story about a young girl Ada Ruth dealing with separation from her mother. The story is set in a time of war and her mother leaves to find work in Chicago. Ada Ruth meanwhile stays at home with her grandmother and they both miss mama very much. While waiting for a letter from mama saying she is coming on home soon a small surprise arrives at their door. This surprise helps Ada Ruth and grandma cope with the emptiness they feel in their hearts. Finally Ada Ruth and grandma receive a letter that mama is coming on home soon.
This story is heart breaking because you can feel the sadness in Ada Ruth's heart. She misses her mother terribly and she waits so patiently for her return. Finally when mama returns home the story becomes a heartwarming reunion.
A warm and reassuring masterpiece.......2005-08-09
This marvellously written and invitingly illustrated picture book is already a favorite. The spare, meaningful story coupled with the expressive paintings tell a story that is at the same time filled with tension and uncertainty, along with love and assurance. We know that Mama's decision to journey up to Chicago to work on the railroad was a hard one to make, and we know that Ada Ruth and Grandma will have a hard and uncertain time in her absence. We also know that Mama will return, and that there will be joy in their tiny home when she does. The final illustration, showing Mama's back as she heads toward the house, warms the heart; you can almost feel the hugs that will begin as soon as she walks in the door.
Jacqueline Woodson knows just how to tug at the heartstrings. When Mama's letter arrives, after so many days of the mailman bypassing the house, there is almost breathless anticipation as Grandma whispers, "Thank you, Lord." At this point as I'm reading the book to my kids, I have to stop and compose myself. This is a powerful book that demands to be read again and again. My daughter is constantly asking to read "the book where Mom gets a job." I eagerly pick it up and pull her onto my lap. And we hug. "Thank you, Lord."
Coming On Home Soon-to teach with!.......2005-07-05
I purchased this book because The Other Side is by far my favorite book to teach my elementary students with. We read it at least five times a year and each time we are able to gain a deeper understanding. Jacqueline Woodson and her illustrator have created another book I will use over and over. Coming On Home Soon is a great story that will allow me to discuss history, letter writing and many comprehension strategies with my students!
Book Description
In his latest book, Michael Barber takes a detailed look at the book of Revelation and its rich tapestry of prophecy, history, and biblical allusion. Verse by verse, Coming Soon unravels the hidden threads of meaning in the Book of Revelation, all the while celebrating this beautiful and glorious vision of God.
Customer Reviews:
Coming Soon.......2007-05-16
The book is an excellent study of the book of revelations. It is direct and to the point. It is easy to read and understand. My only concern would be that the study questions are not as thought provoking as I like in a bible study.
Great Catholic prospective .......2007-01-06
As a Catholic Christian you only hear the Christian prospective on the "end times, rapture, mark of the beast, the whore of Babylon, the four horsemen (not the wrestlers)...etc". Catholic theologian Michael Barber has done an excellent job explaining what each on of these (and more) mean along with there implications in our life time. I highly recommend this book along with Dr. Scott Hahn's Lamb Supper. CATHOLICS: "ALWAYS BE READY TO GIVE AN EXPLANATION TO ANYONE WHO ASKS YOU FOR A REASON FOR YOUR HOPE ...
1 Peter 3:15-17
Finally a consistent and logical commentary on the Apocalypse.......2006-04-26
The author gives a consistent commentary on the literal meaning of Revelation and a good explanation of the spirtual senses (i.e the loving moral view, a faithful analogical/typological view and a hopeful anagogical view.) Particular care for the liturgical elements in the book and their relation with the Divine Liturgy (the Roman Rite Mass) is developed and applied, showing the biblical basis for the New Testament Church's Liturgy.
My only criticism of this book is that Mr. Barber sometimes doesn't develope the relationship between some things as strongly as I think the text indicates. For exmaple the releationship between Jerusalem and Rome in Revelation 17 is connected much stronger in my view than in Michael's.
Book Description
Wars and rumors of wars, famines, plagues, and earthquakes. These are the biblical signs. All of them are realities of planet earth in our day. Is Jesus coming back soon? Did Jesus provide an exact, predictable scenario as so many modern prophecy writers advocate? The answer to these questions will shock the majority and ambush the sentries of the end-times quo. The question on the minds of believers has always been: Is Jesus coming soon? A Great little book to put in the hands of someone who is beginning to study biblical prophecy. Possibly, you would be that person.
Customer Reviews:
Everyone should read this book.......2007-03-05
For the record I'm pretty sure that Amazon.com's listing of the page numbers is wrong, this book is more than 48 pages.
In any case, this book is great and I think everyone should read it. It's a fairly basic introduction to eschatology based mostly on Matthew 24, but what you read here may very well totally change your thinking on the subject. This book is completely different than the "Left Behind" / "Late, Great Planet Earth" type sensationalism that unfortunately dominates eschatology these days.
Maybe this book should be titled (or subtitled) "Why Everything you Know about Eschatology is Wrong" or something to that effect because there's so much confusion on the topic. In any case, DeMar's answer to the title question is "no, Jesus is probably NOT returning soon." He shows that the Bible doesn't give us ANY signs leading up to the Second Coming (so not even Hal Lindsay knows the day or the hour, or even the week or month!), that Matthew 24 has absolutely nothing to do with the Second Coming, and that the Great Tribulation already happened. Not only does he show these from Matthew 24, he shows that his position is actually more in sync with church history than the "Left Behind" type eschatology (which can only be traced back to the 1830's; partial preterism, however, can be traced back way further. I've traced it back at least as far as Eusebius and it probably predated him).
I strongly recommend this little book, especially for those who are confused about eschatology. Or for those who think they know what the Bible teaches about eschatology or are absolutely convinced that those things I listed above are wrong. I would still suggest you read the book, as, even if you don't agree with the conclusion in the end, you will still find it challenging.
I found this book a great alternative to the fanciful and speculative end-time sensationalism that so dominate eschatology today. DeMar's main concern here is how dispensational eschatology is crippling Christianity by destroying peoples' willingness to do long-term planning and engage the culture in any meaningful way, not to mention how dispensationalism's constant date-setting continues to undermine Christianity's credibility. Keep this in mind: every date set up this point has one thing in common - THEY HAVE ALL BEEN WRONG. Dispensationalist prophecy "experts" have CONSISTENTLY been getting it wrong for a VERY long time, and yet people still listen to them in spite of their bad track record. Not only have they always been wrong, but every generation has been using the exact same Bible verses to justify the idea that Jesus is returning in their generation.
In any case, read this book. You won't regret it.
Book Description
In this novelistic romp that is by turns hilarious and brilliant, John Barth spoofs his own place in the pantheon of contemporary fiction and the generation of writers who have followed his literary trailblazing. Coming Soon!!! is the tale of two writers: an older, retiring novelist setting out to write his last work and a young, aspiring writer of hypertext intent on toppling his master. In the heat of their rivalry, the writers navigate, and sometimes stumble over, the cultural fault lines between print and electronic fiction, mentor and mentee, postmodernism and modernism.
Customer Reviews:
Fermata.......2005-12-06
It seems like this was to be M. Barth's last book, and it does indeed have that Bethovenesque coda quality to it. The Author is a character in the book, and retires near the beginning. Coming Soon! a Narrative also revisits the topic of his first novel, and has a young author in it which is ostensibly writing perhaps the novel you are reading and is referencing that Show Barge novel. This book is full of quirky little self-referencial games, and seems also to revel in their unfolding. Obviously, M. Barth is still enjoying the game he helped to create in the world of fiction.
But the redeeming part of Comng Soon! is the story, which is rich in substance and full of twists. Barth also tells it with an almost mystical edge, seeing his Chesapeake stomping grounds as grounds for a quasi-fairytale. Also the distinction between the two main voices of the novel are quite fun, and Barth is impressive in pulling off not only the youthful exuberence of the Hopkins narrator, but also his literary inexperience and decadence. A thoroughly enjoyable book.
Coming Soon!!!.......2004-12-18
Coming Soon!!! (Or End Time, or The New Show) is a joyous post-modern romp, a witty, intelligent mash of ideas hovering around the central conceit of a showboat, an author, and another author.
The plot is difficult to explain. John Barth - the author - wrote, as his first book, The Floating Opera, a novel that was loosely about The Original Floating Opera, a showboat on the Chesapeake. Johns Hopkins Johnson is an aspiring young author, and for his master's writing thesis, he wishes to create a sequel to The Floating Opera, a sequel that involves Johns writing his version of the sequel, and John Barth - the fictional character - writing another at the same time, in a competition. John Barth (A) reads this thesis submission and is intrigued, deciding that he would like to write the same novel, in a competition as well. So. We have the real author writing a story where the author 'John Barth' is writing a sequel to his previous novel while a young wannabe author attempts it as well, and while this is happening, a young wannabe author is writing a sequel to John Barth's novel while a character of John Barth is doing the same. Confusing.
But it isn't, really. Barth manages to handle this story-within-a-story gimmick quite well, and in fact he does it in a few other ways on top of that. At the beginning of the real, physical novel, we are assuming that we are reading the Novel Emeritus' - the real John Barth - version, but by the end of the novel, there have been enough scattered hints to suggest that maybe Johns Hopkins Johnson won the challenge, and we are actually reading his novel. Maybe it is both? The question is never conclusively answered, and couldn't be, really, as the answer would lie in the universe outside the novel.
Post-modern plot aside, Barth absolutely revels in playing with the English language. He capitalises words to add emphasis, combines words, rambles on, inserts commentary about his own personal life, et ceteras, abbreviates and just has fun: 'Detour now, is it, O Opter of the Options, Clicker of the Clicker, Mastress of the Might Mouse? Detour it is, then, even as Mlle Sherry Singer directed back there in (my) Chap. 1, 'Commencement' - Where last we saw your Novelist Aspirant & Apprentice narrator hip-hopping south and east and south again on wings of desire,...' and so on and so on. There are puns: On the The Original Floating Opera II, there is a character, the Phantom. Phantom of the Opera. Get it? Hilarious. Well, it is, in the narrative structure that Barth has created. He throws in the the elements for a joke, then, several paragraphs later, puts it all together. If you can catch it before he does, you win, if not, you get to giggle at his cleverness.
The plot largely focuses on The Original Floating Opera II, with expositionary detours of what the Novelist Emeritus (Barth) is doing over the five years of the story, and then the Novelist Aspirant (Hopkins) gets a turn, introducing us to his love, Sherry, his parents, his ideas and dreams, and of course, the showboat. They both write the same chapters, a '1995.1' and a '1995.2', but there are little 'off-story' sections as well, including a Cast of Several, which explains all of the characters and their roles. 47 pages into the novel.
The novel can be a difficult read. Barth is very, very clever, and he knows enough of the English language and grammatical structure that he can mix it up and mess it about with ease. And he does. If rambling, largely irrelevant plots coupled with trickery for trickery's sake and a penchant for look-at-me cleverness is not your idea of a rip-roaring novelistic experience, then pass by the pastiche of witticisms. If it is, then settle down and enjoy the work of a master at the top of his game.
Wow!.......2004-06-20
As always, I'm blown away and inspired when I read Barth. If I can ever do anything half as well as he can write, I'll be a success! I was sad at the end to think that this might be his final offering (although you can spend a lifetime re-reading his work), but now that the collection 10 Nights and a Night is out I'm over the heartbreak. I think my next readerly Voyage will be back to The End of the Road and On With the Story (again)!
Good ol' Barth.......2003-05-15
I wonder about that "post-modern" label. Why can't stories be left to stand or fall on their own merits? I'll leave the categorization to the academics. I'm just a guy who likes a good read, and this is one. Mr. Barth returns to showboats several decades after "The Floating Opera," with a little reluctance, apparently. Sometimes it seems the story is nothing more than a series of devices stacked upon each other like a house of cards, but Mr. Barth manages to keep the flimsy structure from collapsing under its own weight. Much like "The Last Voyage of Somebody the Sailor," Mr. Barth starts off unevenly (perhaps because of the strange stage he has to set), then really takes off with a great middle. The story ultimately meanders (like a tidewater creek?) and then just sort of peters out. Still, this is a very worthwhile read, if only for the world-weariness of our humble narrator.
Still Barth, after all these years..........2002-08-07
...which is all you need to know.
The man has nearly half a century of literary history, all of it jam-packed with the most mind-bending experimental and metafictional gymnastics the literary community has ever had the delight to call its own.
Consider that for a moment: half a century. That piece of knowledge in hand, you know right off you can disregard out of hand the one-star review of any reader calling this yet "another bloated and tiresome (Barth) book." If one is well read in the Barth canon, and has found it wanting, same one could easily have given Barth a pass thousands of pages ago. Barth has never pretended to be anything less than egomaniacal and pretentious. And for that, I thank him, for he stands out magnificently from the body of even the postmodern pantheon. Some people simply don't like, don't appreciate, or don't "get" Barth. It should take only one book to figure out if you're among them.
Then, what of the book's own merits? I tell you this: this is by no means the place to begin your journey into Barth if you've not read him before. In fact, to read this anyplace among them but last (assuming you're made of stout engouh stuff to make it through them all) would be tragic. It's a 300 page, self-indulgent, metafictional going-away party. It's not merely writing about writing; it's writing about Barth's strange and fascinating literary journey. And what a journey it's been.
Ere you pass the threshold, be prepared to accept the following: this book will be pretentious; it will be literary for literary's sake; it will drip with self-reference; it will be twisted, perverse, convoluted, and obscure. If you're familiar enough with Barth to have made it through Floating Opera, Sot-Weed, Giles, Funhouse, et al, and to have loved the whole mad lot, then you're certain to enjoy this bizarre farewell from the master manipulator. If you haven't, don't bother.

Good for all Christians.......2000-06-22
I thought this was a good book, even if you are not Catholic. Ralph Martin uses many examples from the Bible to illustrate the Catholic perspective on the Second Coming. The one downside to this book is that, at some points, it can be little bit difficult to understand for younger readers. This was a good book!

Fantastic first year contracts book!.......2007-07-31
Bow down to this man's UCC 2-207 chapter for it helped me score the highest grade on my Contracts exam. His flow charts, his hypos, and his answers make this book one of the Greats in the E&E series. Look out Professor Glannon ;)
No UCC.......2007-05-14
My contract class may have been a little unusual because we spent so much time on the UCC, but there was so little UCC in this book, I didn't find it very useful at all. My professor also spent a fair amount of time on the Restatement Second of Contracts, which is also covered only minimally in this book. I'm sure if your class is very common law and case driven, this book would be fine, but if you spent any significant time on the UCC of RS(2d), this may not be the book for you.
Between Corbin & Emanual.......2007-04-25
Some students prefer the classic hornbooks while others opt for Emanual. However, more and more students are leaning toward Examples and Explanations. It might be just what you're looking for.
not as good as other Examples and Explanations.......2007-03-18
I had a great experience with the Civil Procedure Examples and Explanations, and was expecting a similar experience with Contracts. Unfortunately, this book was not nearly as easy to understand. If I have a question in Contracts, I cannot refer to this book as I could in Civil Procedure.
Dense, but good.......2007-02-23
This has a different feel from Glannon's CivPro book in this series. This book has A LOT more substance. But I'm loving it. Adding an 800 page supplement to your textbook reading can be tough, but if you can manage it, I've found it well worth it.

Excellent Book.......2002-06-15
I always need a good professional book to use as reference in my work and this one is excellent. I was impressed with easy to manage chapters and the concise way in which it explained contracts and so forth. There are a bevy of examples of the work so that for whatever kind fo situation one may find one's self there is help.
I do paralegal work with an eye towards law school and I also own a small business so books that I purchase for professional reasons must be flexible and strong enough to serve multiple purposes with me, this one does.
I was also lucky enough to get it at (less than) the original textbook price. I do purchase things at the full Amazon price but I have found teh used service an excellent resource for obtaining high end merchandise at a great discount.
