Fabulous!.......2005-03-29
This is a fabulous introductory how-to book on Chinese calligraphy. The text and examples are large, the overall presentation of the material is clear and artful. Using this book is really easy.
The publisher's description says:
- Unique, systematic teaching method builds
from basic to advanced brushstrokes,
enabling you to create new words with each
brushstroke you learn
- Two fold-out cover flaps carry key
information to remind you of the anatomy
of each character as you progress
- Organized into a series of lessons and
projects which, as they are worked
through, build the reader's knowledge
- Includes beginner-level projects for
greeting cards, decorative ceramics, and
calligraphic artwork
Some 100 characters are covered. There are chapters on preparing the brushes, holding and loading the brush, wrist and elbow movements, pressing and lifting the brush, various brushstrokes, making a traditional writing book, a greeting card, the five golden rules of Chinese calligraphy, mounting a xuan paper artwork, and more. An appendix shows where Chinese calligraphy supplies can be obtained in the U.S and U.K., each listing has a website.
I happily give this book a full five stars.

Not that easy.......2007-02-25
I found the layout really confusing. Also if you are a beginner I would say this is not for you. It doesn't contain much "instruction." I would suggest "The Calligrapher's Bible" instead.
Not a beginner's book.......2006-02-07
I'm trying to teach myself this beautiful art. This book is certainly not for the beginner. The concept of a new alphabet each week and weekly projects is a great one, however there isn't enough instruction on materials or form to make it very helpful to those of us new to this art. I'll keep it for reference but must continue my search for a great teaching tool.
My Least Favorite Book on Calligraphy.......2005-01-03
I was given 3 books on Calligraphy, as a Christmas present from my daughter, and this book is at the bottom of the list.
It does contain many different fonts, and the idea of having a practice lesson every week for a year is a novel idea indeed. However, I found this book disorganized, and try to do the lessons with one arm trying to hold the book flat.
Wonderful book.......2004-02-10
This book is more complete than I expected and it is written in such a way that you are eager at trying your hand at the next alpahbet. Great for the person who already knows how to handle the pens.
Very helpful.......2002-10-12
Nicely-formatted book with a gazillion scripts. Made me get out my calligraphy pen immediately and start practicing, which is really the name-of-the-game to developing this delightful and useful skill. Knock your friends out and write in some of these beautiful hands!

As easy as it claims.......2007-03-09
This book is great with its workbook format. It really did make it easy to learn the style of calligraphy it teaches. Its format makes it so simple that all you need is a calligraphy marker or pen. The rest is all in the book, from how to instructions, to tracing pages, to practicing, and to decorative projects. I really enjoyed it and also gave a copy to a 10 year old who equally enjoyed it.
Content needs updating..........2005-07-28
I have this workbook and I feel that the content needs to be updated. I photocopy the exercise pages and others but I would prefer a different workbook for Calligraphers. I don't use carpenters pencils...but my Sheafer Fountain Callgraphy pen broad nib works with this book. I think for what I paid for it that I could have gotten a better deal elsewhere.
Amateur!.......2003-04-03
I am so tired of seeing calligraphy "how-to" books put out by folks who don't really have the background and knowledge, but I guess it makes them money. I wish the author would take the time to truly learn good calligraphy letterforms before passing hers on to the unsuspecting public.
YIKES!.......2000-08-28
Not the greatest letterforms for beginners to be looking at... don't use this... please!

The best you will find on the market about hand lettering.......2006-02-01
This book is a dream for anyone who had longed for beautiful handwriting and how to execute it. Debra does a wonderful job of presenting numerous alphabets and even shows how simple little embellishments drawn all around your writing can be. It is the best money I've ever spent and it covers everything. Buy this book and you own't be disappointed. I'd rate it 8 stars but 5 is the highest rating.
Easy to Use, Even for Beginners!.......2005-09-20
This was the first lettering book that I've used and it was very easy to follow. It's a great tool, even for beginners!
CREATIVELY INSPIRATIONAL!!!!.......2004-09-26
Debra's creative abilities are very inspirational. Calligraphy and other creative lettering seems so intimidating until you delve into her easy techniques. I read this book cover to cover as soon as I received it! I buy lots of idea books and I have never gotten a lettering book with this much jam packed information! You get tons and tons of new alphabets and loads of scrapbooking, home decorating and crafting ideas. Debra is the Creative Lettering Queen!
Easy to use handlettering book.......2004-09-25
The tips and tricks were easy to follow. It makes lettering your own titles a snap! Saves you a TON of money on stickers, and computer font programs.
Best Lettering Book Ever!.......2004-09-25
When I got my copy of this fantastic book on hand lettering, I sat down and read it cover to cover. It is probably the best resource for hand lettering I have ever owned! I teach classes at a local scrapbook store, and with the author's permission, I have been teaching from her book. Her tried and true method is received with enthusiasm and excitement. The students cannot believe how hand lettering can be so easy! I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to improve their hand writing and hand lettering skills.

Customer Reviews:
Not a calligraphy manual, but..........2003-09-10
...still an enjoyable read for the price.
A good portion of the writing samples included in Mr. Bickham's book were not, in fact, considered calligraphy in their time, but rather to exemplify legible and easy styles of business hand, intended, as per the book's subtitle, for clerks and others whose jobs necessitated a good deal of writing and record-keeping, prior to the era of the typewriter. To the reviewer who complained of the cursive scripts being illegible, try reading handwritten cursive a bit more often; the scripts do retain certain archaisms such as the extended S, but are not significantly different from, for instance, the Spencerian system of cursive penmanship, which dominated American schools throughout the 19th century. If you want illegible (to the modern reader's eye) calligraphy, try picking your way through an illuminated medieval manuscript.
That said, this caveat must be included: this book does -not- give explicit instruction on how to reproduce the styles, it is merely a collection of the best samples-- it's best for those who already have some grasp of some form of calligraphy or antiquated penmanship. For those -looking- to learn, I would recommend Theory of Spencerian Penmanship as a starting point, at the very least. For those who have no interest in taking up calligraphy and merely enjoy looking at elegant handwriting, it's a delightful curiosity and memento of the vanished culture of penmanship; much of the writing samples given are quite simply beautiful to look at; though this particular calligraphy enthusiast would hope that admiration of beautiful writing would spur more people to take up interest in a now-esoteric art.
Penmanship Made Easy -- Not!.......2002-07-26
I have trouble calling this a book. It's a bound collection of calligraphy, and not very good calligraphy at that. Many letters are unreadable. Penmanship should be to help communicate by written word. This book is not helpful unless you're experienced with calligraphy.
Fine examples of formal handwriting in the 1700's.......1998-10-30
Mr. Bickham was an 18th century engraver and calligrapher. Although the book (orignally published ca 1733) begins with a set of rules on how to form letters, these rules and the book's examples are best studied by an experienced calligrapher. This is NOT a beginner's book. But it is delightful for those who like to examine the formal hands of nearly three centuries ago. The examples are not just alphabets but writing samples. Fancy "Content alone is true happiness; or the Country Lass"? How about "Beauty's a Fair But Fading Flower"? There are many calligraphic examples from copperplate to blackhand. As the gentlelman says, everything the "young clerk's assistant" might need.

Customer Reviews:
Go ahead and put your boots on the coffee table!.......2007-01-02
Big rich photo detail (that many baby-boomers will appreciate.) The cowoby boots in this book are the closest you'll ever find to life-size.
Tyler Beard asked America's finest bootmakers to send him their most spectacular boots...and they did, many remarkable pairs were made especially for this book. These new and vintage cowboy boots range from wowzie-zowie to "museum-quality." No pair could be counted as plain, or the least bit ordinary.
This book is a must for every collector. Tyler gives an unmatched, detailed history of cowboy boots and portrays the life and lore of America's top bootmakers. (A few who have since retired or passed on.) This book is one of my favorites.
Highly recommended for any with an interest in cowboy culture or boots.......2006-06-23
Cowboy boots aren't just your functional black or brown work boot; but can be works of art in themselves: just take a look at Tyler Beard's ART OF THE BOOT for evidence! In 1992 THE COWBOY BOOT BOOK was published to celebrate this fact; since then the number of boot-makers around the country has nearly doubled. ART OF THE BOOT combines Jim Arndt's lovely color photos throughout with in-depth surveys of the companies and bootmakers involved. Highly recommended for any with an interest in cowboy culture or boots.

Book Description
“Covers the fundamentals of shoemaking, including pictures, sidebars with flair...and great instructions for techniques. One after another, the approximately 30 patterns proceed—each one more appealing than the last—from an apple pie-color sandal to a Sante Fe-like desert sunrise moccasin. Templates appended.”—Booklist. “Excellent book.”—Quick & Easy Crafts.
Customer Reviews:
Worth buying directly from the author.......2007-09-09
From the book you learn to make simple flat to low-heeled shoes. Each shoe comes with a pattern and exact description how to enlarge it for your shoe size. The instructions are basic and not always easy to understand, but the book is a good primer. The book is out-of-print but available for $25 directly from the author over the Internet simpleshoemaking.com. The book is black and white, with color photographs on the cover and worth its price. It is in no way worth the ridiculous price asked by second-hand dealers.
I also recommend "Make Your Own Shoes" by Mary Wales Loomis, which shows how to make higher-heel elegant ladies' shoes from fabric on your sewing machine. And "Handmade Shoes for Men" by Laszlo Vass, which shows shoemaking in great color photographs, but has no patterns.
Looks good- impossible to follow.......2006-04-19
This book contains some very pretty pictures and cute useless information but when it come to actually using it the instructions that are provided on how to create a basic pattern and size the shoes you are making are almost impossible to follow! The instructions sometimes even refer you to further instructions ("see page 116" for example) that are not actually there! The book is well presented so it looks like everything should be in order but when you actually really try to put it into practice as I have tried to do (for two days of my holidays!) it just doesn't add up. I have read some other reviews that actually commend the book; the only explainations that I can think of for this is that: 1. the reviewers haven't actually tried following the instructions to make shoes, 2. they are relatives of the author and are trying to promote the book, 3. they have a completely different copy to the one I have.
An interesting and informative book!.......2003-06-25
I came across this book quite by accident, and what a happy accident it was! I haven't yet made any of the shoe projects in the book, but I have read through everything, and do feel that I will be able to achieve some good results with Sharon Raymond's instructions.
The tidbits of shoe trivia scattered throughout the book are truly delightful!
Surprising!.......2003-01-13
I bought this book thinking it would be a useful tool when creating shoes for stage productions. I didn't really think the end result would be "good enough" for everyday wear. But I was wrong.
This book is really pretty amazing. I would have thought a host of expensive and hard-to-find tools and materials would have been necessary to create "real" shoes, but that's not necessarily true, as laid out in this book. Sure, if you want leather shoes (as opposed to fabric), it will cost a little, but you can make one of the more simple designs in this book and not have to invest a lot of dough. The author even suggests taking the finished upper portion of your shoe to a shoe repair shop to have soles put on it...Sound wonderful to me, although I haven't tried to find a shop locally to see if that's really do-able.
At any rate, if you want to make serious shoes, this book is definitely for you. And if you just want costume shoes, you can take the basic principles found in this book and do that, too.
An updated book on an ancient craft.......2001-10-17
Go ahead - just TRY to find a book on hand-crafting sandals and shoes on a small scale that wasn't written before 1973. This is the first updated book I have found on the subject.
The book lays out in logical order the basics of leather, working with it, construction techniques and variety of projects that use those techniques in modular fashion.
The book is easy to follow, the project instructions are not cluttered with commentary, and are concise. This book is excellent for a beginner who has had no experience in making shoes and sandals at home, and does not assume a great knowledge in any one craft. Instructions as to what tools are needed, how to buy leather and findings, and finishing are all included. Willingness to try something new and a little time is all that is needed on your part. (plus a trip to the craft and leather stores!)
The kind of shoes and sandals presented in this book are suitable for most casual wear. The style of construction used doesn't lend itself well to what most people would consider business-like or formal shoes. They will be sturdy and if you construct them well, I see no reason why they wouldn't last as long as any commercially available shoe.
Although it is not stated in the book - all the projects are clearly designed for women. But the book shows you the basics of creating your own patterns. After all - feet are feet - no matter who they are on, so with a little creativity you can design your own patterns (and choose materials) that would compliment a man's outfit, with the instructions in this book.
One minor disapointment, the book does not have a project for strap sandals. However the author has a thoughtful website and sells several additional patterns (to be used with the techniques in this book) for sale at very minimal cost.
The author also includes some colorful trivia and history on shoes, througout the book.
