    Book Description

Dreaming of Palestine is a work of astonishing insight that takes us into the hearts and lives of a group of young people caught up in the Palestinian drive for indepen-dence. Writing in a passionate blend of poetry and prose, fifteen-year-old first-time novelist Randa Ghazy creates a convincing portrait of a group of friends who have grown up surrounded by fighting and know no world other than one with war or at least the threat of it. With eloquence and sensitivity, Ghazy creates a portrait of life in the Middle East that alternates the horrors of living amid war with the experiences of life-altering friendships, growing-up, falling in love, and dreaming of the future. Ibrahim, Nedal, Ramy, Mohammad, Ahmed, Gihad, Riham, and Uilad are characters with whom we can identify, even as they are experiencing the unimaginable.

Imagining the day-to-day experience of the Arab-Israeli conflict from a Palestinian perspective, Ghazy presents us with a world in which misery, frustration, and a sense of duty are ever-present, but in which hope continues to exist. Refusing to mince words, the book includes occasional passages of harsh language and depicts grim events that are meant to express the sentiments and realities of a population that the author believes to be underrepresented. By boldly depicting a sometimes shocking reality, Dreaming of Palestine underscores the importance of balancing thought with feeling, and loyalty with sympathy, making it clear that support for Israel and support for Palestine are not mutually exclusive.

Dreaming of Palestine bravely addresses a field of issues and feelings into which many writers would not even venture, and it comes at a time when maintaining freedom of speech is especially important. A novel that demands reflection, the book gives voice to the voiceless, while offering itself as a launching pad for dialogue and debate. With the confidence and eloquence of a mature novelist, the young Ghazy offers a story that might astonish readers with its intensity, but offers hope.

5 out of 5 stars the best book.......2004-12-19

I read a lot and this is by far he best book I have ever read in my entire life. I felt as though I was a part of the family of friendship. I have never lived in Palestine, however, my parents moved here in the 70's when the war forced them out. Through reading this book I was able to understand the lives of Palestinians and understand what it means to be a Palestinian.

I wish the world could read this book and understand the hearts of the Palestians who are truly the lost people.

I still can not believe author is only 15 years old, Good Job!!!

I noticed that a lot of people had negative reviews on this book. I only wish that they could have read it with a more open mind. Never did the author encourage violence. She only tried to explain the deep frustration that causes one to find death as the only way out. Thank god I was raised in America and I have all the wonderful rights that I enjoy. I never worry about my home being leveled or my family being killed. But, I can only imagine how different life would be for me if I did not have the freedom I do.

    1 out of 5 stars Teaches hatred.......2004-08-19

This popular book for young people glorifies hatred and violence. Obviously, people have the right to write books that depict innocent victims as horrible villains. But at some point, human society needs to reject the temptation to glorify death and destruction.

Those of us who encourage others to quit smoking cigarettes surely ought to consider encouraging others to give up their addiction to books such as this one.

    4 out of 5 stars Good read.......2004-07-21

All these accusations that this book makes racist remarks is unfounded. Come on, this book is a novel, the author is writing about people's experience and any comments made were by the characters, not the then 15-year old author. If you're going to write about about the Intifada, you're going to have to expose the truth about the brutal Israeli occupation, the threat of the Jewish settlers and the reasons behind this new phenomena of suicide bombings. No one is endorcing suicide here. But what most fail to question, this author does. WHY are desperate people, who've lost their family, home and everything else, driven to such terrible deeds? This book conveys such realities.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2003-11-06

This book is wonderfully written, it really makes you feel the plight of the Palestinian people. And it makes you understand why they resist in the way that they do. It really helped to put a face to the statistics of Palestinians being murdered by the Israeli's and wow, for being written by a 15 year old.

5 out of 5 stars This books deserves more attention.......2003-10-07

I wasn't expecting to like "Dreaming of Palestine." I assumed it would heavy-handed, manipulative, and-since it was penned by a then-15-year old-perhaps not even well written. But I was wrong-on all counts.

Heavy-handed it's not. Ghazy's stream of consciousness prose woven through the narrative (translated from the Italian by Marguerite Shore) is at first distracting, then mesmerizing. As I began to grasp the reality of the characters' lives, I realized their story couldn't be told any other way. Violence, destruction, and grief don't happen in ordered, logical sentences, with proper structure and format. The story follows the intersections of the lives of eight young Palestinians-Ibrahim, Nedal, Riham, Mohammed, Ramy, Gihad, Ahmed, and Ualid. Religion is not the common denominator that draws them together, since one of them is Christian. Instead they share the common experience of having lost family members at the hands of Israeli soldiers. Generations of war have destroyed their families and their heritage. They have every reason to be terrorists, but they are not. They strive-not always successfully-to live lives committed to non-violence and peace. Throughout the novel, the recurring theme of achieving non-violence one person at a time resonates.

Manipulative it's not. The seven men and one woman are like orphans in search of a family. This desire for family, to live among human beings who care for each other, is what binds them together. They cope with the unpredictable violence from the Israeli occupation forces by living together and helping each other create some sense of normalcy in their lives. Their bonds of friendship and love for each other give hope and meaning to their lives, under utterly hopeless circumstances. Politics and war represent disruption and devastation in their lives, not the force that drives them.

This novel is well written. I could easily dismiss that statement by adding: for a 15-year old. But that's not the case. Each character is so uniquely drawn I couldn't help but wonder if they are based on actual people. Ghazy shows a keen understanding of the lives of young adults, their dreams, fears, and the everyday struggles unique to that stage of life that seems far beyond her years. In contrasting these essences of normal life with the horror of neverending war, she displays real sophistication as a writer.

I believe "Dreaming of Palestine" is an important novel. It's not so much about religion or politics as it is about how war destroys young lives. It should be required reading for all young adults because they are the ones who will ultimately deal with the tragic inheritance of this conflict, and the trauma that will endure well into the future.

    5 out of 5 stars very helpful.......2003-09-04

I bought this book in 1998 and it was very helpful, it breaks the different types of adult movies down and puts them in catagories. Like man & woman, woman & woman, s&m, etc. It also gives a short summary of each movie. Also where you can find the movies reviewed in the book. I was hoping that they had updated this book in the last six years.

    5 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2001-10-14

I refer to this book alot as I scope out internet auctions. This book is really a sleeper -- really excellent. It's just a superb guide through the dark forest of adult videos. In fact, I can't think of a better book on the subject and I've seen quite a few. If you're really interested in the significant films of the genre, then this is the book to get. The authors are very objective and very knowledgable. They've interviewed important actors and directors. If they review a movie positively, then it's a great compliment to it and you should get it. I highly recommend this book and appreciate it alot.

    4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive.......2001-04-06

I first ordered this after sniffing around various adult stores and nearly always coming out disappointed. This book is quite helpful if you don't quite know what you want, making it a true guide.

The side panels and the reviews themselves are quite informative and helpful, making the selection process that much easier.

I've owned this little day book for more than 10 years and I still find it a wonderful source for research into medieval everyday life.

All the illuminations are of women doing various chores, some of them you'd expect--like spinning and weaving--and others, such as sculpting and selling silver and jewelry, you wouldn't. It's a charming and useful book for the reseacher.

In Western fairy tales, we've got the werewolf, the man who changes into a wolf. But in the East, it's the fox who does the changing, into a man--or, more often, a sensuous, seductive woman. In her skillful debut, Kij Johnson takes this classic Japanese myth (based in large part on a Royall Tyler translation of a particular story) and spins it into a luminous, lyrical tale, a tender and whisper-quiet study of love, desire, joy, and the nature of the soul.

The Fox Woman follows two families, one of foxes and another of humans. The restless Kaya no Yoshifuji fails to receive an appointment in the Emperor's court and, distracted and seemingly unfazed, decides to relocate to a rural estate to pass a pensive winter, accompanied by his wife Shikujo and son Tadamaro. But a young fox named Kitsune and her brother, mother, and grandfather have set up their den in the run-down estate, and soon the fate of both families becomes intertwined; Yoshifuji becomes bewitched by the foxes, and Kitsune in turn falls in love with him, much to the distress of all others involved, especially Shikujo.

Johnson tells her tale in measured, intimate passages, through Kitsune's diary, Yoshifuji's notebook, and Shikujo's pillow book. The rich, truthful depiction of the Heian-era setting, punctuated by exchanges of poetry and steeped in emotive descriptions of both the fox and human worlds, establishes a still, meditative, and rewarding pace. With her thoughtful ear, Johnson offers a mature and knowing first effort. --Paul Hughes

    Book Description

Based on the award-winning short story "Fox Magic," Kij Johnson's The Fox Woman is a haunting novel of love and magic; of Kitsune, the young fox kit who catches a glimpse of a Japanese nobleman and resolves to snare his heart. She will embark on a journey that will change her, her family, and all the humans she encounters . . . and the magic she conjures will transform all of their lives forever. Set against the backdrop of medieval Japanese society, The Fox Woman is both a retelling of the classic Japanese animal fable and a stunning exploration of what it means to be in love, whether fox or woman, and what paths one will take to try to find the mercurial ghost that is happiness. AUTHORBIO: Kij Johnson lives in Seattle, Washington.

    5 out of 5 stars Fox Dream.......2007-07-15

Although this book, and its sequel, "Fudoki," are classified as fantasy/science fiction, it is much more: dealing with the fragile and mutable nature of relationships, of love, obsession and illusion, it lifts you from the present into a fully realized world where history and imagination, and the boundaries of self-knowledge are subtly and skillfully merged into one of the most compelling and moving tales this reader has ever encountered.

    5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking.......2005-01-14

I had given up on reading most things labeled fantasy until a friend recommended to me Kij Johnson's The Fox Woman.

Kij gives us the best of literary fiction without the self-indulgent drivel, and the best of fantasy without inflicting upon us the constant repetition that is the staple of lesser authors.

Set in a fantastical medieval Japan, The Fox Woman tells a tale of self-transformation, of dream-chasing, of love both romantic and unconditional, of falls from grace and redemption, of sacrifice, and above all of human emotion and interaction, on a level that hits us deep in the gut and makes us shout, "Yes! I know that feeling!"

Although a fantasy, few stories are more true or more real than this.

4 out of 5 stars Kitsune, love, and magic..........2004-03-05

This is a wonderfully poetic novel that is told in diary format from three sources; the fox girl, the man she loves, and his wife. All three have their own lives outside of each other, and that shows in the way that they deal with others. But at the same time they are inexplicably tied together, and the way that Kij Johnson handled this is superb. She doesn't rush into the triangle, but glides into it,a nd before long you are at that point without realizing it.

The characters undergo drastic changes through the course of the story, though some changes are more noticeable than others. The fox starts out as a just a fox, but gradually she not only physically morphs into a human, but becomes one mentally and emotionally. This transformation threatens to destroy her small family as she pulls them into her fantasy.

The man has a fascination with the foxes that is sending him further and further away from his wife. When he meets the fox-girl, he is overwhelmed by her spell and falls for her.

His wife has to deal with his increasing interest in the foxes and his waning interest with her, and this eventually sends her away from their country home and back to the city.

This is a story of love, magic, and in many ways, of loss. I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in some of the lesser known stories of Japan (upon which this is somewhat based), and to all who enjoy a good love story!

5 out of 5 stars Fantasy, Literary, Enchanting: Both Style and Story.......2003-12-10

The pillowbooks of Kitsune--the vixen, who desires to be a woman because she has fallen in love with the Japanese nobleman--of Shijuko his wife and of Yoshifuji, the object of the Kitsune's passion; form an enchanting fantasy, a fable of human and animal existence, posing the eternal existential questions: what it is to love? to be a woman? to be a man? to be a fox or a dog? This fantasy drew me into its wonderful web for a number of reasons: the language was exquisite, the fine poetry in the oriental manner was delicately woven into the story (a sure way to my reader's heart) and the underlying commentary upon the human condition wrought in contrast to that of the family of foxes who live under the Japanese country house achieved a rare novel with both style and story. Yes, animals, be they foxes, cats or dogs do weave their own commentary on the comings and goings of humans. I am not knowledgeable about medieval Japanese culture or literature, but it suspended my disbelief and drew me into an oriental world. I felt I was there in the Japanese countryside. I saw the robes, the fans, the paper walls. Those who would quibble with the Japan Kij Johnson creates should turn to the history books. This is literary fiction. I loved it.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, like a clear winterýs day.......2003-08-25

When I picked up Fox Woman I had no idea what to expect from it. I had seen it on a friend's bookshelf and curiosity led me to order it. Inside I found a deep and beautiful story full of truth and pain. Before I finished the story I was drawn in by the incredible characterization and the simplicity using the different perspectives in diary format to define alternate views. While reading this book, I misplaced my copy and was so engrossed that I purchased another in order to finish it. While reading I feared how she was going to be able to end the book so as to not oversimplify, make it saccharine, or trite. All may fears were allayed and in the end I was satisfied that this book did not conclude so much as chose to stop sharing its story. It is one that should not be missed

4 out of 5 stars The apprentice always gets the treasure chest.......2004-10-11

A comedy that reveals some common traits in Ben Jonson plays. The Alchemist is a crook who, with the help of a woman and a servant, tries to get as much money as possible from anyone who is ready to believe brilliant promises founded on myths like turning lead into gold, or ready palms, or ready the stars and predicting the future, or getting married to some nobleman. It is all a bunch of lies wrapped up in beautiful language that uses a lot of Latin and Greek to make the promises both dim and brilliant, dim in meaning and brilliant in sound. It works very well till the neighbours start complaining about the agitation in the street and in the house, and till the owner of the house comes back and finds out what is going on. But the servant, aptly named Face, manages to get out of the trap by providing the owner of the house with a wife in the shape of a widow that had been brought in to marry a hypothetical Spanish count. She takes the first one that is ready to go through the procedure and it is the landlord. Since she brings a good dowry, this landlord keeps the servant Face in his service. On the other side the two other crooks, Subtle, the Alchemist, and Doll, his woman, have escaped through the backyard leaving everything behind, particularly everything they had been able to get from their gullible clients. Face gets the profit and is purified by his new master. The master of the house easily gets everyone out, all the complainers who do not dare go to a court, especially since they have no written evidence of the tricks they have been the victims of, which would mean they would look like fools. They just drop the matter and go away. Crooks once again work in groups and it is the lowest servant of the band that reveals himself to be more intelligent and swift than his own master, so that he cheats him out of the profit, he manages to get clean out of the business, and he even gets a better position than before. All along Ben Jonson ridicules doctors, puritans, rich people who want to satisfy their ambition for power with quick easy and somewhat magical means. Hence the gullible victims of such crooks are definitely made fun of, though Ben Jonson saves morality in a way by punishing the master crook who loses everything, and yet is immoral because the crook apprentice or helper gets all the profit, hence stealing all the victims of what they had paid or given. Rather brilliant though slightly verbose.

5 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Ben Jonson's Comedies.......2002-11-13

I recently read the early 17th century comedy "Volpone", my first introduction to Ben Jonson. I was surprised by how well Jonson's humor had traveled through 400 years of cultural change. I did have difficulty with Jonson's dedication (several pages), the introductory argument, and the prologue as well as a "Pythagorean literary satire" in Act One, Scene One. But thereafter I found the humor to be natural and enjoyable. I even found myself somewhat sympathetic for the unscrupulous Volpone, Mosca, Voltore, Corbaccio, and Corvino. I immediately hunted around on my dustier bookshelves for other works of Ben Jonson.

"Epicene" was less easy to digest, but was worth the effort. There is a surprising twist in the final scene and I suggest that the reader avoid any literary criticism or introductions to "Epicene" until after your first reading. I had less empathy for the characters in "Epicene" and it was difficult to identify any "good guys". The characters were not terribly disagreeable, but simply dilettantes that had little concern for morality or ethics. The dialogue is more obscure (and more bawdy) than in "Volpone". I found it helpful to first read the footnotes for a scene before actually reading the scene itself.

"The Alchemist" is more like "Volpone". The main characters are unscrupulous con-men; their targets are gullible, greedy individuals. I learned quite a bit about alchemy, at least alchemy as practiced by 17th century con-men. As with "Volpone" and "Epicene", I was unable to predict how Ben Jonson would bring the play to a satisfactory conclusion. I enjoyed "The Alchemist" and I expect that I will read it again. I don't know if it is performed very often, but it would probably be quite entertaining.

"Bartholomew Fair" introduces a large, motley collection of characters that largely converse in lower class colloquialisms that require some effort to master. The comedy was intended in part to be a satire on Puritans and thereby please King James, but it was equally an introduction to the varied individuals that might be encountered at an annual fair. It was not easy to keep track of the many characters and I continually referred to the cast listing to reorient myself.

There are a number of collections of Ben Jonson's plays. I recommend an inexpensive collection, "The Alchemist and Other Plays", publish by Oxford University Press as a World's Classic. The introduction, glossary, and explanatory footnotes by Gordon Campbell are quite good. Begin with either "Volpone" or "The Alchemist" if you are new to Jonson. I hope you are as surprised and pleased as I was.

Ben Jonson, although modern audiences find him difficult to read, played an important role in the development of the English comedic play. Volpone is a dark comedy that explores the twisted world of a con artist and his toady. The play demonstrates Jonson's awareness of the hypocrisy of social situations. Similarly, Bartholomew Fair takes the reader on a tour of the seamier side of seventeenth century London life. Zeal of the Land Busy, a religious hypocrite, still speaks to our generation when questions of religious expression still plague us. Epicene is a gender-bender in which the ideal silent woman turns out to be a man. The Alchemist, although the most difficult of the plays to read, is worth the effort, as it explores the questions of knowledge, ownership of knowledge, and abuse common in today's world.

          Book Description

This edition brings together Jonson's four great comedies in one volume. Volpone, which was first performed in 1606, dramatizes the corrupting nature of greed in an exuberant satire set in contemporary Venice. The first production of Epicene marked the end of a year-long closure of the theatres because of an epidemic of Plague in 1609; its comedy affirms the consolatory power of laughter at such a time. The Alchemist (1610) deploys the metaphors of alchemical transformation to emphasize the mutability of the characters and ther relationships. In Bartholomew Fair (1614) Jonson ebroils the visitors to the fair in its myriad temptations, exposing the materialistic impulses beneath the apparent godliness of jacobean Puritans. Under the General Editorship of Michael Cordner of the University of York, the texts of the plays have been newly edited and are presented with modernized spelling and punctuation. Stage directions have been added to facilitate the reconstruction of the plays' performance, and there is a scholarly introduction, detailed annotation, and a glossary.
