The Bijoux Specialists' Book ever.......2004-05-31
I am collecting Ethnic jewelry myself, with a specialisation in North Africa and Middle East. I was surprised to find such a beauty and variety in a single book. I strongly recommend it for anyone who is interested in this subject.
If you just want to have one more book as a coffee table one, I also recommend. All your house guests, even yourself will be thrilled with the pictures (full coloured) and text. Only downfall: Text is in French only. Pitty.

French fashion maven and muse Nathalie Delhaye has spent years collaborating with top Paris designers, collecting insider secrets from fashion’s favorite ateliers along the way. Now in Beads, Buttons, and Bijoux, she shares some of those secrets, showing readers how to transform a few pennies’ worth of beads into chic, sparkling jewelry.

Customer Reviews:
Designs I haven't seen elsewhere.......2007-01-09
I checked this book out at our local library, and am seriously considering buying it. I have several other jewelry books, and this book has lots of designs I haven't seen elsewhere.
There is not a lot of use of chains/headpins in the book. Many designs use nylon thread or 32 gauge wire, and a lot of seed beads. I really like the author's use of embroidery ribbon. Instructions seem easy enough: one friend of mine made two rings in one afternoon, and I made a necklace and a ring. As the other reviewers said, look at it first to see if the designs appeal to you.
If you like the Bead Fantasies series, you may like this also. The designs here are simpler than Bead Fantasies, but they use lots of seed beads and have a generally similar delicate appeal.
I'd give it 5 stars, but there are too many ring designs and not enough necklace/bracelet designs for me.
Original, Simple & In.......2006-12-14
I bought this book, and already have so many wonderful plans for new jewelry. I do recommend browsing through it at your local bookstore, because jewelry is very much a matter of your likes.
I find that this book is great, not only the patterns that are in it, but it is so inspirational too. I am itching to make so many things both from the patterns, and on original designs that the patterns have inspired.
The photography is great, and I love the how the instructions are accompanied by drawings to make things clearer.
Very recommended.
Not what I expected.......2006-10-13
I bought this sight unseen and see perhaps two bracelets I'd like to make. Items are very simple and use lots of buttons. Rings have 25 patterns, necklaces have 20 and brooches, pins and bracelets have 13 altogether. Explanations appear to be adequate and pictures are fine but the projects themselves are not attractive. Definitely look before you buy this one.

Madame Castafiore descends upon Captain Haddock's home.......2003-05-24
I have to admit that after going to the Moon and rescuing his friend Chang in Tibet, the stay at home Tintin adventure "Les Bijoux de la Castafiore" ("The Castafiore Emerald") is relatively tame. It begins with Tintin and Captain Haddock out for a walk and discovering a band of gypsies camped near the rubbish dump. This offends the good captain, who offers the gypsies the use of a large meadow near his hall. However, no good deed goes unpunished and he receives a telegram announcing the imminent arrival of Bianca Castafiore, the Milanese Nightingale. Meanwhile, the broken step on the front staircase earns Haddock a badly sprained ankle and the opportunity to roll around the adventure in a wheelchair. The diva and her entourage then descend upon the hall, literally adding insult to injury by giving the captain the gift of a parrot.
As Castafiore repeatedly points out, she has brought along her jewels, including an emerald given the signora by the Maharajah of Gopal. The gypsy fortuneteller had already predicted the theft of the jewels and we expect her prophecy to come true, even though Castafiore is constantly yelling about her jewels missing. But you know that sooner or later this is going to come to pass and then it will be up to our intrepid reporter to solve the case and save the day. Meanwhile, Captain Haddock's life continues to be a string of minor misfortunes and misunderstands thanks to Castafiore, Professor Tournesol, the parrot, Dupont and Dupond, and the unwillingness of the local repairman to come out and fix that step.
"Les Bijoux de la Castafiore" derives its comedy from the clash of characters with Tintin staying out of the way for the most part. Of course, by this time in the series Hergé is completely comfortable with his cast of characters, which shows in the interplay, although I admit the diva is not my cup of tea. I just happen to really like the way Hergé represents other lands, so having him stay around the captain's house just seems to me to be an interlude from the main adventures. Still, "Les Bijoux de la Castafiore" is well worth the read Hergé does a delightful take on that new fangled invention, the television. Final Note: I like Hergé's quaint cover, with Castafiore singing for the cameras while a smiling Tintin reminds us to be quiet during the performance.
The Castafiore Emerald.......2000-07-03
This is probably the least well known and appreciated of Tintin's adventures. Tintin and Captain Haddock receive a visit from the overbearing opera singer/diva Bianca Castafiore. Many humorous incidents ensue as Bianca is hounded by the press and ends up losing her fabulous emerald. The situation is complicated by the arrival of gypsies to Captain Haddock's home whose presence arises suspicion over the disappearance of Bianca's jewels.
This is the only Tintin adventure where Tintin does not journey to distant lands for his adventures - the action is all sentenced around his home. As a result there is not the normal pace and excitment normally present in Tintin and perhaps this is why the book is not so popular with younger readers. However the story is still excellent in a more subtle way. Firstly the handling of the gypsies in the book is very sensitive and not prejudiced which is certainly not in keeping with the period in which the book was written. The gypsies are not depicted as a band of thieving rogues but a group of people abandoned by all sections of society. Herge plays very well on the inherent prejudices of the characters of the book very well throughout to give the gypsies a sympathetic representation. In this respect the book is excellent for young children since it will give them a broader view of the many peoples of the world. Secondly the subject of press intrusion is dealt with very well throughout the book. The visiting opera singer Bianca Castafiore is followed by journalists and her equivocal attitude to the press is hilarious - she embraces one magasine yet hates another simply because she didn't like one of the pictures of her which was published in it. Then of course there is the actual mystery of the emerald. Unlike other Tintin books the main theme seems to be fairly trifling and merely a source of continuity for the book. The reader is not engaged by the emerald's disappearance and in the end the thief turns out to be ..... (I won't spoil it). The illustrations in the book are particularly detailed and lush. This was Herge's ninteenth Tintin book and thus his style is established and refined as are his racial prejudices. In fact by now Herge was a champion of the anti-racism cause.
The Castafiore Emerald is probably one of Herge's most mature works. Although there is a story, this is inconsequential when compared to the other racial and political issues and the rich characters. Because of this fact the book would probably not be so engaging for younger readers but would certainly be diverting for older children and indeed educational in many ways.

Another Herge masterpiece.......2000-07-03
This is a classic chapter in Tintin's life - or more to the point: Captain Haddock's life, for his relationship with Castafiore is explored over the main plot - a mystery surrounding her lost jewels. The artwork is, as always, superb and the subtleties endless. The disillusioned accompanist is a great touch, and we can share the Haddock's discomfort at having to spend countless days in his once peaceful abode, at the mercy of Castafiore's shrill voice. It's great to go back to the original French versions - though the English translations are fine, noone can fully replicate the original intention of Herge, the master.

interesting.......2007-01-14
while i read alot of manga... really have to find that manga sugar-daddy... this one was okay... i get the gothic part... i get the change to a girl part... however when i get to the point were i cannot tell who is the good guy and who is the bad guy, i am confused... the art makes a lot of the characters look a lot alike... but other then that the story is not bad...
Wonderful art, confusing story.......2006-03-30
Let me start by saying that Park Sang-Sun is my favourite artist, and you can see her talent by flipping through the pages of Les Bijoux.
However, cramming such a detailed and immense world/story into five volumes was not a great idea.
This first volume does a decent job of introducing the world of Les Bijoux, though I would say that it's a bit overwhelming and unclear at times. For a first-time reader I'd suggest reading the first TWO volumes to get a grasp on whether you want to continue or not.
For fans of gorgeous men and a new style of fantasy, this series is for you. However, some might be put off by the sometimes intense violence and sexual themes. (Definitely NOT for younger readers!)
note: the pictures that Amazon provides are actually from vol. 4.
a good yaoi .......2006-02-12
I liked this series but do have one thing to critisize. Ok, the first book kina jumps into the plot and its a lot of stuff to handle at one time. Other than that, I thought the artwork is fantastic, the rest of the books (and this one) is great, and the I like the whole pretty boy love story. *sigh* The most emotional thing about this series is the changes the characters go through in the books. By the last one they are totally different people, which isn't always a bad thing.
Jewelicious!!.......2005-12-07
I have the whole collection and boy do I ever love it!! The first time I noticed the first volume while looking for another yaoi,I wasn't sure for the name threw me off but after I read one chapter I know it was a must buy, must have. The artwork totally rocks!!!!! I began to bond with the characters as the story prolonged. Lapis-Lazuli was my favorite but also Diamond. I know he was not all that bad but you gotta give it to him all he wanted was his jewel. The ending was oh boy I bawled through the whole 5th book man I didn't think I was going to buy it but I did. But it was an awesome the story itself was full many a meaning but I let you decide what they are.
Oh I have the Tarot Cafe and Ark Angel both done by Sang-sun Pak boy I love her artwaork I just can't get enough. I drew Diamond, Lapis, and Panther and placed them on my folder.
Art and Depth a Perfect Gem.......2004-08-02
I've read a lot of mixed reviews on this series and I'm surprised. I collect a lot of gothic and bishonen mangas and this one is at the top of my list. The art is truly breathtaking, and once you "get" the story the depth of characterization and plot is fascinating. The true test of a good manga is if you want to re-read the stories again, and if you can't wait for the next book. This one passes the test in spades. It is not a light read, though. You discover that even the worst-seeming villains, like real life, have a depth of humanity and even redemption. The quest for power, battle techniques and sad history truly allows you to feel for every character, even the minor ones. Instead of finding it confusing, I enjoyed the detailed plot set-up in the first and second book. Book four throws a few more sub-plots into the mix and I'm not sure how every detail will wrap up in the final book but I'm certainly looking forward to it. Get the first two books, and get caught up in the world of Les Bijoux...you won't regret it.
Book Description
Sex, sin and sedition rule the day at the court of a young Louis XIV... Through a cast of characters who, along with their private passions, are caught up in the maelstrom of history, controversial author Olivia Peyton evokes a decadent 17th century society as it sinks into vice and irresponsibility, engulfed in the master plans of a young king with a mind to become immortal. Shudder at the unjust execution of the debonair Cinq-Mars by Cardinal Richelieu, witness the building of Versailles, be a party to the conspiracies of a secret society known as The Company of the Blessed Sacrament, cheer the adventures of an aging musketeer D'Artagnan, learn the true legend of that original French vampire, Noctambule, and ultimately uncover the identity of an infamous prisoner, the Man in the Iron Mask. Discover the evil curse that haunts Versailles...a legacy of blood-lust and necromancy that casts a shadow over the gardens of gentle gardener Andre Le Notre to this very day. Relive the past through the eyes of a prophetic woman who walked with evil and lived to tell of its power and fascination, as a testament for the generations to come. Author's note: Bijoux is by no means intended as a romance novel, yet rather a serious study of 17th century politics, society and the oft' times dark world of esoterica. Not recommended for readers who prefer their stories of the milk-toast variety, as this tale is very dark and based one-hundred percent on facts gleaned from sources such as the diaries of physician Armand Cousinot, the records of the chief of police of 17th c. Paris and a very revealing volume belonging to the family de Guise [secreted in a large library in the Northeast United States].
Customer Reviews:
Great read........2007-06-16
I found this book very enjoyable with just the right amount of intrigue unlike so many books these days that are so over the top that they become more comical than the authors original intent.
As for Danielle "Dreamland" your review seems alittle jaded maybe you should try reading comic books they are under 200 pages and can be very entertaining...or a prescription for Ritalin.
"Bijoux": A Delightful Discovery.......2007-06-14
I LOVED THIS BOOK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Starting with the heroine Bijoux, we are introduced to a 17th Century Mata Hari, whose intricate relationships with the power brokers of France provides an almost "insider" view into the court within the reign of Louis XIV. In fact the very birth of this character is a subject of intrigue, secrecy and revenge. Her mother was a celebrated courtesan and her father was a noble of high rank whose relations with King Louis the XIII were both political and intimate. From the first page we are moved along at a rapid pace through the high society and political intrigue of 17th century France. I was mesmerized by this heroine who survives and thrives through her use of wit and intelligence.
The novel also incorporates elements of the supernatural with just the right amount of detail and suspense. Pervading the novel is a character whose presence is more felt than encountered. The character of Noctambule represents one of the earlier manifestations of vampirism as it was understood in French society at that time. In fact a large amount of this novel contains accurate historical information that creates a three dimensional feel to the characters and settings of this book. A good example is displayed in the depiction of an evil priest named Guibourg whose unspeakable acts are punished with equal cruelty by the Sun King himself. A little follow-up research into this matter confirmed both the crimes and punishment that were detailed in the novel had indeed taken place as listed.
The mixture of fictional and real characters brings me to two depictions that I truly enjoyed. The character of d'Artagnan as the young swashbuckling hero of the three musketeers was etched into my earliest childhood memories of high adventure. Yet in this novel he is presented as a middle aged man who now works for the Cardinal as one of his most trusted spies. This peek into the progression of this character was truly fascinating within the context of the overall story. In this case we have a much older man who continues to pursue adventure and women with equal zeal. It was surprising to note how this characterization resonated with the many aging singers within our own time that refuse to grow up and put down the microphone. Conversely, I was given the pleasure of encountering the young Louis the XIV both as a child and dashing young man. What a pleasant surprise to see Louis the hunter, lover and absolute ruler of France. This was a far cry from the rather rotund representations that were presented to me within my studies of World History. The Louis that is shown within these pages presents the reader with history's version of a current movie star. In fact the act of "star gazing" along with the court's incessant use of gossip tends to strike home within our own time as we continue to be caught up in the lives of famous people.
Bijoux moves through a fantastic collection of people that includes a dwarf and a trans-gendered noble to name a few. She displays the full range of human emotions from joy, love and lust to sorrow, repentance and humility that is borne of suffering. In all these things and more the reader is given a front row seat into a time that was not as far removed as we may have believed before reading this wonderful book. If lust, history and the supernatural are not enough to tempt you then prepare yourself for intricate plot twists and superb dialogue that is as richly crafted as the royal tapestries that decorate the very palace of Versailles. My only hope is that there is some sort of sequel soon as this type of historical fiction is truly addictive.
Sincerely,
D. Pistone
History Repeats Itself.......2007-06-14
Someone posted this review on a forum I used to belong to and I think it's pretty accurate:
"Just around a month or so ago I finally got around to ordering Bijoux
for my mom as it is about her favorite time period. Well, according to
her it is, 'the best book' she's *ever* read, both for content and for
writing style. She looks forward to her reading time every night. She's
an avid fiction reader, so that means Olivia Peyton beat out Stephen King, Anne Rice and everyone else! Just wanted to encourage other listers to check it out if they get a chance."
My mom liked it, too, for the record...and she is very picky.
Really, really, bad.......2007-05-25
What can I say? I really tried reading the entire book but I stopped around page 200. I couldn't read anymore of such badly written drivel.

Simply Incredible.......2006-12-31
I just adored McKillip's novel. A wonderful story, combined with excellently developed characters, and descriptive wirting that takes you soaring through her world, make this novel one of the most memorable you will ever read. For lack of a more fortified adjective, it was amazing. I've read McKillip before and been a bit disappointed, to be honest; but this was just a lovely, lovely, lovely book, one to cherish forever.
Reading that goes beyond age limit.......2006-07-08
This is the first McKillip story I ever read, the book that got me hooked to this author's writing. Patricia is an inspiration to writers, and a continual source of entertainment for readers. I know the listing says juvenile, for readers ages 6-12, but that is just wrong. I enjoyed this story at age 23 and I'd enjoy it just as much now at 44.
Everyone should read this book, no matter what your age is!
My favorite book of all time........2006-02-28
I am so glad they reprinted this book. For years it was out of print and incredibly hard to find.
I found this book when I was in 5th grade, and read my copy till it fell apart. If I had a spare day, I would just sit down and read it, wrapping myself in its words like a warm blanket. I still read it once a year.
This book really saved me as a kid. It taught me that even though I was young, and poor, and hurting, I had the world at my feet. It gave me the courage to stand up and take on the world.
Delightful.......2006-02-21
This is a delightful story of love, magic, and healing. It's not the typical fantasy story of good versus evil. It's simply a story of a girl struggling with the world around her until she can find a place in it for herself.
WONDERFUL!!!!!.......2006-01-02
oh my...i loved this book!! i read it in one day. i couldn't put it down. It is definately one of McKillip's best, in my opinion. I also enjoyed reading her other books The Forgotten Beats of Eld, and Ombria in Shadow. But of those three this is most definately my favorite. The romance and mystery of the magic in this book is what kept lighting my interest and imagination. She uses words in wonderful ways to spark your imagination and wraps you in the story with the flow and rhythm of the sentences. I loved this book and want to read it over and over again. Definately one of my all time favorites.
Book Description
Welland was less than a slave. Slaves are human, and he was wolf, allowed to assume human form only when it suited the sorceress Daria.
Daria kept an army of changelings -- mostly wolf but some lynx or weasel, a bear or two, and at least one rat. She used them to hunt and kill. And sometimes to pretend to be human, so she could pretend to be a lady.
Weiland hated the lie almost as much as he hated the truth. Then he met a burglar, a thief named Shile, who offered to help him steal what he had never owned. His own troubled soul...

The Changeling Prince .......2006-07-26
This is a good read, especially if you want something different from the usual were-monster stories.
Pretty good.......2005-07-22
After only just discovering VVV recently, I've been working through her books. I find her to be an excellent writer with highly effective characterization. This book is no exception. The character of Weiland draws the reader's compassion. Especially after discovering how he was capture as a wolf pup and basically turned into a human and abused and tortured consistantly throughout his life. The author does not let the reader discover much about the interworkings of the evil Daria. We only know that she is evil and would not shy away from brutally and viciously murdering anyone (even her own family).
You can guess early on in the story (well, those older can) the truth about Weiland, although I was surprised in the end by something I had not even considered. (Of course, I won't spoil it). Overall, I think you will enjoy it, but I don't think it was as well written as some of her other works.
Great Take on Shapeshifter Theme.......2003-06-11
What would it be like for a wolf to be compelled to take the form of a man? Starting with this premise, Vivian Vande Velde writes a riveting story about Weiland, who was captured by Daria as a young cub and raised mainly as a human. However, Daria, no matter how brutal her tactics, had not been able to destroy the basic decency of Weiland's nature.
Daria, who heretofore, had been content to live in the forest served by her transformed creatures, has decided to move to a townhouse in St. Celia's. Weiland is one of those who are to accompany her. In St. Celia's Weiland comes in contact with large groups of humans for the first time including a thief named Shile.
Through Shile, Weiland learns a great deal that he he never knew before about what it means to be a man.
Well written and compelling, Vivian Vande Velde draws the reader into Weiland's world with a sure touch. This one is guaranteed to appeal to adult fantasy lovers as well as younger readers.
