Excellent, not what I expected at all........2002-11-16
Billy Graham's book Approaching Hoofbeats, although being nearly twenty years old (at the time of this review), is as timely as the day it was first put to paper. The world famous Evangelist studies some of the famous symbols of John's Revelations and how they are more important than ever in today's world and Church. I admit that I approached the book with a bit of unease, the Bible warns against listening to those that interpret omens, and some believe that extends to those who try to second guess the Bible and the timing of prophecy events that Jesus said only God would know, within the context of the fiction arena, as with the Left Behind series or The Omen trilogy, I have no problems - it's fantasy. However my worries soon vanished as Mr. Graham, instead of belting out the cliched 'the end is now', leaves the inevitable to God and instead focuses on how Christians must remain diligent in faith and practice (i.e. really walk the Walk instead of puffing out our collective chests and talking the Walk). The three chapters devoted to the White Horse of Deception, I think, should be required reading for any Christian, both new to the faith or smugly tooling around with those "I'm gonna be raptured" bumper stickers (remember, Pride cometh before the fall!) next to the license plate. His firm stance on promoting peace, giving selflessly to those in need, and remaining true to scripture makes for an invigorating read. Highly recommended.

A wake up call for people who are not ready for the Second Coming

The image of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse in Revelation 6:1-8 is one of the most vivid and powerful in all the writings of the prophets. Their presence speaks of a coming day of horror - the first four judgments of the tribulation. White, red, black, and pale, they will wreak destruction around the world. Prophecy expert Mark Hitchcock takes an in-depth look at the horsemen and shows how today's events point toward the prophecy about them. Signs all around us indicate that the four horsemen of the Apocalypse may be ready to mount up and gallop across the earth.

Story Behind the Book
The four horsemen of the Apocalypse in Revelation 6:1–8 is one of the most vivid, powerful visions in all of the Scriptures. The apostle John saw a vision of four horses (white, red, black, and pale) galloping across the world in the end times, leaving unbelievable destruction in their wake. The chilling imagery of that vision has gripped believers for over two thousand years. The purpose of the book is to take an in-depth look at these four mysterious horsemen and show how their approach seems to be developing before our eyes, signaling the advent of that terrible seven years known as the Great Tribulation. The four horsemen are symbolic of great movements that will mark the onset of that climactic era in history.

"The hour of the appointment was always five and Julio was accustomed to see his beloved approaching by the reflection of the recently lit street lamps, her figure enveloped in furs, and holding her muff before her face as if it were a half- mask. "
Book Description
Using the prism of DÜrer's woodcut, the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, Andrew Cunningham and Ole Grell offer a new and exciting interpretation of European history in the period 1490 to 1648. DÜrer's image came to characterize the outlook of most early modern Europeans, who saw repeated episodes of war, epidemics and famine as indicating the imminent end of the world. Lavishly illustrated with fascinating contemporary images, The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse brings together religious, social, military and medical history, giving readers a unique insight into the early modern world. Andrew Cunningham is a Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellow in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science in the University of Cambridge. His most recent book is The Anatomical Renaissance (1997). Ole Peter Grell is a Lecturer in Early Modern History at the Open University, Milton Keynes. Among his recent books are Calvinist Exiles in Tudor and Stuart England (Scolar Press, 1997) and Paracelsus: The Man and His Reputation (Brill Academic Publishers, 1998). Together the authors have published Health Care and Poor Relief in Protestant Europe 1500-1700 (Routledge, 1997) and Health Care and Poor Relief in Counter-Reformation Europe (Routledge, 1999). Since 1998 they have edited the series History of Medicine in Context published by Ashgate.

A Spanish literary master.......2007-02-21
The fact that I am the first to review Ibanez's unquestioned classic, "The Four Horseman of the Apocalpse," says much of how we as a modern-day literary community have lost touch with one of the truly great authors of the early twentieth century. The story-line itself encompasses that of a young bourgeois artist of South American descent who finds himself in Paris, and, while singularly in search of his aethetic self, ultimately takes to the trenches to defeat German militarism. Ibanez's poetic grace and ability to dramatically weave a story is his greatest attribute.

When Julio finally decided to fight, the world and his family knew him for a different man. In the end the man who was once a spoiled son of privilege, became a man of honor and integrity, noble soldier in the war to end all wars.

WOW!.......2005-03-20
I was spurred to read this book because the 1921 film adaptation is so great; usually I read the book before seeing the movie based on it, if I see the movie based on a book at all. The book is even better than the already phenomenal film; since the film is only about two hours long, it obviously couldn't fit in everything that happens in the book, and there were some things invented, left out, or cut and pasted together (in a respectful tasteful way though). The book gives an even more complete and complex picture of the Desnoyers family and their circle of friends, like having a lot more details about their life in Argentina before Julio, the main character, his sister Chichi, and their cousins the von Hartrotts were born, as well as having more details about their life back in Europe when they returned there shortly before WWI broke out. Having the powerful images from the film in my head made the characters, plotline, and descriptions in the book even more powerful. There were also some things that the book made clearer than the film had, although personally I felt that the ending line of the book wasn't as powerful or effective as the final intertitles of the movie. Still, it's a great book, powerful historical fiction about WWI and the years leading up to it. My only gripe is that this translation is a bit dated, such as in certain words or turns of phrase that now have different connotations or have fallen into such disusage that the modern reader would have to look them up. It doesn't change the powerful content one iota, but it would still be nice to have an updated translation with more modern language and some explanatory footnotes where needed.
The most beautiful book ever written........2005-03-06
I love this book. I read it many years ago...The beginning starts off peacefully, like a romance, you become part of the scenerios, you fall in love with the characters...Then all of a sudden there is war (World War 1)...This novel is about people in that epoch, about tango dancing, about France and Argentina. About money and the pampas...About Germany...In fact about all of Europe...It is about an epoch in which people thought the world would end in war and genocide and everyone was just trying to have sex and fall in love and live life to the fullest before it all came to an end...The name Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse which is a phrase taken from the last book in the Bible which talks about Armageddon (better known as "the end of the world." This book is like a mix of War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy and Gone With The Wind by Margaret Mitchell, only better. The English translation of this book is so true to the original...nothing, absolutely nothing, is lost in translation here....Read this book if you want to read great literature.
A Great Novel.......2002-10-25
Like any great novel the characters become more compelling than the otherwise fascinating backdrop of Paris during the early stages of WW I. The story centers around a family who returns to France after one generation's absence and must come to terms with themselves and each other. This book was written during the last part of the war and the sadness of the reality of the war is evident in the book. Don't let the slow beginning fool you, the rest of the book is worth your effort.
Book Description
This book explores the emerging phenomenon of complex humanitarian emergencies and the evolving policies of the United States in responding to these emergencies. In addition, Andrew Natsios examines the relationship of disaster response to U.S. foreign policy and national interest, and makes suggestions for improving both relief strategies and systems for designing those strategies. To these issues Natsios brings his first-hand experience in numerous key positions. Mr. Natsios provides case study analysis from these experiences over the past five years to illustrate the arguments presented in the book, particularly regarding Somalia, Angola, Sudan, Panama, and Kuwait and Kurdistan following the Gulf War. As former president George Bush indicates in his foreword to the volume, "this book will make a substantive contribution to continuing and enhancing vitally important work." Of great interest to scholars, researchers, and policy makers in the areas of contemporary American foreign policy and humanitarian activities abroad.
Book Description
The morning newspapers are jammed with alarming headlines and stories asking questions no one can answer. In Storm Warning, Billy Graham examines the problems facing America today. He answers the tough questions with astute biblical insight and points to the hope and renewal found in Christ-for our families, our nation and our world.

i've read many endtimes outlines. my favorites r under books at fortbethel.com. the info in, 'storm warning' is a bit dated. buy used.
A Strong Dose of Reality.......2001-03-10
We live in a broken and sinful world. The Bible states that all will be cleansed by a great apocalypse. Before this occurs, things will get steadily worse. Billy Graham pulls no punches as he connects the situation of our fallen world to end-time prophecies in Scripture, especially Revelation. The Enlightenment myth of endless progress is effectively challenged by Rev. Graham's writing. If we modern humans are proud of ourselves for our "progress," Rev. Graham's book will serve as an unwelcome but vitally necessary wake-up call. We should stop patting ourselves on the back and rather repent in sackcloth and ashes for such atrocities as "the abortion holocaust," as Rev. Graham titles one of the chapters in this book.
Absolutely Fascinating!.......1997-11-16
In "Storm Warning," Billy Graham examines the events of today and compares and contrasts them to the Biblical Book of Revelations. If you are someone who is intrigued by the events described in the Book of Revelations, then you will absolutely LOVE this book. I strongly recommend it!

Famous for her acclaimed vampire novels, Tanya Huff has created many popular fantasies, including these two classics-finally available in one volume.
Customer Reviews:
Strange bedfellows.......2005-06-20
I'm not sure why these two fantasy novels of Tanya Huff were brought together in one edition: one is an urban fantasy, and the other is standard swords and sorcery. None of the characters cross over. However, they're both a pleasure to read, so have no qualms about buying this edition.
Some of Tanya Huff's stock characters inhabit "Gate of Darkness Circle of Light": the crabby, driven heroine; the manly-yet-innocent hunk (in this case, an Angel); a surly cat that deals very efficiently with the Dark (much more so than the humans or the Angel); and a musician who struggles with his sexual identity through most of the book.
That said, there are also some very unique characters in this urban fantasy about a band of intrepid heroines and heroes who attempt to save Toronto (and the rest of the world) from the forces of Darkness on Midsummer's Eve. One of them is a Bag Lady who is genuinely smelly and not at all cute. Another is a brain-damaged muffin maker.
The musician is singled out by Huff to endure a particularly gristly coming-of-age journey. He is captured by ogres, and when he manages to escape from them, he has to run a gauntlet of ever more hideous fairy-tale creatures before he makes it back to Toronto to help save the Earth.
"Gate of Darkness Circle of Light" is a pleasure to read, well-plotted, with an interesting twist at the end. The most unlikely people band together in an attempt to defeat Evil, and Huff brings them all together in a way that satisfies and makes sense.
Tanya Huff sets "The Fire's Stone" in a fairly standard fantasy world (thief, wizard, prince go on quest), but her characters are completely her own. For one thing there's an unusual love triangle---at least it would be unusual in most fantasies---but common for Huff. Really, the only non-Huffian part of the triangle is a virgin who intends to stay that way.
Although there is a bit too much text wasted on the love story, "The Fire's Stone" is a strong, well-plotted fantasy with likeable, interesting characters (or unlikeable, interesting characters, including a pair of really evil twins). Huff does her usual good job with the minor characters, especially the soldiers and Travelers (gypsies). I even liked the evil wizard. He could have talked me right into joining him.
The fantastical clutter of magic stones, mirrors, and wizards are handled in such an imaginative way that they held my interest to the end, especially during the scenes in the wizard's dwelling and the cauldron of the volcano.
After a sparkling introduction wherein the thief, Aaron attempts to steal the emerald from the Ischian king's scepter as a funerary gift for his friend, we meet the three main characters: Aaron, plus Prince Darvish who captures him in the act of thieving, plus Chandra, a Wizard of the Nine who is the prince's reluctant fiancée.
When an unknown wizard steals the Fire's Stone, which is the only magical device that stands between Ischia and a burning death by lava, Aaron, Darvish, and Chandra set out on a quest to recover The Stone.
Each of the three have character flaws that must be overcome before they can work together to confront the evil wizard and return The Stone to Ischia. Huff handles this part of the story very well, and I was really rooting for Aaron, Darvish, and Chandra, although admittedly, I was hoping Chandra and Darvish would fall in love with each other, and finish off the story with a standard romance.
Alas, Huff was too clever for me there. She stays true to her characters and a mundane 'happily-ever-after' simply would not fit. At least I can hope for a sequel.
She can do better.......2002-04-01
Tanya has written better books. The characters are one dimensional and the themes definitely politically correct. Vulgar language is thrown in with no apparent reason. The story is alright, but not well developed or complex. A simple read if you don't mind the language.

Finally! Tanya Huff's unique visions together!.......2001-12-19
"Of Darkness, Light, and Fire" is a volume that, when I saw it in the bookstore, made me jump for joy. Tanya Huff is one of my favorite authors because of her unique visions of fantasy and realistic and sympathetic characters.
"Gate of Darkness, Circle of Light" is a semi-contemporary (mid-'80s) fantasy set in Toronto, and it was the first Tanya Huff book I read. It explores the ideas of magic, bards, angels, and demons, while also presenting balanced views on mental retardation, homelessness, and homosexuality. Despite all this heavy baggage, it is also a lot of fun and suitable for multiple readings.
"The Fire's Stone" has been out of print for a while, which is a shame. It has nothing story-wise in common with "GoD, CoL" but it is equally fun and well written. It is a more typical fantasy, set in a far away land, with a thief, a wizard, and a prince. One of my favorite parts of the book is how it deals with a three sided romantic/friendly relationship. Another is a somewhat grueling description of alcohol withdrawal and that character's ensuing fight against alcoholism. When one reads as many fantasy books as I do, and sees all of the characters swilling ale and wine left and right, it's nice to have a realistic depiction of the effects. Like "GoD, CoL," it is a well-balanced book, fun to read, sympathetic characters, and an exciting storyline.
To sum up, if you like fantasy, and you especially appreciate realistic characterizations, try Tanya Huff out. In this volume, you get two great books for the price of one!
Explore the Nature of Love in Fantastic Worlds.......2001-12-11
Of Darkness, Light & Fire by Tanya Huff
Both of the full length novels were thoroughly enjoyable.
Gate of Darkness, Circle of Light is set in modern day Canada and features a bard, a witch, a wise woman, an agent of light and a flawed goddess out to save the world from darkness. In the Fire's Stone, which is set in a typical fantasy world, a thief a swordsman and a wizard set out to save a country from destruction and mayhem. While the two stories don't seem to have much in common they each feature an unconventional love story, which explores the nature of love.
They were both great stories, and once started, I couldn't put them down. It should be noted though that both stories are reprints from 1989 and 1990.

Each book in this powerful Civil War trilogy from award-winning novelist Lynn Austin's powerful Civil War trilogy offers a unique and shattering perspective on the conflict while exploring the deep affect the war had on the faith of a nation.

Excellent Civil War Series.......2007-06-09
This is an excellent series of books on the Civil War! Although the story line is fictional, they are laced with true history regarding the Civil War. I could hardly put these books down, wondering what would happen next or what decisions the characters would make. We are homeschoolers, and I plan to have my high schoolers read the series for part of our Civil War History unit. They will love them!!!
Great History Lesson For Teens.......2007-03-30
We read the Chronicles of the Kings by Lynn Austin as a family, and because of that (they were "awesome"), my 15 year old daughter wanted to read everything possible that Lynn Austin has written. She read the Refiner's Fire and loved them so much she couldn't put them down, and even read one of the books twice. These volumes will teach your child more about the Civil War that will be unforgettable then any history textbook you'll ever find on the subject.
Wonderful series swept me back in time.......2007-01-16
Amazing series of 3 books from 3 different points of view. These books were heart-tugging page turners! I felt like I really got to know the characters. I felt like I was there in the 1860's.
Fantastic historical fiction. By far one of my favorite series of books. They can even stand alone, especially # 2.
Highly recommended!
Awsome series!!!.......2006-08-11
These books grab you and don't let go..... I read Candle in the Darkness twice now and the second time was better because you can really grasp the message. I hope she will continue this series in another book putting them all together.
Refiner's fire series.......2006-05-02
I just finnished the third book in this series and have been very impressed with the stories. I really enjoyed Fire by Night. The stories had great messages of courage and enduring the trials that God puts into our lives to mold and shape us so we can become His. The books, though religious in nature, were not obviously one denomination or another. They just held simple truths that all christian religions could appreciate. GOOD STUFF!!!!!!!!!!

One night, one child, the Peshtigo fire........1999-06-14
The adventure and mis-adventures of one young lad during the night and day of the great Peshtigo fire in the late 1800's. Focuses on the bravery and courage of a family and touches on the cowardice of some men during the night. A good look into the fears of men and the strength of one family and their son. Especially good reading for people who live in and around the Marinette, Wisconsin, Menominee, Michigan area including Peshtigo, Wisconsin. The one shortcoming I found was that it never specifically mentioned the Peshtigo fire, only that it was a "great fire". Reading level is about 4th grade.
