Book Description
Jessie and Carl have made a terrible mistake. They should have been more careful. When Jonah came to their cabin in the Maine woods, asking to use the phone, they should never have let him in. But he told them his campsite had been robbed and he was stranded with no money and no gear. Jessie took pity on him. She was thinking about her own missing daughter, Sylvie, and hoping she was receiving the same kindness—wherever she was.
So, they invite him in, share their dinner with him, offer him a bed for the night. And they discover that this stranger at their table knows all about them. About Sylvie, their troubled daughter; about the secrets they haven't revealed to each other during forty years of marriage. By morning, they realize the young man has no intention of leaving.
Jessie and Carl are now captives in their own home.
The reader, too, is held captive by this novel that seems to unfold in real time. Over the next twenty-four hours, as Jonah's threats escalate, the couple struggle to outwit him and stay alive. Their attempts to escape force them to change roles, one discovering hidden strength, the other giving in to long-concealed weakness. Exposed, brutalized, and lost, each fights to hold on to sanity at a time when the edge of madness has never seemed so near.
Cynthia Thayer is a novelist who has taken her talent for drawing familiar characters—people we really know—to a new level. In this taut psychological thriller, she pushes them to their limits and shakes their secrets free.
Customer Reviews:
Over the top...too much information and will Carl and Jesse ever "grow some?".......2007-03-08
I am currently listening to the audio version of this book. The book has it's good spots, but I can't wait to finish it. I find myself skipping portions now to get through the slow agony of wondering when Carl and Jesse are EVER going to regain THEIR sanity and really do something to stop the mentally ill "visitor" who mysteriously shows up at their home. It seems like they keep making excuses and rationalizing how they can't stop him. In reality, most people, even more spritely elderly folks would have made more efforts to stop someone from torturing and rape, even though "he had a gun." And then the stories of Carl's memories of his "real" childhood, is just too much being interspered with crazy Jonah and his bag of torture tricks. I just want this to end.
"I just know that I did what I had to do for my own sanity".......2005-03-31
In this tense, horror-fuelled, and totally dramatic literary thriller, author, Cynthia Thayer weaves together the seemingly disparate themes of honesty, madness, and the lengths that people will ultimately go to protect their sanity. Full of incisive observations on the human psyche, A Brief Lunacy shows - with startling realism - what can happen when one single error of judgment can unleash a hornet's nest of violence and bloodshed.
Jessie and Carl are retired married couple living in a cabin in rural Maine, both have had pretty fulfilling lives with Carl having led a distinctive and respectable career as a hip and knee surgeon. They spend their days relaxing, painting trees in the woods, reading books, and gazing at the sea birds on the rocks. Their life is ostensibly full of tranquility, but they continue to be haunted by Sylvie, their beautiful but mentally troubled daughter.
Viewing it as "the family business" both - to a certain extent - blame themselves and each other for how she turned out. At first, things seemed fine, until one day Sylvie explodes in a vitriolic fit of profanity at her school graduation. Now Jessie and Carl sit and worry about their first-born "who has no family of her own and not even a promise of a career."
Eventually sent to an institution, Jessie and Carl do their best to cope with the situation, until a phone call one tranquil October afternoon informs them that their daughter has disappeared. Wracked with worry, they stay by the phone hoping that Sylvie will come to them; she does call, but just spews out a bunch of nonsensical stories. They beg her to come home, frantically holding onto a shred of hope that Sylvie, the old Sylvie, lies somewhere underneath all the craziness, where "it's just a matter of digging her out."
Then, as evening falls, a stranded young man comes to their door seeking shelter and asking to use the phone and - against their better judgment - they let him in. He tells them his campsite has been robbed and he is stranded with no money and no gear. Thinking about her own missing daughter Jessie takes pity on him. She hopes that Sylvie, wherever she may be is receiving the same kindness and compassion.
The man's name is Jonah, and he soon makes himself comfortable. But Carl and Jessie become increasingly uneasy. There's something about this young man that puts them on edge - he knows more about their family than they dare to imagine, and he ignores their hints that he should leave. Unfortunately, Jonah has no intention of leaving as it soon becomes apparent that, like Sylvie he is not only mentally troubled, but also horribly violent.
A day of madness and torture soon falls upon the three of them as they struggle to explicate the ghosts of the past and hold onto their sanity. As the afternoon turns into the night, Jonah becomes progressively more crazed. Constantly popping little white pills, he wipes the corners of his mouth, and jiggles his leg, justifying his actions because "he has God behind him"; like Jonah from the Old Testament, the angry one, and the one who defied God, Jonah explains to them that he's "the boy in the well; the boy no mother could love; the end of the line." But as the evening progresses, it is Jessie and Carl that really come to know one anther, as Carl's true role in the Nazi holocaust is revealed. And Jessie comes to realize that it is only intimacy through art and stories that one can truly understand the mysteries of the human condition.
With a taught, tight narrative that alternates between the voices of Jessie and Carl, Thayer manages to hold the dramatic tension throughout. At once refrained, but also quite unnerving and powerful, her blunt, yet smooth style gradually encapsulates the reader. A Brief Lunacy gets to the steadfast heart of human quandary and insecurity. Jessie, Carl, and Jonah have come together in a violent triptych, yet each is struggling alone, searching for answers for escape and for sanity. Mike Leonard March 05.

Book Description
Terry Brooks is one of a handful of writers whose work defines modern fantasy fiction. His twenty-three international bestsellers have ranged from the beloved Shannara series to stories that tread a much darker path. Armageddon’s Children is a new creation–the perfect opportunity for readers unfamiliar with Brooks’s previous work to experience an author at the height of his considerable storytelling powers. It is a gripping chronicle of a once-familiar world now spun shockingly out of control, in which an extraordinary few struggle to salvage hope in the face of terrifying chaos.
Logan Tom is doomed to remember the past and determined to rescue the future. Far behind him lies a boyhood cut violently short by his family’s slaughter, when the forces of madness and hate swept our world after decadent excesses led to civilization’s downfall. Somewhere ahead of him rests the only chance to beat back the minions of evil that are systematically killing and enslaving the last remnants of humanity. Navigating the scarred and poisoned landscape that once was America and guided by a powerful talisman, Logan has sworn an oath to seek out a remarkable being born of magic, possessed of untold abilities, and destined to lead the final fight against darkness.
Across the country, Angel Perez, herself a survivor of the malevolent, death-dealing forces combing the land, has also been chosen for an uncanny mission in the name of her ruined world’s salvation. From the devastated streets of Los Angeles, she will journey to find a place–and a people–shrouded in mystery, celebrated in legend, and vital to the cause of humankind . . . even as a relentless foe follows close behind, bent on her extermination. While in the nearly forsaken city of Seattle, a makeshift family of refugees has carved out a tenuous existence among the street gangs, mutants, and marauders fighting to stay alive against mounting odds–and something unspeakable that has come from the shadows in search of prey.
In time, all their paths will cross. Their common purpose will draw them together. Their courage and convictions will be tested and their fates will be decided, as their singular crusade begins: to take back, or lose forever, the only world they have.
In Armageddon’s Children, Brooks brings his gifts as a mythmaker to the timeless theme of the unending, essential conflict between darkness and light–and carries his unique imaginative vision to a stunning new level. Prepare for a breathtaking tour de force. To those who are new to Terry Brooks, welcome. And to those who have read him for many years: prepare for a dramatic surprise.

It bogged down in the middle.......2007-10-04
Getting very tired of volumes that bog down in the middle with battle scenes that go on and on. The beginning and first few chapters were excellent, but then it was if the author ran out of steam. Sorry. It just didn't keep my interest.
If Al Gore wrote fanrasy, this is what he would write..........2007-10-02
I wanted to read a fantasy book, not have someone attempt to indoctrinate the evils of our modern civilization. According to this author, we'd all be better off living in tribes, worshiping nature. Meanwhile, people like Al Gore and this guy are among the earths heaviest consumers.
Great Reading.......2007-09-27
This was certainly Terry Brooks at his best -- great reading - went on to the 2nd in the trilogy and can't wait for the 3rd.
Fantastic.......2007-09-24
Loved this book. It is the first book I have read written by Terry Brooks, I have already purchased the next book. It is inventive and original. Kept me spellbound from beginning to end.
Armaggedon's Children - The Genesis of Shannara book 1.......2007-09-03
Terry Brooks has become one of my favorite authors. The first book I read of his was Knight of the Word. I loved the book and quickly read "Running with the Demon" and "Angel Fire East". I have been waiting for this sequel for a long time and I was not disappointed. I'm looking forward to the remaining two books to complete this trilogy.

Armageddon Summer provides a front-row seat for the type of event most of us only witness on a TV screen. Reverend Raymond Beelson is gathering 144 "Believers" atop Mount Weeupcut in Massachusetts to camp out, pray, and await Armageddon--July 27, 2000--when he predicts that his faithful flock will be saved as the rest of the world is set ablaze in fire and brimstone. We experience the month leading up to this climax through the eyes of two teenagers who have never met before, Jed and Marina, each of whom have come to the compound out of a sense of responsibility toward their families. Young Jed is only on the mountain to watch over his father who "went a little crazy" after his wife left the family: "When my father told me that the world was going to end I figured he was making some sort of weird joke." Jed's sarcasm, humor, and flippancy toward the Believers does not erase the love he feels for his newly devout father, nor his capacity for empathy toward members of the congregation. Marina is a Believer, or so she tries to be, in the hope that somehow her faith will restore harmony to her family. She has traveled to the mountain with her younger brothers at her mother's fervent insistence, but her fear that her father will remain below with the rest of the nonbelievers to burn alive unnerves her.
Coauthors Jane Yolen and Bruce Coville artfully sculpt the alternating voices and perspectives of Marina and Jed, and readers will be swept up in the thoughts and emotions of these complex young people. The skillful writing raises this novel above others--these characters are immensely believable as they struggle with matters of family and faith, while maintaining a smart, convincingly adolescent outlook. Excerpts from sermons, FBI files, camp schedules, and e-mails keep the story lively and suspenseful, as the Believers begin to stockpile weapons and the media adds fuel to the flames. But perhaps more resonant than the apocalyptic ending are the careful, distinct portraits of the two teens, thrust into a frightening situation that shuttles them suddenly into adulthood. (Ages 12 to 16) --Brangien Davis
Book Description
The world will end on Thursday, July 27, 2000. At least, that’s what Reverend Beelson has told his congregation. That’s why Marina and Jed and their parents have joined the rest of the Reverend’s flock at a mountain retreat to await the end of the world. But this world has only just begun for Jed and Marina, two teenagers with more attitude than faith. Why should the world end now, when they’ve just fallen in love for the first time?
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Young Adult Book.......2007-04-11
ARMAGEDDON SUMMER is an excellent book for young adults that can be enjoyed by more sophisticated adult readers as well. It reminded me a great deal of Paul Zindel's classic THE PIGMAN both in how the story alternates between a boy and a girl narrating the story and in how the teenagers are often the more sane members of their families. Aside from the voices of the teens radio talk show transcripts, sermon excerpts, and E mails are utilized to tell the story. Yolen and Coville do a great job of handling the characters in the book who hold very unusual religious beliefs respectfully and humanely. And yes the ending did take me by surprise.
Armageddon Summer- a must read........2007-04-10
Do you have that certain book you always check out from the library and re-read, just because it feels like an old friend, and you can't get enough of it?
That's Armageddon Summer for me.
This book follows the lives of two very different kids. Marina Marlow is a homeschooled girl who loves Emily Dickenson poems. Recently, her mom has decided to follow the beliefs of Reverend Beelson- and he says that the world will end on July twenty-seventh- and it will do so in fire. How convenient- right when Marina turns fourteen! Her mother drags Marina and her five brothers up to the mountain- the only place where God will spare people- and leave her dad to be "Fried". Marina is torn, and doesn't know what to believe.
Sixteen year old Jed is dragged up on the mountain too, but not by his mother. His mom ran off with a photographer to live in the mountains in Colorado, and he's stuck with his weepy dad, who turned to religion to cope with the devastating break up. He doesn't believe any of this crap, and has smuggled in a computer- which is against the rules.
This book details the experiences in each of their perspectives, and eventually they both notice each other. As the book progresses, they begin to know each other better.
Armageddon Summer is five stars for me- you should read it too!
Fantastico!.......2006-08-17
This book was an amazing read, I've been re-reading it for years. It has a compelling plot and the characters are realistic. This novel excels in the area of teen narrators and makes the story all the more believable. In the end, you really have to decide, who are the bad guys? It explores the world of grey in cults and their beliefs.
If you liked this, try John Marsden's Tomorrow, when the War Began.
A Unique Book.......2006-06-17
Novels written in the first person aren't very common; good novels written in the first person are even less so. This YA book is narrated by its main characters, Marina and Jed, who meet each other at a mountaintop encampment to await the end of the world. This style allows the authors to develop them into deep, likeable characters (and it takes a while to do so).
Realistic settings are vividly described and neatly merged with actual places. After Marina and Jed tell this story, you might be tempted to search for the (fictional) events in old newspapers!
Yes, this is a love story, but it's not junior chick-lit. It's an adventure, too. After about the middle of the book, the plot tightens. Although the climax occurs shy of the end, what comes after salvages hope from the ashes of the "armageddon."
The coauthors have done a fine job presenting the religious aspects of this story in a very non-judgmental and inoffensive way. It does not appear they are pushing a particular view--something to consider when choosing a young adult novel.
Most anyone with a young heart will enjoy ARMAGEDDON SUMMER.
-Mike Kelley,
Author of "Violent Night"
AS Review.......2006-05-30
The title of this book pretty much describes the plot. Two teenagers, Jed and Marina, narrate the story of armageddon.
This book was at first very uninteresting, but the boredom was lifted later on. However, I couldn't relate or appeal to the two narrating characters, although they were well thought out to give variety of viewpoint to the conflict of the plot. Also, I didn't enjoy the pre-climactic reading. The book didn't hold my interest well.
I didn't enjoy this book too much. I would recommend Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins's Left Behind series over this, for better plot development, characters, and pretty much every other novel component.

Excellent book!.......2007-03-29
Battle-weary Marshall Brant of the Black Templars returns home after leading his Space Marines to victory through countless campaigns. But all hopes of respite soon fade when they find their planet, Solemnus, under savage attack from battle hungry orks. After a desperate struggle, Brant finds his forces are all but destroyed and the honour of the Chapter stained with blood. His vow for revenge takes him to the fiery shores of Armageddon - a sulphurous world synonymous with war and into the heat of battle!
Good story, good book.......2005-12-02
While it wasn't a all-nighter type book I liked this one quit a bit . It is very descriptive, however I feel that this adds to the enjoyability of the story rather than takes away.
This is a very very bad book.......2005-12-01
There are a number of problems here ... the plot, the characterisation and the writing spring instantly to mind. It's a shame, because the subject matter is fantastic and it had so much potential. Nevermind.
A very good warhammer book........2004-08-28
I got this book and then put it down because I thought it was boring. About 7 months later I picked it back up and loved it. It has the space marine side of the story and some sections with a team of imperial guardsmen who seem to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. Anyhoo, If you have a Black Templar or Steel legion army then I would get this book and if you like warhammer then get this book. You'l love it.
Not impressed.......2004-05-27
Like the others here, I thought this book was wordy to the point of boredom. 40k books are, in my opinion, renowned for their lean writing and dynamic pacing. Green seems to do better with his short stories, but here I got the impression he was being verbose for the sake of filling pages. I do not plan on buying his next book, Iron Hands.

EPIC SCI-FI MANHWA.......2005-06-30
I liked Armageddon 1, and things get more mysterious and secretive as Um-ji and He-Sung learn the truth about mysterious transfer student, Mari Jang. Why is it ALWAYS the mysterious transfer student, anyway?
The plot and action pick up considerably as now we have Matrix like guys in suits after He-sung. And the discovery of a mansion which is said to be Mari's "home." How does it all relate is still the big question. While the plot seems to stretch a little, I guess that's to be expected in such a long story. There are a lot of questions I'm waiting for answers to, but since Armageddon 3 isn't out yet, I suppose I'll have to wait.

END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT.......2005-06-30
Manhwa in general has such a unique style. While some retain more manga-esque elements, Armageddon is not one of them. In fact, Armageddon is rather unique amongst the many types of manhwa I've read so far.
The story is classic sci-fi as the world as we know it has been destroyed only to be rebuilt several billion years later. The main action is set in Seoul and revolves around a small confused and immature boy named He-Sung. Having strange odd dreams about far away galaxies, they seem to be coming true when a new transfer student looks exactly like the woman in his dreams.
Things get weirder when the transfer student shoots laser beams out of her eyes to stop an assassin. The manhwa then ends with He-Sung lying on the floor. What will happen next? Guess we'll have to wait until Armageddon 2
WIth comedy, sci-fi, romance and action, Armageddon is definitely an epic in the making.
