Book Description
So what's it like to be a travel writer? Best job in the world? How do you become one? Does it answer the question of what we are all doing on this planet anyway?
"Turkey: Bright Sun, Strong Tea" is the story of a US Peace Corps Volunteer who went to Turkey as an English teacher and ended up being one of the world's most prominent travel writers. Along the way, Brosnahan starred in a movie, sipped champagne with 'fat capitalists' in the sultan's gilded palace, fell in love at a circumcision party, almost got eaten by wolves on the Iranian border, drank endless glasses of strong tea...and discovered the meaning of life.

Praise for Bright Sun, Strong Tea.......2005-12-13
While planning a trip to Turkey, I ran across Tom Brosnahan's website, www.TurkeyTravelPlanner.com. I discovered Bright Sun, Strong Tea and purchased the book, not really expecting too much, but I am an avid reader when it comes to a subject I am interested in. Was I surprised, first with Mr. Brosnahan's writing style and secondly with the wealth of information he gives the reader through his experiences and expertise, all with great wit and humor. This is a wonderfully, entertaining and well written book of Mr. Brosnahan's experiences with the Peace Corps in Turkey, fresh out of college, and how that experience develops into his career as one of the best travel writers the business has ever known, particularly Frommer's and Lonely Planet. The author brings Turkey to life through his descriptions and characters. His expertise on where to go, what to do, and thouhtful insight on the Tukish people and their customs are invaluable. I'm ready to hop on the plane today and regret I only have a fraction of time to spend exploring this rich and wonderful country. A must read if you are planning a trip to Turkey, a great read for any reason.
Treasures of Turkey .......2005-10-12
The sights, sounds and smells of this exotic country come through every page of Tom Brosnahan's adventures in Turkey:
Bright Sun, Strong Tea is a book that takes you back to a time when Peace Corps Volunteers discovered a country steeped in history and hospitality, and a country that continues to offer a rich tapestry of cultural history, awesome geograpy, gastronomic delights and untold treasures to discover.
Tom's book combines biography, travel and love into an engaging story that puts you smack in the middle of Anatolia and invites you to go see for yourself.
And it's all true: I know. I was a Peace Corps Volunteer there myself.
A Great Book by a Great Travel Writer!!.......2005-08-23
Reading travel books is always interesting and leaves you wanting (or not) to go to that country of travel. Tom Brosnahan has taken his passion of writing Guide books to writing his experience in a country still somewhat foreign to many North Americans. He places Turkey in the well deserved position it has tried so hard to be noticed for, it's People, Culture and a land of History. The stories take place in the late 60's at a time things were changing.I think this book will make you want to get on the next flight out (maybe even to stay awhile and teach english). If your thinking of going to Turkey have a read through this book first. It is a great book and goes well with Tom's Brosnahan past Turkey guide book from Lonely Planet.
Bright Sun, Bright Author and Strong Tea Too.......2005-08-19
I picked up this wonderful read for preparation for my year teaching in Istanbul. This book is much more than I expected. I loved following Tom's journey as a Peace Corp volunteer in Turkey, beginning in the 1970's. This story contains humor, candor, tons of useful information for travel in Turkey and even a love story! Even if you never plan to travel to the only city in Asia and Europe (Istanbul) it is an intelligent, fantasically
written account on one man's experience and worth the purchase for sure. Oh.....the tea is really strong.
Bright indeed!.......2005-07-28
My response to "Bright Sun, Strong Tea is from the viewpoint of another Peace Corps Volunteer who served in Turkey around the same time as Tom Brosnahan did. His observations about the people and places of Turkey do reflect what many of us experienced, and which he expresses with real affection and good humor. This is a fun book to read and one with truth behind it, for the armchair traveler as well as others, and certainly a look into the the life of one young American Peace Corps Volunteer.

Book Description
A powerful story of one man's redemption through the Lakota Sun Dance ceremony.
• Written by the only white man to be confirmed as a Sundance Chief by traditional Lakota elders.
• Includes forewords by prominent Lakota spiritual leaders Leonard Crow Dog, Charles Chipps, Mary Thunder, and Jamie Sams.
The Sun Dance is the largest and most important ceremony in the Lakota spiritual tradition, the one that ensures the life of the people for another year. In 1988 Michael Hull was extended an invitation to join in a Sun Dance by Lakota elder Leonard Crow Dog-- a controversial action because Hull is white. This was the beginning of a spiritual journey that increasingly interwove the life of the author with the people, process, and elements of Lakota spirituality. On this journey on the Red Road, Michael Hull confronted firsthand the transformational power of Lakota spiritual practice and the deep ambivalence many Indians had about opening their ceremonies to a white man.
Sun Dancing presents a profound look at the elements of traditional Lakota ceremonial practice and the ways in which ceremony is regarded as life-giving by the Lakota. Through his commitment to following the Red Road, Michael Hull gradually won acceptance in a community that has rejected other attempts by white America to absorb its spiritual practices, leading to the extraordinary step of his confirmation as a Sun Dance Chief by Leonard Crow Dog and other Lakota spiritual leaders.

More ceremony stealing........2007-03-01
If Jamie Sams likes it, you know it's more New Age pablum. Real ceremonial and spiritual knowledge are attained by doing and at the feet of our elders, relatives. The fact that this book attempts to use (and make profit from, I might add) one of the most sacred of all ceremonies disturbs me greatly.
Thank you for sharing your life........2001-09-11
I want to thank Mike for writing this life story to share with others seeking some peace and happiness. The author shows a deep sense of despair over a life seemingly not worth living, and gives a personal account of his growth and recovery through native american ceremonies, specifically, the sun dance. His story is filled with elders' teachings and anecdotes that offer a glimpse into a path at once ancient and new. I honor those on this path and those seeking recovery from lifeways that no longer work. Read this and find hope for your own life through Mike's story.
A Spiritual Journey.......2001-05-02
Excellent reading from an educational or spiritual point of view. The clear language, content, and message helped me to look at myself from a new point of view. Michael's use of humor drew me in. His journey is that of a true human being. A look at recovery and healing through practice of Sacred Lakota ceremony. Truly an inspiration.

It is truly amazing that Mr. Hull has been able to guilt this many friends and family into writing reviews for him. Brava!

Inside And Outside His Head.......2000-03-09
The Road to the World's End is an amazing book, particularly with regard to style. The content is as simple as it gets--the maturing of a young boy, Anders, as he grows from the age of three to adolescence, on a farm in Norway. However, as in the works of Joyce--this book in feels like a blending of Ulysses and Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, the simple story is set forth with an incredibly dense and beautiful narrative, with shifting perspectives and intense descriptions of the psychological imagery of the mind of a young boy as he experiences and re-experiences events in his life. You see the world through the eyes of Anders, though there is often, as in Ulysses, a sudden shift in narrative to another character, or to an unknown thrid person commentator. What holds the book together so well is the prose, which even in translation into English is poetic, dense, and mysterious. Must be incredible in the original Norwegian! I am now trying to find other novels by Hoel, which are all out of print, seeing if they can match the splendor of this book--it really left me surprised and spellbound--one of the best books I have ever read.

A Hard Road, An Inspiring Read.......2002-07-26
A friend of mine suggested this book to me, I told me it would be worth the effort taken to find it. I couldn't agree more. The life story of Manny Twofeathers told in his words is a inspiration.
Manny is by no means a polished author, but the plain language and the raw presentation help to make this a much more compelling and effective book.
With some of the graphic descriptions of the sacrifices and ceremony involved in the Sundances,
I would suggest this book to anyone who is looking for some inspiration as they make there way through a long and troubled journey.
For anyone who really wants to understand the Sundance.......1999-06-10
As one who knows Manny and is a Sundancer I recommend this book to anyone who truely wants some understanding of this most beautiful and powerful prayer. Manny's descriptions of how he got to this road and the road he traveled are straightforward and descriptive without loosing the respect for the ceremony. He describes the heart it takes to follow the Sundance Road.
Very spiritually eye opening. Fantastic!.......1998-04-18
Road to Sundance is very well written and enlightening. I thank Manny Twofeathers for telling us of his journey. anyone who has any interest in Indian traditions or is looking for their spiritual path should read this. Ambyr
A strong lession of true sprituality and commetment........1998-02-18
I found myself identifying with the authors sense of wandering and how he found his true spirit within the sundance. The path he chose was not easy nor seen as sensable. Yet through his commitment and spiritual awarness, the author was able to achive the greater sense of self we all desire.

Deification of Mao.......2002-02-01
This book represents a credible attempt to add new perspectives (in many cases revolutionary ones) to a significant era in the Chinese political, military, and social landscape.
In my opinion, it fundamentally flawed in that the foundation of the entire work is the fervently-held premise that Mao was omnipotent during this relevant period. In attributing God-like qualities to this one mortal politician/demagogue, Dr. Teiwes and Dr. Sun create the universe of possible conclusions in advance of the critical analyses. Therefore, a tragedy of incredible magnitude (starvation of +35 million Chinese) is attributed not to a convergence of critical events (including environmental, political, and social) but instead to the actions or inactions of one man. Dr. Teiwes is known as a strong proponent of Mao-centrist philosophy so it is understandable that he holds Mao in this true sense of filial piety. Mao truly would be proud.
I think that this book has some value to the scholar of Chinese history and the legions of Mao proponents worldwide.

Book Description
"I've traveled a lot of roads, but never alone. My relations are with me," says Billie McKenney, one of the matriarchs of the complex family of Choctaws searching for peace as the white world rapidly encroaches on their tribal land, politics, and values.
In her first collection of stories, Native American writer Devon A. Mihesuah chronicles the lives of several generations of a close-knit Choctaw family as they are forced from their traditional homeland in 19th-century Mississippi and endure unspeakable sorrows during their journey before settling in southeastern Oklahoma.
Unfolding through the voices and actions of family members, confused half-bloods, and unlikely heroes--not all of them living or even human--the stories tell of the horrors of forced removal, the turbulence of post Civil War Indian Territory, the terrifying violence suffered at the hands of immortal Crow witches, and the family's ultimate survival against forces of evil. Time-traveling ghosts, mysterious medicine men, and eerie shape-shifters share the pages with proud matriarchs, mischievous schoolgirls, and loving siblings. Together, these interwoven stories express the strength and persistence of a tribe whose identity and pride have survived the disruptions of colonialism.

Book Description
Known as the little people, the ferrishyn, the wee folk, and the good neighbors, faeries have enchanted humans for centuries. But faeries are much more than playful sprites who frolic in gardens and dance on flowers by the morning light. A comprehensive tome on a bewitching subject, THE ANCIENT ART OF FAERY MAGICK will initiate you into a life filled with faery sparkle and pixie dust.
Customer Reviews:
... Ugh..........2007-09-27
Just another fantasy/nonsense Conway book. Stick with the authors who really *know* about Faery - such as RJ Stewart or Orion Foxwood.
Clap your hands and say, "I believe!".......2007-08-28
I was pleasantly surprised after purchasing this book by D.J. Conway, who seems to have gotten a bad reputation as a "fluffy" and "inaccurate" author on the market. Ever since childhood, I was always interested in fairies (the Fae) and the legends and lore surrounding them, but I didn't know which book to get to help quench my thirst for that knowledge. I will admit that I originally looked at this book for its price, which rivaled most of the other books on the Fae out on the market, and I got my money's worth for sure.
With different stories about the Fae and ways to contact them, this is a great book for anyone who is just curious to know more about faeries.
