Book Description
Dr. Grandin and Barron address the social challenges those with autism and Asperger's face, explaining in the process how confusing and illogical normal societal rules can be. They also address the "unwritten rules" that most children understand instinctively but are a mystery to those on the spectrum. They teach how to trust feelings, be assertive in a positive way, and deal with negative people and situations.
Customer Reviews:
great content, could have used better editing.......2007-08-09
I'm a big fan of Temple Grandin's books, and couldn't wait to pick this one up. It's the first time I've been disappointed.
This book contains a lot of fascinating information and insight, both about autism and about the rules that govern "neurotypical" social life. There's nothing like having an outsider's perspective - "beginner's mind" - to realize all the things you take for granted.
My disappoinment, though, lies in the book's very sloppy editing. Spelling and grammatical errors pop out at least every 3 pages or so. Stylistically, much of the writing reads like a first draft: stiff, clunky, stilted, and loaded with cliches. The potential for good writing is there, if only a judicious editor had been around to help clean up the mistakes and suggest stylistic improvements. I don't expect a Thackeray or Joan Didion here, but the persistent grammatical & spelling errors distract severely from the content.
Interestingly, Temple Grandin's segments (the book is written in three voices, Dr. Grandin's, Mr. Barron's, and their editor's) are by far the best written of anything in the book. This surprised me, since she is such a visual thinker and has written in the past about her difficulty with language. It just goes to show that practice makes perfect: even an incredibly non-verbal thinker like Temple Grandin has, over time, perfected a lucid, funny, readable, down-to-earth, straight-shooting yet graceful prose style.
Recommend to anyone.......2007-06-27
As a parent of a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder, I found the writing in this book very information and very helpful. It helped to help bridge the gap between the thinking of an individual with ASD and those identified as neurotypicals.
Practical Wisdom.......2007-06-15
This book has been so helpful to me in understanding my son( who is mildly autistic). It also has been helpful to him--a few times a week we sit down and read thru one of the "rules" listed in the book, for example, "fitting in is often tied to looking and sounding like you fit in" and "everyone makes mistakes--it doesn't have to ruin your day". He particularly relates to the anecdotes that Temple and Sean share about their lives that relate to the rule. I think he feels less alone knowing that others have the same struggles that he does and I am grateful for how honest the authors are, (usually at their own expense!)in relating their experiences. It also is very readable. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has a loved one with autism or Asperger's.
Fascinating Guide to Understanding & Teaching the Autistic Mind.......2007-03-29
Fascinating. One author with minimal, and one with maximum, emotionally-influenced autism, provides a range of insights for understanding and teaching minds on the autistic spectrum.
One important theme is that professionals often don't know what they are talking about and may do more harm than good, though many are trying and helping. Often, determined parents and common sense are the best approach, though understanding how to teach the autistic mind is difficult.
For example, one mother was aggravated over her son's tracking dirt in, constantly telling him to wipe his shoes and punishing him over time. One day she noticed as he came in that he bent down and carefully wiped the top of his shoes. Once she demonstrated what she meant by wiping one's shoes, there was no more problem.
Kids are unique. Being corrected about how to place eating utensils and napkins at a dinner table is a helpful learning experience for Temple, but a depressing condemnation for Sean. He sees his error as incompetence and something everyone else knows. Must first gain a perspective on how important this error is in the broader scheme of things.
The first half gives insights into how these two learned things and why they had troubles. The second half of the book gives ten rules of life that autism makes it difficult to understand and suggests ways of teaching these.
Wonderfully informative.......2007-02-06
I am a teacher and we are the parents of a child with Asperger's Disorder who has many of the same issues that both authors had to deal with as children. This book is so extremely insightful and such a huge assistance for educators to see how and what they say to children has an affect upon a child's behaviors - good and bad. As a parent this book is a reaffirmation thay with love and patience - and consistency - good things can and do come true.
I would highly recommend this book to any person who has a difficult child in their home and wants to better understand the positions from which that child may be working. This book is for parents of any child, not just a child with autism.

An excellent primer for anyone interested in the subject.......2000-04-15
This book is part of an excellent 5 book series dealing with democratization. In this particular tome, different perspectives are used to explain the transition from authoritarianism to democracy. The importance of international actors, bureaucracies, entrepreneurs, the military, and economic conditions are examined to explain how transitions take place. Although some perspectives are county specific, all of them can be expanded to explain many cases around the world. All of the authors are experts in the field and the essays are highly readable.

Expanding Benedict.......2006-11-07
This book does not come near the level of Joan Chittester, but it is a helpful expansion, offering slightly different insights and approaches to the rule. Read Chittester first.
A blend of scholarly scrutiny and Benedictine love in examining the Rule of Saint Benedict.......2005-12-13
Written by Sister Aquinata Bockmann, a member of the Benedictine Missionary Sisters of Tutzing, Germany and experienced professor of spirituality and theology, Perspectives on the Rule of Saint Benedict: Expanding Our Hearts in Christ is a blend of scholarly scrutiny and Benedictine love in examining the Rule of Saint Benedict, specifically vv. 1-4, 45-50 of the prologue and chapters 72, 73, 58, and 53. Line by line, the ancient text is scrutinized from both past and contemporary viewpoints, while never losing sight of the christological nature of the Rule itself. Researched in depth and heavily annotated, Perspectives on the Rule of Saint Benedict is methodical in its dissection of intent word by word as it is passionate about the needs of the spirit. A deeply theological and worshipful treatise.

Book Description
The key to Gorbachev's reforms is the creation of a state in which the rule of law is sovereign. In this book Soviet and British and American jurists discuss the nature and role of the law in society, and assess the possibilities and difficulties of establishing a legal system based on the values and principles of Western democracies in the USSR.
Among the topics covered are the role of a constitution, the status of political parties, the importance of glasnost, the question of individual rights and the meaning of pluralism.
Book Description
This study of six historians from the edges of the Roman world at the end of the Republic - the author of I Maccabees, Posidonius, Diodorus Siculus, Pompeius Trogus, Nicolaus of Damascus, and Memnon of Heraclea - combines discussion of their biographical details, the intellectual and elite culture in which they composed, and the methodological difficulties of interpreting fragmentary texts, with textual analysis of their representations of Rome. These authors show remarkable unity in their acceptance of Roman hegemony. Nevertheless, their interpretations of Roman rule assume political significance in the light of their intentions in writing and the audiences whom they addressed. They therefore provide a unique insight into the minds of the conquered peoples and the intellectual culture which allowed them to influence their conquerors.
Book Description
On April 3, 1945, the advancing American army shells the historic town of Lohenfelde, and the Kaiser-Wilhelm museum. Within the museum's vaults, Heinrich Hoffer is hiding from the bombardment, and trying to keep a priceless Van Gogh from falling into the hands of a rogue Nazi. After the shelling, an American corporal, Neal Parry, finds a beautiful eighteenth-century oil painting in the rubble, and must confront both its beauty, and the morality of stealing it. The stories of Herr Hoffer, Parry, and their paintings unfold simultaneously in this gripping, brilliantly structured novel about art and war.

Something lacking........2007-01-31
A small German town is being overrun by US forces in WWII. There are two parallel stories, that of the director of the local art museum, and of a US squad leader, who is a commercial artist and would be fine artist. Interestingly, the action involving the squad leader occurs several hours after the action involving the director, although the two stories are related and interwoven. The squad leader's story is not very good; fortunately, it is the smaller part of the novel, which includes the art director's reflections on past events. The art director is well intentioned, and if he is not very brave, he has taken chances in behalf of the integrity of the museum's collection. While he dislikes the Nazis, that cannot be said for all his employees or his wife, but they are all treated with understanding. The novel is very competently written, and the historical dimension adds a lot. Still, something is missing. It takes a special talent to get the reader involved when there is little suspense, and the characters are rather pedestrian, trying to live simple lives with modest ambitions and not much emotion, and Thorpe does not fully succeed. I noticed I was always more interested when the action involved a secondary character, an highly intelligent, ambitious, art loving Nazi official.
Book Description
It is over twenty years since Jared Diamond focused attention on the possible existence of assembly rules for communities. Since then there has been a proliferation of studies trying to promote, refute, or test the idea that there are sets of constraints (rules) on community formation and maintenance (assembly). This timely volume brings together carefully selected contributions which examine the question of the existence and nature of assembly rules with some rigor and in some detail, using both theoretical and empirical approaches in a variety of systems. The result is a balanced treatment which encompasses a wide range of topics within ecology including competition and coexistence, conservation and biodiversity, niche theory, and biogeography. As such it provides much to interest a broad audience of ecologists, while also making an important contribution to the study of community ecology in particular.

This comparative study of electoral procedures, trends, and key issues is the first to deal with the representation of women and minorities around the world. Wilma Rule and Joseph Zimmerman have brought together an international team of scholars who show why there is gross underrepresentation of women and minorities internationally and who analyze the cultural, socio-economic, and political barriers to their future electoral successes. The scholars describe the current situation in 20 countries in various regions and point to ways for women and minorities to enhance positions politically. This text is intended for courses in comparative politics, political parties and elections, women in politics, and minority politics.

Customer Reviews:
In Dr. Stasheff's defense.......2005-12-05
After reading the other two reviews, I felt I should put in my slightly more informed two cents. The complaint that this book reads as a set of short stories instead of a straight stream of thought can be justified by the fact that IT IS A COLLECTION OF SHORT STORIES. My wife and I have been reading these stories since before they were published. An important thing to remember is that the author is a professor in a field where most students are lucky if they can actually do half of their job right. (alas, poor comm majors)At this particular university, the most common excuse a professor hears is "my computer lost it" in matters concerning research, homework, and any other thing that computers can possibly be blamed for. This book is nothing to be taken seriously. Read it in the same mindset that you would read HHGTTG, or Dirk Gently. If you try to be more serious than that, then the book will make absolutely no sense. (the name St. Vidicon of Cathode should have been a hint.) The four stars are so that I don't appear too biased
ouch..........2005-06-01
This book was a horrible disappointment.
It initially sounds interesting: A wanna be Saint and his assistant help people that are having technical problems, and for his help the Saint advises the assistant in his love life. Interesting, right?
The reality is more confusing than interesting.
First of all is the problem with it is the book's flow. It's more like a series of short stories about the same general characters. There is almost no transition between the assistant's real life and his battles against a variety of technological demons, added to the fact that the fights themselves are more confusing than interesting.
The aspect of the story that talks about the assistant and his relationship to his girlfriend is confusing as well.
So does he do it or not (you'll understand of you read the book)?
Besides, how good of advice about your love life would a celibate Catholic Priest give?
fine stand alone.......2005-03-30
The Catholic Church is poor with members leaving every day to join Reverend Sun's organization. In one last desperate measure, the pope goes on television to show why the church must survive. The equipment they use to televise the pontiff is old but Father Vidicon repairs the apparatus until he receives a shock and dies; thanks to his perseverance the show went on and the church is saved.
People pray to Father Vidicon, who they want to make a saint, to help them when Finagles General Principle operates in their lives. Father Vidicon who is fighting the minions of the imp of the perverse is busy answering all prayers. His solution is to find an assistant who is smart and to help those who need some spiritual help. He contacts computer technician Tony Ricci threw his writings on the computer screen directing him where to go to help people in need. In return Father Vidicon gives advice to Tony about the woman to loves who he met when company's computers were showing the writings of Father Vidicon.
Christopher Stasheff, the author of the famous warlock series, uses a contemporary setting but with the same humor in his latest work, SAINT VIDICON TO THE RESCUE. This novel is really a series of vignettes where Tony or Father Vidicon are helping people who are entangled with Finagles General Principle and Murphy's law. The spirit and the man communicate through dreams and a computer. When Tony works on solving a prayer he is a spirit that can become any size he chooses to get the job done. This is a stand alone book that will please fans of this talented author.
