4 out of 5 stars Half fact, half rationalization.......2005-02-07

Offers an fascinating look into the cocaine business and drug-lord culture but there is a constant theme of rationalization.
Mermelstein was "forced" to move from ambitious but law-abiding citizen to criminal mastermind simply because he married a nice woman from Colombia - a victim of circumstances at gunpoint. One of his wife's home boys made him an offer he could not refuse (or so he says). He describes in detail the brutal, psychopathic actions of the company he kept but continually reminds us that he was not like that. He kept his hands and nose clean. He was simply a logistics wonk putting in a day's work for a very handsome salary. Well, he did take one hit contract but he had no choice in the matter. He had no idea that the business he was in was ruining the lives of millions of Americans.
He finally was "victimized" by his nationality and betrayed by his co-workers. (Dude, what did you think was gonna happen?) So he turned informant.
He did all of 2 1/2 years in lockup, often in fairly comfortable conditions. (In some states, street dealers do a hard 10-20 still today.)
He bought his way out of the consequences of his actions by ratting on everyone and went into witness protection.
Like many of his ilk, he repeatedly informs us that he was a dedicated family man, a devoted and loving husband and father. He intersperses these characterizations with brothel orgy vignettes and tales of his extravagant lifestyle.
All in all, an informative and titillating read despite the smarmy self-portrayal.

Book Description

Senator Kip Davies is dead, shot execution-style by a man news reports call a member of "an ultra-right-wing militia" from Maine. The hunt for the killer is nationwide, and yet the wounded assassin, Robert Drummond, has found refuge where he might least expect it-in the home of an out-of-town senator. There, the senator's wife and daughter become Drummond's protectors-if not his hostages-while he grows stronger during the next several heart-pulsing weeks. As they become intimately involved with Drummond, the two women learn firsthand the philosophy and psychology of the militia movement that has become such a terrifying puzzlement in America. And when their desperate drama ends, in a fashion at once unpredictable and inevitable, it brings with it a measure of understanding of how this country functions and dysfunctions.

1 out of 5 stars An embarrassingly poor piece of writing.......2007-01-07

This novel is not worth the reader's time and energy, to say nothing of investment. It is miserably written--full of cliches, contradictions in description, irrelevant detail, and simple-minded prose. It would be useful only as example to my English students on 'what not to do.' It surely did not have an editor. The story is unbelieveable and full of gratuitous description of male genitals; the identity of the narrator is never clear--other than the author apparently preaching her politics in the form of the 'royal we.' The dog in the story achieves godlike omniscience. All of the book's shallow and juvenile blather makes one hope any serious militia member would distance himself from this as presentation of worthwhile ideas. It insults the reader with its lack of depth.

4 out of 5 stars A political philosphy not often seen in mainstream fiction.......2001-12-03

I read Carolyn Chute's first novel, "The Beans of Egypt, Maine" in 1985. It introduced me to a world of the working poor in a rural area of Maine and I remember how it opened my eyes to their poverty. In "Snow Man", Ms. Chute's fourth novel, some of this territory is familiar. But unlike her other book, this is not a big rambling family saga. Instead, it is a tightly drawn and fast paced story of an urban terrorist, Robert Drummond, a member of a militia, who publicly murders a senator in Boston. Wounded, he flees to the home of another senator who is off in Washington, and therefore away from his home at the time. Here, this second senator's wife and daughter nurse the fugitive back to health and hide him from the authorities.

Ms. Chute's prose is tense and clear although she has a tendency to use words like "orangey" a little too often. She's particularly good at describing wounds and Robert Drummond's painful shoulder wound is a throbbing reminder of his discomfort. But the rest of his hiding-out time certainly is pleasant and there's seduction at play here too, and not just on a physical level. He's portrayed as a strong and sympathetic character and we hear his philosophy of life over and over again. It's shown in bitter contrast to the life of the two upper class women taking care of him. For example, when he tells them his wife had to go out and get a job, the senator's daughter, who just happens to be a professor of women's studies, makes a comment about the need for women to pursue careers and get out of the house. Then she asks what kind of job his wife got. Robert's answer is simple - "McDonalds". There are constant references like that illustrating yuppie naivety about what it means to be poor in America.

I read this novel quickly as the story moved along well, but I just couldn't get into the characters. It seemed unlikely that the two women would become so enamored with this man even though he comes across as attractive and macho. All the people are stereotypes, created by Ms. Chute to forward her own political philosophy. In a way this is refreshing because it is a philosophy not often seen in mainstream fiction. But I never really understood why Robert Drummond's frustration with his poverty and anger about corporate greed would make him want to take the life of another human being. I wonder though, if I, too, am just being naïve.

Those who might want a glimpse into the thought processes of a militiaman might find this book interesting. However, it is only a glimpse and doesn't go deep enough. And the story, while well crafted, is basically superficial.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2001-07-25

I anticipated another wonderful Carolyn Chute book when I picked this one up. I did not find any of the colorful characters and unique story that she has entertained me with in the past. It was so far off from her other books, it makes me wonder where she wrote it and why she wrote it.

2 out of 5 stars Snow Job.......2001-04-05

I guess I'm still just looking for someone to tell me why this book was ever written. Intrigued by The Beans of Egypt Maine and amazed at the breadth and perceptiveness and sheer wonder of Merry Men, despite it's controversial characters, I was struck dumb with disappointment for days after reading Snow Man. The characters are shallow and inconsistent (all of them-- left, right and center). The plot could have been taken from any murder "mystery." And the theme was not only blatantly sensational, but worse, devoid of any real substance. Chute opens the book with the warning that this is only a preview of a larger work to come, more fully exploring right-wing militias. If this is the way she's going to approach them, let's hope she was only kidding. Skip it, and bring us the next Merry Men!

5 out of 5 stars The Radical Chic Blanch.......2000-04-04

This is the best thing Chute has ever written. So why did it turn her into an unperson among the literary elite? Ostensibly because her hero is a right-wing militiaman who assassinates a US Senator. But the assassination is shown to be a rather horrid affair: no glorification there. And this right-winger's heroes are all Latin American left wing guerillas. And aside from a bitterness toward the rich and powerful, the hero does not express his views with any degree of coherence, so this is not right wing propaganda.

To find out why this book has caused Ms. Chute to be dropped from the A list, you have to go back to Tom Wolfe's Radical Chic. Underlying the limousine liberal's love affair with the Black Panthers was a certain sense of superiority and contempt for the blacks they pretended to listen to. It was the same reason why Ms. Chute was lionized for her earlier books about the Maine equivalent of Tobacco Road: she was the tour guide who would give them a nice, safe viewing of an inferior culture, rather like the way the aristocracy visited lunatic asylums in the 18th century.

Now Ms. Chute has slipped her traces. The tour guide has joined the toothless outsiders and set fire to the bus. Her hero may be a killer who deserves his fate, but he has manners, grace, authenticity and character. The liberal matron and her consciousness-raised daughter fall into his bed because he has qualities they haven't seen before, certainly not in the worthless men of what passes for an elite in this country these days. And that is what causes the revolt of the book reviewers. Yes many of her characters are empty vessels, plastic men with plastic women. But that is entirely Ms. Chute's point.

3 out of 5 stars Francis Macomber: Americans beware.......1999-10-22

With the encouraging success of the recent box-office smash, American Beauty, I believe props need to be given to whom their due: Ernest Hemingway. No, he was not involved in the actual movie, but I could not help but notice the similarities between the movie and the "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber," which also happens to be my favorite Hemingway short. Americans feel alone and without control of their own lives in the late 20th century, and as Hemingway proves in this strong story, Americans have been feeling this way for a long time. Short and to the point, "Macomber" delivers a one-two punch that cannot be forgotten. Get up and take control of your own life; just make sure you're aware of what you're entering the bush in chase of.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful, one of the best books I have ever read........1999-02-19

I loved the book and the movie. It just reminded me of Key West, which I love, and it gave me a comforting and happy feeling all the way through. It is incredible the way the old man never gives up with his courage to fight the big fish. The ending was perfect when he finds security in his hut and with the little boy. He sure deserved it.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Romance.......2002-10-05

If you like what we call the sweet romances (no sex, no violence), you'll enjoy these four novellas that make up the book Carolina. Lehman's vivid description of the southeast, especially the mountains, enables readers to be there. No travelogue information that feels as if the words came off a brochure, Lehman infuses just enough detail to make readers sense how it feels to wade in clear mountain streams or trek along the paths of the Blue Ridge Mountains. But above all, of course, these are four distinct and cleverly plotted romances.

4 out of 5 stars FOUR TEMPTATIONS.......2001-03-21

CAROLINA is a collection of four Christian Romance novelettes. In each story a gutsy young, unmarried woman faces a crisis too big for herself alone. God she can count on. Less reliable are various romantically available males, female friends or rivals and sometimes overly detached family members. By the end of each of these notably well plotted morality tales, a bad situation and problems are largely resolved through a new supportive social constellation.

-- Backdrop of the four short novels is Asheville, North Carolina and environs with their mountains, storms and vistas of the Southern Appalachians.

--MOUNTAIN MAN unfolds a family feud about property and deception that began with the ecological tragedy of the American chestnut tree blight. --SMOKY MOUNTAIN SUNRISE tells how Rae pretends a romance which leads her to work one summer in a camp for boys. --In CALL OF THE MOUNTAIN, Beth pledges to become a single mother. For if she does not agree in advance to adopt, then her wayward sister's unborn child will be aborted.

--WHITER THAN SNOW tells what happens high on a mountain when severely injured Jennifer is trapped alone during the blizzard of the century. Her only hope for surviving lies with Rick, the guilt driven volunteer fireman whose reckless driving had caused her injuries.

--CAROLINA is four short novels about lusty men and women whose flesh wars daily with their spirits. Every tale supplies material that could be adapted for a television mini-series, feature film or opera in the spirit of WEST SIDE STORY or AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS.

    5 out of 5 stars What a performance!.......2007-02-18

This book pulled me into its portrait of pain, regret and loneliness -- painted in palpable and heart-splitting strokes. To say it's hypnotic and melodious seems scant praise for such a powerful work. I didn't simply read this book. I lived it and felt it; lived Cap's unraveling and felt immobilized as well. The raw emotion hits like a runaway 18-wheeler, knocking the reader into a dimension of anguish that surrounds like moassess, thick and heavy and jading ... and yet I look forward to reading it again, to savor the music and the emotion of this book, a hymn of worship to life and loss.

5 out of 5 stars A hypnotic journey into the core of life's melodies........2003-07-10

Mary Ann Taylor-Hall lives down the road from my aunt's farm in Kentucky. I have never met her, but I feel like I know her already. This novel, her first, is one of the best works of literature that I have ever read. Ever since I received my first copy of the book, one autographed to my grandmother, I have never let it slip out of my mind.

The reader cannot help but journey into the very core of Carrie. When she holds her fiddle, it is as if the wooden masterpiece is also extending from your hands. The drones omitted from the pages go directly to the reader's ears, never ceasing to convey the sorrow and utter hopelessness that she feels.

This book is amazing, and I recommend it to anyone who has a heart beating inside of their chest. You will read it and beg for more -- at least I did.

4 out of 5 stars One of the rare stories that stays with you..........1999-05-01

My women's book group read this over year ago, this story about a woman very unlike any of us, and yet we still refer to it in many discussions. Why? Because Carrie is, after all, very much like us in her motherhood and in her loss that most of us can only talk about if we preface it with "God forbid it should happen to any of us". The absolute sincerity of both her passions and her numbness are irresistible and her ultimate incremental steps toward recovery feel like a triumph for the reader as well.

4 out of 5 stars Bluegrass music and the loss of a child.......1998-11-16

Come and Go, Molly Snow, by Mary Ann Taylor-Hall, is a novel about bluegrass music, the loss of a child, and the question of whether the "circle will be unbroken, by and by, [is there] a better home awaiting, in the sky, Lord, in the sky?" Carrie is a gifted bluegrass fiddler and single mother. She has everything going for her, fiddle player in an outstanding band, Hawktown Road with the handsome Cap, when she daydreams for a moment and her five-year-old daughter, Molly, rides her tricycle into traffic and is killed. As Carrie reminisces: "The woman stood at the clothesline, dreaming, as the child wheeled her trike into the street. Nothing will change that." While a sad subject, this book is far from maudlin; Taylor-Hall fills both the characters and the music they love with light and life. Much of the book is Carrie's coming to peace with herself, that bad things happen, and that her daughter's tragic death is not her fault. She also must come to grips with the question posed by the old-timey song of whether, with Molly and with her, the circle will be unbroken. Carrie is a strong and sympathetic character, and the choices and actions she takes to regain measure in her own life are truly gratifying.

5 out of 5 stars I'm enchanted by the poetry of her words and music passion.......1998-06-20

This book is so hypnotic that, for the first time in my life, I missed my subway stop on my way home while reading it!

I would love to know what part of this book is true, if any. She writes it so realistically that it reads like a heart-breaking autobiography.

    5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2006-05-05

This is the best children's book I have ever read. The book is easy to read and filled with love and rescues. Stan, the main character, has quit his job at the bakery to become a hotdog man. Stan meets a family who can't afford 4 hotdogs and shows love and commpassion. He also gets stuck in a snowstorm and gets rescued by the patrol. I think this is a great book for young readers. I reccommend this book to all ages.

    5 out of 5 stars A very sweet story.......2005-01-12

This is a sweet story about an older man and his wife. After retiring, he decides to keep on working, as a hotdog man. This may sound a bit odd for a child's story, but it is actually is great! It becomes quite adventurous in one part, when a snow storm comes, and Stan is able to help out some people who are stranded and snowed in. This book has small glimpses into traits that I would love my children to learn...Generosity, thoughtfullness, ingenuity, courage, friendliness, and a strong work ethic, among others. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Light, Clever Book.......2003-11-15

My 7-yr old and I read this together. He read most of it aloud and loved it. He asked me to "ask him questions" about the book as practice for his schools' "Reading Counts" test.
Being from the south, he was a little unsure about the snowplow, but he understood the other concepts clearly. This is a cute story, enjoyed very much by a 7 yr-old and his Dad.

    5 out of 5 stars good book.......2002-05-27

This is a level 2 easy reader about a man who retires and becomes a hot dog man. A very cute story about a man and his wife. My 7 year old enjoyed reading this book.

    4 out of 5 stars A different perspective.......2002-02-19

This is my 7 year old son's favorite book at the moment, which surprises me, because it's about a man who retires and fulfills his dream to become a hot dog man!

Not something every 7 year old can relate to, but it's a well told, interesting little story.

We see Stan's hopes that his new business will succeed. We watch as he shows compassion for a poor family, and when a snowstorm threatens school children, we see just how wonderful Stan really is.

He's a very likeable character, and spending the day with Stan is like spending the day with Grandpa.

Lovely story and easy for beginning readers.

Her first book since Memnoch the Devil, Anne Rice takes us now into the world of Isaiah and Jeremiah, and the destruction of Solomon's temple, to tell the story of Azriel, Servant of the Bones. He is ghost, genji, demon, angel--pure spirit made visible. He pours his heart out to us as he journeys from an ancient Babylon of royal plottings and religious upheavals to the Europe of the Black Death and to the modern world. There he finds himself, amidst the towers of Manhattan, in confrontation with his own human origins and the dark forces that have sought to condemn him to a life of evil and destruction.

2 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03

This is a version of the whole genii in the bottle story. Azriel is one of that sort of supernatural entity, and grows more and more cantankerous and nasty over the years, leading him to be imprisoned over the centuries. His name, of course, is supposed to suggest his demonic nature.

He ends up being awakened in modern New York, and becomes involved with a murder, and a history professor that learns his story.

          2 out of 5 stars Tedious, boring.......2007-08-20

This is probably my 2nd least favorite Anne Rice novel. I remember it being uninteresting, the characters, bland, tiresome. I have read every single Anne Rice novel and dislike giving her any negative reviews, but unfortunetely, I found nothing to like about this particular book. Would I recommend it to a fan who has not read it? Truly, no. Though her quality of writing is superb as ever, the book offers no reward upon finishing it.

          5 out of 5 stars Great read!!.......2007-01-12

I own and have read almost all of Anne Rice's books, I am a huge fan. I Have read and re-read this book. This is my favorite book by her. Some people have reviewed poorly, but the details in the book is what makes the book. It makes you feel Azriels' pain as he is turned into a golden god, only to be cursed for all time by a hag. I recommend you read this book for the book itself, not because of Anne Rice's other works. It cannot be compared to her other series of books because it is a different type of book completely. It does have some super-natural enities in it, with powers, but they are on the other end of the scale when compared to the Vampire's. I love this book. If you are un-sure due to the mix of reviews try to borrow it first or buy a used copy. I was very pleased with this book, and it is one I never lend out.

          5 out of 5 stars A great tale........2007-01-01

I enjoyed this book. It probably is my favorite Rice book. Apparently others thought it was very poorly written, but I have to disagree-- it kept my interest from start to finish. Well worth your time to read this book if you like Anne Rice's work you won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Azriel is the star of the show..........2006-07-06

Azriel is a ghost, demon, and angel -- in love with good, in thrall to evil. He pours out his heart to Jonathan, a history professor-cum-writer, telling his astonishing story when he found himself in New York City, a dazed witness to the murder of a young girl, and became inexplicably obsessed by the desire to avenge her.

It turns out that the man behind the murder of the young girl is her own stepfather who would pay any price to fulfill his messaianic dream via his immense worldwide organization, the Temple of the Mind.

Azriel takes us back to his mortal youth, in the city of Babylon, where he was plucked from death by evil priests and sorceress and transformed into a genie commanded to do their bidding. Challenging these forces of destruction, Azriel embarked on his perilous journey through time, from the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, to the Europe of the Black Death, to Manhattan in the 1990s.

As his quest approaches its climatic horror, he risks his supernatural powers to forestall in the nick of time, an attempt to destroy the world and redeems, at last, what was denied him so long ago: his own eternal human soul.
