Forget what you may read about the glittering social scene of the Hamptons; in The Hamptons, photographed and described by Susan Meisel and Ellen Harris, we're shown a lush, summery world meant for utter peace and relaxation. From the manicured lawns enclosed by privet hedges to the wide, sandy beaches and gentle surf, the Long Island landscapes shown here are both elegant and wild, extremely modern and utterly traditional.
Focusing on three towns (Sagaponack, Bridgehampton, and Easthampton), the photographs have been divided into chapters based on their content, rather than the area in which they were taken. The variety of architecture is showcased in the "There's No Place Like Home" chapter--it's not every town that encompasses the early Federal and saltbox styles of this country right along with sleek modern styles that have open decks and windows as their focus. A surprisingly practical side of the Hamptons is disclosed in "Field of Dreams," where photos of corn, potatoes, and wheat threshing reveal the down-home roots of this farming community. "For the Love of Blue" provides the perfect pictures to help beachcombers survive gray winter days; the close-up shots of crashing waves and the panoramic views of rocky beaches may well transport you via memory to your own favorite beach.
Each chapter has a page of written introduction, but throughout the book the text is minimal, serving only to provide brief descriptions of the glorious photos. This is exactly as it should be; the photos provide such a feast for the eyes, any additional information would merely detract from their loveliness. --Jill Lightner
Book Description
The Hamptons-that glorious stretch of beaches and farmlands along the South Fork of Long Island, New York, from Southampton to Montauk and the many villages in between-is one of the most talked-about and popular resort areas in the country. There, the celebrated, the artistic, the literary, and everyday people commingle all year long. This stunning photo essay offers an insider's view, in text and 200 color pictures, of the private homes, spectacular gardens, and other scenic wonders of the area.
An arresting mix of architectural and interior decorating styles, magnificent plantings and sculpture gardens, and great private art collections-not to mention the incredible sky and ocean-contribute to the enchantment of this popular resort area, drawing Donna Karan, Martha Stewart, Steven Spielberg, and Chuck Close, to name but a few. This book will be irresistible for the thousands who flock to the Hamptons each summer, and for all who like to peek at life behind the hedges in the real Hamptons.
SUSAN MEISEL is a well-known painter and, with her husband, art dealer (and Abrams author) Louis Meisel, a collector of Americana. The Meisels own a home in the Hamptons, in Sagaponack, noted for its extraordinary garden and collectibles.
ELLEN HARRIS and her husband are collectors of Americana, quilts, and tramp art. They also own a home in Sagaponack.
200 photographs in full color, 10 x 91/2"

Can't Wait For Summer!.......2001-05-01
I love this book! Reading it over this past winter brought back all the great feelings of being in the Hamptons. I love the fact that the beautiful photographs don't focus on just the ocean, but show hamptons life behind the scenes. The photographs of the gardens and artist's studios are especially nice. This is a great collectable book and I highly recommend it as a gift.
Just like being there... even better.......2001-04-28
We live in the city - downtown. We have three children and wish/dream about getting out of town on a weekend and letting the children run and play on the grass in the country or sand on a beach. This book puts you there and without any of the sense of overwhelming and intimidating wealth that would take away from the beauty and feeling the Hamptons can offer. The photos are beautiful and the subjects are different and interesting. I truly do love this book and have given many as gifts to friends from out of town who have heard so much about the east end of the Island but have yet to visit.
Fantasy Book or not ??.......2001-02-15
This book is very nice, but fo not buy it when you are looking for a book which takes a look inside these beautiful houses. It only shows the outside and ,i think, too many pictures of the gardens. It is really a nice book but i thought there would be many pictures of the houses and not so many detailed pictures of gardens...
A good addition to our second home stack.......2000-11-15
My husband and I are beginning to collect books related to second homes as we dream about and plan our own great escape. Our favorites are Better Homes and Gardens SECOND HOME, FAMILY HOUSES BY THE SEA, CABIN FEVER, and Better Homes and Gardens COTTAGE STYLE. This book on the Hamptons is our newest purchase, and it has great photos. The best book in terms of combining the dreamy photos with helpful insights to guide our own second home planning, though, is SECOND HOME.
EVERY COFFEE TABLE SHOULD HAVE ONE - FOR ALL TO SEE !!!.......2000-09-03
From tag sales to spectacular homes. The photography is true to life. The scenery of flora, ocean landscapes, sunsets and to the history of a town that is small yet so BIG. A delight to see behind the hedges of wonderful homes, decor and art.

behind the hedges of montecido.......2000-10-17
Having recently stayed with a freind who has bought one of the homes "Behind the Hedges of Montecido" I became very curious about this beautiful California town. When i ordered this book it was primarily to get to see some of the other homes that were hidden from view behind lovely landscaping and walls. This is not the book for that, i discovered. This book has few pictures (all black and white and small), but it does cover some historical antecdotes about 4 or 5 estates, and i found these to be interesting. "Behind the Hedges of Montecido" is not what a would call a "page turner", but it was definately worth reading for a glimpse into the early days of Montecido.
Book Description
Tom Whitman, behind the wheel on Route 66 heading east with Allison at his side and their cat Caesar curled up on the backseat, would soon find himself immersed in a maelstrom of unimagined dimension. Newly appointed headmaster of Florence Bruce Seminary, Tom was heading toward an unexpected clash of styles and of cultural expectations. His ingrained instincts for sound management were about to challenge the charismatic, lackadaisical leadership style left behind by the former headmaster. In some respects, the differences would be as great as the clash between Indian and white had been three hundred and fifty years earlier. Violence perpetrated on the school and the community by both bystander and combatant would be traumatic. Rules, laws, agreements, accepted tenets of human behavior, simple decency, contracts

A helpful tool for board members.......2006-09-06
I've had the pleasure of serving on non-profit boards whose members are dedicated to the mission of the organization. I've also seen and been dismayed by the actions of board members with personal agendas who can bring about undesirable consequences for institutions and their leaders. It doesn't matter if it's a private school, a battered women's shelter, or a cancer society - no organization is immune from the ability of a board member, with self interests, to derail the process of moving it toward its desired goal. Dr. Cummings has provided a valuable tool for anyone who wants to be a good board member, or an effective leader - and to help recognize the ones who aren't. And since it's written as a novel it's a lot more interesting than the "How To Be A Good Board Member" drivel that's handed out and most of us don't read anyway!
An interesting and educational read..........2006-08-23
I have had the privilege of working with a non-profit organization in the past and I am considering pursuing future work with other non-profits. This book, while clearly a very personal account of one leader's experience in education, is a valuable resource to anyone who is involved in an organization that is governed by the dynamic and challenging efforts of an executive committee. When a common goal is that of education, helping the environment, or building a strong community, the thoughtful ideas and dedication of a group of individuals must be translated in the most efficient and productive manner possible. This is a story by which one can learn priceless lessons in any aspect of the organization so that the ultimate goals can be attained. I recommend this book to anyone who desires insight into how an organization can actually hurt itself when individual interests are not kept in check and how, perhaps, to learn from the mistakes of the past.
About my school.........2006-05-23
So I'm a graduating senior at college at the moment, but I was a student at the school this book was written about when Dr. Cummings was headmaster (for just one short year)... and while the book is decent and well-written, I'd have to say it does reflect a lot of his bitterness about being asked to leave, and it ignores some of the fairly serious mistakes he made as a new leader of an established institution. Of course everyone is the star of their own novel, but in defence of my high school, this guy was far from the moral hero himself.
Fascinating!.......2006-04-07
As a retired school teacher, this book was a real page turner for me. Having taught in both private and public schools, I have seen enough of the truly rewarding aspect of teaching, as well as the politics and personality conflicts that can be involved, to really appreciate the traumatizing situation explored here. Every school teacher and, especially, every school administrator would gain from reading this book.
Good read!.......2005-05-15
This is a fascinating story of institutional dysfunction. The tale of good-intentioned people whose missteps lead inexorably toward the tragic ending keeps you turning the pages. Any administrator or board member of an educational establishment - private or public - or of any non-profit organization should read this book to avoid the pitfalls that can so easily entrap . . . easy to see only in hindsight! As a practicing attorney and professor of school and employment law, I have presented this book to several of my clients!

Studies the critical role homeland politics plays in Vietnamese immigrants' assimilation into the host society
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant study.......2004-02-28
The author proposes to study the Vietnamese expatriates living in Paris, France and arriving in that country between 1954 and 2000. The majority came to France after 1975. Although they formed a minority group, they did not actively get involved into French politics.
They had their own politics, which they brought with them from Vietnam. Two groups dominated the landscape: the communist pro-Hanoi group and the anticommunist group. The particularities of these two groups were analyzed and studied lengthily as the author, a Frenchwoman, has been able to "infiltrate" into these groups.
This is an important study that reveals how fractionated the Vietnamese living in Paris are and how politics in the native country still profoundly affects these people. One could say that the Vietnam war goes on in Paris.

Book Description
Yearning for a warm and loving marriage, Yvette works hard as a housewife and on their Iowa dairy farm to satisfy her husband, Luke, and tries to motivate him to be a loving and caring husband and father. But hidden behind his charming public facade, Luke is critical and demands more submission. With the help of her friend, Delores, Yvette grapples with the meaning and application of Biblical submission to her husband, changes how she relates to her husband, and endeavors to correct the misbeliefs of their teenaged sons, Greg and Kyle. Luke indoctrinates his wife and children on the meaning of submission and obedience. But one day he goes too far. Will their marriage survive the storm? Will Luke become the warm and loving husband Yvette craves? Will their daughter, Tanya, learn to trust her father? And will their sons become loving and respectful young men? Waneta Dawn grew up on a dairy farm in Kalona, Iowa, and was raised in the Mennonite faith. She currently lives with her daughter and next door to her mother in Iowa. She has researched domestic violence, particularly dominance through verbal, emotional, psychological, and spiritual abuse for over ten years. For two of those years she used curriculum from Duluth, Minnesota to facilitate the Batterer's Education Program, a men's group, which met one evening a week and operated through the Iowa Department of Corrections. Ms Dawn hopes Behind the Hedge will help heal and strengthen relationships to the glory of God.

a must read .......2006-06-19
wow, Im not realy finished with it yet but man it is a page turner. I cant put it down its a must read a realy realy good book about how the christian society in the future has been potraid as bad people but it all goes well. i just have to say you have to read it. its just that good.
Shades of Futures To Come.......2002-06-06
Jeff Ovall's "Chronicles of the HEdge" is a gripping story of the possible destiny of mankind if he continues to pursue the present course of philosophy and world view. However, there is a shade of truth through this whole novel that each man and woman must answer for themselves here in the real world. The book reads much like the LEFT BEHIND series and has a few unsuspected twists as the book reaches it breathtaking climax.
The Persecuted Church -- all too real.......2002-03-09
Jeff's view of Christianity's role in a "tolerant" society can easily be envisioned in this day and age. Many of the scenes in the book can be found in countries around the world -- the Bible banned, Christians persecuted for sharing their faith. It is a chilling but compelling story of globalized persecution.
Couldn't put it down!.......2002-01-02
Fascinating story! The futuristic plot line is top notch. It is especially intriguing considering the recent tragic events in New York City and the Pentagon. The seeds of terror that haunt the persecuted church today, and were all too evident on 9/11, were precursors to the horror exemplified in Jeff Ovall's "CHRONICLES." A novel that will send chills through you as you sleuth through underground NYC subway tunnels and visit futuristic juvenile detention centers. It's a gripping novel that you will recommend to friends and family.
Great Stuff.......2001-09-19
An excellent look at the persecuted Church in our not too distant future! Ovall captures the readers interest and keeps it throughout the Chronicles. Great character development and riveting action. I recommend this book to anyone. You won't be disappointed.

Book Description
Detailed photographs and illustrations, a simple to follow style and sixteen years of experience teaching thousands of people how to tan, allow Matt Richards to show you exactly what you need to know to successfully turn your deer elk, moose or buffalo skins into the leather preferred by outdoorsmen and native peoples for millennia. You'll learn the traditional methods of brain tanning as well as how to use a dozen eggs or soap and oil instead. This revised and updated edition includes substantial improvements to the process that make it even easier for you to produce soft and durable buckskin.
What's New
A new 15 minute step that creates:
Easier to soften hides
Hides that come out super soft
Hides that take the dressing even when dry, which in turn:
Removes the variability of trying to get the perfect moisture content before dressing
Makes it much easier to get complete brain penetration on thick hides, which makes tanning thicker hides such as moose, elk or even thick deer, way less work.
Makes it so you can skip one of the wringing steps (which takes 15 minutes itself).
Other key new highlights include:
Different skinning cuts for a better hide shape.
How to tan Moose, Elk & Antelope
Bibliography (thorough and user-friendly)
Important improvements to the Bucking process.
Important improvements to the Dressing step to ensure success for first timers.
A step-by-step guide to varying this books' Basic Method if you want to try the `pre-smoking' method, or if you want to tan without the bucking step.
Buckskin is durable, soft, washable and warm. A hand-made garment for people all over the word for millennia, it breathes and stretches with your body, cuts the wind and won't tear on briars. It is excellent to wear hiking, hunting or around the house. Plus you don't need to hunt. Deer skins that would otherwise go to waste are available every fall from neighbors, locals and butcher shops.
Customer Reviews:
worth every penny.......2007-05-13
Deerskins into buckskins is a wonderful resource. Matt Richards completely breaks down the science of tanning into an understandable form that even newby tanners can utilize. This book only covers the wet scrape process, but he provides insight as well as alternative methods. I would definately recommend this book to anyone interested in making their own buckskin as a hobby or small scale company. Matt also keeps it fun, this is not a dry list of things to remember.
Deerskins Into Buckskins: How To Tan With Natural Materials, a Field Guide for Hunters and Gatherers.......2007-03-09
I had been brain tanning for many years when I first read this book. After trying some of Matt's ideas, my hides came out softer the first time and had very few hides that needed re-softening.
Matt's book is simply written, his ideas and techniques are solid, and if you follow his instruction, you WILL make great leather. I once met a young lady that showed me her first four hides she ever brain tanned. They were great, and she learned how to do it from this book. In fact, I use his book in the brain tanning classes I teach. It is that good.
the best available resource for anyone interested in the craft.......2007-01-25
Without much success, I stumbled around for a while trying to figure out how to brain tan deer hides. Then I came across Matt's book, Deerskins into Buckskins. Simply put, there is no better resource available for anyone interested in learning how to tan. The reader is carried step by step through the process in a way that makes it easy to understand. Each and every step is thoroughly explained in language that is easy to follow. Beyond the basic process, there are sections that cover variations to the standard tanning method, making stuff with your finished hide, the history of tanning, trouble shooting, and more. I picked up the book dubious that I cold learn a seemingly difficult process from a book alone. I was pleasantly surprised. I highly recommend Deerskins into Buckskins for anyone interested in tanning. There is also an instructional DVD companion. Between the two, it would be impossible for anyone not to become a successful tanner.
Deer skins into Buckskins- A great book!.......2007-01-16
I have read all the previous reviews on this book and was personally refered to this book by a person skilled in brain tanning. He said it was the best out there and I agree. Matt starts out with some history of tanning, and a good overall understanding into the chemistry behind tanning. With a better understanding of what happens to the skin, one can better understand the whole process. I did my first skin as the book directed, from the tools, soaking, working the hide and smoking. The book is well written and easy to understand and follow. Good illustrations but some of the pictures could be in better focus. The book has some instructions on how to cut, sew, and use your tans for clothing, etc.
This is a great book and very interesting to read. Just buy the book and you will know why I gave Matt and his book 5 stars.
Deerskins Into Buckskins: How To Tan with Natural Materials.......2005-08-09
This is the most in depth and comprehensive book on the subject of brain tanning that I have purchased. The Author does not hide any of his secrets. I have already done a couple of smaller skins and am satisfied that the methods that Matt Richards teaches are what I was looking for. I am now ready to move on to a deer hide, and I have also purchased two fresh buffalo hides, one to rawhide, and the other for a braintan robe. My freezer is filling up fast. Thank you Matt Richards for putting your knowledge into print.

Haunting Dark Fairytale of Overcoming One's Past.......2007-09-03
I've read most of the reviews here for Deerskin and want to preface mine with a bit of a disclaimer. One of the other reviewers, a reviewer whose opinion I respect highly (as I've seen her comments on other fantasy works, and she's always been spot on) said that Deerskin was a politicized recovery polemic and should be in the self help rather than the fantasy section. I'm inclined to disagree, but I also want to make clear that my opinion may be somewhat biased, as I have been through some personal struggles in my own life that make objective distance from this story difficult for me. I will say that as a "self-help" book, I found this book more helpful than years of therapy, as McKinley puts an all too common story in an easily understood fairytale context and strips away a lot of the modern pre-conceptions of Lissar's experience, leaving a mostly pure, universal narrative. McKinley deals with the aftermath of years of emotional neglect, the king's horrific crime against his daughter, and Lissar's ultimate recovery in a realistic way that I've rarely seen in other books; granted, there are a few kinks to the story, which I'm getting to in the next paragraph. However, overall, the impact of Lissar's story is incredibly powerful to me. I want to make clear that to me, this is not politicized story; personal pain should never be politicized. Politicized victimhood cheapens people's true suffering and dis-enables them from achieving recovery and wholeness. I would not recommend this story if I felt that McKinley was making some kind of political statement with Lissar's pain.
There are a few things about the story that made me give it four stars instead of five. First of all, the pacing--it can be rather slow in spots. Also, there are a few plot elements that I'm still confused about and I think could have been presented more clearly. My main quibble is with the characters of Lissar's parents, particularly the king. I have a clear picture of everyone else in the story, but the king never comes alive for me. He committs a terrible crime against his daughter, and I think this would be even scarier if he were a more realistic character. People who committ these kind of crimes against their families are real people, and that makes their betrayal far more devastating and confusing for the victims. Instead, the king is so arrogant and cold and evil that I have a difficult time grasping Lissar's or any of the characters' actual relationship to him. I think if he were a more realistic character, it would fix a lot of the problems with the final confrontation scene.
All that said, I highly recommend this book. I enjoyed Lissar's development as a character and her non-stereotypical romance with Ossin. Also, being a dog lover, I loved the character of Ash and how important a part she plays in Lissar's recovery.
An entrancing dream .......2007-05-17
This novel is like a dream: things happen that don't always make sense, it starts very simplistic and turns horrific very quickly, and you find yourself unable to wake up or turn away because you have to know how it ends. I was originally a little put off by the incest and rape aspect of this book (two things I don't like to read about-- who does?) but McKinley is a master and handles this very well. The actual assault scenes are dream-like and not told in painful, exacting detail (thankfully) which make this novel all the more compelling. Lissar is in a sort of dream as well: her dreamy, isolated childhood, her nightmare after being betrayed by her father, and then she finally wakes up. This novel is so powerful and incredible that I suggest it to anyone and everyone. McKinley is one of my favorite writers and this is one of my favorite books from her.
Lissar is not a shrinking violet character, nor is she brash or outwardly strong: she is forgotten about most of her life and lives quietly with her dog. She grows to find strength she never knew she had and becomes an incredible character that I wish I heard more of. The scenes of dog raising add to the humanity of this book. I can't reccomend it enough!
A beautiful adult fairy tale.......2007-02-18
I absolutely love this book. Its one of my favorites and I've reread it several times. Deerskin is such a heartbreakingly tragic character that at times I was moved to tears by her pain. McKinley handles the topic of incest and rape in an appropriate manner that isn't too graphic, but nonetheless conveys the point. The romance that develops between Deerskin and prince Ossin is poignant and heartwarming. When Deerskin reveals her true identity and what happened to her, Ossin isn't disgusted. In fact he's outraged and appalled on her behalf. He wants nothing but her love and to love her in turn. My only problem with this book was the ending. It seemed vaguely unfinished to me. I wish Ms. McKinley had provided an epilogue or something that told us what happened to Deerskin and Ossin. Did they marry? Did Lissla Lissar manage to accept and overcome what happened to her and thereby accept Ossin's love? At the end of the story she does stay with Ossin but she stills seems a bit flighty and I can't help but wonder if she doesn't panic and leave him again. But in spite of that minor flaw this book is an incredible story that I highly recommend to anyone. The plot is original as well as heartbreaking in its sadness and joy.
A hauntingly told story that is the best I have read in a long time!.......2006-11-20
I have to say, this story is the first Robin McKinley that I have ever read and though I picked it up hesitantly, I couldn't put it down! The story is fiercely poetic in it's language of heartbreaking beauty and so can tell a story of unimaginable pain. You cannot help but weep for the wonder of the pain that it weaves, and yet the story has it's moments of humor and happiness that just make you want to laugh.
If all of his books are such, I feel I must read them all!
Five stars, if I could give more, I would!!!!
Deerskin by Robin Mckinley.......2006-07-22
I thought the book Deerskin was good very well written and not the typical book you normally read. It was very different but a good different but then I am partial to Robin Mckinley books. It had a good story line and though confusing in parts very good i loved it!
Book Description
Deerskins and Duffels documents the trading relationship between the Creek Indians in what is now the southeastern United States and the Anglo-American peoples who settled there. The Creeks were the largest native group in the Southeast, and through their trade alliance with the British colonies they became the dominant native power in the area.
The deerskin trade became the economic lifeblood of the Creeks after European contact. This book is the first to examine extensively the Creek side of the trade, especially the impact of commercial hunting on all aspects of Indian society. British trade is detailed here, as well: the major traders and trading companies, how goods were taken to the Indians, how the traders lived, and how trade was used as a diplomatic tool. The author also discusses trade in Indian slaves, a Creek-Anglo cooperation that resulted in the virtual destruction of the native peoples of Florida.
Customer Reviews:
A scholarly and easily readable study of a complex subject........1997-08-05
In "Deerskins and Duffels", Kathryn Holland Braund provides a scholarly and easily readable study of the dynamics of the trade relationship between the English and the Creek Indian Nation.
Braund delivers a good overview of the history of the Anglo-Creek trade; from its introduction in the late 17th century, its triumph against its competitors - France and Spain - in the 18th century, and its conclusion in the early 19th century with the removal of the Creeks by the American government.
Importantly, the book shows how that both the British and the Creeks benefitted from their trade relationship. South Carolina and Georgia owe their colony's success to the economic windfall from the trade. Meanwhile, the trade enabled the Creeks to become the preeminent Indian nation of the Southeast at the, sometimes catastrophic, cost of neighboring tribes.
"Deerskins and Duffels" gives an interesting look into the life and business activities of the frontier Indian trader. However, the book's greatest value is its well-researched examination of the Creeks as consumers and how their Nation's demand for goods caused them to create a massive commercial deer harvesting enterprise.
Braund has written a fully documented textbook on the subject of Anglo-Creek trade; but, she has relayed the information in such a way that both the scholar and the casual reader will be well satisfied for having read it.
