Book Description
This comprehensive and balanced look at literacy practice has long been one of the most popular reading methods books available. It begins by introducing seven principles for comprehensive reading instruction, and then explains the theoretical foundations of teaching reading. Part I builds on those foundations with specific methods in Part II, and then in Part III it describes how to create a variety of learning centers, and how to plan developmentally appropriate reading curriculum for students in both K-3 and 4-8 classrooms. Chapters 12 and 13 provide a continuum of knowledge by describing classroom organization and curriculum for grades 4-6 and 6-8.. For teachers and future elementary school teachers of reading.

The process of comprehending text.......2004-11-15
Reutzel and Cooter, Jr. discusses the process of comprehending text in four stages. It is based on the schema theory. The first stage is searching. By this, they mean that in the very beginning, the reader is trying to search for the meaning of the text by looking and searching at the given text or print. By searching the text, the reader is using their schemata to help them understand what the text is trying to tell them. The second stage is applying. Applying is when the reader uses what they already know from the first stage, searching, to understand the text. The third stage is selecting and evaluating. In this stage, the reader looks at the information they already know and starts to evaluate the information by either retaining or discarding the information. It is in this step, that the reader is trying to decide which information is important for him/her to remember. The last stage is composing. The reader is making up a new meaning for the text that he/she just read by using what he already knows from all the previous stages. The new meaning is a replica of what he/she just read, but in their own words. These four stages, as Reutzel and Cooter, Jr. illustrate it, is a cyclical process. By this they mean that it is a circular process, where the student needs to be continually Applying, Searching, Selecting and Evaluating and then Composing.
Reutzel and Cooter, Jr. also discusses the four major difficulties a student may have in comprehension. The first difficulty a student may have is not having the prior knowledge or schema about the given text. Because of the lack of prior knowledge, the student will not be able to understand what the text is trying to convey. Thus, not being able to comprehend the text. The next difficulty a student may encounter is having the prior knowledge and schema about the text, but the author does not give enough information or clues for the student to establish or decide on a given schema that he/she already has. Third, the student may have selected a schema ahead of time only to find out that it doesn't make sense as they read the text. And lastly, the student's cultural experiences greatly affect how he/she chooses a schema to understand the text. This may lead to "an understanding of the text but a misunderstanding of the author"
Teaching Children To Read: From Basals to Books.......2002-03-19
I found this book very useful in helping me pass the Excelsior / Regents College Exam. Also useful was Literacy by Cooper. Both are available along with Regents groups of reading forsale under jring 47 - used for 49. I am selling all three together. I studied these three books and did very well on the test - just last month.

Book Description
This provocative, and sure to be controversial, novella takes the reader on a field trip inside the mind of a Mississippi Delta good-old-boy ex-deputy sherriff who is as vicious and racist as the worst 1950's-1960's stereotypes. Junior Ray Loveblood tells the story in his own profane, colloquial voice, telling why he hates just about everybody, and why he wants to shoot Leland Shaw, a shell-shocked World War II hero and poet who is hiding in a silo from what he believes are German patrols. The reader gets to sort out whose reality is more fantastic, Shaw's or Loveblood's, as the one stalks the other through the pages of this highly original and darkly comedic story.

TUNICA MS AND THE GOOD OLE BOYS.......2006-01-30
THIS BOOK IS A TRUTHFUL BOOK WITH ALL THE NAMES CHANGED . MOST OF THESE PEOPLE I KNOW OR KNEW . IT GIVES A VIEW OF THE PLACE I GREW UP. BUT I NEVER RELIZED HOW BAD THE PLACE REALLY WAS . UNTIL THIS DAY I DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO THE SUBMORINE .I HEARD MY PARENTS TALK ABOUT IT . THE AUTHOR COULD HAVE USED A FEW LESS NASTY WORDS . BUT IF HE WAS WRITING LIKE POEPLE TALK IN THAT TOWN THEN HE HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD. A LOT OF PEOPLE DON'T LIKE THE BOOK BECAUSE IT IS GRAPHIC BUT THAT IS JUST THE WAY IT WAS AND STILL IS ONLY IT IS IN REVERSE NOW.
Junior Ray, an Instant Classic .......2005-05-16
I grew up in the South, and although Junior Ray is somewhat older, I understood his millieu. I had friends who were as bloodthirsty, and relatives who were as racist, but I knew no one who was as philosophically sophisticated as Pritchard's protagonist. JR is a latter day Falstaff, Caliban, Aaron the Moor, and Don Quixote combined into one marvellous character. Don't be misled by the setting: Pritchard's planters, bankers, "niggas," and "white trash" are all around us still, and if we look deeply enough, JR is us. Let's hope that Pritchard will delight us again in the near future. In the meantime, Junior Ray will remain a cult classic -- unless of course, the NYTimes has the courage to review it.
PS: Junior Ray includes by far the most amusing human copulation scene ever to appear in literature.
One helluva good book.......2005-04-21
Pritchard has succeeded in creating a character on the par with Holden Caulfield or Ignatius Reilly: you don't like them at all really, but you can't stop reading to see what they'll do next. At a time when the modern South constantly tries to show that it has left behind its old ways, Junior Ray Loveblood doesn't give a crap whether you approve of his way of looking at things. This book is funny, aggravating, intriguing social commentary from a man whose time has gone.
Southern Fried Satire.......2005-04-12
It would be easy to characterize Junior Ray Loveblood as some sort of redneck avatar. He IS, after all, a self-proclaimed racist; he's unreflective, vulgar, and casually violent. His personal philosophy is based on angry class consciousness; he knows his place in the caste system of the South: redneck/white trash. Junior Ray is an enthusiastically diversified bigot who hates lots of things: bankers, planters, women, blacks, foreigners, preachers, politicians, etc. And he's not shy about saying so. "...what I was really up against was all them versus me."
But that's not all there is to Junior Ray. In spite of the crudity, in spite of the trash talking persona, Junior Ray is a nuanced character (though I'm sure he'd whup my ass for saying so). He's a strange hybrid--what you might get if you crossed a wounded Cape Buffalo with Pap Finn and Samuel Pepys.
Junior Ray is Juvenalian satire, Southern Fried. This book is scathingly and sctologically funny ("I guess if I could say one thing about screwin' sheep, it really made me appreciate family values."). Above all, Junior Ray is honest. And he's not even a very good racist--having a sneaking fondness for "niggas" who he says have a kind of humanity that bankers and planters don't have, and with whom he seems to be more comfortable.
The South he grew up in has been totally changed by civil rights, women's rights, political correctness, and urbanization--the loss of farms and woods and more importantly, human scale. None of this suits Junior Ray. He's not exactly a good ol' boy--he's the antithesis of goodness, and he's honest about that too--but he's a true rendering of a type. A lineal descendant of the Snopes. You might not like Junior Ray, but you will remember his voice, and you will probably laugh at his story. John Pritchard has created a character who "casts a shadow" to use Faulkner's terminology.
Ms. Atlanta Birmingham Jackson is tip of the iceberg........2005-04-08
From the adventures of "Mr. Floppy" and "Miz Squint," to all my other favorite parts, each time I re-read them, I laugh out loud louder!
Hooray for Junior Ray!

emotion rollercoaster.......2006-11-30
This book was way more than I thought it would be. It controls your emotions throughout the story as it takes you through a young lady's journey to accept responsibility. You form opinions about your favorite characters only to have them changed as you delve deeper into the story. This story keeps you going until the end
Horses and Music.......2006-09-04
I purchased this novel while attending the Writing the Rockies conference in Gunnison, Colorado earlier this year. Corrine Brown was one of the instructors and I was very impressed with her.
This book is not what I had expected given the qualifications of the writers. It is not an adult book, but is ideal for teenagers and very young adults. There are excellent lessons about life, adversity and "doing the right thing" imparted in the book.
The characters are underdeveloped and too predictable for this to qualify as literature for the adult reader. However, it was a fun read and was very fast paced at times. The parts about the horses and the ranching were the most interesting for me. The machanics of producing music and the pitfalls of the music industry were also interesting because it was my first exposure to that world. I have little patience with the emotional volatility and mercurial reactions by the characters to events as they unfolded in the story. But, I have the same reaction to that behavior in everyday life.
I look forward to reading Corrine's novel, "MacGregor's Lantern" in the near future. I would recommend this book for kids age fifteen and up.
fascinating character study .......2006-05-06
In Fairfield, New Jersey, Nashville promoters Mike Foxworthy and Mart Heistler think that with some polish singer Amelia "Tawny" Talbott can be their ticket back to the big time. Broke and at the end of her rope Tawny and her manager Terry Ann Hill agree to her being turned into the "Daughter of the American West".
Their old army buddy Jess McLain owes Mike a favor so the former rodeo star and local musician agrees to house Tawny on his J Bar M Ranch in Wyoming though he would prefer to say no. He knows he needs the money if Mike's instincts prove correct and his ranch is to survive. When Tawny arrives, he hears her talent when she sings, but also knows she will fail because she is an alcoholic. Pushing her beyond her limit as if she was a new military recruit she cleans up but shocks him when she encourages him to be all that he can be by going back on the rodeo circuit even as they fall in love.
SANCTUARY RANCH is a fascinating character study starring two individuals who seemingly on the surface have noting in common, but quickly realize they share plenty as each encourages the other to conquer their demons that hold them back. The support cast is solid adding to the feel of modern day life on a Wyoming ranch or the behind the scenes manipulation in the Nashville music world. However, this contemporary is the story of two people meeting with each bringing out the best in the other.

Product Description
The excellent solos in this book are performance-quality improvisations on jazz-blues standards. If you are a rock, folk, country, or blues guitarist looking to advance to the next level, these solos will help you develop more variety in your phrasing, improved familiarity with the fingerboard, a vastly improved ear, and enhanced conceptual abilities.
The solos are for guitarists with intermediate, or better, skills. Each tune is arranged in standard notation and tablature, and recorded note-for-note on the companion CD.
Solos: Alberta; Careless Love; Corrine, Corrina; Every Night When the Sun Goes In; Hesitation Blues; Jada; Lonesome Road; Make Me a Pallet on the Floor; Nobody's Business; St. James Infirmary; Sporting Life Blues; Willie the Weeper.
Product Description
Legendary guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Mike Bloomfield, Hubert Sumlin, T-Bone Walker, Johnnie Winter, Albert King, Freddie King, and Chuck Berry are known to all blues fans for their remarkable soloing abilities.
But the complete blues guitarist must do more than shine in the solo spotlight. And that is why every great soloist is also a great fill-in player.
Tasteful fill-in licks support and inspire the singer while adding fire and drive to the performance. For example, Blind Lemon Jeffersons string-snapping fill-ins provided the perfect complement for his rough-hewn blues songs. Both Louis Armstrong and Lester Young seemed to talk to the singer with their finely-crafted, jazzy fill-ins. And Henry Sunflower Vestines stinging, buzzsaw fill-ins never failed to drive his Canned Heat bandmates into a psychedelic frenzy.
This book is accompanied by a user-friendly split-track CD allows you to sit in with a professional blues band while you learn to play blues fills behind a great singer, Charles Adkins. The Heat-Seeking Missile Blues Band is heard on the left channel; the fill-in licks are isolated on the right channel.
This is not just another book of abstract how do I use these licks in real life? licks, but a collection of solid musical ideas that can be applied to thousands of real songs. Another fine contribution from Red Dog Music Books, designed for the early intermediate-to intermediate guitarist. Some of the licks are accessible to highly motivated near-beginners, and the book is an excellent resource for teachers.
Product Description
This superb Red Dog Music Book and CD allows you to learn/play slide guitar fill-ins while sitting in with a crisply recorded blues band and singer. The licks are clearly written in standard notation and tablature, and the companion CD contains all 101 licks, which are applicable to countless blues songs. A guide to symbols and several helpful fretboard diagrams are included. The licks are recorded on electric guitar but can also be played on acoustic. Overall, a very fine book that will provide unlimited learning and enjoyment. Many slide guitar books are confusing because they try to cover too many tunings. Everything here is in open E. Songs include standards such as Joe Turner Blues, St. Louis Blues, Sportin Life Blues, House of the Rising Sun, Midnight Special, along with several new songs written to standard blues changes. Like Hound Dog Taylor, J.B. Hutton, and Elmore James? Then you will like this book.
Product Description
Blues guitar teachers, serious students, and blues band guitarists will all enjoy his large collection of 100% pure blues and boogie solos for guitar. Twenty-five exciting solos are presented here, each played over its own rhythm progression.
Every solo is transcribed in both standard notation and tablature, and played note for-note with a full band on the professionally recorded companion CD.
This book is for the intermediate, or better, guitarist whose interests include authentic, non-commercial blues musicthe good stuff that is seldom heard via mass-market channels such as radio and television.
Guitar teachers might use the book to introduce new hand positions, fingerings, chords, and theoretical concepts.
Each solo is made up of many interesting phrases (licks) that can be adapted and incorporated into your own style.
The solos are relatively challenging, and can be used in blues jams and on stage.
Another SUPER COOL and USEFUL music book by Larry McCabe.
Book Description
The first in a series of omnibus volumes of Marion Zimmer Bradley's best-selling Darkover series, Heritage and Exile includes the two most powerful and important novels in this groundbreaking saga.
Nominated for a Hugo Award, and described as "Bradley's best [Darkover] novel" by Locus, The Heritage of Hastur tells the complex and compelling tale of the early life of Regis Hastur, Darkover's greatest monarch. It also spins the terrifying and heartbreaking story of those who sought to control the deadly Sharra Matrix, and of how Lew Alton met and lost his greatest love, Marjorie Scott.
The most dangerous magical implement on all of Darkover was the infamous, legendary Sharra Matrix. The Sharra Matrix had been exiled offworld in the protective custody of Comyn Lord Lew Alton. But when Lew was called back to Darkover to contest his rights, he had no choice but to bring this dangerous matrix back with him. Once the Sharra Matrix was back, her flaming image spread far and wide, setting in motion events which would change the lands, the seven Domains, and the future of Darkover forever.
"Literate and exciting." (The New York Times Book Review)

I tried.......2007-02-28
One thing I hate is to leave a book unfinished. Therefore I tried again and again to go on reading to give a full review.
I failed.
There is nothing exactly wrong in Ms Zimmer Bradley's writing: she is a professional, a real competent one, she makes not one of the mistakes a less distinguished author is liable to.
Her world is potentially very interesting and her characters fully rounded.
Nevertheless I never got involved in the story, I never could relate with the characters, I only got bored and cannot really say why.
Best Darkover novels.......2006-12-08
This novels togheter are maybe the best of all Darkover novels. After reading more than 10 of the Bradley`s saga, I must say this are the one`s I`ve enjoyed the most. First they`re about the destiny of the planet itself, and history of the Comyn as we know, but not only that, the whole story is told by the eyes of Regis Hastur and Lew Alton, maybe two of the best characters trough the Darkover saga, and their personal struggles are a big plus to the story. Unfortunaly you have to endure some of the lesser novels to really grasp and enjoy this one, altough it`s said that you can read Darkover novels all but separated, the truth is when you have more background story from previous novels, all the better. DON`T MISS THIS ONES!
Great writing kept alive!.......2006-11-03
I was happy to see this and other older stories by MZB in this form since when I first found her books, sadly, most were out of print. Thank you doing this so that others can read and enjoy her superb works!
Two classic novels of Darkover.......2002-03-21
This two-in-one volume combines the already classic "Darkover" novels THE HERITAGE OF HASTUR (1975) and its direct sequel SHARRA'S EXILE (1981). If you have yet to discover the magic of Marion Zimmer Bradley's legendary creation, this a perfect volume to get introduced to the world of the bloody sun and its inhabitants. Read about the unwilling Comyn heir Regis Hastur, his forbidden love to his paxman Danilo Syrtis. Read about the dangerous Sharra matrix, a conspiration to overthrow the Comyn Council and numerous other wonders of the world of the red sun. Do not miss it.
