Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2006-03-17

A refreshing treatise on letting God orchestrate circumstances affecting us. Although a senior who has read Christian books for decades, I found author Whitson in Red Bird uniqueing offering her readers valid outlooks on dealing with the unexpected, especially those things that we would not choose, but that refine our relationship with our Lord, if we choose to let them. My faith has actually increased through access to this book, among the best I've ever read...a book that I stumbled across in our local library. Now Mrs. Whitson ranks among my favorite authors. Her books will be added to my personal home library.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have.......2006-02-15

Every book in this series is a must have and a keeper. You will
be moved to your very soul. I love the fact that a white women
and an Indian man with their love brought together such a
wonderful legacy. Don't miss a one.

5 out of 5 stars Whitson Saves the Best for Last!.......2001-03-06

If it were possible to give this one more than 5 stars, I would. This author actually gets BETTER with each sequel! Carrie Brown, affectionately called "Red Bird" by her old friend Soaring Eagle (that was the second book in the series -- read that one first, or "Red Bird" will lose you), has dreamed for years of marrying Soaring Eagle when she grows up. But is that GOD'S plan for her life? The reader asks that question over and over, as Carrie tries desperately to "maneuver herself" in a position to marry Soaring Eagle, all the while praying that he remains single until she's old enough. But what should she REALLY be praying for?

This one is truly the best in the series.

5 out of 5 stars Must Read! Gets Better With Every Book!.......2000-05-30

Number 3 in this series is the best yet... and I thought the other 2 were great! Don't read the end first, but it touches the soul. I have read it over and over. Godlyness (if there is such a word?) makes the romance even better than expected. Must Read!

5 out of 5 stars A deep, exciting conclusion to the series!.......2000-04-17

Little Carrie Brown is a young lady with plans of her own. Soaring Eagle is an educated, dedicated Christian Indian man without a wife. Life is hard, smallpox wipes out a town and a dream. In the end, many memories are revisited! This series is superb! Stephanie, you did a great job! Is there more coming?

Now that I've finished the book, I truly miss the characters. This is a "don't miss" for anyone interested in novels based in Hawaii. I have rarely read a book that is put together as well as this one.

5 out of 5 stars Hawaiian Culture Will Touch Your Soul.......2000-12-29

Being a "haole" outrigger canoe paddler, I'm fascinated with the Hawaiian culture, especially that surrounding the spiritual meaning of the canoe. Ian Mac Millian paints an extraordinarily vivid and touching picture of five generations of a "mixed breed" Hawaiian family from the 1950's through the 1990's. I'll warn you that you will laugh and cry and will hate for this book to end! The "canoe" and it's spirit are weaved throughout the story. It touched me so deeply that I named my solo outrigger canoe "Makani Ula" which is the Hawaiian translation.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Content, Cheap Paper.......2007-09-26

Excellent, thorough explanation of both American and Chinese styles of play by today's top authority. A-plus for content. However, shame on Harper Collins for the cheap ground wood paper. This is a book I'll want to keep for years, but will the pages will be brittle and yellowed when I pull it off the shelf in a couple of years? This excellent book deserves a better, more durable package.

5 out of 5 stars A British style of playing and scoring in Mah Jongg ?.......2007-08-23

I have been playing Mah Jongg for many years but have never seen a complete set of rules and scoring. It was very interesting to see these details in the book I purchased and I would hope, eventually, to contact Tom Sloper and discuss the rules and scoring that I have been using as compared with those he published.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, the world's #1 authority on mahjong has written a book........2007-07-10

Until now there has never been a book in any language that provided such a thoughtful and accurate description of how to play and how to win these two popular and important variations of mahjong.

Tom Sloper is the undeniable world authority on all things mahjong. He plays in championship tournaments all over the globe, was producer of a computer mahjong game, moderates a mahjong newsgroup, and maintains the Internet's most authoritative mahjong website.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best , most comprehensive books on Mahj ever........2007-06-15

Tom Sloper, who has long been regarded as THE expert on Mah Jongg, has really outdone himself on this excellent and incredibly complete book. He covers not only the Chinese versions but the NMJL version which has long been ignored by most Mah Jongg books. I especially loved the wealth of knowledge that Tom shares in the History & Appendix sections and the excellent strategy tips. Treat yourself and visit his top notch Mahj web site too.

    Book Description

They Say the Wind Is Red tells the history of the Choctaw Indians who managed to remain in Alabama when other southeastern Indians were forcibly removed to the West in the 1830s. This small band lived mostly hidden from public view in the swamps and piney woods of Mobile and Washington counties. Often misidentified as black or even cajun, the ancestors of today's MOWA Choctaw maintained their Indian communities throughout the 1800s and early 1900s. This book chronicles the Choctaws' pride, endurance, and persistence in the face of abhorrent conditions imposed by government at all levels.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars amazing truth that touches & hurts...a must read.......2004-04-05

All I can say is this book helps you understand the difficult, yet enduring tribe of Choctaw that live with honor--- in a harsh country they once owned. This book makes you think and feel for a people who were treated unfairly by their country and their government. This pearl of literature might have been lost in the biased written history books of America if J.A.Matte would have accepted anything less than the truth. Born in a time when women were struggling to be regconized & heard...J.A.Matte became an educator as well as a champion for American history...recorded correctly. This book really touched me & my family. Read it & know the truth.

5 out of 5 stars Great Genealogy, Great History, Great Saga.......2003-08-03

This book tells the story of my family and other native peoples whose identities were essentially taken from them by Alabama politicians who over several decades mischaracterized them as "Cajans." My great grandfather (Seaborn Reid) and his extended family were living in post-Civil War Washington and Mobile Counties in southeast Alabama where, as free mixed Indian people, his ancestors had made their homes for many years, before the state began to deny their Indian heritage. Eventually, Seaborn would bring his whole family to Mississippi to escape the arbitrary and discriminatory treatment they experienced under Alabama's laws and practices respecting his people. Once in Mississippi, he and his clan were treated as white citizens, and his progeny slowly loss their awareness of their heritage as years went by. Until I read "They Say the Wind is Red," little of this history was known by anybody in the family.

So, whether your interest lies in the genealogy of Washington and Mobile County persons, or in the history of that region, or in what is a great telling of how native peoples' identity was taken from them and how they are now seeking to reclaim their rights as members of a tribal community, this is a must-read book.

    5 out of 5 stars A people's determination to endure.......2002-10-07

Now in a newly revised edition which include a resource guide for Southeastern Indian genealogy, They Say The Wind Red: The Alabama Choctaw Lost In Their Own Land, by Jacqueline Anderson Matte (who testified as an expert witness before the U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs Hearings for federal recognition of the Alabama Choctaw) is a compelling and accurate history of those Choctaw Indians who successfully remained in Alabama, when other southeastern Indian tribes were compelled to relocate to the American West during the 1830s. The Alabama Choctaw were a small band of Native Americans who were often mistaken as being either blacks or cajun, and who stayed in the swamps and pine woods of Mobile and Washington counties in spite of federal government's efforts to remove them. An invaluable addition to the growing library of Native American Studies, They Say The Wind Is Red is very highly recommended history of pride, love of land, danger, and a people's determination to endure and preserve their way of life in spite of severe and enduring hardships.

3 out of 5 stars Story hangs together, weak ending, gross errors toward end.......1998-09-21

Good taut story line at the beginning, where the body count is building, but I thought the resolution at the end was weak. The biggest flaws for me concerned the helicopters. He wrote about an Apache in Vietnam - I don't think so. Apaches weren't produced until after Vietnam. Also, he kept alternately referring toward the end of the book to the presidential helicopter as a Blackhawk, and as a Huey (two different birds entirely). He also should have known, had he done his research, that Blackhawks have rotor de-ice kits (main and tail), and it is unthinkable that the presidential helicopter would not have one installed.

2 out of 5 stars Fair, as far as I could get........1998-06-26

Up to page 129, this one had me interested despite an inordinate number of characters. Then pages 130 thru 160 contained an excerpt of Devil's Honor (by Debra Dier). Needless to say, I was left hanging.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good book.......1998-05-12

As the person from Willtown, VA wrote, the book was very good, but there were too many characters and the ending was weak.

However, it is still a must read.

4 out of 5 stars good overall; weak ending.......1998-04-14

I enjoyed the book, but was surprised at the shallow ending. The book introduced more characters than were necessary or could be developed to any real depth.

Ramond Chandler's great gritty detective, Philip Marlow, is in Red Wind, and Elliott Gould portrays him perfectly. A mystery masterpiece by the master of mystery weaving.

        Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Audio CD edition: Great story, bad design.......2004-10-10

This is another great Raymond Chandler story, well performed by Elliott Gould. However, I can't believe that on each CD there is one 50-minute track. In other words, there are no bookmarks (other books on CDs usually have bookmarks about every 5 minutes). This means that if you stop in the middle of a CD, you will have to fast-forward 25 minutes worth of reading when you want to continue the story, which is inconvenient, and almost impossible on many CD players (they skip around after a while). I have many of these Chandler stories on tapes (Dove Audio edition). Those start with a little "jazzy" tune, which puts you right in the mood of the story. This is a detail and a personal preference, but I regret that the Millennium Audio edition doesn't have that tune.

5 out of 5 stars Red Wind By Raymond Chandler.......2001-04-17

He is back. Philop Marlowe the crime fighting gumshoe has returned to fight evil and champion the right and true. Raymond Chandler has written another spine tingling thriller that will surely blow your mind and emerse you in the ongoing plot and lead you to the exciting conclusion of this wonderful book.

5 out of 5 stars A great Raymond Chandler short story.......2000-04-04

It doesn't matter if the private eye's name is John Dalmas, it's still Phillip Marlowe and Phillip Marlowe fans won't be disappointed. Dalmas' life is saved by a beautiful woman who he initially tried to save. I won't say anymore than that because the intrigue, the classic Chandler characters and the atmosphere is all there intact. Elliott Gould is the perfect reader for this type of literature, his reading is cool and crisp and just understated enough for the listeners to lose themselves in the escapist world that is Chandler's.

For generations, the people living in North Mobile County and Southern Washington County have been lied to, persecuted, and discriminated against. They were forgotten by everyone until this author came along and tried to help them find out who they are.

It was rough growing up in a community where only a handful of people ever had a college education, and only a few more even graduated high school. There were only a few people to reference who had been there and done that.

Mrs. Matte shows the reader why.

Today the children of those who remain are struggling to have themselves identified in a system that desired clean, neat records that provide a near-perfect paper-trail.

The reality is that many of these people were illiterate up until the last 70-80 years. There was no school for indians.

They were not counted in the Census unless they were tax payers.

They were referred to as Cajans or Cajuns, mixed by blood and called Whites, Blacks, or Cajans based on skin color alone, however many people in the same family had features that to the unitiated appeared as all three.

My family shares these traits... My father's father had light colored eyes and light skin. My father is of a terracotta skin tone and my sister has a "tanned" skin tone and both have brown eyes, and I am blond and blue. Yet we are the same family.

My cousins and their cousins are the same.

Thank you Jackie for taking the time to chronicle some of the stories of a people who are truly fighting for their very survival.

This book tells some of those stories.

        Sincerely,

        Darby Weaver Jr.

When she offers him a job with great adventure and great risk he blindly accepts, little realizing just what an incredible trek he has let himself in for: a journey through some of the twenty universes where Star is Empress, on a quest to retrieve the stolen Great Egg. The grandest pure adventure from the genres master storyteller, Glory Road is a masterpiece of escapist entertainment with a typically Heinleinian sting in its tail.

5 out of 5 stars Read, wait X years... repeat........2007-05-13

I first read this book after reading "Tunnel in the Sky", "Have Spacesuit, Will Travel" and "Time for the Stars", so I was a bit surprised when it read more like a dungeons and dragons story. Beautiful woman, pulls normal everyday guy into an alternate dimension where they travel by foot with her halfling companion.... The plot isn't even in the same ballpark as the other works I mentioned, but the writing and style are definetly Heinlein.

Destiny and Fate seem to be underlying themes throughout the book. The main character seems "hand picked" for the task at hand, while his female companion is destined to be a galactic ruler of sorts. Looking beyong the sci-fi, action adventure plot-line, it's easy to see Heinlein was trying to tell us all that we may not always be the master's of our destiny.

If you like Heinlein as an author, you'll like this book despite the departure from his usual theme. Its a book you'll pick up five years from now, re-read and discover something completely new.

2 out of 5 stars No Real Ending.......2006-07-27

After reading this, I didn't have the 'warm and fussy' feeling. The ending is somewhat weak, and beware not to read the back of your book (depending on which print you have), mine had a spoiler on it.

I love Heinlein's book, but wish he had choosen another ending.

        4 out of 5 stars Glory Road.......2006-03-15

A Sci-fi Classic. Had not read it in years. Enjoyed as much now as I did in the past.

5 out of 5 stars Irony is a lost art.......2006-02-25

Glory Road is, in my never humble opinion, one of the finest books ever written. It has long been my own personal favorite and the older I get the more I find to love. However, you cannot judge a great author merely on the surface of his text. The power of Glory Road, like many great works before it, lies in the undercurrents running silently between the lines.

This book was originally written in the midst of the Vietnam War. America was in constant social turmoil with "youth power" attempting to overthrow the "wisdom" of the elderly. Russia had signed SALT 1, then turned around and deployed hundreds of SS-22 intercontinental ballistic missiles. Our world was a bloody mess. Although it is hard to believe now, in many ways things were far worse at the time this book was written.

The first time I read Glory Road, it was a swash-buckling high adventure with a surprising, almost depressing ending. Now I pick it up and begin turning the pages to find insightful social commentary, scathing criticism of both those in power and their critics, and an ironic chuckle at the total foolishness of the human animal.

Star, for example, is every man's dream woman. Blonde, buxom, and unreachable. When she finally falls, she reverts to a half-witted emotional dependent leaning on her hero's strong arm.

Then twenty pages later she turns out to be a galatic empress commanding more worlds that most people ever dream of.

The convoluted nature of her character is completely intentional. At first Star embodies all the traits of a fictional heroine in a genre that has a powerful inclination to objectify women. Then, when she is suddenly unveiled as a nearly omnipotent galatic ruler, the dichotomy tears aside the traditional depiction of women and reminds us that these "frail" creatures carry an inner strength and unshakable sense of self which humiliates and humbles anyone foolish enough to challenge them directly. Women, we are reminded, are just as human as the men. The strong hero is suddenly in the role of dependent and discovers he hasn't got what it takes to fulfill the role he'd been more than willing to assign to her.

Glory Road is, on the surface, a semi-serious story of high-sdventure with a quirky ending. Underneath that shallow surface, however, lies an ironic coming of age story in the life of a man who suddenly finds himself outside the bounds of normal reality. "Scar" Gordon starts out a slave to fate, but winds up the master of his own destiny.

Glory Road is not about dragonslaying at all. Glory Road is about breaking free of the assumptions that chain each of us into predefined social templates that are so completely engrossing we cannot see how insane our society has become until we step outside it.

This isn't a book about adventure. This is a book about the limitations of your own assumptions.

4 out of 5 stars There's not much to do for a retired Hero.......2006-02-08

I began reading RAH's novels in the early `50s, mostly as they appeared. Every decade or so, I go back and reread them, and probably will continue to do so for the rest of my life. Even with his overwriting (which is part of his charm) and the gentle preaching and not-so-gentle opinionating, his stories are always a romp. This is one of the better ones (and Heinlein's only true fantasy novel), about "Scar" Gordon, mid-20s, just released from the U.S. Army after a run-in with Little Brown Brother in southeast Asia, and now at loose ends in the cheapest corner of the French Riviera he can find -- the Île du Levant, where clothing and costs both are very minimal. There he meets "Star," an Amazonian sort of woman, and loses her, and finds her again -- not realizing he's been selected and set up for a quest in a world on the other side of the looking-glass. He's now a genuine Hero, like it or not, . . . but he learns to like it, mostly. There's Good Guys and Bad Guys and monsters and even fire-breathing dragons, but Gordon manages to overcome it all. But what does a retired Hero *do*? Loads of fun!

            Book Description

Glory Days conjures up images of cruise nights, impromptu drag races, and genuine American fun. It is the story of the GTO, Tigers and Monkees, of Royal Pontiac, drag racing, corporate politics, and personal allegiances. Glory Days illuminates anera when Detroit's Woodward Avenue fairly rumbled with V-8 power, as young people slowly cruised the wide boulevard. Glory Days is also an American success story, giving an insiders view of what it took then, and what it will take in the future, to keep alive America's passion for the automobile. In Glory Days, Jim Wangers uses his 45-year career in Detroit as the basis for explaioning successful brand marketing for automobiles:

Why brand management for cars differs from other branded products

How to position a model for the best possible tie-in promotion--and how not to

What it takes to establish and evolve a brand image Wangers knows what he is talking about, for he was part of the most successful brand marketing campaign to ever come out of Detroit. At a time when such automotive legends as Bunkie Knudsen, Pete Estes, and John DeLorean hald sway in the Motor City, Jim Wangers created and defined the American muslecar image, devising savvy brand marketing strategies to promote the car that started it all and went on to become a cultural icon: the Pontiac GTO.

5 out of 5 stars A Man and Car Culture.......2001-02-06

A fascinating read. I could not put this book down. A well-written insider perspective on the automobile industry and American car culture. In a nutshell, Mr. Wangers is a car marketing maven. The question is, did car culture influence Mr. Wangers or did Mr. Wangers influence car culture? Did Mr. Wangers influence mass American culture? This book "asks" many questions and raises interesting points. What are the constraints in designing, marketing and engineering an automobile? What role should the govenment take? On the one hand, Mr. Wangers is lightly critical of the federal government regarding emissions and safety issues. On the other hand, he views govt. regulation as a challenge that fosters creativity and engineering prowess. Certainly, the government saved the car industry by forcing it to develop emissions and safety devices. This is a well rounded book for the Sociologist, the historian, and anybody who might enjoy a great read on the automibile industry. Nicely illustrated. There was one glaring omission: Did Wangers maintain his relationship with John DeLorean during his Cocaine distribution trial?

4 out of 5 stars A view from the inside.......2000-01-12

This book takes you back and gives you a private look at the planning and development of the car that started the whole Muscle Car Craze. From figuring out how to get this car built around GM's policies on horsepower to weight ratio, to fighting off the compitition in 1969 with the introduction of "The Judge"! How they developed the Royal Pontiac cars, and how they had to fight every step of the way with the EPA, and other government agencies! Lots of photos, and history here!

3 out of 5 stars good nastalgic info and pictures.......1999-10-31

I am a big pontiac fan, i own a 1966 GTO conv. with a 455, turbo 400, 4.56 gears, runs mid elevens and i drive it on the street. my wife has a 1976 formula 400 also. so i am big on performance and nastalgia also. the book was good dont get me wrong, butnot what i thought it would be! jim wangers is a pontiac and GTO legend to us poncho guys,i thought the entire book would be about pontiacs and their great performance of the sixties, instead i read a lot of negitive things about ponchos.even the pictures like the one of the swiss cheese catalina racing the ford, he said he lost that race, come on jim, your not supposed to say that, let us guys have a little glory please! and telling of losing street races. and half the book was about jim with jobs with chevy, ford and keiser. sorry jim i didnt buy this book to read about 1977 mustang cobra twos or advertising about pacer wagons! give me a break! you really dropped the ball on this one! maybe some day another old pontiac racer will come out with a book and talk about some good times and real performance of pontiacs!!!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Interesting perspective but not the definitive on super duty.......1999-01-01

Mr Wanger's book is an interesting historical perspective on the development of the muscle car era at the Pontiac division. It seems to be a very complete history of the development of the GTO with details that can only be known by a industy insider. My only critisim is that that while he alludes to the real bad boy Super Duties in several places he never really spells out what they were "bad to the bone dual quad, 12to1 compression ratio 421's" These were truly Pontiac's finest hour. He also does not do justice to the great Malcom MacKeller whos genious was reponsible for the development of a whole series of camshafts used at Pontiac includ- ing the Super Duties. Wangers remembers lots of racing in the book and the cheating that often took place;he does not recount the night that after bragging that he had the fastest" GTO on Woodward " he ran a race against a 1962 white Catalina with a real 421 Super Duty not a consumer version with three two's. The outcome of that encounter very well could be be deeply reperessed as the Catalina led him by a football field at a 110 mph. This encounter happened in 1967 and it might be called Wolf in Sheep's Clothing or The Night Encouner with Super Duty #3 vin#16373. All in all I would recommend this book to anyone in Pontiac history but its not the last word on on the subject.

            Book Description

In 1966, college basketball was almost completely segregated. In the championship game for the NCAA title that year, Don Haskins, coach of the then little-known Texas Western College, did something that had never been done before in the history of college basketball. He started five black players and in the now legendary game, unseated the nationally top-ranked University of Kentucky. Broadcast on television throughout the country, the Miners victory became the impetus for the desegregation of all college teams in the South during the next few years. Now, for the first time, Hall of Fame coach Don Haskins tell his story. Beginning as a small-town high school basketball coach, Haskins was known for his tough coaching methods and larger-than-life personality. As a child growing up during the Dust Bowl in Oklahoma, he developed a strong set of values and discipline that he would instill in his players throughout his coaching career. With recollections from his former players, including those of the 1966 team, along with Haskinss own Seven Principles for Success, Glory Road is the inspiring story of a living legend and one of the most respected coaches of all time. With a foreword by basketball legend Bobby Knight, and coinciding with the release of the film Glory Road, the story of Don Haskins and his championship team is sure to become a classic for sports fans and historians.

5 out of 5 stars A few observations from someone who was there.......2007-06-10

Your current published reviews are enthusiastic but in some cases contain factual inaccuracies. The movie and the book are related in title and subject (Don Haskins); but that is about as far as it goes. The movie which focuses on 1966 is moving and concludes with a happy and factual ending - that is, that Texas Western won that game in 1966 --- but the movie not always true to the facts. Understandably I suppose when you try to compress a life story, even if only one year of a life, into a 2 hour or so movie. The book, from someone who played for Coach, reviewed and commented on the galley proof, and has represented Coach Haskins and the '66 team as a lawyer and a friend for 35 plus years, is "spot-on" and should be read by everyone who has ever had an interest in basketball.

As to the fortunes of 1966 team and the gentlemen representing that team so well, then and now, suffice it to say that the past 3 or 4 years have indeed been a trip down Glory Road: The team was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, MA this past April, only the 6th team to ever be so honored - and the first collegiate team --- with the enshrinement proceedings to be held on September 7 and 8, 2007 at the HOF facility. The team has also been honored with dinner and a movie at the White House with President and Mrs. Bush; the team will be inducted in the Boys Clubs of New York Hall of Fame in October of 2007, and some of the members volunteered to take an Armed Services Entertainment Tour to Germany, the Netherlands and England in February of 2007 to entertain our country's troops and their families. Also, Texas Western's victory on March 19, 1966 in College Park, Maryland over Hall of Fame Coach Adolph Rupp and his great Kentucky Wildcat team, that included Pat Riley, Louie Dampier and Larry Conley, among others, was selected by the National Collegiate Athletic Association ("NCAA") as one of 25 defining moments in the 100 year History of NCAA sports.

I could go on but I think this should at least clear up a few matters and hopefully whet the appetite of prospective readers and reviewers to pause and consider reading this book, viewing the movie. Coach Haskin's story is presented in an interesting manner, containing both Coach Haskin's well known skills as a pick-up riding around story teller and the literary skills of Dan Wetzel who spent hours upon hours riding, listening and recording those stories.

It is well written and factual to a fault; and points out what people can do when they put aside prejudices, rediculous stereoptypes (blacks had no discipline, couldn't be a point guard or quarterback) and circumstances and judge people by character and performance; not color and privilege. Every one of those (then but now not so) young men -- all are still alive except Bobby Joe Hill who passed away of a heart attack in 2002 --- that comprised the Texas Western Team in 1966 had talent and skill; more importantly they had character and heart and respect for each other and their coaches and that combination took them to over the top.

Enjoy this story and share it with others - because of their courage and accomplishments, and those of others in other aspects of the 60's civil rights movement, questions surrounding recruiting, playing, starting and honoring people of color in sports today seem strangely quaint, and beyond the imagination of most people born after the '60s. But it wasn't always so and for this all of society owes a debt of gratitude to Don Haskins, the members of his '66 team, the University of Texas at El Paso (formerly Texas Western College) and the citizens of El Paso for contributing to the environment in which we now find ourselves with respect to race relations in sports.

            5 out of 5 stars Kudos to a teammate!.......2007-04-05

I have the honor of being Don Haskins teammate at Oklahoma A & M, now Oklahoma State University and couldn't be prouder and happier for a very good film about a very historic Coach and athletic event. Please be advised that Don's whole 1966 team was just inducted into the new Collegiate Hall of Fame in Kansas City, Missouri. Buy it, you will like it...!

5 out of 5 stars An Autobiography That Needs To Be Read.......2006-11-30

In one of those quirky moments in the book and movie industries, the autobiography of coach Don Haskins was already "in the pipeline" before the development of the picture.

The book and movie share the title - Glory Road - which is a name of a street on the UTEP campus to commemorate the championship basketball season.

The book obviously gives a more fuller picture of Haskins and does not solely focus on the monumental victory by Texas Western College (UTEP) over Kentucky in the 1966 NCAA Finals. There will be areas "filled-in" where the movie takes artistic license with some facts/scenes to push the plot along.

The years after the title run are especially interesting, since the basketball program somewhat faded from national view as the sport became a multi-billion-dollar industry.

It is a shame that history - especially when it comes to matters of race - oftentimes become blurry as the years lumber forward. Though Haskins has always downplayed his role in what was a defining moment on the court of race & athletics, he truly deserved the attention from the national platform that propelled the book to national bestseller status.

The lessons learned along that glory road are as important today as they were 40 years ago.

I had great service arrived just in time for fathers day and my father went to UTEP during the duration of the book so it made for a great fathers day present and the service from amazon was awsome thanks alot amazon.

5 out of 5 stars AN AMAZING BOOK.......2006-06-08

Glory Road is a very expiring book. I like how it tells people how it was for African American people to play professional basketball and it helps understand teamwork.
I thought it was very cool how they told you what white people did to black people. One part of the book one of the black players goes to the bathroom and two white guys jump him and beat him up. Thats how rotten people can be to others just because of their skin color.
There is a lot of teamwork in this book also. At the end of the novel the coach tells the players only black people will be playing in the championship and the white guys cheer them on. The team had a rough time in the beginning because of the skin color but by the end they worked it out and won. That shows true teamwork.

                  Book Description

Across Arkansas men marched away to subdue devils"oeither Yankee or Confederate"odepending on one¡¦s politics. Unfortunately devils of another breed stayed behind. In the spellbinding novel Where the Road Begins, author Nancy Dane brings alive a time when marauding bushwhackers rode the hills and when women had as much to fear as any soldier. This clash between North and South took a conscripted youth, Elijah Loring, far from the banks of Little Piney Creek down a road where terror and war awaited. After returning home a hardened man, he suffered lost love, and in this lawless land, confronted dangers as great as any endured in the crushed Confederate army. Where the Road Begins is based on the documentary history Tattered Glory, also compiled by the author.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful novel of Civil War chaos in the Arkansas Ozark Mountains.......2007-09-02

Where the Road Begins by Nancy Dane is a wonderful Civil War tale,
her writing reminded me much of Gap Creek by best selling author Robert Morgan. The page turning novel about a family struggling to survive during war stated 'Book One' on the cover. I hope there's a Book Two!

Among this genre, it is now one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting Civil War Novel.......2007-06-26

This story begins in 1861 near Little Piney Creek in central Arkansas. It follows teenaged Elijah and his family as they experience the fear and horror of war. It was a war that waged all around them and had consequences that affected every person in the countryside. The dialogue rings true and authentic; allowing the reader to come to know and care about the characters. The detail of everyday life is a reflection of her research; it paints a vivid picture of common people caught up in uncommon circumstances. Well researched, well written and I could not put it down!
