Review of Audio Version.......2007-08-23
I'm enjoying the book in a "guilty pleasure" sort of way. It's light, and funny and pretty standard whodunit. But the narrator is driving me batty!! Her voice inflections when she's doing any voice other than Bailey's is totally whacky. She pauses at the wrong places, every sentence goes up at the end like a question but it's not a question and she has a very odd delivery. It is completely distracting from the flow of the story.
My daughter and I are avid audio book listeners due to lengthy, daily commutes so we understand how critical a good "reader" is to the success of an audio book. And this one is just bad!
Got me wanting More!!!.......2007-08-06
I finished this book late last night. I couldn't put it down because she kept you guess through out the book. I really enjoyed the mystry and Romance this book brought with it.Every day I had to go back to the book to find out what happened next...Good read ENJOY!!!
Review of the Unabridged Audio Book.......2007-07-31
The problem with audiobooks is that if there is a editing screw-up or a phrase that the author uses repeatedly it is more obviously on an audiobook. For instance that space down the middle of a multi-lane highway is a "median" not a "meridian". And by the time Baily had finished her interview I was very, very tired of hearing "I just have one more question". I was complaining about the "one more question" to a friend who said she did that when doing cross and recently the judge had looked at her sardonically and said "No you don't-- you have a lot more." Which is what I wanted to say to Bailey.
Anyway the audiobook was quite well read although the narrator was different from the first Bailey Weggans book I listened to a year ago.
These books are a guilty pleasure to me. The only glossy magazine I read on a regular basis is Vanity Fair-- for the crime stories, yah know. I don't think I've ever read a Cosmopolitan magazine. I'm nowhere near the demographic that I believe Bailey Weggans is geared to and I doubt if I have any idea what a pair of Blahniks would look like. In fact it is a lot like reading a fantasy novel where the author has to do world building-- a skill Kate White has, as she makes me believe that this is what a glossy, gossip magazine would be like under these circumstances.
Great Book.......2007-06-11
I've read all the Kate White books, and they are always great reads.
Bailey Has a New Job, New Magazine to Write for, New Boss, Well the Boss Not for Long!.......2007-03-14
This is more of a who done it Weggins adventure then her previous adventures which had a bit more action as the killer was usually trying to kill her or at least warn her off for the majority of those books as well. There are a few pages of that in here but nothing like in a Body to Die For or If Looks Could Kill. This is probably the most realistic of the adventures though, especially the ending with how the murderer is discovered although some fans of White's may have prefered a more unrealistic one. You do not need to have read other books in this great series to either understand or enjoy this novel to its full extent.
Bailey Weggins is back for another adventure and this time life isn't looking to great for her career wise. She has been let go from her contract with the magazine Gloss and with the book of her crime stories not yet finished she knows it will bomb without the endorsement of the national magazine. Her friend Robby lets her in on the secret of a new celebrity crime column about to be launched at his tabloid magazine Buzz and that they're looking for a writer. Buzz isn't exactly the type of magazine Bailey is into but she does need an endorsement for her book's publicity so decides she'll give it a go for six months. Only thing is the editor Mona, is a well known itch with a capital B, who seems to enjoy humiliating and bullying her workers. At least Bailey doesn't have to answer directly to her. It is not long before no one has to anymore as one night Bailey stumbles upon her convulsing in the last throws of life along with the cleaning lady who both have head injuries in her office.
Bailey only was there to get a document for Robby who was fired earlier that day and is of course the prime suspect. Bailey of course has to investigate to clear her friend's name plus since Mona was a bit of a celebrity Bailey also has to write the article on the crime for Buzz. Only thing is pretty much everyone at Buzz had encounters with Mona, they all hated her, they all have a motive as do a number of celebrities Buzz has humiliated and cost endorsement contracts.

Suspense Thriller.......2007-07-10
I really enjoyed this book. I have never read any of the author's previous novels. My daughter gave me this one to read.
Keeley Farrell is a determined young woman, she has had a different and difficult life but she is a wonderful warm person. The type of person I would love to be. She is a straight shooter and abhors liars. Keeley was a nun for several yrs and worked in Africa facing murder and death daily. She is a nurse and now she has come home to save Mayday House from ruin. Her godmother has died and left the home to her. She works daily to find funding for the home to help abused and pregnant women.
Gus Hammond is a former gigilo, which he freely admits to. He has come to Mayday house to try to buy it for his former lover, As a final favor. Gus has had a dark and trying life himself. He neither asks for nor gives forgiveness. He simply does what he thinks is right. The secrets of Mayday House may be dangerous and he finds Keeley needs a protector.
Keeley's godmother had made three phone calls before her death and now the complications caused by these calls will land on Keeley's red head. Gus finds more than he expects when he meets Keeley. This woman is an earth mother in that she still expects the best from people and doesn't seem to find it hard to give or recieve forgiveness. She is willing to give of herself and time to others. I found the two to be total opposites and therein lies the crux of this story.
Unbeknownest to Keeley someone desires her death. However, the central story revolves around Gus's ex-lover and the father of a child adopted out of Mayday House. I found this book fasinating, the relationships between Keeley and Gus, and all the other characters was so intriging I could not put it down. I will look for more books by this author.
Slow and steady suspense from beginning to end.......2006-02-08
Keeley Farrell never knew her godmother- Mary Weaver as anything but wonderful until after the woman's death. Secrets that were once kept locked away, never to be uttered again, have resurfaced in Mary's dying confessions to the ones she wronged, who will stop at nothing to make sure the past stays buried.
Now Keeley's life is in danger from the people who think she knows too much. Gus Hammond may be the only person who can keep the peace while they uncover the clues of a horrible crime that happened nearly thirty five years earlier, but can he be trusted when he has his own agenda in the game? His feelings for Keeley Farrell, an ex-nun are confusing and yet too much for him to deny. Can he protect her from the danger quickly surrounding her home and the secrets of the past, or will he betray her trust for his own personal gain?
Over Her Dead Body's main character Gus Hammond is none other than Gus Vanelleto from E.C. Sheedy's previous novel "Killing Bliss." This romantic suspense novel is not near as dark a tale and actually makes Gus out to be more of the type of man you want to read about. The book was well written. It moved along nicely keeping the suspense going. It had a flare of mystery to it. Throughout the story, the reader is presented with small clues to the outcome, and yet predictable before the conclusion, each reveal is a little bit of a twist to the plot and makes for interesting reading along the way. Even the characters were easy to connect with unlike in "Killing Bliss."
So, Is it worth buying?
Yes. I enjoyed it very much. I do not think it is necessary to have read "Killing Bliss" either. Yes, you could get a better idea of how tortured a past Gus had before meeting Keeley, but most of the important things are mentioned in this novel. All in all, it was a fairly decent read.
Book Description
The conjuction of death, art, and femininity is a rich and unexplored stratum of Western culture. Why do dead women fascinate even as they repel? Why is the death of a beautiful woman figure so centrallly located in art and literature? And what does this tell us about the role of women in contemprary Westen society? In Over Her Dead Body, Elisabeth Bronfen attempts to remap the history of Western thought about women's bodies. material from a common repertoire of cultural images, can be read as symptoms of our culture.

A So-So book.......2007-07-05
This book wasn't a bad book but it wasn't an oustanding book either. I enjoyed the story, the plot, the twists and turns. What I didn't enjoy was the characters. I wasn't drawn to a single one. Matter of fact, there was not one that I cared about what happened to them. That is a very important factor in a book. If you do not care about the characters, why would you care about what happens. I will get the second book though, only to hope that it will be written better. If not, I won't bother with the third.
Absolutely wonderful.......2007-06-11
Although I agree with one of the other reviews (This book is NOT for children!), the imagery that Margaret is able to produce in this book (and the rest of the series) is absolutely fabulous.
Yes, it contains lesbian romance and physical love.
Yes, it contains lots of violence that is very well described.
Yes, it contains a brutal rape.
**What is more disturbing is that the RAPE and the lesbian romance was what most of these reviews are about. Nevermind the extreme violence right? That is ok, just don't write that 2 women are kissing and making love?
Wonderful book. I love Margaret Weis and will continue to read anything she writes :P
This book ROCKED!.......2007-05-27
I loved this book, I bought it online and half way through it (a few hours later) I ordered the second.. and then third. The most painful part of this book for me was waiting for the mail to arrive! And reading the rest of these reviews. I see many parents complaining about how they allowed their children to read it - well who's fault is that? You shouldn't assume a fantasy book that is not sold in the childrens department to be suitable until you have read it through yourself. The rape scene was terrible... and there were no lovemaking scenes at all really - it seems sad to me that we read such brutality but not the same in love. Though to be honest I don't really like either.. relationships are great, hand holding and kissing - but not keen on sex in books - if I were I'd buy erotica.
I was also alarmed by peoples reactions to the lesbian content. It seemed many people thought it was there to entertain teenagers *blinks* maybe it's just there because unlike all of you Margaret as noticed that *gasp* we do exist.. everywhere and have for centuries. As a lesbian, if I can appreciate the love between Tika and Caramon, and not assume it is put there for the purpose of making teenagers giggle, i don't see why hetrosexuals can't deal with Lesbianism for just being what it is. It's two people in love, it's a beautiful thing - there was nothing graphic in there at all. And It was refreshing for me personally to read a wonderful fantasy book, that just happened to have a lesbian couple in it.. I'd like to read more but sadly don't know of any.
i loved everything about this book.. and the whole series as I said with the exception of the rape scene.. though i guess to an extent it was needed just not quite so graphically. It was a storyline I had not seen before that kept me captivated from begining to end, and I loved Draconas!
Book gets better.......2007-01-22
The town of Seth is protected from dragons by the Mistress of Dragons, a human who is viewed as a goddess. When a nearby kingdom is harrassed by a dragon, a mysterious dragon hunter appears and advises its king to go on a sojourn to request the aid of the Mistress of Dragons in Seth.
The unfolding of the story is slow and filled with events that the reader will find hard to believe, even in a fantasy. A follower of the Dragon Lance saga will be wondering how the co-author of those [mostly] glorious books could have written this weak story. The reader will find some humorous sections in the first third of the book but, even with these, he may find himself questioning whether he should bother finishing the book. The answer to that question is a qualified yes. The book does get better as it progresses. If the reader finishes the book, he will probably decide to go ahead and get the sequel. But, the book's beginning is such a disappointment, many readers will not get far enough along in the book to find out that it does get better.
Having read most of the Dragon Lance books written by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, and then having read books written separately by each of these authors, this reviewer can only conclude that it was something in the pairing of these two individuals that made so many of their books worth reading.
Age inappropriate for pre-teens & "tweens".......2007-01-15
I've bought many of the Weis/Hickman Dragonlance books for my son over the past couple of years. He has been greatly delighted in the writing, so I bought him the Dragonvald Trilogy. He, of course, read them immediately before I could get to them. When I finally got to Mistress of Dragons, I was extremely unhappy with the in depth lesbianism, crude references to heterosexualism and the graphic description of a violent rape. I felt these depictions were not suitable for pre-teens or "tweens" and I was greatly upset that nowhere was there any indication that these topics were included so responsible parents would be able to make an informed choice as to whether or not to allow their children to read such a story.

Complexity can be overwhelming.......2007-05-18
There are many things that separate a good book from a poor or average one and complexity of plot and character is one of them. When things are too simple the reader is not given enough information to empathize with the characters. Plots too need to be detailed enough to keep the reader interested but not confuse them.
Sadly I think this novel is too complex. I found myself needing to take notes and go back and forth to try and figure out who characters were -- now I know that the characters themselves were confused but I as the reader really should not be that confused.
The main character is Sean Shadden and did develop a bit of empathy for him though frankly his emotional and drug problems canceled much of that out. There were so many other characters that I literally had difficulty keeping some of them straight in my mind. If I can't have at least two characters to feel strongly for, I have a hard time finding the romance.
In terms of sex, there is a lot of it here. Sometimes it seems consensual, sometimes not; sometimes it is well detailed, other times it is vaguely described. None of that is bad in and of itself if we have characters we can relate to and want to follow.
I was very disappointed in this book. Having not read other JJ Giles books I can't say if this book is her standard writing or unique.

At 599 pages Lady Dragon is a sprawling work with many delicious characters, plots and sub-plots, global locations from Medieval Europe to mid-America and enough of a history/ fantasy/ fiction theme to keep you turning the pages.
Oh yes, and there is sex, lots and lots of sex and romance. Potential readers should be advised that if the themes of D/s and BDSM aren't your cup of tea you should look elsewhere for your reading enjoyment. But for those of us who do not shy away from a bit of bondage, discipline and dominance, and incredible hot, steamy sex.....then get comfortable and hold on for the ride baby! It doesn't get much better than this.
If you enjoy the Marketplace works of Laura Antoniou then J.J. Giles' centuries-old Academy and the delicious slave "ponies" will fascinate you.
If you love the rich, jet-setting, Irish rogue, Roarke, from J.D. Robb's (Nora Roberts) "...in Death" series then you will certainly be swept away by the rich and rakish Barry Miller from the Australian outback.
If past lives, centuries-old memories, timeless unrequited love, the epic struggle between good and evil for the soul of man, and psychic powers (think Ann Rice) interest you it can all be found in Lady Dragon.
Author J.J. Giles has crafted a story of global power politics, history and religion, sex and seduction, revenge, lust and love. The first in a series, this book concludes with some plot lines unresolved (you are teasing us Ms. Giles) and leaves us wanting MORE! It hasn't ended yet; don't let it stop now. Ouch! May we please have some more?

A good yarn, but terrible presentation.......2006-02-27
It's a pretty good story, actually several stories in one. Going back and forth between the plots is not distracting. That would get the book 5 stars.
I leave off one star for two annoying features. The first seems to be characteristic of vanity press. While the author has no doubt used a spell checker, he has not given the book to be proofread by a native speaker of proper English. The author is consistent in mistaking heard for herd and tomb for tome. I realize that there is a vocal group of readers who claim that good English is not necessary for a good story. Sorry, but every time the rules of English are broken, the movie in my head skips. And I hate that.
The second annoying feature is the author's insistence of showing us how a character's name is pronounced the first time the name is introduced. Even for the trivial names. I found this mildly insulting. Part of the fun of reading a book with funny names is figuring out the pronounciation. Tens of thousands of SF/Fantasy books leave it up to the reader to work it out. Others choose to put in a pronounciation guide as an appendix. Just as with bad English, I found the parenthetical pronounciations jarring and unnecessary.
Aside from these "mechanical" faults, the only fault I have with the plot is the solution of how a dragon mates with a human. There is tremendous build-up in the plot, and finally 3/4 of the way though the book, we find out. I personally found the solution quite boring and mundane.
Despite its flaws, this book stands head and shoulders above the rest of the vanity press books I've read.
Thank (thangk) you (yoo) Michael (my-kul) Mennenga (men-en-gay)!
An imaginative and adventurous story.......2003-01-05
Mistress Of The Dragon by Michael R. Mennenga is the fantastic fantasy tale of Petrill, a half human half dragon child born from the love between Tigora (a powerful and majestic dragon), and Morana, a noble-hearted woman whose love for her dragon mate provides the strength to escape her tormenting captors. With kinship to two worlds, Petrill searches for a sense of belonging - what love can come for one who is descended from scales as well as skin? Mistress Of The Dragon is recommended as an imaginative and adventurous story embracing themes of defining humanity and finding a balance in an unusual and diverse heritage.
A Captivating Story.......2002-04-10
One could easily believe that Mr. Mennenga personally consorts with wizards, fairies and dragons from the believable way he describes them and tells their stories. They draw you in and make you want more. I could visualize the old Wizard Nefress and the tattered and aging Tigora who's love for Morana was so true and yet tragic. I've read this story twice and am now ready for a third time as it takes me away to visit a very wonderful place filled with fascinating creatures and characters. A must read for all fantasy fiction lovers.
My kind of dragon story.......2001-12-12
This book delves into the relationship a human has with a dragon. Quite literally, an astounding display of romance and will in the mind of both human and dragon. The dragon suddenly becomes a center of interest for readers. One would think how the dragon responds to the different situations throughout the book. His reactions and thoughts are so human and yet he is still the dragon. The love between the main characters is artistic and absolutely beautiful, the very epitome of true love itself. The differences between human and dragon are immediately discarded when you read this book. You will treat them as equals when you see the journeys they take. Fans of dragons will enjoy this book, as well as romantics.
