Super cool.......2007-09-23
I read a lot of books in my life but no jokes, this the funniest book i ever read. wow. this petit nicola is awesome. I recomend that u have a little french background so u can easily understand it. I love it. Every body that speaks french should get one
Adorable and Educational.......2007-05-07
I use Le petit Nicolas in my French classes. The book is divided into short chapters that students enjoy. The syntax can be challenging, but it also prepares them for more authentic literature in French 4. I highly recommend this book (and others in the Nicolas collection) to students, teachers, and French-lovers looking for a funny read.
Very Good.......2007-03-16
This is one of a series that I have found helpful in bettering my spelling, sentence structure, and overall confidence in the French language. Reading French goes a very long way to establishing and maintaining grammatic skills, and reinforces the many diverse ways that a new language differs from one's native tongue. I have no real teacher, and am grateful for resources like this that are keeping me moving forward.
very pleased.......2006-11-06
book arrived 5 days earlier than expected. book is very cute and simple. good for children who speak french or french students.
Hard to overstate the charm...........2006-03-20
It would be hard to overstate the charm of these wonderful stories. Like many others, I picked up this book to help with my project of trying to teach myself French. Not only does it serve that purpose, but it is so engaging that it has held me on course when the inherent difficulty of the language and some cross-cultural exasperation has tempted me to chuck the whole project. No way could I ever write this little dude and his copains out of my life.
Although hilarious, the Nicolas stories also touch you in a much deeper place. He is a little boy full of life and good humor, but he and his friends are also filled with every possible anxiety about growing up and finding their manly places in the world. They are charmingly obsessed with their status and their dignity.
One of my favorite stories is "Louisette," which recounts the visit of a young girl who comes with her mother for tea. Nicolas is pouty from the beginning as his mother dresses him up, in his view, like a clown. And maman assures him that if he doesn't show that he is well raised, he will have an affair with her!
Although Nicolas is always filled with explanations that burst forth in run-on sentences, this traumatic visit brings him close to tears more than once. In Nicolas's world, not crying is one of the main imperatives. Another is assuming a male's naturally dominant [irony] and superior role over young girls, who, after all, cry all the time.
Louisette starts off telling Nicolas that he looks like a monkey and things go downhill from there. She is so much more quick-witted, not to mention athletic, that she repeatedly leaps ahead and distracts him just when he is deciding whether to give her a punch in the nose or to pull her hair. And it is Louisette who is landing all the successful coups on Nicolas. Meanwhile, Louisette is always batting her eyelashes at the mamans and impressing them with what an adorable innocent she is!
As with the "Louisette" story of a young boy having to deal with a very formidable young girl who does not fit into his template defining his superior place in the world, all these stories are filled with such very real anxieties of male childhood. Let me say again, though, they are very, very funny! You love this kid.
How easy/difficult is this book for a student of French. My feeling is that previous reviews have made it seem a little easier than it is. There are definitely difficult bits such as when Nicolas is playing cowboys and describes all the various cowboy accoutrements that he and his friends have hung on themselves. Often, too, sentences are very run-on, mimicking Nicolas's overflowing emotions and self-justifications. And the mannerisms of his speech are realistic and more difficult than the dry dialogue of textbooks. But this is worth a little difficulty - I just want to caution against expecting a child's book to be extremely easy. It is manageable, but not in the first few weeks of studying French.
I also have a two-CD set of these stories read in French which I ordered from Amazon.fr. The CD set is a dramatic reading and it is an absolute delight. But it is considerably more difficult than the book. Those run-on sentences are read in rapid bursts, as intended. The reading wonderfully captures the charm of the book but definitely does not make it any easier.
My only exasperation with the Nicolas books is that I can not share them with my English-only friends. They touched me so much and made me laugh so hard. I hope I have inspired someone here.

1000% + Satisfaction!!! .......2007-05-12
It's guaranteed the entire series of "Petit Nicolas" can bring you all the joy / laughters / tears (joyful one) + a total satisfaction. You never have enough after reading and always want to read it again and again. Try the original French version for it's using the "easy understanding" child French. Vive "Petit Nicolas"! J'adore Goscinny Sempe!!!
Le Petit Nicolas et Les Copains.......2007-01-04
Our French class is enjoying the escapades of this charming little boy and his friends.
BEST BOOK IN FRENCH!!!!.......2006-06-07
This is the best book ever It helped me a lot while learing French it's much easier and funnier than any other book i've rea d in french It makes french seem fun
Francais pour chaque niveau.......2005-10-15
I too found this book at a (used) bookstore and immediately fell in love with the characters, however oblivious they are of the trouble they cause. And the french is definitely navigable by even the lowest-level speakers!
C'est Magnifique!.......2004-08-05
I spent the past year learning French and found this book at a local bookstore. It is HYSTERICAL! It has made learning and maintaining French truly an enjoyable experience. There is so much wonderful humor in this book. I am excited to learn there are more in the series. The situations are funny, nothing is too precious, the kids seem to act like real kids and those poor adults...! I wish I could find an English version to send to my nephew. This is great reading and if you disagree, je vous donnerai une claque!

Super et facile lire. C'est bon les etudiants de francais........2003-07-11
I first came across the Petit Nicolas stories while in French IV. All the people in my class, including me, greatly enjoyed these stories. They are true classics. While easy to read, they give the reader an acute sense of how French is actually used - in context. the tales are engaging and Petit Nicolas acts and thinks so much like all little kids that any cultural differences displayed in the book are easily understood through his eyes. I greatly enjoy these books, especially this one, and highly recommend them to everyone who wishes to read in French. They are not only for children and learners of French, they are for anyone no matter what their age and ability in French. A very good buy!
Excellent starting point for students of French.......2001-09-01
This book is a great way for beginning students of French to improve their skills while also getting an introduction to French children's literature. The language is simple enough for a beginner, and the stories are funny without being juvenile. The illustrations by Sempé can only be described as masterful; they fit perfectly with the atmosphere of the stories. I first saw Sempé's work in "Die Geschicte von Herrn Sommer" by Patrick Süßkind, and I continue to be amazed and amused by his work. I would recommend this book (and presumably the rest of the Petit Nicolas series, which I have not yet read) to anyone who is looking for a way to read "real" French literature while improving their basic French skills.
Customer Reviews:
Tres mignon!.......2006-03-19
Although I had to read this for french class, I enjoyed it very much. It follows the adventures of a little boy named, appropriately, Nicolas. The french is relately easy to understand, seeing as how it is told from a little boy's perspective. You also get to meet Nicolas' many interesting friends: Agnan (Cuthbert in the new english version), Alceste (Alec), Rufus, Maixent, Louisette, Geoffrey and many more. The book is separated into many chapters, each telling a different adventure. I was surprised at how funny it was and enjoyed every minute of it. Also, it is a good way to brush up on your french. Achetez-le parce qu'il est tres interessant!

Customer Reviews:
RIP Jordan.......2007-09-17
RIP Robert Jordan aka James Oliver Rigney, Jr. Too bad you couldn't finish the series.
Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
The Dark Lord guy stirs the pot a bit.
Rand also gets fed up with the sexist sorceresses and says, hey, you blokes can do magic too if you can, and establishes his own band of magic wielders with Mazrim Taim to lead them.
The females get upset at this threat to their power, and come after Rand.
Yet another power base, that of the army of religious fanatics also comes more into play.
I've had all I can stand..........2007-07-21
The rampant mary-suism, the perfect (and morally superior) aiel, the spanking the lectures from Rand and the wise ones, and the sister-wives have at last done me in. I liked this series at first because the characters were small town kids setting off on adventures. Suddenly they are all uber-powerful super-teens who boss around people twice their age. They are all beautiful, wise, and eternally youthful of face. Everyone who is anyone is about 20 years old. The 20 year olds can wield weapons like veterans twice their age. The female characters are almost universally 'the most powerful the tower/wise ones' have ever seen. Rand laments the deaths of female chararacters and yet persists in having a female honor guard and three girlfriends. Totally inconsistant with his upbringing. The sister wife thing... Yeek...Total guy fantasy. No self-respecting woman let alone a queen would agree to 'share' her man with two other women... Women don't share very easily I don't care how close they are. There is jealousy and hurt, and lack of equality.
Towards the end of this one I began to loathe Rand's character. He is supercillious and annoying.
1 star.
Spinning the Wheel of Time.......2007-05-25
I continue to enjoy the Wheel of Time series and they do not seem to get boring like other series. I have listened to them all and everyone has an exciting plot with stunning twists. Now if I could make it through them all that would be a challange.
3.5 stars and downhill from here: be forewarned.......2007-04-25
This is book 6 of the 12-book Wheel of Time series (book 12 will be released in 2008 or 2009, depending upon the author's health and ability to write -- he has a serious blood disease). Each of the previous volumes weighed in at 750-900+ pages paperback as do the ones that follow, and this one is also no afternoon read. Worse yet, it changes the pace and focus of the story.
After learning his identity and embracing his destiny, Rand al'Thor the messiah figure and primary character in the story slows down. Instead of seeking to conquer the rest of the continent after his successful campaigns to date, he tries to hold what he has while the nations he has not conquered are thrown into chaos. He does, however, establish the Black Tower -- the yin to the yang of White Tower.
The other villagers who left Rand's hometown with him are the primary foci of this tale as Nynaeve makes tremendous discoveries and Egwene's life changes momentously, setting up the White Tower/Rebel Aes Sedai thread that pervades books 7-11.
Ultimately, however, both changes (focus, pacing) are negative: the story slows from the breakneck adventure of books 1-5 as Robert Jordan sets the stage for the remaining volumes. But those volumes are even slower, longer and less interesting: book 7 introduces yet more plotlines that bog down the story, in book 8 Jordan adds a new capture-and-rescue issue that takes until book 11 to get sorted out with no significant advancement of the overall plotline despite about 500 pages devoted to it. Worse yet, book 10 consists of 800+ pages of day-in-the-life updates on the characters with nearly no plot movement.
The end of Lord of Chaos is explosive and thrilling, fully worthy of the previous entries. But it engenders a false hope that the next volumes would build upon the momentum. They don't. Instead, the series wallows as Jordan concentrates too much on peripheral plotlines, devotes far too little attention to Rand, and increases the cast of characters beyond belief. Book 11 starts setting up the end-game, but it's a lot to ask for a clean and complete ending to this series in book 12.
