        Book Description

From Elizabeth McGregor comes an unforgettably moving, richly layered novel with a timeless love story at its core. Beautiful, suspenseful, hauntingly erotic, A Road Through the Mountains tells of one woman’s extraordinary journey to a new life with the help of the man she thought she’d lost long ago—a journey that will take hold of your heart.

Anna Russell is a talented painter and single mother. Her daughter, Rachel, is a ten-year-old whose undoubtedly gifted mind is trapped by a form of autism known as Asperger Syndrome. When a car accident leaves Anna in a coma, both their lives—and the lives of all those around them—are changed forever.

Across the Atlantic, David Mortimer receives an unexpected phone call from Anna’s mother. The scientist is stunned to learn that he’s a father. His long-ago affair with Anna was short and intense; when she suddenly returned home to the States, David slipped into a reclusive life of research, haunted by memories of the girl who’d left him without explanation. Now he knows he must break his self-imposed isolation, go to Boston and the woman he’s always loved, meet the child he never knew he had—and perhaps coax them both out of their silence.

But as David attempts to put together the puzzle of Anna’s life as an artist, mother, and daughter, he finds himself involved in a relationship with Anna far more intimate than he expected. Why did she leave him so many years before? Where, as she lies in a coma, is she now? And how is it that he loves this woman even after all these years? When he stumbles across Anna’s mysterious fascination with the rare flowers that were once their shared passion, he and Rachel, their beautiful, sensitive child, may just have discovered how to help Anna find a way back—a road through the mountains.

Lyric, tender, as fragile and enduring as love itself, A Road Through the Mountains draws upon its author’s personal experiences and establishes Elizabeth McGregor as a major storyteller.

2 out of 5 stars Left wanting more..........2005-08-09

Overall, I did enjoy reading this book. I'm not sure though that I would recommend it to a friend. I didn't feel a deep connection with any of the characters for the most part. I was intrigued to see what would end up happening, so I found it to be a page-turner. There was a lot of botany involved in which plants were referred to by their genus-species name. I don't feel that was a necessity to the main plot.

        4 out of 5 stars A Brit in Boston.......2004-07-08

David and Anna meet during her year in England while they're in college. And then she's gone, back home to Ogunquit, leaving him behind without telling him she's pregnant. Ten years later she and their daughter Rachel are in a traffic accident leaving Anna in a coma. Her mother calls David who has been meandering meaninglessly through his life since college, and tells him about Anna and that he's a father. And so the story begins.

Except for the occasional intensive pages with horticulture terms, I enjoyed this book. The story moved smoothly and the end results, although predictable, are what we want. The interesting sidebar of this story is that Rachel, David & Anna's daughter, has Asperger's Syndrome which is on the autistic spectrum. This adds a different flavor to the story and makes the artistic side of things as well as the trip through the mountains that David guides Anna through as she sleeps, a bit more believable and understandable.

This story has no great surprises though. Nothing that excites you or causes you to wish it would continue when you finish it, but it's definitely worth the exploration.

5 out of 5 stars character driven poignant love story.......2004-04-29

Artist Anna Russell raises her ten years old autistic daughter Rachel by herself with only assistance from her own mom. In fact she never told her daughter's father David Mortimer that he sired a child. However, everything changes for Anna when a car accident leaves her in a comatose state. Anna's mother Grace decides it is time for Englishman David Mortimer to learn he is a father. The call shakes the school teacher, who has sublimated his heart and needs into loneliness ever since Anna abruptly left him without a word to return to the States.

David resigns though his students are taking their exams because he knows he must go to Boston to awaken his two women, one the adult he always loved and the other the child he never knew lived. As she remains in a coma, David wonders why she left him and if she awakens will she dispatch him back across the Atlantic? As he and Rachel hit it off in some lovingly father-daughter relationship, he remembers a potential key to waking up Sleeping Beauty, Anna's passion for rare flowers.

A ROAD THROUGH THE MOUNTAINS is a character driven poignant love story starring three delightful protagonists. Anna is an enigma as the audience will ponder along with David why she left him. Hearts will go out to Rachel suffering from autism with little hope to communicate yet David finds way to reach her. David loves his two ladies, but must overcome his fears of intimacy caused by his beloved leaving him. Readers will weep as this poignant tale reaches deep inside the soul of the audience.

5 out of 5 stars Ramming Through to the West Coast!.......2000-04-19

Harvey describes in considerable but not tedious detail the factors that led to the past and present tranportation corridors in southern British Columbia, spanning a period from the mid-nineteenth century, into the second half of the 20th. Every citizen should become familiar with the shenanigans of the big corporate and government interests that retarded transportation development, and the settlement and livelihoods of the ordinary working people in this part of the west. This account is a good start. The author takes us into the stupid and expensive competition between the early railroaders and the steamboat companies, and the struggle to build roads across the land from east to west. He describes the immense difficulties in creating east-west transport links across a rugged land of north-south valleys, and terrible mountain passes. Given the love/hate relationship many westerners have had with the big railroad interests, Harvey debunks the legends of some of the construction personalities, including the americans J.J.Hill and W.C. VanHorne. He is critical of the short-sighted company and government decisions that led to great inconvenience and delays in development of the interior of the northwest that lasted decades. Clearly a fan of the Sternwheelers in the west, he dwells upon their charms and gives us a clear sense of the romance of traveling the interior lakes, and on the Columbia, Fraser, and Kootenay rivers. He gives us an implicit warning here too, of the dangers of applying yesterday's technology to tomorrow's transportation needs. Harvey knows his stuff, at least partially a result of his long time employment in government Public Works. He has included maps, fascinating photos, good chapter notes, a bibliography, and an index in this well-edited book. This volume is written for the general reader in B.C. and western frontier history, and is recommended for those old enough to remember nothing but dusty gravel roads in the west, youth who think highways and railways have always just been there, rail and steamboat fans, and anyone who wonders why the northern Pacific coast is the way it is! This was an excellent historical read, very entertaining, and hard to put down. Together with it's companion volume, "Carving the Western Path - By River, Rail, and Road Through Central and Northern B.C.", Harvey has written a very good 'popular history' account of the coming of modern transportation and its' enormous effects on settlement and industry in the far west.

4 out of 5 stars Happy with purchase, small hicup, conditions were all listed though, fast delivery........2005-07-06

The hicup: I tried to purchase all three books of the trilogy from the same company, they said they had all three, I paid for all three, a few days later I got an e-mail that said they didn't have the third one, recieved full refund but was annoyed.

                  5 out of 5 stars Reader's Review.......2004-10-16

Ok, first of all, I believe I have an answer to a question that I see pop up over and over. In the book 'Darksword Adventures", a role-playing game rulebook for Thimhallan, it explains exactly who Simkin is. I believe that what is said in the rulebook is true, as it is also written by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. Pg. 393 "Simkin is the embodiment of magic. As such, his magical abilities have no limits. Simkin is immortal. Simkin was around when the prophecy was given following the Iron Wars." This may not explain to the fullest who he is, but it does shed some light on the subject. Back to the review. Ok, in this book the prophecy is fulfilled. Everyone knows that. However, some confusion does occur. Why did the technologists come? What was their motivation? Also, the ending. I think that it was the perfect ending for this book. Most of the major characters are taken with the technologists, but Joram and Gwendolyn stay behind. Saryon finds faith in his god, the end. Yes, some questions were left unanswered, but a good book should, IMHO, leave some mystery behind. What happened to them? What happened with Thimhallan? Both good questions, it leaves it open for you to imagine what YOU think happened. I would highly recommend this series, if you read any one of the three books you will fall in love with them.

                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2004-03-28

Yes yes yes, I understand that the book did not end the trilogy in the way ppl wanted not so nicely packaged and in fact a half ending that leaves you longing for more, BUT it has to end somehwere doesn't it? The madness must stop SOMEWHERE! And I think it ended very well in the dramatic way it did.

                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent conclusion.......2004-02-04

Others have critized the way this trilogy ended, with some things left unanswered.. like, who Simkin is, and Joram's friendship with the military, but I found it to be a refreshing change from the usual sappy endings.

I don't care what others say, I highly recommend this series.

                  2 out of 5 stars Dude, Where's my Ending?.......2004-01-05

I'm not going to complain, as others have, that they mixed Fantasy and SF in the same book; that's fine.

But what others call a "refreshing twist" is, IMHO, committing one of the cardinal sins of poor writing. A good author resolves a plot - characters' motivations get worked out, events progress to some natural conclusion, happy, sad, neutral, disturbing, or otherwise. Questions, at least some of them, get answered.

Weak authors build up piles of tension and intrigue then discover they've planned no way out. So instead of resolving plots and characters, they bring in new material that simply makes the previous thousand pages irrelevant.

Nations stand at the brink of war. Our hero is caught and conflicted, feeling responsible for the impending havoc. Each side thinks the other posesses the secret weapon. The motivations, hopes, and dreams of a few dozen supporting characters are balanced on the proverbial knife. The reader is on seats' edge, wondering which noble hearts will receive an unjust end, and whether villains will prosper or bleed out on the end of a white knight's sword.

When all of a sudden, a nameless, faceless force (farce?) with no logical motivation and with whom the reader has no relationship shows up and slaughters everyone. Can't figure out how to resolve that military hero, dear author? One blink of a tank's laser iris, and your conundrum vanishes - along with your reader's sense of resolution.

The series' most entertaining character and biggest enigma, Simkin, simply vanishes, with no explanation whatsoever except for some unsatisfactory handwaving in a weak and aimless epilogue.

Fun story, interesting characters throughout the trilogy. The ending, ashes and emptiness, sans denouement. The hovertanks were like the film melting in the projector just as Dirty Harry becomes trapped in a Mexican standoff, ten minutes before the credits roll.

"They all got run over by a truck. The end." I wish I knew what REALLY happened!
