5 out of 5 stars An incredibly moving story ! Thank you !.......1999-11-05

I'm a big Jon land fan and have read all of his work, including last year's holiday novel HOPE MOUNTAIN. In the same tradition of HOPE MOUNTAIN, this novel is a great story and an excellent gift to give for anyone.

5 out of 5 stars A special, moving and beautiful work.......1999-10-10

After a stint in Viet Nam, Mike Fontana returned home a changed person. He became an alcoholic, a spouse abuser, and ultimately a family deserter. He remarried, but that failed too as finally his wife left him and their son Joe. Mike straightened himself out to raise an ailing Joe, who recovered. Mike's mission in life is to open the Hope Key Dolphin Assisted Therapy Center in Florida because he believes that dolphins have a special knack to connect with special children that seem unreachable.

Katy Grant has lived a difficult life. When she issues bad checks, the court sentences her to two years in the county jail. Mike offers her an opportunity to perform six months community service at his facility in lieu of prison time. Katy accepts, planning to do nothing. However, Mike shocks her by admitting he is her father and wants to make amends. She reacts by deciding to turn his life into hell. She refuses to acknowledge the healing power of dolphins or that she likes her stepbrother. Only time will tell whether Katy is affected like so many before her.

Jon Land is a great storyteller because of his ability to escort his audience into the inner heart and soul of his characters and leave everyone with a message of hope. DOLPHIN KEY shows how successful dolphins are working with physically and mentally impaired children. However, the tale also focuses on second, third, and nth chances and how one must never give up no matter how hopeless it may seem. Fans desiring a life should read this story of renewal.

    Book Description

Cetacea, a novel from writer Theresa Foley, has been released by Sea Story Press. The novel is the story of a mysterious series of deaths that occur in the beautiful waters off of Key West, and the trio of locals - an adventurous woman who captains a dive boat, her tarot-card reading psychic roommate and an ex-Navy SEAL turned Duval St. bartender - who set out to solve the mystery behind the killings. Blame falls on a majestic dolphin, and while the town is up in arms trying to either get the dolphin or hush things up, Captain Mattie Gold takes it upon herself to find out what is really go on out there beyond the reef.

Cetacea has been praised as "a fabulous debut by an exciting new author," by author Peter Shann Ford. "A ripping first novel, with a legendary, lethal, lonely hero whose stunning secret spans time, oceans and the essence of life. Theresa Foley writes with passion and vivid authenticity about deep sea diving, danger, dolphins and love."

Rosalind Brackenbury, the well known Key West writer whose work includes Seas Outside the Reef and Circus at the End of the World, comments: "Theresa Foley has written a whodunit, a fast-paced story with a passionate plea at its core for the integrity of the natural world. The fate of the misused dolphin underlies the intrigues of the human characters, and one of the strongest voices in the book belongs to the mammal which thinks and feels as we do, but without the selfishness and greed."

Cetacea is written in the tradition of new South Florida fiction, with Ms. Foley now claiming a place in the genre of highly popular writers that includes Carl Hiaasen, Laurence Shames, Les Standiford, and Elmore Leonard. Cetacea manages to blend local color and environmental issues with humor and good writing. This book will appeal to a wide audience, ranging from the reader who is looking for a good escape book as part of the vacation entertainment on the beach, to those who are concerned about humankind's impact on the sea and its wildlife, to anyone who embraces the idea that humans are mystically connected to all other life on the planet.

3 out of 5 stars New Age thriller with a few... issues.......2007-02-07

I'm a little sorry I read it, but I wouldn't have read it if there hadn't been all these glowing reviews. Time for a different slant.

I found this an "okay" read but not great. Story flow was choppy at times and the ending seemed forced, like there was a page limit that couldn't be exceeded. The character development was sparse, similar to the style in short stories. The premise wasn't set early so the story built up in an unexpected fashion - not a surprise plot twist, but a shift in story direction that jarred a bit.

5 out of 5 stars One to Share with Friends.......2001-06-03

I'm usually a "nibbler" at books, reading a little now and a little later, whenever I have time, but with Cetacea I kept reading practically without pause. This was an interesting, informative book with exotic locales, well-developed characters, dramatic tension, and realistic dialogue. For the duration of the story, I felt as if I were in it -- seeing, feeling, hearing it all. Besides the gripping story line, Theresa Foley has called up an intriguing image of Key West that makes me want to visit her island at the southeast tip of the United States and perhaps do some dolphin-watching, myself. This is one of those enjoyable books that I'm sharing with my friends!

    5 out of 5 stars Cetacea.......2001-05-25

Cetacea was a real page-turner for me: I found myself holding my breath while cheering and fearing for the dolphins. The variety and depth of Ms. Foley's characters, the richness of her story line, and her knowledge of diving, dolphins, and dialog make this book a fine showcase of her exceptional writing skills. Cetacea truthfully captures the flavors and eccentricities of living and working in the Southernmost City-90 miles from Cuba, while skillfully and passionately blending equal amounts of suspense, ecological awareness, and mysticism. An impressive and hopeful message is conveyed to the reader in a very palatable form. I sincerely hope that Ms. Foley is working on a sequel.

    5 out of 5 stars Captivating.......2001-05-11

You don't have to know Key West to enjoy this novel by an exciting new novelist because the drama beginning on page one quickly encaptures you. One of these "I couldn't put it down" books. Ms. Foley takes an allegation of training dolphins (cetacean) to kill and writes an intriguing mystery involving national and international politics mixed with adventures of the sea, including sailing and diving, plus a love story to capture your heart. Ms. Foley's skill in developing the characters is exceptional and the dialogue allows you to easily enjoy the story as it unfolds throughout the book to a climatic unexpected ending. Clearly the potential for a movie or TV special.

                  Book Description

The biggest fantasy from L. E. Modesitt, Jr. to date, Colors of Chaos is the story of the White Chaos wizard Cerryl: his education in life and love, and his rise to power in the magicians guild of Fairhaven. This is the direct sequel to The White Order, which told of Cerryl's boyhood and youth, and takes place at the same time as the events in Modesitt's earlier novel, The Magic Engineer. Yet it stands alone, the longest Recluce novel, a portrayal of the growth and change of character and of the strengths and weaknesses of an age-old civilization held together by the power of magic. Ceryl, now a full mage in The White Order, must prove himself indispensible to Jeslek, the High Wizard. Whether through assassination, effective gorvernance of occupied territory or the fearless and clever direction of troops in battle, Ceryl faces many harrowing obstacles, not the least of which is Anya, the plotting seductress who's the real power behind the scenes of the white wizards. With his wits, his integrity, and the support of his love, the Black healer Leyladin, he must survive long enough to claim his rightful spot within the ruling heirarchy of the White Order. This is a must-read for followers of the Saga of Recluce, offering a unique, sympathetic point of view of the White Chaos wizards-the forces that throughout history have opposed the magicians of Recluce.Colors of Chaos is the ninth book in the saga of Recluce.

3 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Cerryl, from The White Order, is all grown up here and in a position of power. In this book, we see a lot of the same important events of The Magic Engineer, but from the Chaos Side.

It seems that diplomacy is something that will be important in his future. Politics and taxes, all that sort of thing.

What is interesting is that despite the Black and White names, it is all just grey, depending on whose viewpoint is shown at the time.

                  4 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-01-07

I've always been a fan of this series, but this may well be my favorite to date. The tie-in from the "other side of the fence" is very enlightening, and nicely written.

I found myself thinking, "Why don't Cerryl and Dorrin just get together and talk? They want the same thing...", as if these were two real people.

Any book that can make me forget I'm reading a book, is an excellent book indeed.

                  5 out of 5 stars A Great Read.......2005-11-28

I just finished a re-read of this book (along with its immediate predecessor The White Order), and I now remember why these two are probably my favorites out of the entire Recluce series. Modesitt is in top form here -- the characters are real people making hard decisions as well as they can (not always perfectly), and you truly feel for them, even as you see their weaknesses. The main character (Cerryl the mage) is especially memorable.

Another nice aspect of this book is the parallel with The Magic Engineer. Though I did not enjoy that book as much as this one, seeing the "other side of the story" was quite interesting, as it sheds light on the fact that the characters in both are simply doing the best they can in their respective situations. There are some "better" and "worse" characters, but they show up in all the various countries, trades, and magical abilities, and no character is simply good or evil.

If you are interested in this book, be sure to read The White Order first, as Colors finishes the story that it begins. No other knowledge of Modesitt's Recluce series is necessary, though a read through The Magic Engineer in advance is illuminating. These books will stretch your imagination, make you think, and (best of all) make you glad that you read them.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the best of the series so far........2004-06-18

This book along with the previous book, The White Order, make up a really great story about the white mage Cerryl. While every other book in the series is written from the perspective of the Blacks and portrays all chaos wizards to be totally evil (which most of them seem to be), these books provide a look into the workings of the Whites. It turns out that not all whites are truly evil and in fact many have very honorable ambitions to help the world rather than take it over. The Colors of Chaos was especially interesting because it told the same story as The Magic Engineer (with Dorrin the smith) exept from the perspective of Cerryl. It shows how there are two sides to every coin and that peole from both sides (except a few such as Jeslek & Anya) actually believe that they are on the side of good. In this story, told from the perspective of the Whites, Dorrin the smith and Recluce seem to be the bad guys because of their support of rulers who refuse to pay the road tariffs (to the detriment of all of Candar).

Also, Modesitt's writing style has come a long way from his earlier novels and this book was much more interesting and gripping than its predecessors... I strongly reccomend this book for any Modesitt fans or fans of fantasy in general (although I believe that you'll have a much better appreciation of this one if you read the others in the series first). This book does much to patch up the complex story of the Recluce Saga.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Read from Modesitt.......2003-11-27

This book is absolutely thrilling. It has great political and economical intrigue. It is made great by the qualities and the diversity of the main character, Cerryl. He is a young white mage in the city of Fairhaven. He was a Patrol Mage, an assassin, and a temporary governor of a recently captured city.

The strengths and weaknesses of Cerryl made the book good but how money and economics influenced the course of action made this very realistic. The political backstabbing made the book very interesting.
Also another book written by the same author blended into this story but was told by the good side. This book was written from the evil side.
Coming to a conclusion this book is a great read. It is not very easy to follow but is still great.

                              Book Description

With fascinating insights into Maya Angelou's life and creativity, and a shrewd examination of her techniques and recurring themes, Dolly McPherson provides us with a fresh and unusual picture of the celebrated author and her methods. She remarks, too, on Angelou's exceptional ear, her recording of the precise, vivid word and phrase, and on the warmth and humor in her autobiographical writing. The book closes with an interview between these two great friends ‹ a marvelous epilogue to this portrait of an immensely gifted, greatly admired woman.

                                Description:
Studies on applying the photochemical UV/TiO"2 oxidation process to treat the lignin-containing wastewater for dissolved organic carbon (DOC), color and reducing A"2"5"4 (the absorption at the wavelength of 254 nm) have been carried out. The data obtained in this study demonstrate that the UV/TiO"2 process is effective in oxidizing the lignin thus reducing the color and DOC of the wastewater treated. The combined UV/TiO"2 treatment can achieve better removal of DOC and color than the UV treatment alone. Color removal, based on American Dye Manufacture Index (ADMI) measurement, is greater than 99% if the pH is maintained at 3.0 with the addition of 1 gl^-^1 TiO"2. When 10 gl^-^1 TiO"2 is applied, the oxidation reduction potential (ORP) value is reached to result in an 88% removal of both DOC and color. A model was developed based on the variation of ORP during the photochemical reaction to simulate the decoloring process. The proposed model can be used to predict the color removal efficiency of the UV/TiO"2 process.

5 out of 5 stars Focused Color Energy Healing.......2002-03-10

Master Choa's book, ADVANCED PRANIC HEALING, is a first-rate reference source for any healer doing highly specific color energy healing work. This book is ideal for advanced healers who are comfortable and experienced with doing healings and discerning a wide variety of energy conditions in people. While basic healing techniques are clearly described in the beginning, the majority of this book presumes a fair amount of experience and proficiency with color healings on the part of the reader. Those just starting out with color healing may still find this book useful, as it clearly describes what healers see and feel as they are doing pranic healings.

I am impressed with the breadth and depth of conditions described in this book along with their associated treatments. Everything from migraine headaches, inner ear infections, torn tendons, dislocations, to internal wounds, cataracts, kidney stones and deafness are discussed in detail. Recommendations on color density (lightness or darkness) as well as energization are given with explanations which I found illuminating and intriguing. Master Choa's experience with prana is evident throughout this beautifully written and illustrated book, leaving readers feeling inspired and well-informed. This book's index is clearly organized, so the healer can look up recommended treatments until such time as the underlying logic of it all sinks in (such as avoiding use of orange healing energies around peoples' heads, and paying attention to which way one's fingers are pointing).

Even though I mostly utilize universal healing energies, such as Reiki, I still find ADVANCED PRANIC HEALING immensely useful for its insights into what kinds of frequencies are best suited for various ailments. I recommend this book for anyone doing color healings, as well as those wishing to catch an intimate and revealing glimpse of the healer's world.

5 out of 5 stars A Guide for all Humanity.......2002-01-12

In the six years that I have been a professional pranic healer and certified psychotherapist, I have found myself almost always coming back to this book no matter how much I have learnt along the way. Theres always something there that can better a healing session, and the author's absolutely stunning command of the healing world is certainly awe-inspiring.

When I first attended the healing sessions conducted by Choa Kok Sui in Southern India, I had no idea it was to be one of the core foundations for the rest of my life. Admittedly, the basic healing practices can be learnt by anyone willing to open up to the novelty of the system, but I have found that the advanced healing systems, all mentioned in this book, are mastered only though repeated practice. The key word to being a successful healer is practice, practice and more practice. I often find myself self-healing through the day if theres no one to practice on, and believe me, it is the best way to develop the powers of visualization and intent, which are crucial to being a good pranic healer.

I am glad that America is slowly awaking to the wonder of pranic healing. While reiki healing has been here for a while, from my own learning I have found it to be a somewhat poor cousin to pranic healing simply because the cleaning process in pranic healing is much more elaborate and thorough. At the moment, my current patient suffers from a spinal problem that he has had since birth, and I was rather apprehensive about the number of healings I would have to perform before results showed themselves. In general, I find that the Western patients I have treated are more desirous of fast results than my Eastern counterparts, and in this case it was a stroke of good fortune all around when the patient seemed especially sensitive and open to the healing session. The wonder of pranic healing is when the patient sometimes expresses a physical reaction to the invisible process within minutes, making me believe that this system is not 'spiritual' as many insist, but rather a very down to earth and practical form of healing that human beings all around the world should show more interest in.

The great thing about this book is how it has been divided into parts exactly like an Occidental medical manual. This makes it so easy for a healer to pinpoint the ailment he wishes to treat, and for him to master the treatment beforehand. I have healed persons with kidney stones, my mother's chronic headache problems, my dad's bad back, and a whole bunch of friends and acquaintances. Very vital to pranic healing, and the books will also confirm this, is the necessity of meditation. I cannot stress enough how much this affects one's healing capabilities. Being a student of raja yoga, I find that any sort of meditation based on the Eastern systems (be it raja, kriya, or hatha, though I would highly recommend an inert form of meditation over active processes such as hatha yoga) helps immensely. Choa Kok Sui, who wrote this book, says that the meditation on twin hearts is the most beneficial, and it is well worth sticking to his advice.

For anyone who is remotely interested in pranic healing, I highly recommend this manual. If you are already a basic pranic healer, you HAVE to get this one! The next step after this level of pranic healing, is the healing with crystals, and I hope that ... soon carries that one as well. All these books are indispensable. Spread the word.
