Die-hard romantics will find it hard to resist John Burnham Schwartz's novel Claire Marvel. Reminiscent of Erich Segal's Love Story, this is the tale of a great yet tragic love, one foretold in the novel's first sentence: "There was before her and now there is after her, and that is the difference in my life." Boy (Julian Rose) meets beautiful girl (Claire Marvel) in a spring shower in 1985 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where they attend Harvard as graduate students. They fall in love and spend a difficult yet idyllic time in the French countryside, but she is stolen away by Julian's treacherously suave advisor. Julian flees Boston for his hometown of New York City, where he starts a new life. He and Claire encounter each other again years later, and eventually Claire comes back to Julian, but only indirectly, again in France. --Susan Biskeborn

Book Description

With the publication of his second novel, Reservation Road, John Burnham Schwartz established himself as a superb storyteller as well as a writer of extraordinary grace and stunning perception. The novel was hailed by Rosellen Brown as a "shattering book, imagined with startling emotional precision and generosity." And the New York Times Book Review called it "a triumph of form, pacing and power." Now, with Claire Marvel, Schwartz brings readers into a world so real and beautifully drawn that one does not want the story to end.

A chance meeting in a rainstorm becomes a defining moment of transforming emotion for graduate students Claire Marvel and Julian Rose, two people whose hearts have long been protected behind walls of wit, intelligence, and innate caution. Neither could imagine what lies in store for them: the unexpected unfolding over a dozen years of a great and difficult love.

Moving between Cambridge, Massachusetts, New York City, and the hushed, timeless countryside of France, John Burnham Schwartz explores the many aspects of emotional commitment and the fear of giving oneself to another -- in father-son relationships, in marriage, and in the ecstasy and elation of an elusive but compelling passion. Here is a novel that plumbs with wisdom and compassion the hidden regrets, enduring hopes, and guiding mysteries of a bond stronger than reason. Masterfully written, Claire Marvel is a love story for our time, and a brilliant achievement.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2004-06-10

I thought this book was worth it for the feelings about young love and lost love. I enjoyed how the love experiences of the different family members brought varying perspectives to the main story line. BUT...the first part, the development of their relationship rang false and the writing was affected. The metaphors felt like lists from work, and the rhythm was very annoying. Also the main character was quite the wimp, and although he was young, the whole tormented young love thang felt like a Herman Hesse novel (I'm over that phase, thank you). The remaining two thirds of the book was good, but I don't recommend it unless you're into being melancholy and love-torn for the duration...

4 out of 5 stars A Beautifully Written Novel - Much More Than A Love Story!.......2004-03-11

"Claire Marvel" is a simple love story told with extraordinary grace. Author John Burnham Schwartz writes with spare elegant prose about disparate characters who come together for a time, to love and to betray. But "Claire Marvel" is also a character study and a commentary on how insecurity, poor timing and lack of decisiveness can destroy the closest relationships. It delves into the consequences of action and lack of action, the ability to be courageous in life, to act on conscience, and the growth of character.

Claire Marvel and Julian Rose meet serendipitously during a rain storm. He seeks cover at the Fogg Art Museum where Claire is waiting for the rain to abate under an umbrella the color of buttercups. The two are graduate students at Harvard, he in political science, she in art, studying the Pre-Raphaelites. Claire is a free spirit, very visual, absorbed by images, color and line with an artist's sensibility - much more than that of an art historian. She is a "traveler who through circuitous wandering had stumbled upon an unchartered place beyond explanation." Julian is a believer of empirical truth. "It is hard for him to bump up against anything without immediately supplying or reaching for definition." They both carry the baggage of their dysfunctional families. And yet they are kindred spirits and come together effortlessly.

Claire's father is dying and asks her to spend some time in France at a small house in the countryside where he had spent some of the happiest moments of his life. She asks Julian to accompany her. Their time together is idyllic. However, flaws in Julian's character cause problems and missed opportunities. The novel explores his past and the reasons for his development as a passive, almost cowardly, man. So the novel becomes much more than a love story.

I found the parts of the novel dealing with Julian's relationship with his doctorial advisor to be fascinating. Julian is writing a dissertation on the various incarnations of the Progressive Party. His advisor, Carl Davis, is a powerful professor with close ties to Ronald Regan and the Republican Party. Julian disagrees with Davis' politics but is drawn to his authority and powerful presence. This relationship play a major part in the storyline.

Some critics have compared "Claire Marvel" to Erich Segal's novel "Love Story." The only commonalties I found are that Julian and Claire attend Harvard and live in Cambridge for a period. There is little "schmaltz" or sentimentality here. The prose and the author's use of language is often quite beautiful. The tension is taut, as the story unfolds through memory and direct confrontation with the past. I was very moved by the author's compassionate exploration of relationships, passion, regret and loss. Bravo John Burnham Schwartz!

Astonishingly beautiful. Astonishingly wise. A timeless love story written by one of the most talented young novelists today. You must read this book.

1 out of 5 stars I Marvel that I Managed to Finish This Book.......2003-05-13

Most of this book was pointless fluff. Why do we need to know every detail about the main character's teaching and his marriage and blah blah blah? The few chapters with Claire in the beginning were not enough to convince me of a great love -- and the reason for their (prolonged) seperation didn't convince me either, so nothing in-between held me. At many points I wondered what I was reading for. He seemed obsessed, she seemed morose -- I didn't care one way or the other by the end. And I'm a romantic!!!

5 out of 5 stars Much more than a love story.......2003-04-07

This novel is one you will read and read again, discovering new layers of richness brewing under its subtle, elegant prose.

Ender Wiggin, the hero and scapegoat of mass alien destruction in Ender's Game, receives a chance at redemption in this novel. Ender, who proclaimed as a mistake his success in wiping out an alien race, wins the opportunity to cope better with a second race, discovered by Portuguese colonists on the planet Lusitania. Orson Scott Card infuses this long, ambitious tale with intellect by casting his characters in social, religious and cultural contexts. Like its predecessor, this book won both the Hugo and Nebula Awards.

4 out of 5 stars SPEAKER FOR THE DEAD.......2007-10-07

NOT THE EXPECTED ACTION PACK SEQUEL TO ENDER'S GAME, BUT THE MORE CEREBRAL AFTERMATH OF THE FORMIC WAR. READER WILL SEE A DIFFERENT SIDE OF ENDER. SPEAKER FOR THE DEAD IS STILL WORTH READING.

4 out of 5 stars A Curious Award Winner that is Politically Incorrect.......2007-10-02

Why Politically Incorrect? Mr. Card's work ends with the piggies firmly choosing to accept the benefits of a technologically superior culture. Freedom of choice is good, according to western standards. However, every choice has a dark side, and, in our modern world, when cultures meet, often the "less advanced" culture has been severely tainted, or even destroyed, regardless of the benign intentions of the "more advanced" culture. As a result, there never is truly a freedom of choice for such people, and modern societies are held responsible for the destruction of indigienous cultures, regardless of their good intentions.
To say that the piggies "freely" chose to pursue the technology and culture that Andrew Wiggins offered is an impossibility. They had no free choice since they could not fully understand the consequences of their actions.
As a result, if anyone other than Mr Card had written this book (with his extensive writing and humanitarian credentails), I cannot help but wonder how this book would have been received.

4 out of 5 stars Funny how much people hate books that actually make them think.......2007-09-08

This isn't really sci-fi for Star Wars fans, especially the way Ender's Game was. It doesn't surprise me that Orson Scott Card's (OSC) LDS mission was in Brazil, since the characters speak Portuguese and this book contains historical references to Brazilian history. What I found the most far fetched, and didn't like about this book was the Christian banter. Will the human race still have arguments over who's right about god that far into the future? I think I'll vomit now.

In this story, Ender has an absurd amount of money that will magically buy him anything he wants. There is another interesting character in the book, who solves Ender's problems too easily. Where's the challenge? A little too American-Disney style magically making life a little too easy. In plain English, you don't get the idea that Ender has any new life lessons to learn. Fortunately, there are several other characters in this book who do.

On a philosophical level, I really enjoyed this novel. I even emailed a philosophy prof from back in the day to ask him if he'd read any OSC, which he had, although he didn't recognize the title of this book. If you have an open mind and enjoy books that make you think, I think it's worth checking out. I'm looking forward to OSC's prequel to this, that's supposedly being written. It will also be interesting to see how Ender's Game turns out as a film in 08, but I can't imagine this story as a film...unless Martin Scorcese directs it.

5 out of 5 stars Not to be associated with the others........2007-08-15

Some fans have been disenchanted with the rest of the Ender series past the first book, but I would caution them not to lump this book in with the later ones simply because it shares a setting and a set of concerns. This one shines.

This is the book Card actually had wanted to write for a long time-- the later ones were written because of his publisher's contract, and Ender's Game helped him finally establish a base from which to write Speaker for the Dead. I can understand why he'd always wanted to write this book: what is in it is beautiful and true. I couldn't and wouldn't say that for any of his books that followed, but this one deserves consideration independent of what you think of the rest of the series.

5 out of 5 stars A philosophical tale, and best sequel ever in Sci.Fi!.......2007-06-30

Continuing from the great work in Enders game, Card completely changes path with his writings in Speaker for the Dead. The story is philosophical, the conversations are almost like essays, and Card really makes you wonder as the reader about fundamental issues in human nature, and in how society has evolved. Card uses cunning wit to deliver his punchline, and you are really left wondering if not all conflicts, all wars, genicides and racial conflicts through the ages are due to a fundamental inherent (dis)ability in man to trust anyone that is slightly different from himself. Secondly, Card creates the concept of a speaker for the dead, which is almost religious in its proportions and is a brilliant concept. Ender is becoming the savior of mankind but without the ability to save himself. Brilliant work, and best sequel ever in Sci.Fi

Book Description

Beyond Enders Boxed Mass Market Set
Contains: Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide and Children of the Mind

Speaker for the Dead:
In the aftermath of his terrible war, Ender Wiggin disappeared, and a powerful voice arose: The Speaker for the Dead, who told the true story of the Bugger War.

Now, long years later, a second alien race has been discovered, but again the aliens' ways are strange and frightening...again, humans die. And it is only the Speaker for the Dead, who is also Ender Wiggin the Xenocide, who has the courage to confront the mystery...and the truth.

Xenocide:
The war for survival of the planet Lusitania will be fought in the hearts of a child named Gloriously Bright.

On Lusitania, Ender found a world where humans and pequininos and the Hive Queen could all live together; where three very different intelligent species could find common ground at last. Or so he thought.

Lusitania also harbors the descolada, a virus that kills all humans it infects, but which the pequininos require in order to become adults. The Startways Congress so fears the effects of the descolada, should it escape from Lusitania, that they have ordered eh destruction of the entire planet, and all who live there. The Fleet is on its way, a second xenocide seems inevitble.

Children of the Mind:
The planet Lusitania is home to three sentient species: the Pequeninos; a large colony of humans; and the Hive Queen, brought there by Ender. But once against the human race has grown fearful; the Starways Congress has gathered a fleet to destroy Lusitania.

Jane, the evolved computer intelligence, can save the three sentient races of Lusitania. She has learned how to move ships outside the universe, and then instantly back to a different world, abolishing the light-speed limit. But it takes all the processing power available to her, and the Starways Congress is shutting down the Net, world by world.

Soon Jane will not be able to move the ships. Ender's children must save her if they are to save themselves.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth the purchase.......2007-05-15

By the end of Ender's Game, the Ender story feels complete. Author Card may have agreed, as the following stories take Ender and his tale in an entirely new direction. If you just stick to Ender's Game, you won't feel at a loss. These stories feel extraneous and the characters are too certain of their own righteousness to be believable.

4 out of 5 stars More in Sci-fi, but less in strategy (sometimes brilliant but sometimes...).......2007-02-28

I have read the whole ender series, but with a strange sequence which may have affected the way I view the different books in the series. The first book I have read was the Shadow of the Hegemon, thanks to a tourist that had left it in the library of a hotel in Skiathos island. This book got me hooked, but it confused me also as I didn't know if I should start reading the next books or the previous ones.

The general pattern in the whole series is:
The beginning book is Ender's Game. Then we have two subcategories, one the Shadow series (which, with the exception of the first book, take place on earth and are more within military strategy) and one the Ender series (which take place in space and are more into new sci-fi ideas). Shadow series probably can be read from everyone, while I guess that the Ender series (especially from Speaker for the Dead onwards) would be read mainly from sci-fi fans.
Below are my comments for the books of the series, in the order I have read them and a marking (10 is the highest mark):

Shadow of the Hegemon: The first book I have read, and which I could not leave from my hands. I finished it in 2 days. It was fast paced action, very smart plot and after reading it I believed that Orson Scot Card (OSC) has invented/re-invented a new genre of literature. That of military strategy and adventure combined with brilliance/mind games and hidden portions of romance. Such books always existed but this seemed to be THE book. It was like the way Dan Brown re-invented books with trivials and puzzles, together with fast paced adventure. I strongly recommend it to everybody that likes such type of books. (mark: 10)

Shadow puppets: The sequel to the above. I found it interesting but somehow boring as the above story developed little and the focus was on the characters (maybe too much focus so that it seemed to me that it was slightly mumbling jumbling. Strategy, brilliance and adventure seemed to be very low here. I would not recommend it for anybody to read it in isolate, unfortunately you have to read it if you want to go to the next book. I really believe that OSC made a mistake here (deliberately or not) as this book should have been told in 50-60 pages and be included in the previous or the next book. (mark: 6 but you will read it because you will want to read Shadow of the Giant)

Shadow of the Giant: (see below)

Ender's game: A really great book to read, probably the best of the series, however, as I had read its sequels first, when I reached the 80% of this book, I had predicted the end. However, it's at the highest standards of sci-fi, military strategy, adventure, brilliant mind games and very good depth in the human aspect of the characters. In comparison to the shadow series, it is more "space" sci-fi, while shadow series have much lesser sci-fi elements and are more down to earth. (mark: 10)

Speaker for the dead: Another great book, but different style. Less adventure, more human aspect, more maturity. Brilliance yes, but not military, sci-fi yes (some great ideas) but not spaceship style. (Mark: 9)

Xenocide: A good sequel of the previous novel. In certain points more brilliant, in other sections more boring, however is again a very good sci-fi book. The only flaw in these series (Speker for the dead, Xenocide, Children of the mind) is the idea behind one of the alien species described which I found outrageously extreme, however if you ignore it becomes first class reading. (Mark: 9)

Children of the mind: I think that OSC has wrapped up his case pretty badly in that one. It's a fair book except the fact that I felt that OSC mumbles jumbles for one third of the novel not having decided how to end it. In other critiques I have found it described as nice approach to moral dilemmas, however, moral dilemma is when you describe it once and make your choice, while here the dilemma is repeated and repeated... I felt like I was watching a movie worth 10 oscars and the end did not worth to be included even in a cheap video movie. And again, many open ends at the end (for possible sequels). (Mark: 7 but you will read it as you will be hooked from the previous ones).

Ender's shadow: Having read Enders Game and Shadow of the Hegemon, I found this book probably the best of the series, which of course is my subjective preference. I could characterize it as probably the best book I have read ever! Not to repeat myself, it has all that Shadow of the Hegemon and Ender's Game have, and even more...(Mark: the absolute 10).

Shadow of the Giant: When I read shadow puppets, I said, "that's it, OSC has lost either his talent or his appetite for good writing...", so I was pretty unwilling to read it. Fortunately I decided to, as it proved to be a good one, were I believe that OSC has nicely wrapped up his story, with two small flaws.
* The one is described below (its end needed to be slightly more complete) and,
* The other is the fact that although he describes certain smart battles, he does not focus enough on them as it seems that he is in a hurry to wrap all things up. It had all elements to become a masterpiece but it ended up being a good to read book (Mark: 9)

In general, both series have three categories of good stuff:
1) Some great sci-fi ideas (battle room, battle games, fantasy game, ansible, aia, Jane, in/out travel, raman varelse etc)
2) Great military strategy, mind games etc combined with adventure
3) In certain books, depth of characters, moral dilemmas etc
And two main bad stuff:
1) Mumbling jumbling in certain books which was completely unnecessary (either OSC wanted just to produce and sell another title - see shadow puppets- or he could not decide how the story will continue-see last book of Ender series).
2) One of the alien species described in the Ender series was so too outrageous even for sci-fi that made it look ridiculous. The idea behind it was brilliant in sci-fi terms, but he could try a different living organism...
Finally, OSC has left open ends in both series (probably for next sequels), however I believe that there are two things missing. a) the story of the Hive Queen and the Hegemon, told in a metaphorical manner so it means much for humanity. b) In ancient theatre, a story should end in a way that brings "katharsis" to the story, and the souls of the readers. I believe that the end of the shadow of the giant may be smart for commercial purposes but it was very unfair to the reader as it did not bring full "katharsis".

In several ways, Speaker for the Dead is a stronger story because it's about people. But you'd never care about Speaker For the Dead as much unless you saw yourself in Ender's Game.

5 out of 5 stars Few books can enter your mind like Ender's Game can........2000-07-28

There is only one series of books in this world that I can truthfully say I have read over one-hundred times. There is only one series of books that give me something new every time I read them. Ender's Game and the books that follow and coincide with it are truly specialin their ability to tell a story that reflects human emotion so vividly that you find yourself invested deeply. I've looked through Ender's eyes as he prevailed through all that was thrown at him. I've cried when he was bent and twisted to the will of his trainers. I've felt for his sister when she realized that Ender had truly lost something of what he used to be. Then finally, I became both angry and relieved when in the end, there was victory yet a victory that Ender couldn't walk away from... it would forever be a haunting vision deep in his mind. I pitied him, as if he were a dear friend. For to me, he was. Mr. Card. You've made me love a child, and a man, I've never met and know to never have existed, but whom I would lay my life down for. Thank you.

3 out of 5 stars There's Tapes and the Real Thing.......2000-07-19

I had recently decided to reread the Ender Series, but I wanted to listen to it, since it takes me so long to read now that I am so busy. But I have lots of time in the car....So I purchased these audio tapes. What upset me was that these works are abridged. They are the not the whole story. I searched for better ones that had the whole book, but I couldn't find any anywhere. So if you don't mind hearing the abridged version, these are good. But I didn't like it very much, even though it made me remember the parts I had read more vividly. The Ender series is wonderful and well done, but the tapes aren't all that they appear to be.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great sourcebook! Tremendously useful........2000-02-05

This book is well-written and covers a vast scope. Contrary to what the title might lead you to believe, this book covers a lot more than just plain mediums. In fact, it offeres detailed information on just about any faction in the Skinlands that might interact with the Restless Dead: "Boardwalk mediums" found at carnivals and circuses the ruthless Giovanni vampires, even charlatans and frauds who possess no real talent, but manage to offend wraiths with their very presumption and chicanery.

This book is definitely worth the purchase price- it will enrich virtually any Wraith chronicle.

5 out of 5 stars Mediums done right.......1999-11-12

This is a fine resource for mediums, much better than the Quick and the Dead. The systems stuff is vastly improved, with a battery of new merits and flaws for mediums that I actually found useful (and can be used to supplement or replace the hedge magic paths for interacting with wraiths). There is some good stuff on summoning, a large section on Native American medicine men and shamanic dealings with the dead, a fresh look at many of the old ghost-dealing groups, and a new ability for those people who have had enough with wraiths shouting in their ears.
